Sometimes I see combat messages that a fighter is out of ammo or disengaging because he is low on fuel. Where does the game keep track of this information? Are all fighters assumed to have the same amount of ammo?

It doesn't. There are a number of passes available and the rest is an abstraction based on dice rolls etc. It is more to give flavour to the game ... PS> I have no access to the code though.

during a combat-replay, we can assume that the game-engine is rolling its dice against a complex matrix that includes the plane's capabilities; the pilot's EXP, Skill & Fatigue; the sqn commander's skill & aggressiveness; altitude difference; base supply-level; etc.

but the combat-replay screen has only a limited vocabulary of msgs is can show, it can't tell you that "low-experience pilot loses contact w/ wingman, his radio isn't working, he phreaks & heads back for home."

that would be really too much detail, it's enough in this game to watch your sqn's fatigue, give it the best available pilots for its mission, keep it up-to-snuff w/ pilots & planes, & keep its base well-supplied.

if you can't do all of this, then it's time to realize that mebbe you're on the losing end of this fight, so should i reinforce, withdraw, or fight to the last man w/ what i've got?

Low fuel and out of ammo are just random. I've seen that plane is out of ammo before there have been any shooting. Or maybe support men forgot to reload the guns.

Or they jammed. That was actually quite common ...
