Sorry for the lack of updates guys. Really short on time and Erik has started returning turns more routinely. We reached the last of September! Two major OPS are in motion. Update coming tonight. I hate lagging behind in the AAR as it easy to forget a lot of stuff.

25th-29th September -44
______________________________________________________________________________

Lots of good news for the allies the last few turns! Its been really confusing though as we suffered some major sync problems. Luckily Erik has started uploading the CR lately so it was detected.

------------------------
Mindanao
------------------------
Erik has stationed around 100 fighters at Naga. I decided to test this out and sent in some fresh Hellcats on a sweep. Eriks air force still has some bite left and I achieved only a 1:1,5 advantage. Right now with the Navy pools low I can´t afford that. So I´ll let him be for a while.

The really good news came on the ground on the 25th.

quote:

Ground combat at Cagayan (79,89)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 46986 troops, 829 guns, 1974 vehicles, Assault Value = 1821

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 1

Allied adjusted assault: 971

Japanese adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 971 to 1 (fort level 1)

Allied forces CAPTURE Cagayan !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+)

Japanese ground losses:
Units destroyed 1

Erik pulled out with everything. This will turn out to be a mistake in the coming days. My armor immediately gave chase and caught up with him at Malaybalay three days after on the 28th.

quote:

Ground combat at Malaybalay (80,90)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 9752 troops, 285 guns, 1163 vehicles, Assault Value = 1212

Defending force 17229 troops, 218 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 163

Allied adjusted assault: 376

Japanese adjusted defense: 169

Allied assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Malaybalay !!!

This force is pretty much spent. The retreated towards Davao and now sits there. It will take my forces a long time to catch up so for now I just closed the AF to prevent him from flying stuff in or out.

I also managed to secure the easternmost base that I really wanted for the future advance. I have to be really careful though as I´m very close to activating Kamis right now. I don´t want that just yet. With two other major OPS going on right now Mindanao winds down to mopping up and expanding for a week or two.

------------------------
KB
------------------------
Was last seen refueling at Miri and then withdrew west. I know Erik is going to try and repeat his success at the Celebes sea. He can´t get in there without being detected though. He made real good care that I should see him head west which probably mean he is going east. I´m guessing he will try and come around the PI on the eastern side. It might work but I don´t really have much moving in the area though. I posted a few subs so that I might get a warning.

Another possibility is that he will try and raid the IO. Whatever burns his fuel makes me happy. I want him to move around with the KB. I think his fuel will become scarce soon!

------------------------
Strategic Bombing
------------------------
After the fires died down at Palembang almost 100 oil has burned down. Another 100 is also bombed at Miri. But to be really effective I need a level 9 AF within normal B29 range. Erik has kindly provided this at Balikpapan. But that will have to wait.

------------------------
Yap
------------------------
Finally fell after two more attacks!

quote:

Ground combat at Yap (96,97)

Attacking force 6318 troops, 92 guns, 513 vehicles, Assault Value = 395

Defending force 2315 troops, 27 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 32

As I said I have two major operations in the works right now. I´ll do an update on it later tonight and hopefully get some screens up!

Strategic bombing campaign
______________________________________________________________________________

Since coming into range of major Japanese oilfields of Medan, Palembang, Soerabaja, Miri, Tarakan and Balikpapan I have knocked out circa 550 oil points. Earlier I have knocked out all the oil in China.

At what point will this start to become a problem for him? Or is it already?

Allied fleet movements
______________________________________________________________________________

During the last week the allied fleet set sail to take advantage of having the KB out of position in the South China sea. After assembling at Sarmi and replenishing after supporting the Jap landings the fleet set sail with 200.000 troops onboard. Target: Marianas

------------------------
Marianas
------------------------
This operation will be threefold. First we will land supply, engineers and BFs on Tinian. I expect the base to be operational after 2-3 days. In the same time we will invade Saipan. Erik has invested heavily in both Saipan and Guam but intel reveals no IDs so far. Thirdly, with Tinian operational and troops on Saipan the fleet will lift the combat troops on Tinian and land them on Guam together with 2 additional IDs and more tanks.

The fleet is also being reinforced by Ticonderoga, Hancock and Yggdrasil together with 14 CVEs.

Despite having 21 units and 45.000 troops on Saipan I have high hopes we can wrap it up fairly quickly. I have 120.000 men landing including 3 US army IDs and 2 USMC IDs. I also have a 6th ID as reserve if needed. Guam may be a bit tougher as I have less troops for it But if I can get Saipan quickly that would give me two operational airfields in the Marianas and that would mean game over for Erik in the area. I have 300 fighters at Wake ready to jump in a soon as an airfield gets operational.

I have to watch my strikes though as Erik has shown no reluctance to exploit the automated strike routines. So he will probably keep some small ships at each base under a massive CAP. I will have to be wary of that. In fact he did this just a week ago at Truk costing me 100 planes for no Jap losses when a lone xAK suddenly appeared in the harbour from thin air.

He can still fly troops out of Davao by Mavis/Emily, which don't need an AF.

Good luck with the Saipan invasion. I hope you have enough BBs/CAs to reduce/soak up the coastal defences!

Thanks guys!

Question
I have 8 BBs with me. 2 is embedded in each Amphib TF (2 of them) and 4 is in a separate Bombardment TF. Would I be better off embedding 4 in each Amphib instead and skip the naval bombardment? I´m leaning towards the latter to give the troops and assault ships the best possible survivability.

I'd personally have some in bombardment TF's as, with spotters, they'll disrupt the enemy and assist with the landings and survivability that way.

Marine squadron resize
______________________________________________________________________________

While having the 18 plane squadrons resize to 24 doesn´t seem like a massive deal. It is! This will seriously change the USMC from a very good offensive weapon to a formidable one.

Unfortunately I´m so short on Navy/Marine planes I´m nowhere near being able to fill them all out. Ríght now I have zero Corsairs of any kind in the pools. I´ve filled out some select elite squadrons 24. The others will have to do with 18 planes for now. Gotta love being the allies with its superior production!

Erik will get a first taste of this "new" USMC very shortly!

30th September-1st October -44
______________________________________________________________________________

A few quiet turns.

------------------------
Mindanao
------------------------
No action. A few smaller convoys arrive at Cotabato. Some troops and supply are dropped off at Jolo and surrounding islands. BFs start arriving at Cotabato and Surigao.

------------------------
Burma
------------------------
I tried to bomb Eriks superstack (250.000 troops) but even at 15.000 ft it was so vicious I had to switch to other targets. Right now I´m attacking airfields and ports. I´m amazed and shocked Erik can supply his troops. I have almost drained India to supply my troops in Burma. In the last 6 months I have pumped in over 2 million supply and I´m still in the red in some bases. Right now Rangoon is in the red so offensive air OPS are halted. How the heck he can supply his superstack is beyond me. But hopefully the bombings will make it harder for him.

------------------------
DEI
------------------------
I can´t get to his CAs/BBs right now. His air ASW is costing me about 2 subs per turn. I have to approach this differently. I´ll take away his ability to LRCAP instead of striking at the ships directly. Without LRCAP he will have to pull them out anyway. I moved in 3 elite squadrons of Marines and 150 P38s. Erik has 200 Fighters placed on two bases. I´ll deal with the smallest one first with the P38s forcing him to bunch up. I´ll then strike with the Corsairs.

------------------------
Marianas
------------------------
Fleet are now in position. BFs and supply will unload tomorrow. The will be LRCAPed by about 200 Hellcats. I also tried to jump in some P47s hoping enough supply will be unloaded during the night that they can take off in the AM phase. If so Erik sweeps are toast! 125 P47s can ruin any Jap day!

I stood down all strike missions from the fleet this turn so I don´t have to lessen the CAP over the fleet to provide LRCAP. I should still have some 600 planes on CAP next turn. Its a calculated risk but Erik would have had to go at full speed to get here with the KB.

And then this. Seriously? This is so silly its beyond silliness. Is the code broken or something or did someone decide that Jap subs were such a decisive weapon against US CVs that they have a 500% bonus on CVs?!

quote:

Sub attack near Tinian at 108,95

Japanese Ships
SS I-16, hits 8, heavy damage

Allied Ships
CV Yggdrasil, Torpedo hits 1
BB Prince of Wales
DD Isherwood
DD De Haven II
DD Monssen II

SS I-16 launches 8 torpedoes at CV Yggdrasil
DD De Haven II fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Monssen II attacking submerged sub ....
Debris floats to surface in area of attack!
Escort abandons search for sub

Usually this means 3 months in the yard. But this time I´m lucky and despite saying "severe flooding" Yggdrasil suffers only 7 SYS, 3 FLT, 3 ENG.

I have "only" 120 Avengers on ASW and 30 more on Night search. And 6 ASW TFs in the same hex. This is ridiculous.

Re supply in India, you should be getting millions of points dumped in Aden in dissolving convoys by now, or very soon. Look at your queues. Stick 75 xAKs on CS convoys from Aden to Karachi and India will fatten up quickly.

Yep, they have been coming for quite some time. I diverted the convoys going to OZ about 3 months ago but I´m still in a slow decline. I have absolutely NO idea how Erik can sustain his troops if I´m struggling with it. Admittedly he doesn´t have a bomber force operating in the region.

Yep. At least right now when I have subs under his air umbrella. Normally I stopped having them there as its impossible to sustain losses. I have lost about 120 subs in this game. I would say 85% of them to ASW air. I´m all for Japan having some leeway to move outside the historical boundaries but having one of the most decisive allied weapons in the war completely neutered feels a bit...wrong.

In return I´m not too sympathetic towards my opponents objections against the effectiveness of my strategic night bombing campaign...

Hey guys.

Proper update coming tomorrow. I´ve intentionally held it off since I get one of those rare baby and girlfriend free days tomorrow. So I intend to sit by the computer with the blinds closed all day. Perhaps I´ll have some beer and pizza too!

After a bit of jostling I ordered the invasion to move in tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

2nd-4th October -44
______________________________________________________________________________

Again a lot of action erupts around the map. This coupled with the Saipan invasion make another dent in Japanese airpower. I´ll post a separate update on the Saipan invasion shortly.

Operation Fenrir is also a go! A disaster or a coup de grace?

------------------------
Mindanao
------------------------
I decide on the 2nd to try for Eriks fighters at Naga but this time using P38s. Results are not encouraging and I actually lose more then I shoot down. Not a good way to go about it. But shame on the quitter. On the 4th a general air offensive is launch and new more powerful sweeps go in over Naga using P47s and P51s. This achieves much better results...

Just as BBfanboy predicted Erik immediately started flying out troops from Davao. This is such a silly "feature" of the game. Its just impossible to surround and cut forces off. In a vain attempt to stop this I set 250 Fighters on LRCAP just 1 hex away. I predict 2 transports shot down and 5 lost to OPS... and no lessing on troops getting out.

I´m about to get ready and finish off Jolo. Bombers have assisted here as much as possible. I hope to get some results next turn. I have a OZ BDE ready to reinforce if needed. A OZ Combat Engineer unit (48AV) have already been dropped off on the island.

------------------------
Burma
------------------------
Supply finally arrived at Rangoon enabling air OPS again. This marks the start of Operation Fenrir. Lets start abusing the silly air transport system. Silly!

------------------------
DEI
------------------------
Erik has been keeping his SCTFs in the shallow base hex of Lomblen. No doubt packed with ASW TFs. I can´t really get to him there so I tried something different. I airdropped a crapload of mines via B29 drop and simultaneously dropped 300 mines via subs. Didn´t seem to work as no hits were heard. I also lost two more subs in the OP. Crap.

I did start eating away at his LRCAP as part of the general air offensive ordered on the 4th. We did good here taking out a chunk of his LRCAP using the USMC Corsairs. Got to love those guys! P38s go in again tomorrow but I have kind of lost faith in the P38 as an offensive weapon. But perhaps we can get equal results at least.

------------------------
Small disaster at Milne Bay
------------------------
Erik again jumped in strike planes at Rabaul. This time I had taken good care to get a good sized CAP up buuuut...when loading troops from Milne Bay I forgot to turn on "load troops only" so the TF drained all supply from the base. This of course happened the same turn Erik flew in his strike planes. They of course took off after the same TF that drained the supply. 6 AKs are lost!

Saipain Invasion D+1
______________________________________________________________________________

Here is a screen of the first day. The Tinian part of the Invasion has already landed some supply and BFs. Airstrip was actually operational the day before. 125 P47s are on high altitude CAP while the CV fleet provides low CAP.

No strikes flew neither against Tinian nor the Fleet on this day.

Saipain Invasion D+2
______________________________________________________________________________

Here is a screen of the second day. More action this turn!

During the night several small MTBs penetrate the screen at Tinian and interrupts the unloading. One MTB even gets past to the CVs... The enemy subs also claims their first victims as a Cargo TF ignores all setting and withdraws towards Manaus? WTH? Luckily no troops are onboard but two xAKs are lost.

When day breaks Erik sent off sweeps against Tinian. They got absolutely skewered on the quite impressive CAP. uncertain if enough supply would unload for a full CAP I kept the LRCAP from the CV fleet up.

quote:

Morning Air attack on Tinian , at 108,94

Weather in hex: Moderate rain

Raid detected at 41 NM, estimated altitude 24,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 12 minutes WTH? Have ground radar stopped working in the BETA?

Japanese aircraft
J2M3 Jack x 31

Allied aircraft
P-47D25 Thunderbolt x 110
F6F-3 Hellcat x 70
F6F-5 Hellcat x 25

Japanese aircraft losses
J2M3 Jack: 11 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F6F-3 Hellcat: 2 destroyed
F6F-5 Hellcat: 1 destroyed

There are also many Frank sweeps that doesn´t fare very well. Our first offensive mission is also flown as a Sweep/LRCAP mission is flown against Saipan. They do extremely well!

quote:

Morning Air attack on Saipan , at 108,93

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid detected at 26 NM, estimated altitude 36,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
J2M3 Jack x 42
N1K2-J George x 14
Ki-43-IIIa Oscar x 27
Ki-102b Randy x 10

Allied aircraft
F4U-1A Corsair x 39
F6F-3 Hellcat x 62

Japanese aircraft losses
J2M3 Jack: 10 destroyed
N1K2-J George: 6 destroyed
Ki-43-IIIa Oscar: 7 destroyed
Ki-102b Randy: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
F6F-3 Hellcat: 3 destroyed

Now the stage is set for the actual invasion. Just before I end the turn I decide to embed more BBs in the invasion TFs. This turns out to be extremely fortunate. I can´t remember who it was but thank you for reminding me about the Naval fortress on Saipan!

Saipain Invasion D+3
______________________________________________________________________________

Day of the landing!

During the night several Jap subs interact with the various TFs. As seen in the screenshot I´m relying a lot on movement as Allied ASW seems absolutely toothless when it comes to protecting CVs. Three Jap subs are almost certainly sunk during the night for the cost of a xAP unloading at Tinian.

The first wave is approaching the shores after a very ineffectual bombardment. I am extremely glad put more BBs on protecting the landing!!!

After this it seems the opposition lessened a bit. The BBs did their job and everything unloaded in very good order! The BBs are in no danger at all with 5-15 SYS damage and some knocked out AA guns. This will of course require some time in the yard but since this was only a stop for the Fleet on the way to Pearl for Upgrades we don´t lose much time in the Combat Zone.

The automated Jap counter bombardment reveal Erik true to his habit continues to rely on small combat units without much staying power. I´m going to risk Murphy here by predicting this will be pretty short work!

I have another USMC Division (5th) is sitting on Tinian with 48 prep. I decided not to land them yesterday. They are ready if needed. Tomorrow the first attack goes in. With the HQ bonus and over twice the raw AV I don´t think Erik will hold here very long. With a division or two things would certainly be different but Erik has not changed his ways. I don´t know if he is still stuck on looking at AV alone or if he simply don´t have the IDs to spare.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

The Fleet will start to retire a bit towards Wake. I think LBA can handle its own now. The BBs will remain at Tinian to soak more hits on Guam before retiring.

Some offensive sweep are ordered over Guam and Rota by CV planes to allow the LBA at Tinian to rest fatigue a bit. Some of the CVE groups will fly off their CVEs and take station on Tinian and hopefully soon Saipan.

Nice landing on Saipan. Those CD guns there are nasty.

Thanks Lokasenna!

Here is a screen of the opposition. While they are a bit more robust than I anticipated I doubt they have much staying power. Looks like AT guns are in short supply and they seem very light on guns. So basically I don´t think they have much firepower.

Here are some of the involved allied units currently on Saipan. The TOE of the USMC Divisions are quite impressive!

194th Tank - Replace leader with better Land skills.
98th Div - Replace leader with better Aggression skills.
Land and Aggression should be greater than 60, if possible. I sort by Inspiration and then look for these two factors.

ASW - Do you have enough that you could try to place one or two TF in each of the 6 hexes surrounding your CVs??

Good catch Michael! I changed the leader of the Tank BTL and ID before the actual attack! The screens are from before that. Thanks to you I´ve now have a habit of checking leaders before every attack!

Not enough ASW to go around for that I´m afraid.

ASW - I'm planning on taking a CVE or two and train up my TBs (Avengers just in ASW skills to try to kill subs (take off the fighters after re-sizing to the max of that CVE and then do same for TBs). I've lost most of my BBs and one CV to them, not Japanese LBA or CVs. Hopefully, around 60 Avengers doing ASW work will prevent the big guys from getting hit.

I actually have a full CVE TF for ASW only. Doesn´t seem to help much though as my CVs get hit regularly anyway My feelings for how the Jap subs are able to operate and strike Allied capital ships are no news to anyone that regularly reads this AAR...

Here is a screen of my CVE TF. All squadrons are resized to 24 planes (Don´t do bigger as the CVEs can only take on 24 torps so if you make them bigger they lose the ability to drop torps all together)

There is usually two CVEs doing night search but guess what...

Now there's irony for you!

Operation Fenrir
______________________________________________________________________________

I´ll detail my thinking a bit more later. Right now I´m going to go vomit a bit and then pour me something REALLY strong.

Basically if this goes haywire I have given away my best Indian division and ALL the Armor and Combat Engineers I have in Burma.

I´m regretting this already.

Crap.

But no Detection Level on them yet... What's your air cover like? It may just work...

You remember that intel I was waiting for? I have been probing his naval search for almost 2 weeks. I still havn´t figured it out. Most of the times it zero detection but then from time to time all the TFs in the area gets slammed with a 10/10. Perhaps he is struggling with supply in the bases so search doesn´t always fly? So finally I just decided to take a chance. I was pretty happy when I saw he still hadn´t spotted them last turn!
