RE your comments about reinforcing by rail.

In mid-late 1945 the Allies have to perform a mental adjustment. For years, in game and real life, Japan has "railed in troops" to plug holes and meet Allied moves. As the wave grows in the late-war, however, there are fewer and fewer Japanese troops available in Asia. They have been vaporized, perhaps to come back as hollow shells in the HI, but not in Asia. Especially as Chinese troops get supplied and move out very large Japanese formations can be pocketed and liquidated. At some point, and certainly once the Soviets are active, the Allied "problem" isn't opposition so much as distance, speed, and time. Literally any base can be reduced to nothing in a few days once you have the Soviet arty and motor rifle divisions.

It's a change in mind-set. I keep preaching time. It's the Allies' enemy. You don't have as much as you think. Gotta get moving.

In my second PBEM game I activated the Soviet Troops on Turn 800 [I wonder if this is a minimum turn trigger not documented but build in the code?] by attacking China through Southeast Asia - HK -- Korea. Once the Garrison was reduced and turn 800 happened . it was Katy bar the door. I must agree that Soviet troops can engage the IJ effectively on many fronts trapping whatever is left in the pincher movements. I would suspect the war would be over by then.

BTW) If you have been training the Soviet Air force, they suddenly tax the IJ's resources on many fronts. This leaves open opportunities open for the other Allied forces. My game ended before I needed to exploit this

Thanks for the comments guys. I´ll get back to you later.

Just emailed Erik the let him know the game is on hold until I get better. Some very important turns now and I don´t want to do them while exhausted and running a 39 degree fever.

Oh.

You really are sick.

I thought "man flu" was just a Swedish idiom for "hangover."

Take care of yourself.

I actually wish I´m hungover. Hit 39.8 degrees during the night.

In Sweden its common knowledge that once the flu hits a real man it mutates and becomes 124 times worse the the original disease! Hence "man flu"

Sort of back in action. Managed to get the turn done and sent to Erik. Now the waiting begins. My troops are quite exhausted after the march through the jungle and the HQ units and the Chinese Corps is still a day behind. But I decided to take the chance and not wait for them. Eriks Tank div will be the key here. If it gets there by tomorrow I will quite possible skewer myself tomorrow. If not I think I have a 20% chance.

I think this might be the most important turn in the game so far. If I succeed I have cut off 80% of the Japanese unrestricted divisions and the door will be wide open. Its hard not to get the hope up. But Erik has been so incredible lucky so far in Burma and if anyone deserves a break its me.

Keep your fingers crossed guys.

8th November -44
______________________________________________________________________________

The main event is of course the capture of Balikpapan.

------------------------
Borneo
------------------------

I shouldn´t have shocked attacked of course. Learning by doing I guess!

quote:

Ground combat at Balikpapan (64,97)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 19914 troops, 326 guns, 819 vehicles, Assault Value = 769

Defending force 10302 troops, 79 guns, 38 vehicles, Assault Value = 150

Allied adjusted assault: 541

Japanese adjusted defense: 19

Allied assault odds: 28 to 1 (fort level 5)

Allied forces CAPTURE Balikpapan !!!

Japanese aircraft
no flights

Japanese aircraft losses
P1Y1 Frances: 7 destroyed
Ki-67-Ia (T) Peggy: 1 destroyed

Combat modifiers
Defender: forts(+), disruption(-), preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+)

Japanese ground losses:
6967 casualties reported
Squads: 283 destroyed, 12 disabled
Non Combat: 151 destroyed, 33 disabled
Engineers: 92 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 62 (58 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Vehicles lost 34 (33 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Units retreated 9

Allied ground losses:
76 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 20 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 4 (1 destroyed, 3 disabled)
Vehicles lost 31 (4 destroyed, 27 disabled)

My troops will have to rest for a couple of days before heading out for Samarinda. That will be another shock attack across the river. Ah well.

------------------------
Marianas
------------------------
Good bombardment at Guam! These often happen right after I deliberate attack.

quote:

Ground combat at Guam (106,95)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1942 troops, 222 guns, 130 vehicles, Assault Value = 1413

Defending force 22229 troops, 415 guns, 93 vehicles, Assault Value = 208

Japanese ground losses:
221 casualties reported
Squads: 12 destroyed, 4 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Guns lost 4 (2 destroyed, 2 disabled)

I hope the base will fall during the next attack. But my troops needs rest. Lots of it. Two of the IDs are more or less shot with disruption and fatigue over 50. Once the armor recovers I might try an attack with only armor.

------------------------
Mindanao
------------------------

Second attack at Davao goes in. Results are good but my troops will need to rest. Very annoying with the movement bug sending 1 ID and all armor the wrong way.

quote:

Ground combat at Davao (79,91)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 33160 troops, 798 guns, 851 vehicles, Assault Value = 1224

Defending force 12302 troops, 116 guns, 50 vehicles, Assault Value = 190

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Allied adjusted assault: 686

Japanese adjusted defense: 925

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 2)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1522 casualties reported
Squads: 9 destroyed, 98 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 24 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 10 disabled
Vehicles lost 13 (9 destroyed, 4 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
231 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 43 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 17 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 4 disabled

We also accidently closed Naga AF using B29s. No CAP luckily!

------------------------
Kendari
------------------------
Looks like Erik is trying to lift out the stranded Transports. Hopefully I can catch him tomorrow!

Victory Points
______________________________________________________________________________

Digging through tracker to try and find out the fate of the two CAs stuck at Jesselton I made a pleasant discovery. While it does look like the CAs got away (no VPs awarded) I apparently passed Erik in terms of VPs 10 days ago!

I know most allied player are probably ahead by twice the Japanese at this point but I can´t help but feel a little proud. Less than a year ago I was still battling it out at Port Moresby hopelessly left behind. Looking at what I have accomplished in 44 it has simply been a never ending string of allied successes. I found a screen from mid March that quite clearly show just how much has been achieved in only 8 months of time.

One things really stands out besides the almost 30.000 VPs gained in only 8 months:
From the 18th of March to the 8th of November the Japanese have lost 1847 aircraft per month. Thats quite a big number!

We don´t "play for VPs" but rather the enjoyment of the game itself. But its still nice to see I´m making progress.

Do you have an HR prohibiting a landing at a non-base hex?

What? You do? Really?

Should have the replay back from Erik any minute now. Its hard not getting the hopes up. 1 Jap ID + 1 BDE +1 Tank RGT in terrain x2 against 2 OZ, 2 US, 1 Brit and 1 Indian division with Fatigue 20-30 and disruption 5-9.

Its a close call but I think the defensive terrain will tip the balance. I´ll probably get a adjusted AV from 2700 to 400 end Erik go from 700 to 3000. As usual...

Well, looks like I might have jumped the gun a little bit too early. Apparently 1 unit didn´t retreat so Erik is still in full control of the hex. But he will lose it tomorrow. Tank division or not. I still have 3300 AV left that will attack tomorrow!

Can´t tell you how relieved I am. Never in a million years thought I would be able to break through. Now I need to figure out how to exploit this opportunity!

IMO it's a TOE story now and to the end , not an AV story. One ID for you is not the same as one for him. In anti-armor alone you are so far ahead it's not funny. MGs too.

Agreed, thats one of the reasons I don´t think Erik will try with his 2 Tank divisions alone. Besides that my armor is just 4 days away. But for all he know it could arrive tomorrow. And I don´t think he would want to face 400 Shermans even with 2 tank divisions.

Besides there is simply no way he will move 4000 Allied AV. So now he has 4000 AV in front of him and 10000 behind him. Talk about being stuck between a rock and hard place.

But you never know. He might think I got skewered and my troops are really beat up. They arn´t though. Most of the losses happened to the two BDEs. But one OZ division is a bit beat up.

Question is how I play this. I´ll put a map up tonight. First thing on the menu is to cut his supply paths. Then the 4Es will get to work.

Here is a screen of the current situation. I have not yet really decided how I want to play this. The main idea here is to cut supply, try to surround the Japanese forces and then capture them in a nice little pocket.

Exactly how to do this. I´m not sure yet. I guess Erik will either try to break out which I think is near impossible or try to walk east through the jungle. If he does I need to get there before him.

I detatched around 3000 AV in the north to start moving for Raheng. Central Thailand is virtually empty. One one division and some small units there.

I would love to hear some ideas. Don´t want to mess this extraordinary opportunity up.

From my experience N=2 ... Ayutthaya [ayuthia] is the key to breaking into the Thai plains. Using just enough force to pin IJA units at Raheng, and then using enough to take Ayutthaya and Raheng will fall from lack of supply. My two opponents did not initially build up Ayutthaya, so I parachuted a chindit unit and followed up with armor. Once taken I para dropped into empty Udon and railed units from Ayutthaya .. Thailand soon collapsed ...

Things are at the tipping point in Burma ...

What happened to the bats with incendiary bombs strapped to their backs or the cockroachs with 50 cals?

General Joc; great move in the CBI AO. You have proven yourself a very competent leader. Keep up the Good work. Allied civilians.

I would go with sending troops to Rahaeng and cutting the RR off above Bangkok. Box him in then pin him down.
