WTF! What the hell happen last night? No full time work for another four years.

Not to go off on a political track but it sounds like you were expecting to automagically have gainful, full-time employment the morning after Romney got elected?

No, but my chances became slimmer. And with taxes going up at the end of the year. This does not help.

Sorry, still dont get it. How did your chances become slimmer? Did Mr. Romney promise you a job in the administration if he got elected? Why would your taxes go up (assuming you didnt suddenly start making significantly more money)?

Lets try it this way. Do think my chances got better. Higher taxes more regulations make employers hire? Plus I have farm land. My taxes are going to be less when they increase? Interesting concept you have there my rosy red rat.

But dude, what indications (aside from certain news networks) do you have of your taxes going up? If the last 4 years are anything to judge by, absolutely nothing will change in the tax rates simply because no one will let this administration increase taxes on those with an income of $250K+/year and no one would be stupid enough to raise taxes on those with less income without that stipulation. If they do, I'll be protesting in front of the White House right there with you.

And what in the world do regulations have to do with hiring? Theyre just the rules you play by in whatever industry youre in. If I have a manufacturing business and all of a sudden the goobermint tells me to increase my employee safety standards, I will not shut down my business in a huff of annoyance. I'll change my business practices to conform with the regulations just like I've done for every other regulation since I opened my business. Sorry, as a business owner I would not have the luxury of picking and choosing which regulations I abide by based on what administration passed them, which is what seems to be the implication here. Oh, and by the way, if I still need a forklift driver, and you happen to be a driver of forklifts, I'll still hire you.

To put in a nutshell, my friend:

I gave up my profit generating company because of regulations.

Well, you and (according to him, in theory) Bill O'Reilly. The rest of us would suck it up and carry on, I think.

Are you familiar with the expression "going Galt"? You go ahead and suck it up. I'm going to hunker down. And that is as close as to talking about politics as I'm going to get.

Amen, brother!

But while the snappish comment by someone who has propably never run an own company implicates I was to weak to work with the regulations - the regulations would've made my legitimate company impossible within five years and already made it almost impossible to increase market share in 2013. So I took the first chance to end it all with just a blue eye.

Regulations make some businesses impossible, while they favor big companies in other fields and make competing with established businesses almost impossible.

Actually I havent heard that expression. But let me put it this way, if youre a successful business owner who decides to shut down his business because you dont agree with the regulations on moral grounds, my hat's off to you. You have more balls than I do. If it were me, I would have made money as long as I was able to. But if someone decides to shut down because theyre a chemical manufacturer who cant run his business without dumping runoff in the local river or a Wall St. hedge fund manager who finds the idea of anyone having actual visibility into what the hell youre doing over there simply too abhorrent, then I believe thats the point.

The chemical plant is a good example for what I should've mentioned: SOME regulations make sense.

Regulations have the characteristic, that they are usually explained as to be necessary to help the people, protect the people, or whatever. While this might be legit in the case of a chemical plant or a water dam, they often are rather the product of the believe people can't take care for themselves - or they are the result of lobbying by special interest groups.

A regulation forbidding motorcycles would make driving more safe, that much is certain. But it would also destroy thousands of jobs in all those businesses that produce motorcycles, the parts for motorcycles, those that sell them, those that repair them. It would also affect the helmet industry, the cycling-wear industry... Always every part from the farmer that can't sell his cow hides any more to the retailer's cleaning woman.

Sure. Some motorcyclists would buy a car instead, not having owned one before. They would also have to rent a parking space in the city, not being able to park where they did so far. But those few extra sales would never make good all those jobs that were destroyed before. Also, not everyone could afford the higher tolls, parking costs, insurance costs...

It's the classic broken window fallancy.

You get my point?

While you know my political pov, you can certainly discuss about the industries and the extent of regulations. But please don't say: regulations have no imapct on the job market!

I have been successful in running my own small buisness in the past , and had planned to open one in the near future. Emphasis on the word "had". I have no plans as of today of investing one penny in a new business in the near future. None. I'll sit on what assets are not taken away from me. WHY? When I'll be rewarded by having even more taken way from me? No one can force me to invest . Or earn one penny more than I have to to survive. I'll be no mans slave. Period.

BTW , the term "Going John Galt" was coined by another Russian refugee to this country. You might pick up some of her works.

Never read Atlas but it makes sense now. Listen, its a personal choice that you make. Any decision you make is valid by default. I probably wouldnt want to be a business owner either, but I have different reasons for that. And that decision would be equally valid.

Yes, but no one is outlawing motorcycles, or guns for that matter. Of course regulations have impact. Theyre designed to have impact. At least the good ones are. And if youre an asbestos manufacturer, well, sorry. My landlord in NY owned a very successful printing business in the 80s. With the advent of the internet and other tech we take for granted now, he stopped being profitable and closed. Sorry.

Now, what in the world are these regulations that everyone is afraid of? I'll tell you honestly, during this campaign I have grown so sick and tired of the silly rhetoric about "job creators" etc that I am simply not able to take the argument seriously anymore. The idea that every single business owner in America will stop hiring because their taxes go up 2.5% is absolutely ridiculous. The idea that they will hire right, left and center if they stop paying taxes entirely is even more ridiculous. Now, I realize that the government can come up with some epic sh!t once in a while. But please tell me what they have actually passed which will cause the gent from Buffalof*ck, ND to not get a job he would have otherwise have had, all other things being equal.

you can only write this because you have your ideological glasses on and never run a business.

2,5% is some business' whole margin...
2,5% of a business making 3.000.000 profit means 75.000 dollar per year. So if the owner want to keep their profit, they either don't hire personell for 75k or let someone go with that salary.

A business' sole purpose is to make money, not to feed the needy.
It is not "from everyone according to his abilities to everyone according to his needs"!

@Paper business
What do regulations have to do with the change of the market by itself? Let me guess, you would regulate and force the continued use of prints to keep him in business?

@Motorcycles
This was an example. If you don't want to understand it, than let's simply guess that some of Al Gore's friends say that motorcycles are sufficiantly powered with just 250ccm. That means no more Harley-Davidsons (or vastly castrated ones). But according to your own words, that wouldn't cause any lost jobs.

Dammmit.....interwebs messing up my jokes. It was a pic of top-door box freezers for sale at WalMart or somesuch with cardboard deer silhouettes in them. The caption was something like "you know you're in Michigan when the decision on which freezer you purchase depends on how many deer carcasses you can stuff in it".

Nothing there, Comrade Red Mouse.

Hmmm....

I guess you had to see it firsthand to appreciate its humor.

My car is being taken away tomorrow It was a good eight years. I'm going to miss her.

Died? No repairs possible?

BTW, have you seen my question about that BBC video few pages back Martin?

Leo "Apollo11"

Repairs are (were) possible, but they've deemed it uneconomical to do so.

As for the vid, if you mean the chap who looked like he was being made to give up part of his lunch break to be filmed for a national news story then it's me. They didn't even put my name on screen did they? I don't know why I pay my licence fee
