Assaulting units:
1st USMC Parachute Bn /1

Defending units:
84th Naval Guard Unit

we drop a Marine para btn onto Madang but the initial attack fails... I really don't know if it's a bug or if it's a design flaw but no matter how many transports I am using, the paras NEVER got any supply on day one... this just sucks balls, I have used more than 100 C-47 plus another 36 USMC C-47 which is more than twice the number of transports needed to drop a para btn so more than 50% of the transports should go in carrying supplies but they simply don't do...

Modifiers shows no lack of supply, so it is possible, that all supply was used in assault. Have you checked what happens, when attack is made against empty base?

I noticed it didn't show a negative modifier for supply but to be honest I don't give much about these modifiers but most often it just doesn't seem to be true anyway. Every single para drop I have done in this game so far sees my paras with no supply at all the turn after I have dropped them and I have checked it every time. And units don't use up all of their supply in one single combat round to end up with 0 supply. Having no supply at all is at least an explanation why the modified av looks horrible all the time. And like I've said before, I don't give much about the modifiers because IMO they don't work. Well, the modifiers may work well, but not the modifiers you get shown with the combat reports.

Just look at the dozens of combats where I don't get any modifiers shown in the combat report.

It doesn't look like the entire battalion dropped. The combat report shows it is a fragment.

it was the full btn, there was nothing left back and there were far too many transport for a single btn. The reason the unit still showed up as a fragment probably is because it only turns into the parent at the end of the turn, after the combat happens, dunno.

I've never paid attention to that. Now that you've seen it and bring it up, I suppose trying the amphib invasion trick is worth a try: Assign enough transports to fly the troops in, plus assign other transports to fly supplies in. I really don't know if that will work with the game engine (will the supply runs get cancelled because they go before the troops and therefore the troops are not there yet, etc.?) but it's worth a shot.

unfortunately that doesn't work as I had that idea myselve earlier too already, if you don't have troops there already, the game will tell you something like "no friendly base or friendly troops at the base" and you can't assign the transports to fly in supplies, just to transport troops that can be air dropped. As soon as you have troops there you can assign your transports to fly in supplies but the first day your paras attack without any supplies.

I don't think they attack without supplies, they just don't have any supplies remaining after the attack? There is no - on supply on your side

as I`ve said a couple of posts above, I don't give much (if anything) on the modifiers shown in the combat report. Most of the time they don't make any sense. And no, I doubt they had any supply because when you think about 50 C-47 only dropping supply, this would be 150 supplies, while the normal need for a para btn is something like 50 and those 50 aren't spent in a single day of fighting but still, every frigin time when I am using paras they end up having 0!!! supplies the next turn.

as to the modifiers, I have checked the btn and the leader got 72, which is pretty much the best around. And what does the modifier say? (-) for leader. Heck, well done.

the IJAAF came back today and we had USAAF fighters patrolling over the Commonwealth troops near Moulmein... I had hopes to see more of my fighters (75 ordered to intercept), the 21 did what they could, downing enemy fighters at a 2:1 rate but only one bomber was downed in the end... usually this discourages Cuttlefish enough to stop his strikes immediately...

hmm, the IJAAF comes back right the day after I had LRCAP over my troops which really surprises me as I've thought it would really discourage CF to encounter my fighters... or perhaps he has just forgot about cancelling the attack...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR Dec 14, 42
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Balikpapan at 64,98

Japanese Ships
TK Meizan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
TK Terukawa Maru
DD Kuretake

Allied Ships
SS KXVIII

seeing a succesful sub attack is a real highlight in the otherwise boring replays...

SS KXVIII launches 4 torpedoes at TK Meizan Maru
KXVIII bottoming out ....
DD Kuretake fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Kuretake attacking submerged sub ....
DD Kuretake fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Kuretake fails to find sub, continues to search...

Escort abandons search for sub

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Manokwari at 86,108

Japanese Ships
xAKL Turusima Maru, Shell hits 10, heavy fires

Allied Ships
SS S-46

even more so when there are two in a row... I'll leave it to you if it was succesful or not, a sub doesn't even carry enough gun ammo to sink a single unescorted small freighter... always been that way... not a single torp was fired...

SS S-46 attacking on the surface
SS S-46 low on gun ammo, McKnight, J.R. breaks off surface engagement and submerges

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Hollandia at 93,116

Japanese Ships
xAKL Nanko Maru, Shell hits 1

Allied Ships
SS S-45

xAKL Nanko Maru is sighted by SS S-45
SS S-45 attacking on the surface
Hyman, W. decides to submerge SS S-45 due to damage

lol, been a long time since I have seen that silliness happening... the sub is of course undamaged but the skipper obviously hasn't got a 90 agression rating so the not so smart thought out routine forces the sub to submerge without doing any damage...

Cuttlefish seems to run several unescorted freighters to his cut off bases...

Moulmein area and the latest development... the majority of our Army has crossed the river and is continuing to march SW to cut Moulmein off, one unit was set to march West to let Cuttlefish think we would move onto the base already while the whole Army will try to close a ring around Moulmein with the spearhead then moving into the base to start the battle... we are operating 6500 av against the Japanese that have several divisions at Moulmein (including a tank(ette) Division)... two more divisions were spotted to come into the area from the East, it's now a race who will be in the hex SE of Moulmein first where also one or more units from Moulmein are moving to... could also be a full retreat though but I doubt that, if Moulmein falls, all of Thailand is threated...

the game continued all the way into 43, we are about 2 months ahead of the AAR. The AAR will stay the same as it has been for over the last 6 months but believe it or not, the game is actually heating up a bit. Could be the last Japanese attempt to at least slow me or the start of really organized resistance.

as you can see on last post's screenshot we had a cruiser squadron going into position to bombard Moulmein which took place tonight... the cruisers do a good job even though halve of them targetted two enemy divisions which is nothing but a complete waste...

this is one of the things I don't understand at all... while CF has been slowly increasing his defense and seems to be a little more into the game lately, he allows me to bombard a base in an area where he should have total air superiority... it's late 42 afterall so why should the RAF/USAAF have air superiority in the area with nothing but Hurricanes supported by 75 P-40E and 200 bombers of all different types, the majority being crappy Blenheims...

my cruisers weren't spotted, if I had to guess I would say he doesn't even have patrols in the area... fighters, patrols and some Betties would mean total air and sea superiority for the Japanese, so it's just another example when he misses his chance while my Army is rolling forward...

this PBEM is more than special with the absence of CF's will to fight. Usually the targets that are bombed don't have any flak at all. Would it be a normal PBEM the numbers wouldn't be high either as we're used to, probably around 80-100 lost to flak at that date. That I have only lost 50 on the ground pretty much also mirrors that this is a very unique PBEM with one side having fallen asleep on all fronts until up to now at least.

that's been an interesting attack happening in the hex SE of Moulmein, the most important spot in the battle for Moulmein because if the Japanese can't hold this hex they will soon be either surrounded in Moulmein or they have to give up the base... we meet three IJ elite divisions, once more without having any support (common for Cuttlefish) and while we take slightly more losses we completely trash one of the IJ divs while our disablements were spread out over all my units which means pretty much nothing bad... got no doubt that we can kick out the enemy, problem at the moment is that our Army isn't well supplied because with the currently given supply line our units are fully filled up only once every four or five days so we'll have to wait a little...

as you can see on the screenshot the three enemy divisions have already been ordered to move West towards Moulmein... I am absolutely positive that we have already won the battle for Moulmein with the given situation as Cuttlefish just reacted far too late, he should have tried to stop my flanking maneuver weeks ago instead of just sitting in Moulmein with something like 6 divisions watching my units crawling through the jungle hexes... the Moulmein area is perfectly suited for defense and if we won't be stopped here, I am absolutely positive that we can overrun all of Thailand in the coming five or six months...

we also got our cruiser squadron moving into position once more to bombard Moulmein...

CT,

Are you playing with the BETA or the Official? If you are playing with the BETA. Are you seeing the kind of crazy fragmentation I posted about in the techsupport? I´m getting 200 plane bombings fragment into 15-20 pieces.

I see you are getting some fragmentation but not nearly as bad as that!

Hi

latest official patch. Have gone away from the betas as it meant upgrading the PBEM just too often. The way it is in my game is the same as it has always been. First one or two "big" waves, followed by the usual small raids < squadron size. So as soon as I will fly those 400+ aircraft strikes beginning some time in late 43 I have to get used to see about a dozen incoming "waves" per strike. And the size of these waves has always been nothing but silly and got nothing to do with any realism nor common sense. It's just what it has always been in that respect. Sorry that I can't comment on the latest beta as the official patch is far beyond the new beta.

I don´t want to upgrade either... But that HQ fragmentation bug is problematic to say the least

If you think fragmentation are bad in the official...wait until the BETA becomes the next official and you will have close to a hundred fragments per turn! I foresee my ESC key being worn out at a rate of 2 per month...

Luckily haven't experienced that HQ bug so far and re the fragmentation, I am not so much against fragmentation, what I find ridicoulos though is the way the strikes look like as it just makes no sense and it sure isn't realistic because strikes didn't look that way 70 years ago, neither in the ETO nor PTO...

no less than 7 bombers lost to ops today of which 5 are 4E... milkruns against undefended targets, no enemy fighter in the air within 1000 miles and 5 4E crash on landing... what should one post in those "it's 42 and I can't fight B-17" threads? You get 15 B-17 per month until mid 42, then two dozen B-24 per month and you lose all of them to ops if you use them once a week without ever encountering a single enemy fighter so why should a somewhat competent IJ player not being able to completely shred the 4E bomber force until mid 43 when finally some usable escorts are available...
