The BB Indiana and the BB Washington, supported by 4 DDs, surprised our ships (2 BBs, the CL Sentai and 2 modern CLs, along with 4 modern DDs) at 7,000 feet.... the Musashi, slowed to 19knots, immediately ate 6 penetrating hits of 16inch rounds

Wow -- nothing like a battlewagon duel! But 7,000 feet is derringer range; are you sure you don't mean 7,000 yards?

With the end of July 1943 the fate of Rabaul is already decided. The I US Corp conquered Torokina, after 6 days of fightings. 3 deliberate attacks in a row, followed by a shock attack (always supported by several squadrons of 4Es on ground attack role), destroyed our 17th Army that was defending the key base at Bouganville.
A reinforced regiment wasn't enough, clearly. The 2 reinforced australian divisions showed what they can do...
Now with a big base just 5 hexes south of Rabaul, the fate of my big base is clearly decided. Now it's just a matter of time before he destroys it.

The only good news is that, on the 30th, we sunk the CA New Orleans with 4 more sub torps

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at Torokina (109,130)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 19309 troops, 327 guns, 260 vehicles, Assault Value = 620

Defending force 8549 troops, 87 guns, 90 vehicles, Assault Value = 65

Allied adjusted assault: 1571

Japanese adjusted defense: 73

Allied assault odds: 21 to 1 (fort level 1)

Allied forces CAPTURE Torokina !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), fatigue(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
3170 casualties reported
Squads: 40 destroyed, 15 disabled
Non Combat: 190 destroyed, 21 disabled
Engineers: 18 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 65 (61 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 47 (45 destroyed, 2 disabled)

here's the combat report for that sad day...

Interesting to read this after reading posts from both players about the turn.

In my opinion, I would be horrified if I was the Allied player. No one would be considered a good leader if enemy surface units were penetrating their landing forces, sinking dozens of landing craft and sending some 4000+ soldiers to the bottom. That Admiral would, IRL, be dismissed.

Even if the numbers don't even out (with your air losses), this was a sizeable victory at sea.

Well, that would be true in RL...but in game terms the losses for the allies were absolutely replaceble.... while the loss of the Musashi...not so much

Thanks for the morale boost however mate! Really appreciated

The new month opens with a GREAT VICTORY for the IJN, which, in a certain way, can be seen as a revange after the shown inability of the IJA to defend the isles the navy has so proudly conquered.

When the first bombardment of the Rabaul fleet went so bad 10 days ago (with the heavy damages occurred to Mutsu, Musashi and Yamashiro and the failed attempt to stop the american landing at Torokina), we had decided to send the KB back to the Pacific, escorting a strong surface fleet (2 BBs, 3 CAs, 3 CLs and 15 modern DDs) to Rabaul.
Then the american showed their carriers and the great air-naval battle of Rabaul occurred, when Japan lost 500 planes for good without scoring a single hit.
So the american CVs and the whole surface fleet was at the Solomons... how to exploit it?
I've started to recon every single allied base in the Solomons and spotted a weak spot in their defences.
Thousand Ships Bay and Tulagi were heavily defended, and so it was Vella La VElla. not less than 300 fighters and 500 bombers were distributed among these bases... but Rekata Bay only had 300 bombers (mainly 4Es) in it...without a single fighter....
There, at Rekata, the allied landing fleet was stationing, after the Torokina operation. My recon said BBs, APAs, DDs and several LSTs werelingering in those waters...

On the 30 and 31 July i tried to avoid any contact with the enemy subs north of Rabaul and positioned the KB NE of Kavieng...

On the 31st what appeared to be a huge CVTF popped up 2 hexes south east of Rekata...very close to Tulagi...where some more enemy BBs were reported....

When, on the 31, Torokina fell, i knew my time was running up...in few days the Catalinas will have moved there and the american greedy eye would have be free to roam anywhere north of Kavieng and up to Truk... We had to move, and move fast!

I ordered a run at full speed for 13 hexes, hoping to avoid any sub contact... destination: 3 hexes north of Onnekotan Java.

The goal was to attack his weak spot and to avoid any major engagement with his CVs... so only 7 hexes for my Jills and Judys. same for the Jakes and recon-Judies.
The whole KB, minus the Kaga and the Hiyu.

The risks were high... if all those 500+ LBA bombers were set on naval strike... if the enemy CVs moved from their position (i calculated that we would have stopped ONLY 8 hexes north of those CVs...)... if the enemy fleet moved back... if a sub would slow down oneof my 2 CV TFs?....

Well...in war you have to risk. We needed to slow the american advance... we also needed to show we, despite the heavy losses, still have fangs to bite back...and bite hard

When the morning arrived our CVs were exactly where they were supposed to be. No reaction from the enemy CVs...

Zeros from Zuiho and Soho were ordered sweep Rekata and clean the way for the upcoming strike...they met some 27 P-40Ks in a leaky CAP mode from Tulagi or Thousands Ships Bay...

The flak was murderous (we are in DBB, remember)... but our bomber pilots ae the best of the best...still pre-war mostly....the enemy CAP could interfere....

Abe and Nagumo wisely decided to give another attempt considering how the allies were clearly out of position to counter....
111 Zeros escorted 140 Jills and 76 Judys over the bay of Rekata...and found, behind some heavy clouds, the ships left burning in the morning...and it was a massacre!!!...more 80 bombers followed up to give the final death sentence to the last surviving CAs....

CA Indianapolis, Northampton, Houston and Chester are reported sunk.
CL Newcastle too.

To the list i think we can add 3 big AOs, 1 APA, 1 AKA and 4 DDs, plus some LSTs, for the loss of nearly 30 planes (and 19 pilots).

Not a decisive victory...but a victory nonetheless!

You are a sneaky crustacion.  I know how Brad feels watching this - his ears and cheeks are burning and he can feel some of his hair turning gray.  That's not a good feeling (I should know).  Well done, you ol' barnacle.

Don't know what a crustacion is... tried to google it... but only found a voice in the "urban dictionary" that said: " a crustacion i'd like to **ck"...

I use my pre-war American CAs as CV escorts and allow the newer CLs for my SC TF, so this would hurt as Brad will be getting lots of CV/CVL/CVEs in the later half of '43 that will require escorts.

This will be more a psychological victory for you as it will get Brad to focus on ensuring more of his non-front line bases have adequate fighter protection if he has shipping. Good use of your CVs. I think Brad will need to devote a PB4Y-1P to long range naval search vs dividing them up for long range recon missions. Maybe I will have to do so in my game.

Rader thought (past of teach?) this very same lesson when he used his KB to attack and sink 34 CVEs anchored at Uruppu Jiima.... never leave your ships in the same position for a long time!!!!!!

Thanks Micheal. I think he spotted my CVs two turns ago. The DL over them was 4/4 and 5/5 so he knew i was near Kavieng... i think he didn't expect me to dare so much and attack right where his CVs were parked

GJ, I don't think I spelled it right.  Crustacean?  It's a family of sea creatures, but I just like the sound of the name.  :)  And that brings to mind an old ballad by the American singer, Mary Robbins:  "A white sport coat and a pink carnation..." which some wag modified into "A white sport coat and a pink crustacean...."

yes, a Lobster for example is a crustacean, right? or a Crab...

Well, it seems that in the american slang crustaceous has a completely different meaning

Wow! Outstanding job, dude! You have received a JFB medal [the honorable order of gilded crustaceans with crysanthemum clusters] for your sneakiness. Job well done.

Great Job. The more you force him to spread his forces to cover rearbases, the weaker (or less overwehlmingly strong should I say) is his operational fist. Good victory and a morale booster. Although you don't want to get repetitive, this and the Saumlaki operation are typical of that aggressive defense that Japan has to use once he looses the initiative.. Well till early/mid 44 anyway, past that point it gets harder..

Thx Chickenboy and Veji!

It's not over yet. Now i need to run away from his possible counterattack. His CVs are very close and he could get into a striking range distance pretty easily.
I'm setting up a kind of a trap...just in case he really wants to run towards me.
My CVs will move back to Ponape (far away from his subs), where i have created a strong LBA system.
120 fighters and 200 torpedo bombers (with an air HQ) are waiting there. Range:11.
My CVs are low on torps obviously so i'll have to hope the LBA will give me a hand if the americans arrive.
12 subs are already creating a safety line north of Onnekotan Java and 3 DD TFs are moving around in a screening role.

May become interesting....

The american CVs chased us down...
We run away...and the enemy's CVs stopped right 8 hexes south of us... the sub trap didn't work thanks to the extremely good allied ASW...
I hoped for a long shot... 8 hexes...perfect right?

Nope... the US CVs were right beyond severe storms and none of my bombers launched against them.... instead they decided to go after a CVE TF parked 1 hex east of the CVs....and only a small portion of my bombers launched....and got impaled by the leaky CAP... more han 200 crack planes shot down... 2 CVE sunk and 1 more possibly... but not a single hit on his CVs....

He's now 13 hexes south of Ponape...which is filled with 88 highly trained Jills, 40 Crack Frances and 100 Zeros on escort....

Overall i'm not happy with this outcome

Ouch for the plane and pilot losses. Still as the war progresses, everytime you sink some of his stuff without losing some of yours, it is a form of victory...

Well, it hurts to lose those guys, but planes and pilots can at least be made again. Every time you sink a ship you reduce his ability to go forward right now, and that element of saving time is what is really important I feel. It's not the numbers because he will make 50 more CVEs, but right now he doesn't have those, so his next moves will be without these three you jet nailed.

I'm loving your counter-strikes. It's been a very creative defense. Lots of surprise and drama, as usual!
