Wireless for $10 a day at the hotel makes me want to puke..

Been there and refused to do that! I actually took my laptop over to a mall on one trip and used Starbucks free wifi to send my PBEM turn.

The real kicker is that some of these hotels advertise free WiFi. Of course, it only works in their lobby area. If you want it in your room, you've got to pay through the wazoo. It's a stupid and annoying pricing gimmick.

Des,

For some reason, Skype is not delivering messages to you-or you're not picking them up / logging in. Looks like you've updated the DropBox with a new 080 turn. Correct? Are you done with it?

While we're troubleshooting Skype please send me an email for turn confirmation.

Hotel wifi? Don't you colonials have the ability to tether your mobile phones?

Eh? What's all this about the 'violins on television'? Why, I sometimes holler out to my wifey, "What's for dinner?" Is that what you there folks callin' "wifi"?

I tether my horse to yon hitchin' post-why would I want to tether my wifey to it? You guys might get away with that sort of thing across the pond, but we can't do that here.

Morning tithe... that's a nice Horse that John's Sister owns, I like Horses and strangely they like me, must be that natural charisma of mine.

I also really like that new wheelchair that Oni has found for me, but I think I'd modify the weapons to fire paint-balls or Chicken pallets.

We've sorted the problem with Skype messaging, it was just Chickenboy's over-excitement.

Most carriers allow us to pay extra for the privilege of tethering to our mobile phones.

My dear chap! I do feel sorry for you, you poor backwards colonials Someone call Bono, or even Geldoff, this simply will not do. How can they rest when people are deprived of high speed internet whilst away from home?

Actually, it depends on the network here in the UK, but seeing as my contract allows for unlimited data usage I tend to use my phone rather than some hotel wi-fi network that's chock full of random people slowing down MY browsing.

For those who you who are interested reference the Spitfire incident at East Midlands airport...

I heard through the grapevine today that the accident was caused by the seat to stick interface. In this case it accidentally operated the undercarriage lever to up instead of selecting the flaps to up. Now this is a surprise to many people as the flap control lever is (a) a totally different type of operation and (b) on the other side of the cockpit altogether. Word has it that they've racked up a £400k repair bill At least it hadn't just had a very expensive major servicing. Oh wait, it had!....

Over here an unlimited data plan (which they are all phasing out, BTW) or a data plan of any kind prohibits tethering unless a tethering plan is included. And they monitor people's data to find people who tether anyway...

There is such cutthroat competition among the operators here that if any of them even whispered something of disallowing tethering, they would immediately lose a chunk of their customers.

There are a number of national purveyors of phone contracts here too. Available plans run from the pay-as-you-go or prepaid plans all the way up to unlimited 'family' plans. Prices vary accordingly. I'd say that $75-$100 / month will get you an 'all you can eat' buffet in terms of data / tethering / texting, etc. etc. That would equal about 60-75 euros equivalent. Sound about right?

The 'ceiling' on most data plans is between 2-4GB / month. Plenty for most moderate use, but tethering, playing lots of 4G movies / video and the like will eat that pretty quickly. You can always upgrade from the baseline (for a modest fee, of course).

It sounds steep to me! I'm paying £30 a month for unlimited data, 5000 text messages, 5000 minutes to the same network I'm on and 2000 minutes to any other network or land line.

About $48 or thereabouts.

We have high-speed broadband/mobile data/texting with two smart-type cellphones (rent to own), and 40GB data limit. Plus a landline with a free calling package, and all this for $104.98NZL/month.

Try using-up 40KB of data in a month, even with movies on demand we haven't done it yet.

That's really expensive! I have unlimited data traffic attached to my normal mobile account. Sum of everything together lands somewhere in the vicinity of $35-40 ...

You and Dixie are citing much cheaper rates. Does this take into account the amortization of your phone over a two year commitment?
