With Turn 5 comes the arrival of the merchant fleet sent from off Alaska to the Caribbean MTB.

This open up new markets to that Russia can trade with.

Here, I begin the long, slow, process to reduce Chinese influence and increase Colonial Penetration.(10% at the moment.). It says Mil Outpost only because that's where the cursor was. Actually, it's Colonial Merchants that was picked.

What's the rationale for Russia (or any other country for that matter) needing automobiles in 1850?

all products are in 1 of 3 categories - food, common or luxury. You need a mix within each to satisfy your population (so if all you have is cereals and cows, even if the volume is ok you will face dissent as the diet isn't varied). Automobiles are a luxury, along with gold, gems, silks, opium and luxury manufactures. In this case the AI has worked out that not all the luxury needs are being met (which is pretty normal) and identified that the gap would be filled not by more of the same (it knows that all the current production + imports are in use) but by accessing something else.

Only problem is its a wee bit early for that particular something else to be available.

Note that the production advice, ie things you ought to build, are reflecting this issue - its suggesting various routes to ensure that your luxury good needs are satisfied.

Yeah, no autos yet. But I suppose I could always use the "Send the troops to suppress local social dissent" Or "Impose Martial Law." But I cut some taxes a couple of points.
