Hi there Leo... I'm actually going out this new year's eve, the family are taking me and my wheelchair up to our local club. I'm really looking forward to it, first time out in 3 years, and I will see lots of friends I haven't seen for a while.

I think I know exactly how you feel, Des. Mom's confined to a chair too. Any opportunity to go out-and-about gets her so excited. I'm taking her to Pops-on-the-Beach for New Years Eve. She's spent the last three days looking in the closet, and picking out the perfect outfit.

Hope you have a wonderful new year's eve, and stellar new year. In my prayers. God bless.

Ciao. John

Moreso in many European countries where the per capita birth rate has plummeted. When the average female is only producing 1.2 children (several European countries), an aging society and small families are guaranteed. Makes this sort of multi-generational approach not only feasible, but necessary.

Hello you lot. Hope your Christmases were enjoyable. We're back from 9 days in the hill country of Texas, just north of San Antonio. Nice country. Lovely weather, good food, family and no work. Lovely.

In Fredricksburg, TX is the "War in the Pacific Museum". I kid you not. I was incredulous at first, but spent some time there on Saturday. I'll post some pictures. An excellent museum, just outstanding. Probably the best 'treatment' of the PTO as an organic whole I've seen anywhere. For anyone that fancies themselves a WWII PTO grog, this is simply a 'must see'.

Not sure it is linked... Britain, and northern european countries, have pretty low birthrates, yet children move out. Southern european countries have higher birthrates, but those extended households are more common there. And in countries that stand in the middle (France is one), you'll find more of those multi-generation families in the same communities where you have higher birthrates (immigrants, catholics, periurban/rural).

I believe this shows how rural our societies are. In Southern Europe (including France), most of the population was still rural a few generations ago, and such extended families are a hallmark of rural societies. This probably results from the way inheritance worked here. In many southern countries, the land was split between all surviving children, keeping everyone in the farm, and then around the farm. Northern societies kept the land whole by designating one heir (elder/son, chasing the others into the cities, and splitting the families. You can also see the result in the countryside: lots of small fields, with hedges in between, aka bocage.

Francois

Please note that in Europe (especially Mediterranean Europe: Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece etc.) it is quite common for families to stay together for good (i.e. several generations under one roof)!

In my country this is also the case - we usually own the places we live in (i.e. there are very very few that rent apartments - that is very expensive and not worth it in the long run) so families tend to stay together. About 10 years ago there was a trend that new young families try to go away from parents and buy new apartments with cheap credits / mortgages but this turned out to be very very bad decision because of market crash and crisis after 2007... lots and lots of brand new unsold apartments and houses that are empty and inhabited...

That is rather interesting. There could be worse things than living with family I guess...I can't think of it right now, but..

If my children aren't in college or or have a job when they graduate highschool, they'll have a wakeup call when it comes to living under my roof.

Sounds like your XMas would have been so lovely. Our Christmas, my parents, my paternal gparents, her parents, both sets of her grandparents, and a "get together"...we missed my matern gmas side this year. That would have been eight Christmas in two weeks. I don't think my wife will ever give in to having just ours.

Evening tithe...

Happy new year to all you guys, and your families.

Skyped with Chickenboy this morning, and he is a fine looking young chap. Seems almost a shame that he is my JFB opponent, and I'm going to rip his ego apart, when I crush his empire into the dust.
