I was wondering what should I do when I still feel overwhelmed even when I am automating some aspects that I don't want to control directly?

I never finished a single game and sometimes playing in maximum number of planets is too much and minimum is too little. Any advice to help me find game setup that is manageable? My other problem is how should I group fleets and ensure I have enough guarding a sector? Lastly, I feel that the universe is empty without the storylines and at the same time afraid when the Shakturi will be coming (never seen them yet). What setting is advisable for me?

What overwhelms you? The default settings should not be too bad?

If you find large galaxies tricky and got Legends, try a smaller galaxy. Maybe the shakturi story should be dropped? That would reduce the scale a bit, and allow you to get used to various things.

It is hard to have a watertight defense unless you got very early warning of attacks, and the number of attacks during war makes it hard to not miss things.

The thing that overwhelms me is that later in the game I don't know what to prioritise in terms of what to build where, I am unclear about how many components to put in what I build other than lets say weapons which I could experiment how many I could place.

I played Europa Universalis and had trouble with getting overwhelmed by attacks especially during war time but the problem with DW is that its in space and an enemy could basically attack you from anywhere so I need advice about defense placements and how I should group my defenders.

Having play EU, you should be ahead of the curve with DW. It is in the same vain with the "Pauseable Real-Time Strategy" game. I find it most manageable when I DON'T AUTOMATE. Well, except for some escorts, I have everything manual. I make sure I get every message about ships being built, ships being attacked, Tech research complete, etc. I pause any time a need to. I play it almost like a Turn Based game. There is one thing GOOD about micromanagement. You are very seldom unaware of what is going on.

Same problem I had with EU3, I kind of lose control when my empire grows bigger and I don't know which improvements and where to build them similar to my situation in DW. The other thing that used to disturbed me is handling established empire compared to starting from scratch. In this game you still have a pre-established empire and some mining bases already and not like other 4x where you really start from a single colony ship to a huge empire.

Other than that I don't know which to prioritise when it comes to resources other than the obvious caslon, steel and polymer or the ones that gives you racial bonuses. How resource affects me is pretty unclear other than manufacturing requirements or extra income. I could not see the impact that resources are doing in this game compared to other resource oriented games.

Resources are about strategics for building, and luxuries to have high colony development.

Shortages can cripple your construction potential, and each colony need 10 different luxuries for max development level.

What you should do is pick a few planets that are important to you, preferably close together, and fortify it. Holding on to everything cost you money in keeping up your fleet strength instead of research and infantructors.

Dependent on the size of my empire I station a decent sized fleet on each edge of space that neighbours another empire.

I assign them a hotkey based on their position left to right or top to bottom (dependent on my own position).

That way I have sufficient coverage to defence and counter-attack, or worse case scenario if one fleet is overwhelmed they can hold off the attack until another fleet arrives to support.

That tactic puts me in good shape for most of the game and helps reduce complexity when the proverbial hits the fan.

EU3 isn't that bad once you learn the basics - in fact none of the Paradox games are. It's all about the initial learning curve (which admittedly can be rough - especially in Vicky and HOI)

That being said - I managed to jump almost right into DW being a semi-veteran Paradox player. It helps to automate things like fleets and construction - take over as you learn the gist of things and slowly turn off automation.

That is the beauty of Pdox games because if you are familiar with one, you only have to consider the mechanics in the other games.

Anyway I saw Das24680's preview and I think I should try to play a pirate empire to get the grasp of the basics of the game. Pirates don't have many mines going around and you really have to build stuff from the ground up.I also have to keep an eye on money and resources and I can't just build a ship because I feel like building one without placing my resources in to consideration. I rarely worry about the resources in this game and I think I will try to play a very small map I guess

Hmmm,

you know what? You would be better off with the "Let's micromanage Distant Worlds" series from Larry Monte - http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzEZx9zuF9_4YE6SjyawMFYE-WOQkKSEF. In there you will truly learn the basics (and advanced techniques) of Distant Worlds, as Larry automates only minimum stuff. Even while watching I immediately spotted some places where I would automate myself and not bother micromanaging, but his approach teaches you the micro stuff and thus you know what to find where and how things work.

You do not have to watch the whole series, say 10-15 videos should be enough (I am at 10 currently :)). Then you can watch Das24680's earlier Let's plays for Return of the Shakturi and Legends, he also has many basic and advanced techniques covered and is a good explainer in what he is doing.

I must admint I watched them the other way around (now with the Micromanage videos), but that does not hurt I guess. And, I learned many many things myself from them.

All in all, try not to overextend just for the sake of overextending, but rather focus on the key colonies and your "core". Do Diplomacy, make friends, attack enemies and pirates, upgrade your ships when necessary, try to go for techs that allow you to "see" around you and such...

I think its partly my fault thinking that i should approach this game with Shakturi mentally where I would be rushing to kill everyone but I guess I should apply the patience that I have with Pdox games then. I should make friends and trade and all that and diplomacy is not something I am good at. I am pretty reclusive in most 4x games and I only did tech brokering following getdaved's strategy in Gal Civ 2.

Anyway thanks for that suggestion since I haven't found any decent videos other than Das24680's LPs and I know he explain most stuff but I think I would be better off with someone microing most stuff in this game to really see what is going on.

I agree. Larry's videos should provide a steady pacing in contrast do Das's ones - Larry takes his time with development and expansion (partially of course due to micromanaging stuff) and his diplomacy also is not as heavy.

Easiest. This has happened in every game I played: Win before you need to fight them. In the 10-20 games I have played with Shakturi story line, they have only showed up twice before I won the game, and in both cases I won before they actually revealed themselves as Shakturi. I only know what they are from reading forum.

Why play to win? Play to let the Shakturi Develop, then defeat them. Or to some other objective.

I should play the game that way then. Sometimes I forget that I should just play and stop to smell the roses and just enjoy the game.

Hey Bingeling, are you the guy who does those text-only AARs? If so keep it up, I think I read your Ikkuro AAR of shadows and text-based AARs really help time pass on the bus or train station. Thanks for that and keep it up

Have you tried something in between? It might be just right...

I am trying to look for the sweet spot for grids and systems. I kind of learn some things watching that lets micromanage series. I haven't thought about the way he set the game where he got a few stars in a huge grid to simulate how systems are far away from eachother. I will see how things go once shadows turn up though.
