Hi all,

quote:

ORIGINAL: Grollub

Just had a one hour walk in the city of Kiruna. -12C, light snowfall and the wonderful "knirk"-ing sound beneath your shoes when walking around in the snow.

Picture appended. Sorry for the bad picture quality. Obviously, there were some condensation on the mobile camera lens. Also, light wasn't good as it was some time since the sun went down. Today, the sun went up at 11.11am and down 11.52 ...

Nice Per!

Say, Per, that's a bit on the cold side. Makes our high temperature here for the day (13F) positively balmy. Of course, tonight will be 5F, which is -15C.

Oh, and it's supposed to get colder, ~-25C tomorrow. Tomorrow is also the first day of the polar night, meaning that the sun don't manage to rise above the horizon from tomorrow until end of january.

But Stockholm isn't north of the polar circle. How can it stay dark then?

I'm not in Stockholm. I'm in the city of Kiruna some 1000km north of Stockholm.

Ah! That's where your parents live, right?

Kiruna propably is known to everyone interested in the 2nd WW

The interwebs are a fascinating place. I pulled up a college thesis that observed concerns about population decline and demographic aging as well as concerns about subsurface rock formational instability from all the mining. Anything to that?

Was your father involved in the mining industry?

No, my parents live in the city of Lulea on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, some ~400km to the SE from here

I'm in Kiruna doing a recce for a field training exercise to be conducted later in March.

... and yes, Kiruna should be known to most of the WWII aficionados. At least those with good knowledge of the European theatre.

I misread your first post on this the other day. My thought was "nice FTX in a hotel".

Hi Mike. Just a little song that goes with balmy breezes, moist ladies, and rum drinks. You might remember the tune

It's really true, how nothing matters;
No mad mad world, and no mad hatters;
No one's pitching, cause there ain't no batters;
in Coconut Grove.

Don't bar the door, there's no one coming;
The oceans roar, will dull the drumming;
of any city thoughts and city ways.

The ocean breezes cool,
my mind.;
the salty day are her’s,
and mine;
just to do what we wanta.
Tonight we'll find a dune,
that's ours;
and softly she will speak,
the stars;
until sun up.

It's all from having, someone knowing;
just which way your head, is blowing;
who's always warm, like in the morning;
in Coconut grove.

Ciao. John

Your football season or something more? ... didn't your parents teach you to stay away from those mob-connected bookies?

Cold but beautiful. This is as far up as the sun goes. Latitude N67 degrees. That's a little bit more north than Nome, Alaska (which is at N64)
