It would be nice if Matrix could get the rights to obtain the classic "Carrier Strike" and embellish(improve) on it as was done with "Steel Panthers"..There are more than a few of us who have always liked that great game and sometimes "stretching your arm across the water" is refreshing after being pushed around in the mud for awhile....The improvements would be correcting the ranges for the various aircraft and the combat factors of all units..THE PRODUCT IS NOT DEAD,and neither are it's fans...This is an opportunity..I for one will never find interest in sci fi nor "fantasy"..(Except for Tolkien,of course)..How 'bout it folks??

Do me a favor please and don't bash games set in the future until you have tried one or two. There is a reason that Matrix has picked up Titans of Steel,Warring Suns. That reason is very simple. It may be the best purely tactical game you will ever play.
Warring Suns consists of 4 teams of up to 8 Mechs per team with 5 weight classes of AFVs ranging from 40 to 200 tons, so that you can play a duel between recons in about 30-40 minutes or a 16 on 16 team game with assault titans in 6-10 hours of netplay and any game in that span can have you sweating blood.
Warring Suns has two features either of which most other games would kill for. The first is that the game engine works as if you were in real time. Say you fire a weapon at an opponent and then want to wait until that weapon system recycles before firing again (you have info screens that can tell you how long that this will be) if it's 17 seconds to reload/recharge that system then 17 game seconds later you will get a command prompt for that titan asking what you want to do now. In the meantime this process is ongoing for every titan in the game. No more having the same tank with no main gun shots left to fire asking if you want to fire each time something in that tank's LOS moves (spwaw)(I love spwaw, but that makes me crazy). You only have to deal with any part of your team when it hits a juncture point.
Second, for those of us who like ambushes and maneuver, the map will change to reflect only what is visible to that particular titan. I have seen a number of posts in these forums bemoaning the fact that no matter where a unit is placed the entire map is visible at all times. Not in Warring Suns it ain't. You have that lovely choice: skulk behind the hill and see nothing in safety or stand on top of the hill and see most of the map (at least until you get blown off of the hill).
I'm a wargamer who's been gaming for 37 years (sigh). I've played every time period under the sun and at this point all that I care about is that a game is balanced and fun to play. That Matrix has breathed life back into some of my old favorites will make me love this company forever but for Matrix to be able to continue to do this the money is going to have to come from somewhere.
The last free beta version of the older far less feature packed version of Warring Suns is consistantly being downloaded 12-1500 time a week. It has garnered wonderful reviews from almost ever important Magazine and Web-Site covering gaming and all I have seen in forum posts have been complaints that Matrix is taking away time and resources that could be spent on their favorite game. I have seen people rant about how Matrix is spreading themselves too thinly but what I haven't seen are people going "Hmm, I wonder why Matrix is picking up this game? Wel1, I like almost everything else thev've done, maybe I should give it a try."
(end of rant)(mops brow, gasps for breath).
I'm Hetzer, my ICQ number is 143948813. Download 1.4 give me a call and I'll be glad to help you climb the learning curve. (i'm living in interesting times at the moment but if i'm active on ICQ it means that i'm up for playing/teaching)

Carrier Strike is quite old, and is at the underdogs as "Abandonware". Its graphically equivalent to PACWAR. http://www.theunderdogs.org/ Carriers at War is still available at; http://www.ssgus.com/ccaw.html

There was a thread on this earlier but apparently got dropped off. Someone had made an update to the game(graphics&sound I believe). Can't remember his name(Dave?) but hopefully will see this thread and help you out. I think I may have it on my comp but am at work right now. Will upload and post a link to it if I find it tomorrow.

Carrier Strike

I recently reloaded my "Carriers at War" and find that, thought the graphics may be a bit dated, it's still a great game.

It has the added feature, with the "Carriers at War Construction Kit" upgrade, of playing the Final Countdown scenario where you play as Kirk Douglas and get to watch F15s and Intruders take down the entire Japanese strike force at Pearl Harbor. This can be rewarding after you have had your butt kicked by the AI in another scenario ...

;)

Jane's Fleet Command with the WDP mod is way better than those two games.

Theunderdog site link isn't working. Is there anywhere else I might find carrier strike? My disk died long ago and stupid me never made backup copies :( As far as CS vs. Janes, have you ever tried running janes on a 286 12 mhz system?

Hi,

The new URL for the Underdogs is www.the-underdogs.org. I read in a News-Group that they had some problems with the previous URL. It's all explained in their home page.

That's the one Bernard!

I still enjoy the game. As mentioned above, I put together new graphics and sound which you can get at my website:

http://home.earthlink.net/~tmflood/page3.html

I was also working on a link with Pacwar at the same site. It's still not finished, but you can create some new Carrier Strike scenarios with it.

Also, the "Underdogs" site also has available the Carrier Strike expansion disk, which added new scenarios, expanded night capabilities, and a 1946 scenario.

Regards,

Rich Dionne

Nice to see people still talking about Carrier Strike. It was me about 6 months ago when I did post first(?) post about Carrier Strike and wish to see it remade by Matrixgames :D
That game, even it is quite simple, it´s surely one of the best games ever (IMHO).
I wish I would have enought skills to re-programming it more modern or then create very similar game with same athmosphere what CS could and still can create :) Anybody interested to try? ;)
