I think that units in reserve mode getting a free pass on being able to continue moving in move mode by avoiding getting knocked into combat mode by bombing is a bug that should be reported so it can be fixed.

Not quite as sure about the AA abilities of units in reserve though, it seems to me that reserve status shouldn't be a hindrance to that so what you were seeing there seems reasonable to me. Reserve shouldn't mean they have unmanned and packed their AA guns away like strategic mode should.

It's not a free pass really. In fact according to the manual reserve mode can have some severe drawbacks if other units are in the hex. You don't want to leave all units in reserve if there is the likelihood of an attack on the ground.

I'm not at all sure what should or shouldn't be available to units in a reserve mode. Seems like they should have quick movement, and I can't really see why they should be popped into combat mode simply because they were attacked from the air.

In Reserve to me means ready and waiting to deploy into combat (at this scale) with a one hour alert and in position after 4 hours.

DISAPPEARING Ki-84 FRANK 'b' RESEARCH FACTORIES
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Okay. I have been a bit preoccupied in game lately, but I just did my check on R n D at 12-1-44 and I found something odd. I had two factories researching the Frank 'b' which can be seen from the only screenshot I could find recently, from August, 44. There is one in Osaka and one in Tsu. Suddenly I have none.

Is it possible that they upgraded to the 'r' even though they were not finished researching, and went into production? If that is true, not cool a all. That would mean I basically can't make this plane as I won't be spending 60k supplies to change two factories over.

Am I missing something? Has anyone seen something like this before?

The top part is from August 44. The next part is now. The final piece shows that Frank 'b' research is not fully complete and still a month away from production.

I would guess that they did, as you had "upgrade" to Yes for them. And because their upgrade was in production....it upgraded?

If that is true, that sucks.

Honestly do not know, but it sure looks like that. I'm real OCD with my research. I check it every turn, even when nothing will happen. I have a plan all drawn out for each game ... yadi yadi yadi da ... yeah. complete OCD.

I've been checking maniacally, but in the last month it had been more sporadic due to other things in game needing lots of detail. I just never imagined that a research factory would 'upgrade' out of research into production.

I wanted to try out all of these, but this one may have to be scrapped as the Frank 'r' is more advantageous in this game anyway with our rules and it's higher speed. Too bad though.

At least now I realize why my Ha-45 engines are so maxed out!

Good info. Already switched upgrade option to "no"
Also i suggest to check my AAR to look what happen with my planes pool. It should help avoid disaster with building kamikaze pool for many players.

Yeah, checked that out. I think next turn I'll go through and try to start recycling engines I really need more of like the Ha-33.

I'm also starting to think of Home Island defense. Jocke has had the Marianas for some time now and should be in a position to bomb the HI at any moment. i've begun flying CAP in some cities for the first time ever which is taking away some training groups, so especially for the IJN I'll be relying on some float plane groups for much of my fighter training until the actual training groups show up in a month or two.

I'd like to make more Randys but they are expensive. I just feel that with their higher speed and durability they will do well agains the 4Es, plus they have the centerline cannons. The Randy 'a' can also sweep above 31k with our 2nd best band rule, so that could be useful.

One choice I've made recently is to stop making so many Jakes, and maybe turn them off altogether. I've been really cavalier with them, but never made more than I set out in 42, when factories were expanded to 80/month. Now the area I need to cover and the sub menace are both diminished, plus a number of other group types can take over this role in the Home Island areas and around the main defensive positions. I've been losing way too many as the Allied CAP has gotten stronger. Strangely I lose many fewer Norms in the same areas.

I'm sending almost all Jake groups to the HI to begin training fighter and kami pilots and I'll only keep a few groups out for dot base ASW/search duties. This will free up some of the Ha-33 engines for the Randy line.

27 November 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

BURMA: The day after the worst disaster of the war was pretty quiet. We began moving to the hex from which another Allied unit is entering ours, but after realizing movement was at 2 miles a day (!!) the only real option is to go for the hex as yet unoccupied to the NE. This will put out large force out in the middle of nowhere off road, and the only hope is that Jocke decides to not keep enough around to bottle us in. I may be able to keep these guys in a chase for a while though. I've though even of heading for Moulmein. We'll see.

SUBS: Sea Poacher gets a few hits, but a bunch of other subs are untouched in the South China Sea and we lose an xAK, the Gokoku Maru and an xAKL, the Yamabuki Maru.

DEI: The Aussies take Dili. ow it's a full pull out in the Southern DEI. Lomblen is abandoned for good. java will host a good air base in Soerabaja but all but a few meager ground troops will depart from batavia for Saigon.

Fletchers come forward and take out an LST TF pulling supplies from front line bases. Looks like I've got all I can now.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Some supply comes in allowing bombing of forward Allied positions should he choose to go into the plains of Thailand.

Maybe these ships are over-poered, but they certainly don't dominate, and I lose about a 1:1 ratio of E to subs in this part of the war. They all come in with low experience and poor captains, so to make them 'super' at least some PPs are needed and probably quite a bit of experience. Most don't' last that long with the US subs these days.

The movement executed by units in reserve is exploitation movement pursuing a retreating enemy. If the player is placing units in reserve and then assigning them a destination hex, in order to move them out of the hex, this seems to violate the spirit of what reserve is. It's supposed to be used to hold units back from combat either for the purpose of reinforcing the battle if it is going poorly or for the purpose of exploiting a retreat with follow on movement. Using reserve mode to move to another hex with special immunities seems to me to be an exploitation of the fact that the game engine fails to disable the destination hex choice for units in reserve.

Hi all, sorry for the radio silence. While it's not really vacationing when traveling with 17 HS students, it was a good trip. I managed to do a few turns but didn't have time to get to the reports. I'll catch up in the next few days.

Here is the highlight for me of the few days up there; the northern lights on a level 5 activity night, which meant even with some clouds the action was sporadically intense and lively. One of the most amazing things I've seen.

28 - 30 November 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: The sub war intensifies as the Allies continue to put a dense pattern of fleet subs in the South China sea. A few are hit and damaged, but not severely. We lose an E, an SC and an xAKL. The Allies lose an AM near Borneo.

DEI: Units continue to move out of the Southern region toward Singapore and our main transition base at Saigon. Lots of fragments to reunite and this is where it's usually done. No big Allied moves, but this is giving me time to get most of the units at Koepang and Roti moved back by air. After this the main fleet of Tabbys will move back, around through China, and to the Home Islands. It's time to begin using them to fly units to General defense bases nearby.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: This area is vulnerable now. The Allies are moving armor into the Thai plains and it'll be a quick dash across to try to cut us off if they want it. I'll keep trying to bomb and so far it looks like we're getting decent results (for Japan) in hitting and disabling tanks at least. Probably the best way to do this against tanks I can't hit with much on the ground.

THAILAND: The Allies continue to bomb troops and every few days somehow the AA units get supply and really hit the bombers hard. I'm not sure if this is being allocated from other units or somehow trickling in some other way.

The stack is making slow progress, in combat mode, and will keep heading NE until the option is closed or something else opens up.

CENTRAL PACFIC: A fighter build-up shows something is about to happen in the Marianas. I'm putting fighters on CAP everywhere in the Home Islands and I'll start watching carefully for rises in detection. Bombing could start at any moment. Lots of fleet units that are vulnerable right now in repair yards too.

Emilys continue to fly units out all over the board. The range and size of these planes make them incredibly useful for this, and in spite of updating to the newest beta fixing the LR CAP I have only lost a few in this kind of role. Much more dangerous to fly them on search missions, so I use the FP for search in heavily CAPed Allied controlled areas.

Some good, lots of bad. That's the state of things these days.

SUBS: Well, this wasn't in the plans. The Allies hit Naha with ALL available B-29s and sunk 2/3 of the IJN sub fleet!

Every sub in port was sunk plus the one AG there. Good shooting, huh?

I've been using this base to rotate out spent fighters from Manila and get them up and running again. Jocke picked a good day in between, but honestly 50 fighters wouldn't have stopped 100 B-29s anyway. It's just my bad for leaving these subs too far forward. Hard to get used to the idea that any port is in range. Now things will be harder and air power will be even more paramount.

A few Allied subs take hard hits, but scoring 1-21 isn't going to hold him off.

THAILAND: The good part is that the Allies attack and get mauled in +3 terrain against the remnants of the Burma Army. I'm not even sure how these troops still have supply, but this is very welcome. Makes up a bit on the VP front for losing 200+ for sub losses. The Allies lose a good number of squads outright and 1200+ disabled!!

This won't change a lot, but it should be harder to separate and get more fronts opened with 1500 AV taken right off the top of Allied power. I like that. Stall it baby! It's all about time now.

The Allies hit Ayuthia with a full weight of 4Es. I had a decent CAP up but they are swept aside by the 42k P-47s. It's all altitude in the air war and the P-47s have ruled this for over a year. They'll keep ruling as long as he has some. Now though I can at least have an offensive threat with the Frank 'r' and this will change how the air war goes for the next while. My sweeps will take off little bits at a time. I'm getting a much better air loss ratio these days as well. Once the Ki-83 and Randy 'a' add to this mix sweeping high, we should be able to consistently hit the Allies as they have to protect what they're bringing while on the attack. I like this kind of defense much better than the past year. Dodge and weave, jab, jab jab, with only an occasional right hook.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Chinese coastal areas are now getting beefed up and are ready to take on whatever comes. These are some experienced troops here too, so it won't be easy if Jocke decides to come this way.

LATE WAR AAR
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

MILESTONES: We've played three years in game!!

(The AAR is slightly behind the game, but I hope to catch up tomorrow).

This is a feat in itself and I'm thankful I found an opponent who could get through to this point with some interest and still be looking forward to grinding my forces to a pulp. He's a tough SOB and has gotten continually better throughout the game. I look forward to the next few months, and I'll keep trying to cause a few more problems as he tries to move forward.

ATTITUDE: There are not many late war AARs for the Japanese side. I'd like to make this one of the ones that continues, although I can see why it's so hard for many games and AARs to keep going. Everything I do these days feels like a mistake because no matter what happens the Allies can take advantage of it in some way. When days like yesterday happen, losing a mass of very important stuff, it's hard to keep it going, step up and write about the choices made and the consequences faced. It takes a certain attitude, and I'm just coming to grips with what's needed.

I complained a bit too much in the last few months and I think it affected not only my relationship with my opponent but the quality of my play. I've now made some choices and I hope I can keep this perserverent attitude through the rest of the game as well as a healthy communication and a mutual respect for each other. It is a game, and the fun is in trying to give him a run for his money all the way through as well as achieving some of the goals I set out for myself in game.

GOALS: The goal has always been to get deep into 45. I have to redefine this a bit now. My mistake in getting a massive army corralled in Thailand will have lasting repercussions for the rest of the game. I can occupy some portion of the Allied army in making sure this does not break out and get back into the mix, but this won't take the entire force he's built in the area. Still, the Allies can land closer to the Home Islands with as much force as they need to take virtually any base, so this loss may not change much and I can even find some positives in it now. So here are some small goals I can work toward over the next months.

1. OIL/FUEL

My original goal involves continuing to ship oil/fuel through December. It's not enough, but nothing is enough for the Japanese in this game. With the recent mistakes in my play and good play on Jocke's part to catch up to historical timetables I will be really pleased if I can still ship one big convoy on December 31 from Singers to the North. I've got the KB in range to make a fuss if the Allies try any quick dashes across to cut off the oil earlier, and if I can hold the Indochina area for the next three weeks I could make this target. Anything after would be icing.

2. DEFENSE

Geting the remaining free forces to bases around the HI to make any new Allied invasion at least difficult is a continuing project. The targets I see are as follows:

The Bonins - well defended already and with the small island size, less easy to invade. I'd welcome the extended campaign and uncertain outcome an invasion here would entail.

The Kuriles and Sakhalin - some good defenses and forts, and by the spring they should be even more well stocked.

Okinawa - Needs two more divisions, but I have some allocated and should be able to get 1k AV behind level 6-7 forts in each base here with a good mix of support troops.

Formosa - Already there are 2k AV here with a good mix of support, and another 1k AV is sailing now. If I can get 4-5k AV with arty and a ton of engineers here, get all bases above level 6, then it will be a tough take even though many hexes are in the clear.

Hokkaido - This wil be filled with restricted troops flown in once some of the new ones arrive. I can fly anything that is general defense. There is 2k AV here now already and forts are built.

3. ATTRITION

With the new fighters filling out groups I can sweep and LR CAP again in ways I haven't done for several years of game time. This is getting fun, and adds a dynamism and unpredictability to the conflict. Jocke can no longer simply load up sweeps and bombing runs without consequences. He too has to play with some deception and trickery. It'll be fun going forward if I can keep things in order and hold on to some fighting capability for a while yet.

4. PROTECTION

The Home Islands will be targeted soon. I am preparing, but the house is not fully in order. I need to still allocate AA to some important bases, get more fighter units up and I'm still building forts in many places. Ports are particularly vulnerable now as there are not many that allow the kind of protection that could hurt Allied bombing runs. Hiroshima/Kure and Yokohama are the top two AA bases in the HI and I will begin to get most ships into those. I don't want to over load completely though, so some ships will be spread out around the HI. I'll also keep some docked in larger ports which will be more difficult to hit. Tokyo and Osaka are so important for HI/LI, and they will be heavily protected as well.

SUBS: Jocke's subs take more of a toll, hitting a Tonan oiler (only the second lost in the war) and sinking her. He also hits an xAK.

Jocke seems to be testing my mine defenses with subs. He gets one nailed at Saigon, but gets away easy at Bataan. I have more mines on the way here. Mines will be allocated to big bases and possible targets in the next few weeks. I should get a few subs this way too.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Massive air strikes by B-29s crush the base at Saigon. He does lose about 10-12 on the day, and since he's using his best strategic weapon in a tactical role I can't really complain. I'd rather lose 60 planes on the ground than 60 factory points in the HI. This curtails some bombing activity agains the armor rolling across the Thai plains, but a lot is still hit by the DBs coming from Bangkok.

THAILAND: Big sweeps hit both Nakhon and Auyuthia, and we got some good results in defense. A ton of P-47s lost on the day, and he only gets about 2:1 in sweeps which is really great of the Japanese against here beasts. Nice to see they are vulnerable. I think I've figured some things out. Took a few years, but the layering and placement of CAP has been much better in the past few months, and I think his fighter pools 'should' be showing that. All of the best Allied fighters had significant losses today, and mostly over our territory. The Japanese lose few pilots.

Allied troops are showing an inclination to cross and take Ayuthia. I've moved in a big Japanese army, so we'll see if he keeps going. Tanks take Nakhon after the final air strikes completely wipe out the ground forces here.

So far this plane is only okay. not so great against Allies fighters, but I'm hoping the guns prove tough for the bombers at least.

2nd Maneuver Band HR
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This has been an interesting day. Jocke sent a message asking whether I'd consider removing our 2nd best maneuver band HR. I'll just include the relevant points from his email below and my response. Lets just say what we remember is not always as clear as it seems.

This is a long message so I'll break the second part out into a new post.

...

There has been a discussion in my AAR concerning our HR and the air war in general. Many people believe its a crappy HR and it messes things up regarding the air war. We both know that it does and when we talked about it in mid 43 we said to remove it once you got some AC with access to the highest MVR band.

I kind of understand you want to keep it in now since you can now mass produce a fighter with access to it and have gotten some good results with it. But personally I would like to remove it. We both have "enjoyed" the advantage about equal time and we both agree (at lest we did a while back) that its not a good HR basically making the aircraft not able to go up to the highest MVR band not able to live up to their true potential. This hurts the IJN and the USAAF equally hard. Both lacking a fighter with access to the highest MVR band.

I think its the most fair thing to do and I honestly believe it will not be more advantageous for one or the other side. We both dislike the HR and I would really like to see some more balanced results. Some airframes have really underperformed in our game and it would be cool to see the true potential of planes like the Shinden, P51 and Sams. With our current HR they will always have a secondary role behind the Franks and P47s.

I honestly believe removing the HR won´t be more advantageous for either side. I hope you belive I'm sincere when I´m saying that. That is my true belief. I have stated so in several places in my AAR. I can´t really explain why without giving away a little too much but take my word for it.

Cheers
J

Hey Jocke,

It's interesting how we remember things vs how they really were! I've heard about the Tojo dominance for so long I began to believe it, at least until I looked through my AAR this afternoon. ;)

I'm sure everyone is saying how unfair this HR is to the Allies now that I can also get above some Allied planes. I get it, but I would argue it's been an entirely positive determining factor in Allied success up to this point. There was never a period of advantage from this HR for the Japanese. The HR has been instrumental to Allied dominance in the air through the past 18 months after the arrival of the P-47 for sure though, and that has changed the game completely. It will continue to benefit that plane throughout the game. I should have been the one asking for this to stop for years.

To be honest I have no idea what removing it would do to the game. That is the difficulty. Being completely objective I'd say it's been a huge advantage to the Allies in the middle game when it was most needed, and it kept me from most offensive sweeps for almost two years. Now I have some flexibility.

In 42 the Tojo arrived in August. Before that the A6M3 arrived in 6/42 with 31k ability, but all other Japanese planes before that were only 20k capable at best. The advantages of the early war fighters is maneuver and this is the weakness of both the P-40 and the P-39. Even given a higher altitude the Japanese fighters have 2-3x maneuver advantage.

The Hurri IIc was already in the game as of 6/42 so there was never a period of time when the Japanese (or the Tojo) could sweep over everything. The P-40K also arrived the next month and it gets to 31k with similar speed to the Tojo. The Corsair arrived in 1/43 with much better speed and 31k. Lets not forget the Hellcat arrived in 4/43 with the 31k+ altitude band as well, effectively starting the period when this HR was extremely positive to the Allies.

The great majority of P-40E losses appear to me to have been during escort missions when LR CAP was not present.

It's very instructive to look back through some of late 42-43 in my AAR. The Tojo dominance was minimal and incredibly isolated, and in fact by the time I had enough to sweep much the Brits had plenty of Hurri IIc and the US had a good number of P-40k. In fact the Tojo only did well when I had more numbers (very seldom actually), not because it was a better performer, especially not the Tojo IIa without armor and with weak armament.

I invite you to look into the first year of my AAR to see what was really going on then. It was pretty fun and neither of us knew what we know now. (Please look only up through January 43 for now, and I'll open the rest up as we go, just because I haven't looked to see if there are any pieces of sensitive information there after that point).

Direct links to air battles in 42-43 involving the Tojo. Some are defensive, others are sweeps. Very few sweeps were made by the end of January 43 that involved Tojos, and many included Zeros and Oscars in the mix.

I include here some Allied sweeps as well that involve the Tojo in defense. Many of these include Allied fighters set below their highest allowed altitude (coming in at 29k to a CAP at 31k), likely causing their marginal performance. These are ALL of the Tojo actions in Burma during this period. Seems to be pretty even to me overall, and there is never an action including planes where the 2nd best maneuver band HR lets one dive from higher than the defense is capable of going.

It's interesting to note that by the end of october 42 only 2 of 15 Japanese aces were IJAAF pilots.

Burma: A combined sweep of Hurri IIc and P-40E hit Katha today. The Oscar/Tojo combo worked wonders today and I'm trying to figure out which thing did the trick. I set the groups to 0 hex CAP. A radar equipped base force arrived two days ago. The CAP was layered with 12 Tojos on 50% at 31k and 42 Oscars on 50% at 15k.

For the day we shot down 7 Hurri IIc and 18 P-40E with NO LOSSES!!! I have to wonder if he neglected to pick a good group leader or the groups had low moral or some other setting on that side. The Oscars did most of the damage as well. So I guess there is hope in Burma, for now.

Burma: Not sure what happened here, but the first big Tojo sweep in Burma is a bust. There were thunderstorms, so maybe that was it. 10 Tojos down total for 6 Hurris.

Then to add insult to injury B-17s came into Rangoon and hit the base before our bombers could take off. 5 lost on the ground. Grrrr.

Burma: I also tried a Tojo sweep of Chittagong today that turned out poorly. Or at least only achieved parity. Losses were even here after ops were accounted for.

What I don't understand is that even though the CAP came up slowly, and numbers were always in our favor, we couldn't take advantage and get kills. The pilots are good, the planes are good. They did get a good radar warning, but the numbers were never in favor of the defense.

Burma: I set up a massive sweep plan for Akyab, where at least two groups of Hurris have ben hanging out. Or out on a limb. Seems a bad place to keep them, so the sweeps were intended to be followed by a raid of 90 Helens. These did not fly due to weather, presumably.

The sweeps just about cleaned up on their own. I think I've figured something out here. Our fighters achieved 3 to 1 results, knocking down 22 Hurris in A to A and ops during the day.

Burma: Jocke moved the kitchen sink into Akyab today to make sure he dealt roughly with any more sweeping actions. Well, in an unexpected turn Tojos and A6M3 and 3a took it to the Allied planes for a second day in a row. Even the Lightnings suffered and were not very effective.

In total the Allies lost a bunch of planes again. See below. Of special note are the 9 Lightnings lost. Banzai!

Burma: I sent major sweeps over Akyab today. He's basing about 160 fighters here. Seems to many not to be on a rail line. The 3 CA hanging out at Port Blair will begin a bombardment run also.

On the day the Allies lost about 39 planes, and we lost about 28. Not bad. but most of his pilots are probably safe and sound.

Burma: I threw everything I had at Akyab today, thinking that the moral of the groups there might be very low. Surprisingly they did well, and although for the day it looked like we came out just slightly ahead, this was no massacre. The Allies are getting steadily better in the air.

Burma: A raid came into Katha today. There are only 12 Tojo and some AA there. Oscars were vectored in a and really helped out though, giving even loss numbers for the day. I thikn we can absorb these losses better for another 6 months or so, so more of these small attacks are great, especially over our territory. Only 3 pilots KIA.

2 december 42

Burma: On December 2nd I sent sweeps over Imphal and bombed the oil at Ledo. I won't be taking it so I thought I might as well see if I could take it away from the Allies as well. Results were not bad, and at least the bombers flew this time. After the replay the Oil shows it lost 25 points to those 7 hits. Kunming was the launch point.

The sweeps were about even against determined a few groups of Hurri IIc.

Burma: A big raid cam into Katha and although the CAP didn't do badly, it didn't get to many of the bombers or wipe the escorts clean as in previous encounters. There are just not enough groups up this way to mutually support. Two more Tojo groups are on the way from China. I'll post them in Myitkyina and Schwebo.

Burma: At Myitkyina on the 29th P-40Ks skewer a brand new Tojo group brought in to support North Burma. At first I thought they were at bomber interception CAP level and got nailed, but they were actually at 31k. 2nd Best Maneuver Band HR (continued)
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

So knowing all of this I realize I've been the one struggling under an unfair HR without ever having had the untouchable dive from a higher maneuver band. All of this time I was getting 1:10-15 results against Allied sweeps going from 42k I had been convinced that it was somehow 'fair' since I'd had the period of advantage as well. It's just not true.

Now that several late war Japanese planes do get over 31k maybe I'll be able to have some very small caveat to the massive Allied material and qualitative advantage during this period.

PS - I also think it's odd that Jocke is suddenly so interested in removing the HR when he wasn't that excited in mid-43 with the only plane(s)to be able to take advantage of it, the P-47 (and the Hellcat). I just re-read his email and he claims we agreed to removing it once the Japanese had a plane that could reach above 31k, which simply is not true.

He says,"To summarize a bit I take it by your answer you are no longer interested in removing the HR? I can´t make you but I think its a missed opportunity in properly seeing the late war air model at work ... I think its the most fair thing to do and I honestly believe it will not be more advantageous for one or the other side. We both dislike the HR and I would really like to see some more balanced results."

In other words 'Lets see how well sweeps work with both P-51s and P-47s diving from 40k.' I have to laugh. What we've been seeing since the Frank 'r' arrived is 'some more balanced results.'

He'll continue to win the air war, but I'm guessing this is timed more due to the sudden decrease in P-47 numbers (~100 lost in the past week) and the rather distant date of the next model coming online in 3/45.

I think You should keep that HR alive. Resigning from it will meant that not only P-47 can sweep You to death. Almost any allied plane will be able to sweep above Your CAP

Look at that
Max attitudes of planes

Japan
J2M5 - 36910
A7M2 - 35760
J7W1 - 39370
Ki-44 - 36760
Ki-100 - 36090
Ki-84r - 38270
Ki-83 - 41530

Allies
P-47 - 42000
P-38L - 40000
P-51 - 41900
F4U-1D - 39300
F6F-5 - 37300

It will open many new possibilities to allies to make strato sweeps.
If You resign from HR You not only give up Your only weapon Ki-84r and later Ki-83 but You will give new weapon to allies. Those P-51D, F4U-1D and even P-38L will sweep You in days.
If my data is right he is getting monthly 398 of only those 3 models.

Seems pretty clear koniu. Thanks.

I find numbers more convincing than rhetoric in most cases, and the numbers show a much more 'balanced' air war in the past few weeks since the Frank 'r' has arrived. The Allies still get reasonable results but they have to cover their a** a bit more often since we can now sweep occasionally, which seems much more fun and challenging for both sides. It's been really dynamic and I think will make us both better at staying away from patterns and getting lazy.

5 - 6 December 1944
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: The Allies have moved subs into the area between Formosa and Luzon. There are about ten there now. I've allocated 4-5 ASW TFs and I turned on all nearby bombers to naval search to help light things up. A few dedicated ASW units will move in too. We'll see if he sticks around. The Tinosa was also hit hard in the South China Sea as it lurked in the shallows. He continually puts subs into this territory and once seen they are inevitably crushed.

STRAT BOMBING: The B-29s hit Manila again, but this time I have some night fighters up. It throws off the aim a bit, maybe and maybe damages a few planes, but they skate through for the most part to get 25k+ fires going. The LI here is dwindling fast. Only a couple listed as downed, but at least flak got one. That's a good sign. As several have mentioned, flak at night seems very much less powerful than during daylight.

CHINA/INDOCHINA: Moving units around to stop some gaps the Allies look to be aiming for near Vinh and in Central Thailand. My small forces in the clear will be lost for sure. He can destroy them in one day of 4E bombing in spite of the 3 forts.

THAILAND: I've turned off the arty and his bombardments are doing some damage now. Its not keeping up and of course takes a bunch of supply. I wonder if it might be better to just let the majority of the arty go here and get the main troops moving faster. Still holding out hope, but not as much as before.

PI: Hes still loading up here and hasn't taken many shots on Luzon. My brigade at Mauban is being engaged, and he's making headway with the tanks in spite of negative attack results. I sent in some minelayers and lost one as it moved down the coast when I didn't set LR CAP. I'll keep these at Manila and continue to load up on mines both at Bataan and Manila.

The Allied moves with tanks are being met both from the air and on the ground. The weakened units might have a hard time pushing through in the river crossings that they must traverse to get to the Indochinese coast. I am moving a few more brigades to the Vinh area as a reserve to move in once he shows his cards.

I probably shouldn't even post this as nothing will ever change, but here goes.

I'm finding the ongoing discussion about height restrictions interesting, but it reinforces my belief that the dive bonus ruins the air component of the game. The amount of HR's to limit the effect of the dive and who gets it when to make things 'fair' is becoming ridiculous. I've said all along, reduce the effect of the dive bonus or make it possible for lower flying aircraft to turn the tables on occasion and the game would be better for it. Right now every player still flies at max altitude when allowed to in order to get the bonus via whatever maximum height has been dictated by house rules. To me that's not playing your opponent, but rather the game engine is dictating tactics that one has to follow in order to not get slaughtered.

Layered CAP is nothing short of trying to get the dive bonus at some point during an air action. If you watch the replays, every air combat devolves into rock/paper/scissors with the lowest set altitude taking the brunt of the losses. Every air combat is the same in this regard yet players just accept it. I find it takes tactics right out of the equation for a player, you either conform to this system in order to reduce/get the dive bonus or willingly lose 99% of the air actions if you consciously choose to fly at lower altitudes.

I often feel I'm trying to exploit or reduce being exploited rather than just being able to enjoy playing anymore. I certainly don't enjoy air operations anymore having to always factor in the dive and it's effects.
