Originally posted elsewere and moved for your reading pleasure.

Decided to pick up UV for relief time during the holiday vacation with the relatives with the following thoughts and questions.

No paper manual is good. And not just because it says so in side the box. :D
Unfortunately the benefit of the paperless manual should be something kept up to date with all the information you could every hope to need. What is presented is filled with grammatical mistakes and lack of substance.
Numerous items that would be of great assistance are either not included or covered in minimal detail leaving you filled with the thought that there is something here that you probably need to know.

The screen presented when saving a game provides wonderful detail while saving your scenario. When you go to the load screen no information is presented unless you have specifically added it yourself during the save process.

Ship waffling between ports is mercifully gone from the days of PacWar. Main reason I never finished a game of that was seeing a ship suddenly decide to not continue on to its destination and also drag its heel on returning to source. Particular bad when sending some of the damaged ships to San Fran from Pearl as they would then decide to park off the west coast.

Tried to use the windowed option to browse portions of the manual during early play. Don't know if the problem was XP related but UGH. Bad color graphics mad this extremely unpleasant.

BTW did you know that Night air operations are only flown during the Night Phase. If not it is highlighted so you don't forget!

Why do my troop load missions seem to fail so often. Even when meeting the [I believe undocumented feature of] 1 ship per unit frequently the TF fails to load all units and at some point will then switch to unloading on its own.

For the missions of section 8.6 how are the logically carried out?

When new units arrive why isn't there a list of those units also presented?

Why isn't max squadron AC capacity listed for managing those units?

The manual says that aircraft will adjust to the appropriate altitude to carry out there attack, but also warns that the aircraft is subject to flak attack at both levels. How/why is this done? Does the dive bomber set below attack altitude fly to target, vertically ascend and then dive? Could flying higher ever be more dangerous where flak is concerned? How are torpedoes bombers affected?

If I get a message window saying an enemy ship is sunk is this a true
verification? [with FOW on]

Are the initial jap pilots that much better at recon? I get several reports from scenario start saying SS units have been spotted and frequent attacks.

For the US advanced damage control, is this an option for play balance
between players and which selection is historically? [on?]

Non fleet carriers, from experience should they ever be risked as part of the main CV task force for anti-CV patrol?

SS torpedoes only reloaded at Brisbane and Noumea?

Do search aircraft auto empashize a certain direction or should search arcs be added.

I would like a better separation between opening a task force menu and
seeing its destination, like making it a right click or left click.

Default preferences are actually quite usable for just starting the game as opposed to those of some other products.

Why no message for air units that abort or fail to carry out their mission for other than weather/sighting reasons currently provided?

What's your experience on approach to build a forward base, [i.e. most
successful in the shortest time] through New Guinea or along the
Solomons?

Knowing that it would be difficult to make an even stance against the jap CVs at the beginning of the game I decided to try and stike his surface/transport fleet. I plotted my fleet to the NE of the solomons and launched my strike from there. Between the damage done by 2 sorties and the followup by subs I eliminated almost the entire jap amphib group, but they still managed to get most of the men off. Sent 4 APs 3 DDs and a couple other ships underneath.

Of course that wonderful long ran airpower got me even as I dashed away. They managed 3 bomb hits, 1 250kg each on both carriers and a CA.

At this point, wow is damage repair slow. The CA had sys at 54 so she went right back to Pearl. The carriers were at 15 and 25. After a week seeing the numbers not move I transfered the fighter wing from Yorktown to Long Island and sent here to Pearl. Will this speed up repairs on the other CV since jobs no longer split? [minimal coverage in manual on this]

As a result of this I found another interesting developement. The group I sent to the CVE within 2 days decided to change from the 16 F4F3s to F4F4s. But now their is only 4 of them. With only four I should have just let the entire group leave with the CV. My remaining CV kept F4F3s.

How does overland supply work. From my well stocked PM to Bunga is only 3 trial hexes of movement.

Exactly what is the supply formula for movement representing [purpose]. Does the initial point come from the origination hex of the ground unit or a supply point/base?

I always thought the Airacobra were pretty much crap till I moved 2 large groups of Wirraways to PM for extra CAP. [Stocked both Gili and PM pretty strong before IJN was able to turn its attention south.] Wow they are truely POS when trying to engage other fighters.

Just received the first load of AVs from Pearl. Whats the best use for them?

Hi Lupi and welcome aboard. I'll try to respond ot a few of your questions/comments.
Tried to use the windowed option to browse portions of the manual during early play. Don't know if the problem was XP related but UGH. Bad color graphics mad this extremely unpleasant.
Alt-tab works great for me and I run XP so not sure here. Maybe a video card driver issue?
Why do my troop load missions seem to fail so often. Even when meeting the [I believe undocumented feature of] 1 ship per unit frequently the TF fails to load all units and at some point will then switch to unloading on its own.
You are correct that only one unit can be loaded per transport and some units will also require more than one ship. If your ships are unloading after loading, I suspect you haven't set a destination for them. Try setting the destination before they complete the load and see if that helps.
When new units arrive why isn't there a list of those units also presented?
You should be getting a list of all newly arrived ground and LBA units when playing against the AI. Additionally you are also notified when new ships arrive in theater. This was added in one of the patches.
If I get a message window saying an enemy ship is sunk is this a true
Yup, check the sunk ship screen, these are confirmed.
For the US advanced damage control, is this an option for play balance
I generally play with it on and its historical. USN damage control was far superior to IJN from crew training to ship design, but thats for another thread :D
SS torpedoes only reloaded at Brisbane and Noumea?
You can reload your subs at any port with fuel. You can only reload mines at Brisbane or Noumea.
At this point, wow is damage repair slow......
Flotation and fire damage will repair fairly quickly in decent sized ports, the larger the port the faster the repair. System damage is slower and very slow on capital ships. Its a judgement call but you might consider sending any non essential capital ship thats over say 25-30 sys dmg back to Pearl/Tokyo.
I always thought the Airacobra were pretty much crap till I moved 2 large groups of Wirraways to PM for extra CAP.
You are quite right, the Wirraways are nothing but targets in a CAP role but do okay in a naval/ground attack role.

A good resource is: Spooky's UV Site as well as searching here.

Good luck with your game and give PBEM a try when you can.
