How do French pronounce Soult - like Marshal Jean de Dieu Soult ?

Is it So? Is it Sowt? Is it Sowlt? Is it something else? Thanks. Merci.

Well I'm not French, but I've watched Waterloo a few hundred times

I'm sure its Sult - wiith the U being pronounced as you would if saying pull

I'm sorry, I thought I made clear my impeccable credentials vis-a-vis my authority to opine on the pronouciation of the aforementioned French Marshal.

I have watched Waterloo loads of times and that's how Rod Steiger said it.

I think that proves beyond doubt that I am right - I cannot see what on earth gives your French Canadian mother any authority to speak on this subject at all. I mean, has she even seen Waterloo?

But I have access to the highest authority - She-who-must-be-obeyed.

She says "Sult" (the way warspite1 explained) - and she is French.

Well I have had confirmation from three French people (two as per above) that he was pronounced Marshal Sult (the U as in Pull, not as in Gull). One of the guys working on MWIF hails from Marseilles was the third source, so he should know too. Happy with that Natali?

Thank you all of you. I'm very happy.

I am reading a book about Soult in Spain and my brain keeps stumbling when I read his name. It was distracting. I read some more last nite and I'm a happy camper now. Thanks again.
