I concur Cavalry. Movement is a major issue. John (JWE/Symon) has done us a major favor in creating the pwhexe for use in the Mod.

Is this the basic design of the flight deck cruiser?

Eddie - This is what the specs are for Charlotte.

John - I think this CVL has too many 6" guns and maybe too many 5" mounts. Maybe have 2 triple 6" up front and then some 5" in rear and right side.

I assume Charlotte is supposed to represent the original 1930 flight deck cruiser concept described by Norman Friedman:

http://books.google.com/books?id=-UT7MDTeKj8C&pg=PA179#v=onepage&q=flight%20deck%20cruiser&f=false

If that is the case, 9 6" and 8 5" guns are what the Navy wanted on it.

Something must be wrong -- a triple 5" mount with as much armor as the 6" turrets, but on one side only?

John figure out the gun mounts when you get a break in your game if you will so I can get them near where they need to be. I've made good progress on the CVL but still much to do.

Sulu, perhaps this will help, if John likes it.

Hi Oldman, whatever John, Micheal and their group decide on I'll try and give them a visual.

Whatever ship I'm working on I build a folder for it. I have the picture you posted in the folder. It's similar to this from a neat Alan Zimm article I stumbled across.

The flight deck looks a little short for operating 1940 ish aircraft so believe the 1939 flight deck length to be more viable.

I had a free morning I didn't expect so made good progress. It's the RA teams art so whatever they want I'll make alterations. No problem.

Damn. LOOKS Great. I'll take it. Can you do both sil and shil?

Gary just sent a whole bunch of stuff on extra art he has been doing. LOTS of nice stuff there as well.

The actual 1930-1931 design has the flightdeck at an angle. First serious look at the angled flightdeck. One wouldn't be able to see it with ship art.

Three 6" triple turrets in front and then those 5" guns. Pretty stout opponent if stumbled onto I bet!

Have added the CVL's USS Chateau Thierry and USS Varennes to the Allied OOB replacing the lost CVLs.

Hi John,

It seems you still have the wrong armor value for the 1st 5in turrent (Wpn3) and the ammo value is also not the same for Wpn 6 compared to other 5in guns.

DUH. I am an idiot. Fixed.

The 5" guns are open just like the 5" on an American CV.

The Algerie was kinda flimsy. They had no tonnage for armour at all.

juts looking a refernce i have says

Cruiser; Algerie

"armour was extensive and totaled 2657 tons as opposed to 1553 tons with the Duplex, inboard of the main belt was an anti-torpedo bulkhead, extending from the bottom to the armoured deck and enclosing the end barbettes, with space between divided into oil fuel and coal bunkers for additional protection"

Further, from Jane's Fighting Ships of World War II:

quote:

Armour:
4 1/3" Vert. Side.
3" Deck
Internal bulges, with hull thickness of 1 1/2"
(Total weight of Armour 2,000 tons.)

Here's from Conway's:

quote:

Authorized in 1930, this vessel was the last and best French 'treaty' cruiser, and one of the most outstanding examples of the type in any navy. A radical departure from the widely criticized 'tin-clad' heavy cruisers, she was built in response to the Italian Zara Class. Armor weight totaled 2657t (compared with 1553t in the preceding Dupleix) and it was better distributed; emphasis was placed on protection against aerial bombs and underwater attach, and extensive torpedo bulkhead being separated from the main belt by old and coal bunkers.

Of course saying that it was the "best 'treaty' cruiser" is maybe not saying a whole lot.
