Hi all,

quote:

ORIGINAL: Dixie

BBC News at 6pm. I was in shot for seconds. Literally seconds! I have to say that the archive footage used was a bit poor. I don't remember the Luftwaffe sending formations of Flying Fortresses against the airfields or Fighter Command using P-47s. Or the Luftwaffe using Bf-109G fighters.

Oh well, now I just sit back and wait for the requests to flood in. I expect to be opening a hospital this time next week

Nice Martin - send us a link if / when you find it!

BTW, reporters are as ignorant as ever (if not even more) these days... <SIGH>

Most (90+%) of them have no clue about history... and popular satellite / cable programs doesn't help either... the "history" they present on various channels is appalling...

Few days ago I saw (partially of course - my wife told me that I was swearing at TV shouting that what they show is ridiculous):

#1
Seconds from Disaster - The Bismarck

The premise was that the UK would surrender if Bismarck mission succeeded (and, of course that Bismarck was biggest and strongest battleship of all times)...

#2
Greatest Tank Battles - Stalingrad

The premise was that Soviets would capitulate if Germans won in Stalingrad...

Well, they would have surrendered, wouldn't they? I mean weren't they perennially on the verge of surrendering throughout both world wars? Cuz nuthin' says surrender like the Brits, IMO.

Also, Bismarck was the best battleship of all time. Until she was scuttled.

"History" on TV is nothing more than "entertainment." If you think of it that way, sometimes you get pleasantly surprised by an actual fact.

I have enjoyed the "Men Who Built America" series every Tuesday night so far...even if the characters look nothing like their real life counterpart.

Perhaps you'd like to join me next July when I get to move to a "mystery destination"? Maybe St. Louis, maybe Jacksonville, maybe "who-the-hell-knows?". But I'd be delighted to share the "joy" of the "moving experience" with you. Sometimes I wish U-haul has chosen a different motto then "Adventures in Moving" . How about "a really easy job with no drama"? It's not catch, but it would be very welcome!

After the 1st 3,000 mile move , it's all downhill. Of course the 8-9,000 mile moves still really suck!

After reading/hearing about Steves moving activities I'm quite happy that Sweden is such a small country. I could barely squeeze in a 1000 mile move if I tried really hard to make it happen

No problem. In fact I should be able to SEND YOU packing by then. That is to say your LYB electron-troopers! And in fact, if we were to do it in spring , we could do one more "Mid-America" summit before I'm off to where ever.

On the other hand, if I'm really, really lucky , and Santa brings me what I want , we could hold a "Northern Florida summit!".

Unless Sweden decides to purchase Guam, or opens a base in , oh say Japan, you probably won't need to worry about such a posting. On the other hand , at almost every embassy you DO have defense attaches. Isn't most of the billets within your paygrade?

I'm sure it is. Does it have a large USN/USAF base ? If not, then I'm pretty sure that I'm not going there.

Purchasing Guam sounds like a good idea and a lot warmer as well. Thanks for the tip

The defense attache posts could very well have been within my reach, if it wasn't for the fact that I've found my "cozy spot" at the defense college and thus feel no need to do such a career move

What? You've no desire to summer in Washington DC/ (Shudder) or be the defense attache to "East Ubanga"?

"East Ubanga"?

Ubanga? Isn't that what Berlusconi had at his lavish parties?

On a personal note: I'm so very disappointed to hear that he won't be running for a fourth term. He was always great comedic humor fodder. There hasn't been a European with such an impact on the humor front since...well...Generalisimo Francisco Franco.

It might have been more entertaining to have him flying a P-26 in the PI on the opening morning.

That also seems like a good use of his talents
