Oh, it's (airquotes) "laser beams" now, is it? The tin foil hat brigade is suggesting that it was a ready squadron of 4x fighter jets that were scrambled for intercept and shot it down. There's just so many implausible aspects of that, I don't even know where to start.

I'm waiting for a link to this news article from a reputable source.

By the way, the crater purported to be from the impact is bogus. It's b-roll footage of Derweze.

Gladiatt. A very nice French dude that used to hang around here.

He's probably busy looking after Madame Gladiatt. She was taken quite seriously ill at one point and needed a lot of care. Hopefully he'll find time to come back one day with the news that she's doing better.

I am jealous for fresh seafood. I fish every waking hour... so that is a fresh as I get..

It is the roux, my friend. That's what makes a decent gumbo. I've made this with Winn Dixie leftover, cheapness, seafood, and it tastes damn near as good.

The cooks out there are likely to go 'well duuuh!' but I should do some roux stuff. I use a 12 inch cast iron skillet. I want the flour and base to be very thin in the skillet and a wide and shallow one works best. Heat is applied to the entire mess evenly and it scrapes and stirs to a beautiful Mahonagy brown all at the same time. If the utensil was deep and shallow, the top portions would be trying to 'cook' and wouldn't be roasting up nicely.

That's one of my "secrets" that aren't really secret. Do the roux is a wide shallow and not a deep narrow. I prefer cast iron because of the heat transfer and retention, but any decent cookware does the deed.

Next; my thoughts on congestive snot as a food: Oh, so sorry, on okra and its alternatives.

Yeah, but it's so much easier to be an idiot, and not let yourself be encumbered by facts.

Ok, I'm kinda typing this as I'm cooking, so hope it's working for you.

I use a shallow/wide pan for the roux. I use the halfway marks for stove heat. I have Pink Floyd on the headset and spend 15-20 minutes stirring and scraping the roux till it looks the color of well treated oak. Then I move it to an empty burner and let it embroglio (another reason I use cast iron) till it's a deep mahogany. No muss, no fuss, no crusty crap to wash from the pan, and no burnt stuff to hurt the final gumbo. Da roux is da true.

Just picked this up from the IL-2 Mission4Today forums:

quote:

The Husband Store.

A store that sells new husbands has opened in Manchester where a woman may go to choose a husband. Among the instructions at the entrance is a description of how the store operates:
-------
You may visit this store ONLY ONCE!

There are six floors here. The value of the products increase as the shopper ascends the flights. The shopper may choose any item from a particular floor, or may choose to go up to the next floor, but you cannot go back down except to exit the building!
--------

So, a woman goes to the Husband Store to find a husband. On the first floor the sign on the door reads:

Floor 1 - These men have jobs.

She is intrigued, but continues to the second floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 2 - These men have jobs and love kids.

'That's nice,' she thinks, 'but I want more.' So she continues upward.

The third floor sign reads:
Floor 3 - These men have jobs, love kids, and are extremely good looking.

'Wow,' she thinks, but feels compelled to keep going.

She goes to the fourth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 4 - These men have jobs, love kids, are drop-dead good-looking and help with housework...

'Oh, mercy me!' she exclaims, 'I can hardly stand it!'

Still, she goes to the fifth floor and the sign reads:
Floor 5 - These men have jobs, love kids, are drop-dead gorgeous, help with housework, and have a strong romantic streak.

She is so tempted to stay, but she decides to continue on to the sixth floor, where the sign reads:

Floor 6 - You are visitor 31,456,012 to this floor. There are no men on this floor. This floor exists solely as proof that women are impossible to please. Thank you for shopping at the Husband Store.

{insert rimshot}Badda Boomp

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Wife Store

PLEASE NOTE:
To avoid gender bias charges, the Husband Store owner opened a New Wives store just across the street with the same rules.

The first floor has wives that love sex.

The second floor has wives that love sex and have money and like beer

The third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors have never been visited!

[insert cymbal crash] Clang!

Early Saturday morning tithe. Daughter unit (the one that woke up at 7am on a Saturday) decided to clack around our top floor in her Cinderella slippers. Hell of a way to wake up. I've heard quieter roofing crews.

I assume you've been following Russian language news blurps / telecasts regarding the Meteorite? Other than the expected comments by Zhirinovski (), learn anything interesting?

Zhirinovsky is one of a kind. Oddly enough, there are very well thought out and logical thing that come out of his face occasionally. But at all other times...ay dios mio.

Havent been following it really. As far as I understand, there's not much to say that hasnt been said already. I've learned to check back on things like this about a week later when the excitement has gone out of the story and you can get some sources to distil it to the bare facts instead a lot of speculation and general bs.

Ok, I was doing Floyd, but it was a skoosh to heavy for what I was doing, so went with David Grissman/Jerry Garcia's Old and in the Way.

On his white horse, mescalito;
He comes riding into town;
Bet your woman's up in bed;
With 'ol Panama Red.

Panama Red, yeah Panama Red;
He'll steal your woman, then he'll rob your head;
Oh Panama Red ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp2WjnFmNdE

And tons of other gems. Some of the finest guitar work Jerry Garcia has ever done. If you can find it on DVD this one of the finest bluegrass music collections ever made.

I've been noticing that the Russians use cheap *** windows. Single pane, easily broken, all that. In the Ural mountains-haven't the Russians heard of double pane windows? What about insulation?

Most of those structures were built in the 60s and 70s, if not earlier. As I recall, my grandparents dealt with the insulation issue by gluing several layers of newspaper strips dipped in rice glue over the perimeter of the window (and any other parts that might admit a draft) when they were winter prepping the house in the fall. This is why most traditional Russian structures dont have big windows.

But let's not split hairs. The first place I lived in in NY was a house in Sheepshead Bay built in the late 40s that had single pane windows (not original but probably dating from the 60s or 70s) and cinderblock walls.

Man. This place may be cold, but the building construction is much better than more temperate areas out there. Cinderblock walls and single pane windows? You can just *see* your heating dollars flying away...

But then there's one that's prolly my all time favorite. Dave Bromberg's The Holdup. George Harrison on slide guitar, Jerry Garcia on "backup", Butch Trucks on drums,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QxqEALeoVU
Stick up your hands, you must stand and deliver;
My stomach’s empty, my clothes are all torn;
Open your hearts, to the joys of the giver;
All of your pockets, are terribly worn.

This is a holdup, no way to mistake it;
We’re men of violence, so don’t fool around;
If you have money, we’re going to take it;
You try and stop us, you’ll end underground.

When we have your money, we’ll ride towards the sunset;
At Rosa’s cantina, we’ll stop at the door;
We’ll spend all your money; just getting the nose wet;
Tomorrow evening, we’ll be back for more.

So hand us the money, don’t stand there and shiver;
Tax time is coming, give alms to the poor;
Or I’ll put a bullet, right through your best liver;
Wealth is disease, and I am the cure.

When we have your money, we’ll ride towards the sunset;
At Rosa’s cantina, we’ll stop at the door;

I am the cure;
I am the cure;

And check him out with Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassidy on some of the ecclectic Hut Tuna sides.

But the one tune I would take to a desert island for the rest of my life is Fish Scale by David Grisman Quintet. David Grisman, Tony Rice, Darol Anger, Bill Amatneek, Todd Philips. The studio version is on The David Grisman Quintet and doesn't seem to be on youtube. But there's a live, reunion version from 2003 that's even better. The audio sucks, but listen close and watch Tony Rice. He does things with a guitar that just aren't natural. IMHO, the greatest flat picking guitar player that was ever born, and goldarn close to Andres Segovia as one the greatest guitar players ever ... ever.

This is the live reunior version.

I think it was built in simpler (and cheaper) times. They kept it very warm though. I think it might have had oil heating.
