I just finish playing Courland Pocket 44, for the second time today. The first time I played it was on normal difficulty against the soviet AI and I won very easily. The second time I played the scenario was on challenging difficulty against the soviet AI and won a minor victory by just pressing the end turn button...Yes...that's right... all I did was press the end turn button. I did not move, attack, or did anything but press the end turn button.
This scenario is clearly made for multiplayer and only multiplayer. Again single players get the shaft. I think I am going to stop getting these games for now on it just a waste of time and money. I sure hope the rest of Lost Battles scenarios are not like this last one I just played.

The AI has some real problems dealing with the specific situation in the Courland Pocket 44 scenario.

It does a much better job in the other scenarios and will kick your butt in a few of them pretty easily.

Looks like he was playing as "an Axis player against AI", since he keeps writing about playing "against the soviet AI".

Hi EisenHammer,

That's probably the most unusual scenario for the AI out of the whole set. I'd recommend turning it up to Hard.

I think you'll find that the AI does well with the other Lost Battles.

Regards,

- Erk

I did a quick press the end turn test on hard difficulty against the soviet AI. And every signal German unit on the map was destroyed before the game ended which cause the game to crash. lol

I am going to give this scenario another try on hard difficulty and see if I can survive.

Honestly, I think the only way the game is playable these days without a pile of house rules is vs the AI.

A victim, finally! I am begging for ages to play through the Road to series... NOW you seem to be perfect to be my PBEM opponent. What do you say, Kamerad Eisenhammer?

I won a major victory on hard. I think the soviet AI needs another clear turn at the start of the game to give them a chance to form the pocket. The mud on the second turn slows the AI down to soon at the start of the game. I would like to see a separate scenario for multiplayer and single player. Making a scenario for all in one multi/single player is not working. I also think there should be three grand campaigns, a German single player campaign, a Russian single player campaign, and what we have now a multiplayer campaign.

I realize this thread is ancient, but as an experiment I actually played both the Soviet and German sides in the Courland 44 scenario. It's simply impossible to do as well as the Soviets did historically. I am wondering how much this was playtested? Either the OB is wrong or perhaps the week-long turns aren't sufficiently granular to depict the actual number of clear days the Soviets had at the beginning of the offensive. With one more turn of clear weather, I feel the Soviets could get the job done in terms of matching their historical performance.

This is the problem, I suppose, with having a Strategic engine trying to cope with a firmly Operational Scenario (perhaps even Grand Tactical where all the action is in the Western part of the map).

This isn't the first or last time I've wished for 3-4 day turns (like they have in the OCS series of boardgames). It just seems to work better for this era of warfare, given the mobility of the units involved.

IIRC, the last time I played this it was possible to cut off Courland on the first turn. That's the key. As for your other question about changing the weather, there is no way to alter the weather table, so the only thing you can do is change the starting date to get another clear turn. The weather table can be edited in WitW.

Ok, that sounds like a reasonable work-around. I'll make another try at reaching the coast (as the Soviets were able to do historically) before drawing final conclusions. Thus far, I've been unable to determine exactly how many days of good weather they had in which to get this done, but I suspect it was more than the 7 days they get in the scenario.

The problem is that, while it's possible to reach the Baltic coast, it leaves the Soviets horribly overextended. They then get many of their precious mobile units (Tank/Mech Corps) chopped to pieces in the ensuing counterattack.

The only way to prevent this is to stop well short of what the Soviets historically accomplished, which is just as unsatisfying. The AI isn't smart enough to realize this, goes all out and subsequently will then lose almost all of their mobile units on Turn 2 as the mud leaves those overextended thrusts isolated and vulnerable to counterattack.

I will change the start date as you suggest and see if historical verisimilitude is restored. What I'm afraid of is that it will be too many clear days and the Soviets will become unstoppable. I suppose this is one of the problems associated with week-long turns - which is just a little too long IMHO for a scenario with only operational scope.
