600 units, wow thats great for you I would say.

Hes only got 7.1 million men. Thats why I said hes having issues, the SHC units CV seems really low and now I know why.

I would say your probably going to have a field day once your over the river. Clear weather for sure each turn is not until turn 54+.

I am really looking forward to this AAR come summer. He really needs to spend some AP and start combining units or hes going to get trashed. It will take you some time to thin things out, but hes CV is really sad. You have no issue pocketing units.

Turn 51

Overall
We eliminate the pocket created last turn and form four new ones. Right now it feels oh so good playing the Axis, but I doubt it will last . The USSR have started to fall back in alot of areas, so we follow up and make attacks where we can.
We ended at 91 attacks this turn, divided as this; 6 helds, 62 retreats, 7 routs, 1 shatter and 15 surrenders. Not a bad turn this one either.

USSR units in pockets at start of turn
43.

USSR units in pockets at end of turn
35.

Partisans chased away
2.

Losses
USSR : 281.000 troops, 3.492 guns, 326 AFVs, 265 AC.
Axis : 48.000 troops, 558 guns, 98 AFVs, 109 AC.
(although 48.000 troops lost is alot, the gain this turn was 57.000, so a net gain of 9.000 troops for the Axis).

USSR units destroyed
9 rifle divisions, 6 tank brigades, 26 rifle brigades, 2 naval rifle brigades (260 AP).

German pools
Manpower : 266
Vehicles : 167.848
Armaments : 146.638
Hiwi : 11

Thinking time
It seems I have two choices as to where to push, need to think about them before the next turn.

Turn 52

Dieclaimer
Forgot to note the German pools this turn.

Overall
The USSR falls back across the rivers. While this frees up alot of units for me, it also shows the frailty of my force (see below). We keep attacking, and while we bagged the first corps unit last turn, this turn we bagged our first guard unit. That is something I like, since I only see two of them on the map . We had way too many held results this turn however, and that is not good, nor is the fact that my panzer and mechanized troops are wearing down rapidly now.
103 attacks resulted in 16 helds, 67 retreats, 7 routs and 13 surrenders. Unfortunately, we did not manage to pocket as many units this turn due to the rivers and USSR fortifications.

USSR units in pockets at start of turn
32.

USSR units in pockets at end of turn
12.

Losses
USSR : 269.000 troops, 3.266 guns, 296 AFVs, 341 AC.
Axis : 41.000 troops, 391 guns, 136 AFVs, 121 AC.

USSR units destroyed
1 cavalry corps, 12 infantry divisions, 6 tank brigades, 10 rifle brigades, 3 naval rifle brigades. (235? AP).

Partisans delt with
3. This turn they actually did some mischief and cut the main rail line in the south. Bastards!

Maps
Shown from North to South.

You are making excellent progress :-)

A few observations:

1. The stack in Riga has an attack CV of 20 and could be reduced. A defence CV of 15 might be sufficient.

2. A couple of the better infantry divisions are in swamp hexes (mainly 4th Army): 70/69, 71/70, 69/66, 75/74. If you don't go on the offensive here, you may use them in the south for your main directions of advance (e.g., replace them by Hungarians).

3. 2nd Panzer Army is dispersed and has at least two Infantry Corps. How about accumulating all Panzer and Mot Divisions (including those of 2nd Army) into the Panzer Armies?

4. 11th Army has Rumanians, which be transferred to a domestic army.

5. As more Hungarian and other allies will arrive in the next couple of weeks, one could think about fortifying the Dnepr line, including forts.

Regards,

Joerg

Go for the Pripet pocket plan, bro. You don't have the muscle for something bigger, and still you'll bag something like 2 million of hapless souls. That's a lot of hapless souls, and summer will not even be in its teens.

Great job!

It's June, and the Soviet side is still employing tank brigades up front, instead of having them pulled together into tank corps.

Thank you.
Will try to answer your points as best I can
1. True, but they also face the strongest USSR units, I need that city as an anchor for now, but I will try to (next turn, not the one posted below) rotate out those two units, good point.
2. Their intention should be clearer with the turn below
3. Erm. Colours please. So many corps' put there. Have moved some panzers from the blue army into the red panzer army this turn.
4. Yes, a leftover from the Blizzard. A major reshuffling of troops have started now though.
5. Also yes. I am placing troops to dig now, but I must be missing something as my units will not dig further than lvl 2 atm...

I think that right now Brad is concerned about his whole front, and want more units to slow me down, but I am not sure.

Probably in Blizzard when I was seing a marked drop in vehicles, so placed them on rail lines. Never given it much thought apart from that really.

Turn 53

Overall
We eliminate the pockets from last turn, but made no new ones this turn. The picture below shold show why. Someone named H.Istory screamed, and I quote, "Bloody outrage, are you mad? Placing those units there??" as I moved the Hungarians and Italians into position to hold my flanks in the south.
We launched 112 attacks, and scored 10 helds, 75 retreats, 17 routs, 1 shatter and 9 surrenders this turn.

USSR units in pockets at start of turn
12.

USSR units in pockets at end of turn
0.

Losses
USSR : 194.000 troops, 2.517 guns, 173 AFVs, 455 AC.
Axis : 52.000 troops, 567 guns, 110 AFVs, 103 AC.

Losses in total so far
USSR : 5.558.000 troops, 92.727 guns, 20.568 AFVs, 14.544 AC.
Axis : 1.783.000 troops, 17.699 guns, 4.291 AFVs, 3.230 AC.

USSR units destroyed
4 rifle divisions, 1 Guards rifle division, 8 rifle brigades. (90 AP).

Partisans delt with
5.

German pools
Manpower : 390
Vehicles : 177.571
Armaments : 130.195

Well I wouldn't be that enthusiastic... Pocket ain't there yet ;)

And the northern pincer seems low to start, right? You are trying to enlarge the trust first I guess...

Well played. Even if you only get to the rail junction 7 hexes due north of 1st Panzer Army spearheads, then it will cut all rails into the bulge, which will not only limit supply but movement for him as well.

Even if you don't form a pocket, he'll have to pull back out of his forts and you'll have him out in the open to inflict lots of losses. Not only that, but you've outflanked his entire central position of the whole front.

You are doing far better than the last game even with subpar performance in 41'. So still disheartened at all or are you chomping at the bit to see what the next turn brings?

One point of caution though that northern pincer is very narrow and weak as well, basically what Fishbed already posted. Remember to fly fuel in first and have that infantry follow.(Basically as you are doing.lol!)

As always i am really enjoying your AAR. Keep going and may the weather randomization gods smile upon you.

If you get 1/3 of that pocket your sitting good, plus your past rivers.

Totally ignore panzer cv. They still have 45 MP with 20 tanks or 120. Once hes on the run keep going and don't let up. Generally once the SHC is off balance in 42 its toast.

Focus on pocketing units until October. Any manpower centers that you over run that you did not in 41 will really hurt.

Very interesting game.

Not sure how many units he can rail out, but this was why I kept a presence in the swamp.

I am actually more concerned about the Southern Pincer tbh. It is far from any rail heads, and I am running low on Inf to gaurd the avenue it opens up. The northern Pincer should be far better off with more units to protect its immediate flanks, and more MP in it.

Indeed, and even more the bonus, is that IF I close this pocket, there are currently no units behind me and Moscow. I can also turn north, and cut of alot/most of his northern line as well. So if this works out, the situation is drastically changed I think.

1. Well, subpar for anyone but me that is, for me it is average
2. Nah, now I am just overly concerned about the weather holding.
3. It is in CV-terms, and proximity to rail head, and flank-wise actually far stronger than the southern one
4. Thank you. Oh, we will keep going, there was never any doubt about that, the Q was only how soon the Red Army would be in Berlin....Again...

Well, let us hope for more than 1/3 (hmm wonder what they mean by the Norwegian saying "mye vil ha mer og faen vil ha fler" (much wants more, and the devil wants more (souls))
Well, tbh the CV on my mobile units is scaring me, I have mechanized units with a CV of 2... I need these guys to hold any formed pocket as well, not just create it. Yes, I am aware of the possibilities such a pocket creates. The Q will have to be if I should drive for Moscow or turn north and threathen his entire Northern flank.
But now I am getting ahead of myself, this all rests on the assumption that the pocket will be made, that it will hold, that it will be eliminated quickly and that I bag alot of units

Well, that is basically ANY manpower centre

Sorry for Brad's loss with regards to the funeral.

Any chance of closeup pics(of each penetration) and a large overall situation pic this turn? And while we are at it can we see a pic of a northern pincer panzer division as well as a southern one to compare and contrast strength levels? Which Italian division is northernmost in that southern breakthrough?

There is a 15 hex separation between the northern and southern pincer and it looks like he can only block you with railed in forces and units close to the edges of each pincer.

Any attachments you might have to add some power to your infantry in northern pincer?

Might be time to actually micromanage the Luftwaffe and fly some interdiction missions to pin a few Soviet divisions/brigades in place.
