I loved "Red Lightning" as well!

That was the 1st game I modified myself (changed data files for more realistic stats)... it was in 1985 I think...

The game I played the most on my Commodore 64 was "Elite" of course!

BTW, I wanted to get Sinclair QL as well but was unable to get "D-Day" strategy on cartridge... so I stayed on Commodore 64 until Atari ST in 1986 with 1 MB or RAM (that was superb truly usable computer much more advanced than Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K and Commodore 64)...

I sold my Atari ST and got an Amiga so I could play Harpoon.

I remember Red Lightning too, loved that game. Also Elite on the Speccy and Dr Turcans 3d wargames as well as CCS wargames (desert rats, Vulcan, Arnhem)

Funny how I choose the Atari ST (512 - I extended it to 1024 immediately by piggy-backing RAM modules on mainboard) and not Amiga (even though I had Commodore 64 beforehand)... I think that the main reason was the excellent small monitor Atari offered...

When my son out grew his Commodore 128 I got him an Amiga. Actually sold it in the late 90's for more money then I paid for it. Those were good machines.

Ooh...the Amiga. I remember that. Some excellent A2A sims on that one. I remember it being a pretty 'hot' machine for its day and time.

My impression of scenario 2 is that it provides for a significantly faster early pace for the IJ player. Having forward positioned fuel and supply galore in Truk in particular, makes for a frenetic earlier pace. Scenario 1 is more realistically balanced, IMO.

At 6pm on Saturday, it was an unseasonably warm 69F at the airport here.

Yesterday, most of the day was in the 20s with some snow. Nuthin' like predictable Minnesota November weather-yessir. I understand some areas in NoDak got 12-16" of the white stuff over the weekend?

Just missed us from where we were hunting to the North Northwest. But 3/4" freezing rain where we were hunting. Maybe 40's by the weekend. We'll see.

Amazingly Elite is still around.....

Check out this link for Oolite which is a downloadable (and extensively modded) GNU GPL version of the game.
Elite Wiki

Apparently it is as addictive as ever!!

There's no flowers on a sailors grave
No lilies on an ocean wave
The only tribute is the seagulls sweep
And the tear drop on a loved ones cheek
We shall remember them.

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England's, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

Heard this on the radio this morning. I thought the author name struck a bell. Read about him in my Gallipoli books.

Not really. The Japanese *do* get significant forward-deployed supplies and fuel. That helps a lot for the early war pace. They also get sizeable home islands resource, oil and fuel reserves above scenario 1-this helps keep their war economy viable longer into the war. There's more early model aircraft in the pools than scenario 1 (e.g., more Oscar Ic, A6M2 at war start). The Japanese also get a few ships-mostly escort vessels, a few extra DDs and 4-5 Guards extra divisions in 1943. This helps.

I'd estimate that scenario 2 (versus 1) adds another 6-8 months (+/-) to the competitive nature of the Japanese in the war and pushes the envelope on Japanese autovictory potential.

Wet dream? Hardly. For that you need to try out the "Reluctant Admiral" and other OOB major re-works with lots and lots and lots of extra, fictitious ships and lots and lots of extra, fictitious capabilities for these fictitious ships.
