That's nice... we had 70 cm of snow (that's about 27") few weeks ago... not all of it is melted (big black-grey mountains of snow still persist on some sidewalks)...

I would bet!

Whas is your avg snowfall/moisture table a year? They say for every foot of snow, that is about an inch of moisture..

Some real good four wheeling fun.

On average it is about 10" of snow to equal 1" water. Down your way it may be a heavier snow and it might be less say 8" or 9" per inch of water.

Here thus far it seems to be an average winter. So far a little over 37" of snow for the season. Average is about 48" for the whole season with about 2 months to go. And each day gets a little closer to golf.

Hang in there buddy. Got your schnapps and cocoa at the side?

It is a wet snow, and you're correct on the ratio of snow to moisture.. its about 10 inch of snow for ever inch.

I've had some time on my hands lately(diabetes is a pain) and was watching ken burns: The War and noticed a few things I really never fully can wrap my head around. They were covering Guadalcanal and the casualty figures still can't sink into my thick skull.
Starving American marines on one night lost 30 something marines but killed over 900 Japanese. Reportedly over 20k japanese were killed on that island over the course of the fighting. I'm sure to some here you already know the figures but its just appalling how many were killed compared to US casualties.

Our guys were rookies having never fought a battle and the Japs haven't been defeated and were elite troops supposedly.
Just really got to me I guess having never really say down and thought about it.

Somewhat sucky week in the mouse household...but relatively good news at the end.

No idea... but we got 50 cm of snow in December and then another 70 cm of snow in January... this broke almost 200 year old snow fall record on both occasions...

Some Japanese most certainly had previous experience but they lacked modern weapons, modern equipment and modern infantry tactics thorough the Pacific war... it was no contest...

BTW, the starvation Japanese experienced on the Guadalcanal was much worse than US Marines!

Every single control surface was out of rigging Except the rudder, but that's because it's not fitted to the aeroplane at the moment. The adjustment points for all the controls are, at best, awkward to reach and at worst painful after a short time.

I appreciate the comments Leo and I could imagine the starvation. The nararration from the program suggests both sides were starving. They even have life survivors of the battle commenting. The thing that is getting to me is that why didn't our guys get wiped out? We supposedly were out numbered , the japs sent our cruiser screen to the bottom of the sea and the supply ships scattered. japan used the "Tokyo express "to reinforce and supply their men at night yet we slaughtered them. . I do understand how surrender was not honorable as a Japanese but just can't understand it.

I couldn't imagine the hell that was taking place on that island and for that matter the entire island hopping nightmare of the war. Explains. A little bit why my grandfather refused to ever talk about the war , he was a dauntless tail gunner in the South Pacific.

There's probably a whole lot of factors at play, from automatic weapons and defensive positions on the American side through to the Japanese assuming that everything was lost so fighting accordingly.

Leo "Apollo11"

Rises, and studiously grasps lapels: “Now I have heard much nonsense, from the Opposition benches, about the American supposed moon landing, and their reports the moon seems to be made of a Gouda, when we all know that the best of our scientists have conclusively demonstrated, by the most elegant theory, that the moon is made of overripe Stilton.

This is clearly a case of empiricism gone rampantly wild. Who, in their right mind would believe the reports of Americans, over our government scientists, about cheese? Why that is almost as nonsensical as asking fishermen about historical climactic conditions. Now we all know that fishermen are uneducated, unwashed, and likely to be Irish, or some other such race, and those that support them, as they support this moon nonsense, are at best, misguided Home Rule enthusiasts, and at worst, frothing revolutionaries who wish to rape our women and devour our children.

I ask you, Gentlemen, is this empiricist nonsense, from the Opposition, to be quietly borne, or shall we not put forth all the power of Government, in support of our scientists and their paid-for scientific theories?”

Pompously grasps lapels and eases an oversized bottom into a too-small chair.

“Harrumph, harrumph, harrumph.”
