Even to include the ones that cheat terribly like the Civilization series. What are your choices for games with the best AI? Games that have beat your butt. Games you won't play again because you think the AI is too hard. Also tell the difficulty level you play them on. I always play on the highest difficulty because I want to best challenge I can get. You may give up to 3 choices because we want to see a bunch of great choices. My choice of game with the best AI for me is.

1.1830 Railroads and Robber Barrons (ruthless game on highest difficulty and 5 opponents, they won't float your railroad, they will help each other but not you and just all out azzhats when it comes to blocking you but not others. I find myself screaming at the monitor "why don't you block him (computer ai) and not me all the time you ^%*%&$%#hole.)

2.Civilization II (one of my favorite games with max ai opponents and hardest difficulty I can never even get close to beating it)

3. Spartan (one of the best games ever on highest difficulty, I get attacked from all sides and by at least four factions. The Persians came after me last time and I was playing Crete. Drove me off my island and out of mainland Greece. I did survive but it was one of the best, hardest games I ever played.)

I haven't played the games you mentioned but the best AI for my money is the Command Ops series. The AI in COTA, BTFTB and HTTR (and I suspect when I finally get it Battles in Greece) has always been persistent, sneaky and challenging.

boy i wish i could make a valuable contribution but i think i somehow seem to find most AI's in most games to be a challenge and or at least behave in a way that lets my imagination do the rest. Recently though, I have been continually beaten and ground away by the AI in Wargame AirLandBattle, and also the intermediate level AI in Panzer General Forever. The AI in all the Harpoon games has always seemed good and I forget the name of mission but the one where i have to get subs out to Sea from the somewhere on the northwest US coast always has the Soviet Subs eluding me.
- actually that reminds, oh boy, yes the classic old game Command Aces of the Deep - trying to torpedo an escorted convoy just has never worked for me, the destroyers bear down on me and release their depth charges before i even think of how to respond. The old CGW magazines used to even have ongoing articles about strategy in that game - those articles also gave a good indication of the AI. but again i am no pro and so maybe it was an easy game for others. Sub warfare games can be pretty tough on the whole being that stealth and patience is required.
the Commandos series of games had a pretty good AI too i recall

I'been playing a rail game port called "Empire Builder Pronto" that has a very very good AI. I have beaten the AI players but never won a game outright against them. It's great because it's making me really think about what it takes to win. In that sense I'd say it the best AI by far I've necountered.

I used to enjoy the AI in Empire Deluxe and there is some scripting possibilites for it that I've not tinkered with. Then there was loads of fun with the Age of Empires series AI althoughI always found them beatable in very predictable ways.

COTA has good AI for a wargame, I haven't really played that one too much though.

It's funny you guys should say Command Ops as I have Battles from the Bulge and I just walk all over the ai. Am I missing a difficulty setting or something?

Well , people might be relating "good" with something other than it being difficult to beat. A rather complex subject when you start really drilling into it.

Also AGEOD's Athena engine, although it's WEGO and not real time.

They probably don't actively artillery use, especially for counter-battery fire. Artillery use is a major weak point of the AI.
The AI routinely takes 10x higher gun losses than I and 10x higher bombardment losses.

What would you recommend to change with the artillery then?

I don't want to sound like I'm pumping a game that hasn't been released yet,but during beta testing I found Flashpoint Campaigns AI to be right up there. It will really give you a run for your money.

Hi there Plodder just thinking the same, have just been reading the Mad Russian talk about the new release, sounds good.
The Ai seems to think too, I will be following closely, thinking about a purchase.

The most important difference between my way of playing and the AI's is that I tend to bombard anything that is capable of indirect fire until it stops being a threat. On larger maps, where units are often misidentified I search for enemy units that have "bombarding" status and bombard them too (by the way, if anything has a visible bombarding status and is identified as a non-artillery unit type it should be re-identified as an artillery unit as bombarding is a dead give-away of their type).

Silencing enemy artillery is especially important when attacking because artillery is very effective at disrupting attacks.
Since the enemy artillery doesn't try the same to my artillery, I get free reign at destroying it. In reality, it would probably result in a long artillery duel.

Besides that I tend to use artillery more aggressively against enemy concentrations, depots, important positions, etc. (usually after disposing of enemy artillery).

Also, I'm not afraid of concentrating artillery - for example if I have a fire superiority, I often fire whole regiments of artillery against single artillery battalions. In current AI situation, I also use regimental fires against single battalions even without superiority to annihilate them sequentially, but I think it wouldn't work if the AI would fire back.

Interesting. The AI in Cmd Ops does do counter battery fire but perhaps we need to tweak the probability up a bit.

I've been going over this thread all week trying to find a good answer. AI's a tough call.

When they're tuned up and debugged I'd say AGEOD probably has the best strategic AI. On the right settings it can be engaging and will often exploit your weaknesses pretty well.

The AI in Frank Hunter's civil war game was pretty decent, and I remember the AI in the TOAW series being pretty good too. Then of course there's the AI in Unity of Command which is either totally brilliant or out of its mind, depending on who you ask.

I agree..there can be a huge difference between player casualties and the AI when it comes to Arty.

It would be nice. Right now I'm taking a pause from Cmd Ops because the arty issue is making it way too easy for me.
