Hi. Bienvenu. How do French pronounce Soult - like Marshal Jean de Dieu Soult ? Is it So? Is it Sowt? Is it Sowlt? Is it something else? Thanks. Merci.

First off, my French-Canadian mother informs me that bienvenue should be spelled with an 'e' at the end. As for the Marshal's name, she says "So" is the preferred choice here. I have watched Waterloo loads of times and that's how Rod Steiger said it. I think that proves beyond doubt that I am right - I cannot see what on earth gives your French Canadian mother any authority to speak on this subject at all. I mean, has she even seen Waterloo?

Warspite is right. He should be pronounced sult.

Never seen Waterloo and I'm not French either. But I have access to the highest authority - She-who-must-be-obeyed. She says "Sult" (the way warspite1 explained) - and she is French.

I don't speak French, either, but I've heard that when it comes to proper nouns -- especially family names -- there are no rules. The only definitive answer would have to come from the Marshal himself.

One of the guys working on MWIF hails from Marseilles was the third source, so he should know too. Happy with that Natali? Out of curiosity, why do you ask?
