Last night I had a very surprising result in my PBEM. My game with ChezDaJez is now into February of 1944. A few days ago my search aircraft spotting a TF about 160nm ESE of Mili - a position too far east to be a resupply run to Tarawa or even an invasion of Baker Island. I figured that it could be either another attempt at a carrier raid on HAwaii, an invasion of either Johnson Is or Palmyra Is, or a commerce raid attempt on my convoys headed to the south Pacific. The last option seemed the most likely. All my fleet carriers have been in the battles around the New Hebrides and Solomons, so waht I had in Hawaii was eight CVEs as well as the Pennsylvania, Oklahoma and Nevada. I sent both south to cover my transport convoys, with the CVEs ending up down near Canton Is. In the turn I received yesterday it started out with the three battlewagons running across the Shoho, Ryujo, 2 CLs and 3DDs. In a running battle that lasted through into the day phase (movement phase), the Shoho went under to five 14" shell hits - the old, slow tubs scored a nice victory. I was worried that the Ryujo would launch an attack that morning, but it didn't happen. I still don't know exactly what he's up to - am anxiously awaiting the return of the next turn to see whether he has a lot more forces in the area of whether my CVEs can clean up the remnants of his raid.
