The other two CVE's are wrecked but can make Butuan save a sub or air attack. It turns out they didn't even join the transports carrying 8th Aus Div. It was a serious FUBAR. I blame the staff.

I don't know. I just don't see it. This is the most flattering picture I could find. It just doesn't say "babe magnet" to me.

Editor's Note: It should be noted that Mr. Wilkie ran against FDR in 1940, not 1944. This particular poster does this kind of thing all the time so we implore readers to seek other sources for historical information. Also, we are unable to confirm that Madame Chiang had a bustier or these scurrilous rumors about Chiang Kai-shek.

It's OK. In WWII(c) it is entirely possible that speculative journalism became accepted well before the 21st century. All this fact checking is just impossible without the totally accurate internet in the 1940s ...

Batan Is.: JJ sends some unspotted DD's to raid shipping at Batanes. No less than Arleigh Burke (the naval officer not the DDG)is waiting. We have no torps due a to previous fight but do have full magazines (including a nice supply of National Geographic with pictures of bare-breasted native women aboard LaVallette...Oooh La La..sadly, some of the pages are stuck together). Fighting starts at 7000 yds. We lose on gun hits but don't get Rong Ranced and the transports are protected.

Night Time Surface Combat, near Batan Island at 85,70, Range 7,000 Yards

DD Carmick, Shell hits 1
DD Clark, Shell hits 5, heavy fires

Rearry, rearry annoying night raid by 6 rousy Herens breaks a bunch of C-47's with the new enamel ash trays. We should start doing this too....oh...wait...never mind.

Night Air attack on Batan Island , at 85,70

Don't know where Calayan is? Neither did I. It's NOT Cagayan and it's NOT Calapan. It's Calayan 80 mi. west of Batan Is. These were the poor lads of USMC 2nd Def Bn headed for Batan Is. Some idiot staff flunkie paired a Large Slow Target with LCI's. The LCI's would have made Batan Is. Instead, we get to find out what JJ has at Takao. Some Spits from Batanes try to cover. One LCI survives and maybe 50-70% of the men of 2nd Def Bn but the 155's go in the drink. Bloody annoying as this was preventable.

Lingayen: The weather clears and the air attacks go in this turn. As usual, the fit hits the shan. TBF's from Batanges arrive first without their dedicated escort or the LRCAP of Corsairs from Vigan. WJD CAP is likely from San Fernando but Lingayen airstrip is still operational. Poor bastards. I hope the pilots are OK. We don't have any reserve of trained torpedo-skilled pilots. The 20 P-40K's that were supposed to escort are still having coffee in Batangas.

Morning Air attack on 54th/C Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 17 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 7
Ki-61-Ia Tony x 11

Allied aircraft
TBF-1 Avenger x 10

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
TBF-1 Avenger: 4 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x TBF-1 Avenger bombing from 15000 feet
Ground Attack: 2 x 500 lb GP Bomb

Waste of SBD's which get slaughtered even the though the LRCAP of Corsairs shows up. A staff flunkie told us the SBD's would level bomb at 15K feet. Dumb ass. Don't believe everything you read on mimeographed intelligence briefings.

Morning Air attack on 28th Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 19 NM, estimated altitude 20,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 7 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 6
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 7
Ki-61-Ia Tony x 11

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 18
SBD-3 Dauntless x 9

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed
Ki-61-Ia Tony: 2 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F4U-1 Corsair: 1 destroyed
SBD-3 Dauntless: 5 destroyed

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x SBD-3 Dauntless releasing from 3000'
Ground Attack: 1 x 1000 lb GP Bomb

And more. These chaps were supposed to have 23 P-39D's as escorts. We have no SBD inventory.

Morning Air attack on Sasebo 7th SNLF, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 12 NM, estimated altitude 19,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 4 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 5
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 3
Ki-61-Ia Tony x 4

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 14
SBD-3 Dauntless x 9

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
SBD-3 Dauntless: 2 destroyed, 1 damaged

More TBF's become lamb shanks. This is why one doesn't normally do this but the words "maximum effort" were on the order. We finally take out a dreaded "knee mortar". That should stop them, eh?

Morning Air attack on Sasebo 7th SNLF, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 20 NM, estimated altitude 18,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 3
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 2
Ki-61-Ia Tony x 1

Allied aircraft
F4U-1 Corsair x 14
TBF-1 Avenger x 16

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
TBF-1 Avenger: 2 destroyed, 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
12 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)

Finally, a nicely coordinated raid by RAAF from Batangas. WJD CAP finally had to go back for bullets and gas. Good news, the two big WJD infantry units are still at Lingayen. The sacrifices of the USMC and USN squadron pay off

Morning Air attack on 54th/C Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 18 NM, estimated altitude 6,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 5 minutes

Beaufort VIII x 8
B-26 Marauder x 5
P-40B Warhawk x 1

No Japanese losses

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
72 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled

B-25's from Naga with the proper escort plus some confused Beauforts from Batangas.

Morning Air attack on 54th/C Division, at 79,75 (Lingayen)

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 10 NM, estimated altitude 5,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 3 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufort VIII x 9
B-25C Mitchell x 10
P-40K Warhawk x 18

Allied aircraft losses
B-25C Mitchell: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
77 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 6 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

What follows are 127 sorties of medium and heavy bombers from San Jose, Naga and Cagayan inflicting about 700 casualties/disablements with very few losses (just one B-25, a couple of P40's and 3-4 FAA Albacores who got excited after watching a Noel Coward film and decided to attack.

Then, the 300 Spartans landed at Thermopylae to slow down the Immortals.

Ground combat at Lingayen (79,75)

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 15318 troops, 175 guns, 10 vehicles, Assault Value = 429

Defending force 133 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 7

Assaulting units:
28th Division
54th/C Division
Sasebo 7th SNLF

Defending units:
1st Marine Raider Bn /1

Went to my brother's mother-in-law's funeral yesterday. Wonderful, very generous woman. Hundreds of people there. Her waitress from Coco's was there. I'm not kidding. She gave very, very generously to two churches, a Catholic Church and a Greek Orthodox Church her husband had supported. They both send the A-team.

We are talking robe-o-megaly. I think they were trying to outdo each other. The Catholics send a Monsignor....I haven't exactly worked out what a Monsignor is but they definitely outrank a parish Priest....anyway, not to be outdone, the Greek Orthodox send a highly respected Golden Glove winner...and then the Catholics counter with a two-time Cy Young winner from the pre-steroid era...and then...the Greek Orthodox bring in the Greek Orthodox equivalent of Stan Musial from out of retirement...whoa!...that's really throwing down the amaranth galero...so the Catholics hold a confab the day before the funeral and they decide to send in the BISHOP at the last second!

It's brilliant! An SR-71 could not make it from Constantinople in time for the funeral! The Bishop will be in command!

So, anyway, my sister-in-law is going to say some words about her mom during the ceremony and she has to thank all the dignitaries by ascending rank. She has to wing it a bit because of the sudden changes, she's nervous, she's emotional, of course...but she is doing great and then she gets to the thanking the Bishop so she says..."and we would especially like to thank the..Pope for coming".

Nobody is offended, in fact, nobody can stop laughing. Even the guys in the robes are giggling, especially the Bishop who just went from Lt. General to Field Marshall. Most enjoyable mass I have ever attended. That is perhaps a shallow pond but still. Very memorable.

Burma. LYB position at Prome still very strong. Looks like there must be an entire tank division at Mandaray (363 Ronsons).

I don't think a frontal assault across the Irrawaddy at Prome will work. Maybe when 18th Div gets across upriver it will unhinge the WJD position. Or maybe we can cross on the funicular bridge to the South? They will see that coming, of course, as it would take 2 weeks of marching.

Perhaps 28th Motorised Brig just landed at Ramree can make better time?

Burma: Vengeance drivers over Shwebo get ambushed by Tojos and the like. It is said to be Guard's Armored Div down there but I wonder if it just a unit fragment considering all the tanks at Mandaray?

Morning Air attack on Guards Tank Division, at 59,45 (Shwebo)

Weather in hex: Thunderstorms

Raid spotted at 16 NM, estimated altitude 26,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 6 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 3
Ki-44-IIa Tojo x 18

Allied aircraft
Vengeance I x 16

No Japanese losses

Allied aircraft losses
Vengeance I: 3 destroyed

And then twice more with at least 12 Vengeance downed.

Walking by TV yesterday, my wife had CNN on and it showed the Royal Obstetricians walking out the doors of the hospital to applause and waving...

From 15 yrs as an Empty Minded Twit (EMT), I had concluded from my studies and keen observations that babies basically delivered themselves...

Now we are making rock stars of the Doc's? Waiting for comments from them? OMG! a BABY! its a Royal!! Third in line!!!

I'm mean congrats to mom n dad, but didn't they already have backups in the Royal lineage? Prince Harry? etc?

Sorry I'll go back to posting pics of hot girls at (hopefully) appropriate times...
