Tolstoi at age 20. I think he bears a passing resemblance to Andre.

Wow! Yer right!

Well, you may not have the lofty birth, wit, writing ability or literary immortality of Uncle Leo, but you can always say you look like him. Should make a pretty interesting tidbit to throw around at parties.

We decided to spend a few years someplace where it doesnt become generally unbearable to go outside for half the year.

Yeah. So long as the wildfires, heat and smog don't bother you. Also, be sure to remember your flak jacket if you want outside to be bearable, vato.

I dont think anything in The Valley proper has ever suffered from wildfires, but I am a bit anxious about those hills the other side of the 118. It is a little too close for comfort.

[holds up hand sheepishly] I know absolutely nothing about Fallout 3. A worthwhile FPS for those slow WiTP:AE days?

Absolutely. But its not really an FPS, per se. Its more of an RPG, in that most of the game revolves around leveling up your character and completing quests. There are no magic/dwarf/orc elements, which usually turn me off on most RPGs out there. There is an FPS component which allows you to blast away "from the hip" if that what you're into, but I think most of combat was intended to be done in VATS, which freezes time and allows you to use your character stats to kill rather than iron sights. Very, very fun game and an awesome universe. Quite a bit of toungue-in-cheek humor, black humor, and even some very sad scenes. The computer terminal entries at the refugee camp outside the Germantown Police HQ get me every time.

You can find it dirt-cheap these days. Definitely give it a shot if you have the time. The main plot line would only take about 50 game hours to complete, but there is so much other content that it genuinely kept me interested for years.

He was born on his father's estate of Yasaya Polyana (Bright Meadow) about a hundred km outside Moscow and was a hereditary Count.

Much of his writing is very witty and even satirical in places. Unfortunately, most of the wit is incomprehensible to later generations much as most of Shakespeare's wit isnt.

I'm sure if you were a Count and had nothing else to do with your time, you'd be more prolific as well.

No. No, I havent. Is much of the wit in that piece incomprehensible also?

quote:

Meh. I'm still trying to say that I look like Brad Pitt. No one believes me there either.

See, people actually know what Pitt looks like. If you say Tolstoi, most folks would just take you at your word.

quote:

Ah yes! Cuz nuthin' says 'happening dude' like phenotypical comparatives to some long-dead verbose commie.

I was about to argue against the Commie bit, but thought better of it. Most of his populist ideas that he came by later in life were very much reminiscent of early Communist ideas. He just had better intentions in an ivory tower/lofty birth/the peons are not spoiled by civilization kind of way.

quote:

ETA: Re-reading his bio, I was impressed with how anarchist / anti-government this guy was. Definitely not a commie!

See above. Not a Commie in the sense that Communism has become associated with in the US thanks to the Cold War, but that part of the development of the Communist ideology in the late 19th/early 20 century which concerned itself with "going to the people" and all that, was very much in tune with what Tolstoi wrote.

Yep, open spaces, dry grass, hot weather, flame source.....but everything west of the 118 where I live is concrete.

Anyone know if any of the new scenarios keep the AI in the game longer than Scen 2

Don't know, NCSU forest. Haven't tried any of them from the Allied position.

Today I learned that the Luftwaffe flies MiG-29s.

I thought they only had NATO hardware.

No longer.
Those were ex-DDR Mig-29 which were taken over by the Luftwaffe after the reunification. One or two of them was sold to the US to be used as enemy planes in trainings.
The rest were handed over to Poland when the Eurofighter entered service.

I guess less than ten years.
They were modernized to NATO-standards quite expensively, but the Luftwaffe has the policy not to have more than 3 major warplanes.
So once the Typhoon was introduced, it was Typhoon, Tornado, F-4 and Mig-29. As there were propably 200 F-4 and only ~22 Mig-29, the Migs were sold for 1 € apiece to Poland.

And I believe the F-4 is entering the final days of service with the Luftwaffe.

I remember reading about this several years ago. American fighter pilots went through training against the MiG-29 with true "lookdown/shootdown" helmet-enabled sighting for their SRAAMs. A rude awakening for the American pilots that prompted many of the targetting systems in the F-22 and F-35 systems.

Are they slated on the F-35?

Yes. I think the last ones will be taken out of service around 2015. I might be wrong though.

The carton mountain is slowly receding. There's some problems moving to a slightly smaller place. Having storage problems.

Ok, now time to pack the computer for moving.

I'll be back in a couple of days. Guess I then gotta set up and use my mobile as a router as well, as I have no cable connection until 1st jan.

Laters guys. Be well.

I think youre pretty lucky that your cell companies will let you do that. Here, most either block tethering outright or charge you an arm and a leg to use it.

Really? That's always been open here. I'm paying ~20 (Euro)/month for a 3G account with a max UL/DL of 10Gb/month. As long as I don't pass that limit, they don't care. Neither should they IMHO.

Good luck with the move, Viking dude!

GOOD LUCK?? Are we not suppose to run and hide whenever Vikings are on the move.

Well, he's only moving some 15km. I think Vikings just strap the furniture to their reindeer and hitch their moose(s?) to their loads to move them short distances like that.

Oh, good. So, I can tell the nuns down the street that they are safe.

There was idea that we get rid out of our old MiG-21's and get Luftwaffe F-4's (very cheaply) in the interim period until we buy proper new aircraft (even now there is proposal by Sweden for Grippens)...

Ah, groin.

Once again Army has snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory on multiple occasions; just like they have for every stinking quarter for the last ten years. I'm thinking of talking to Artillery Branch and see if we can't hook up with the Marines, or somebody. Woof !!
