Hi Guys,
Fantastic game...REALLY Enjoying it.(Loved the NATO/WARSAW games from back when NATO Commander was new out on the Commodore 64!!).

Just a quick question.

Have dived in to the Campaign (NATO side) and after completing the first scenario and transitioning to the second you are presented with the option of spending victory points to replace destroyed units.
I get that, however the option to spend several hours recovering fallen out units...apart from obviously moving the clock forward for the next scenario, what other effects are there?

I have the option to spend up to 11 hours recovering those units, and as NATO has better IR/Thermal gear I am tempted to spend 5 hours recovering some of my units.
This has the effect of shifting the start time to 8:00 PM...

I am hoping this will degrade WARSAW air (as in Helo's) and also give my units an advantage in combat.
However, is there not some penalty to delaying the action?

You use VPs to replace lost equipment and troops. Time spent gives you a chance to get units that have fallen out repaired/reconstituted enough to fight again. More time spent the better the chance to get more stuff back in the field. What gets "fixed" is random.

Moving the clock does impact the when aspect of the next fight and as you point out there are better times to be fighting for NATO. Side note: Soviet Attack Helo units appear to have received night/thermal gear before most non-recon ground units. FYI.

The other main issue with time is that the war is running in the background at it may end before you get all your missions in and have an adverse effect on the final score of the campaign.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

My initial response to the options was spend the VP's to strengthen the forces and don't waste time refitting but push on. Any time wasted could help the Soviets...
Then I thought about the time factor...would I rather fight at 3:00 PM? or push that out a little to somewhere around 8:00 PM, recover some units and fight with a possible advantage?

So, I pushed it out to 8:00 PM, and now its heavy rain and visibility at 500 Mtrs!!
I should have the technological edge in these conditions. And hopefully can bring it to a close before dawn!

I'm just hoping that is enough to defang the damn Hinds for at least a few hours!

Did I mention this game is fantastic!

There are a couple items that will mess with NATO and its tech toys. Thermal inversion at dawn and dusk and bad weather. Both degrade thermal sights and other optical systems and pretty much levels the battle field. Rain just makes everything a close in knife fight and if it can be seen on either side it dies at those ranges.

Well, I enjoyed that!! The Helo's are a pain, but fun.

I got a Marginal Victory despite absolutely gutting the WP.
He was crushed in the North and non existant in the South, I was three or four hexes away from regaining two VP towns then the 70% rule did me!!
It would be nice if owning the battlefield could be taken into account.
He was thoroughly beaten and had no chance if the scenario went the distance.

Still, I am having a ball.

I think I may take the full time to refit this time...Driving rain and 500Mtr visibility makes for a knife fight.

You guys can be rightly proud of what you have achieved with this game.

Fighting at night gives NATO a definite advantage. Unless, it's raining! Even then you will be able to see one extra hex than the Soviets. Just be aware you have a one hex protective circle around you and that's it.

The Hinds do get lost in the shuffle and that's a good thing!!

Owning the battlefield is taken into account.

Thanks for the kind words. It makes long nights and busy weekends all worth it.

Good Hunting.

Do the players victories and/or defeats have an impact on the overall war? Or is the war"in the background" just white noise?

At the end of each scenario is an Aftermath: section. It tells you how the battle you just ended affects the rest of the war. Kind of

Good Hunting.

MR what would be cool is getting an "aftermath" report based on how well you did in that scenario once completed..so you could have a different report for each of the Victory\Defeat levels..obviously just chrome but would be cool..seeing the result\impact of your incompetence on the War as it unfolded.
