Hi Erik,

Once KB is replenished, is there any chance of a quick strike south of Kyushu if you sail down through Fukuoka (SP?) or would that be too risky? If Allied CV's are covering incoming support TF's at Moppo maybe you could hit them leaving the Okinawa area while out of range from enemy CV retaliation?

As soon as the KB is up and running nothing will stop me from using it liberally. However, that will take while. Many groups are down to 5-10 planes, torps need to be replenished, and Fukuoka is heavily mined and off limits for transit now. So I'm heading up to the North, maybe even to Ominato or Sapporo. Out of the way anyway. It'll be more than a week I think to get it running in top shape.

I'm getting the majority of the BBs out too since they're nearly out of ammo. The CAs will hold fort at Nagasaki. God help us if the Iowas decide to chance it, but a lot of subs, MTBs and mines stand in their way as well.

Wow 61 enemy units in Moppo but only 21000 troops and more than 5000 AFV (!!!) it looks like a huge panzeramee.
In plain Korea (but I suppose also everywhere would be the same) it's more than a challenge for japan army. Lack of AT abilities, impossibility to bomb them by the air because of heavy flak. Maybe you could try to shell them with BB, Maybe If they move in an hex heavily mined like fusan they can't support them with STF and you have a chance.
Great AAR!!

Great AAR!!

It's 210,000 troops!! Landed in one day, or mostly in one phase actually! The transports sunk in the day phase by air strikes had no troop or equipment losses. This is what the Allies can do in 45, and even if you hit 40+ transports before they land it's impossible to stop the landing.

There were a lot of AT guns in Manchuria, and some still there. Most were moved out and used elsewhere. A decent few are on Hokkaido and Kyushu, and I'l try to move some over to Korea. Some troops will begin moving from Fukuoka and Shimoneseki within days. More mines will be laid if possible. The Allies are oblivious to losses, though, and can afford to be, so mines will only take a few out that venture too far.

The BBs will return too, and could still play a part. With literally 4-5 x 10 Fletcher TFs running around, plus the multiple CL/DD TFs and fast BBs any surface movements will be difficult. I'll have to be careful and may have to use a port other than Fusan to deliver anything.

Obvert,

Brilliant move, dude! Outstanding! Very fun reading (and nicely documented, thank you).

Of course, the usual "Banzai" calls and so forth are due. That'll teach me to not read your AAR for two days.

Cheers.

Of course I now still have to deal with a horde of Allied troops in Korea, but it felt good to take a tithe out of the fleet for that move. It's going to be interesting from here on I think.

One more hard kami hit on a CL. Shouldn't this put on of these under after it already is damaged by a torpedo hit? That's a big plane with 3 x 250kg bombs.

Our radar check seems to have been missed at Fukuoka, and the daring Allied raid knocks out an entire Frank factory size 30. Took down about 10-12 4Es on the day still. I hope this continues though. Fighters are ready and hopefully supporting all bases across the area now.

SUBS: Our subs miss their few shots, while the Allies mop up a few damaged IJN DDs that would likely have sunk due to fires. The Allies still have about 40-50 subs in the area South of Korea. ASW flights get a few hits a day as reported.

STRAT BOMBING: Lose most of the LI at Keijo after a B-29 raid. About 50 LI left now.

CHINA: The Allies detour to Canton. a smaller army moves out to meet our larger force in the rough near Kanhsien. I'll shift this army to Kanhsien, then move the other army behind it to block the road farther on in a plus 3 hex. Kahnsien will be abandoned other than a few small units and the main army force will move NE.

KOREA: Moppo falls to a large Allied army of 5200+ AV. A lot of tanks are here, which could present problems, especially late war US tanks. Some heavy arty is headed to try to stop them. The blockade will be forming in Masan. About 1100AV are there now, and it will go up to 3000AV with a ton of arty in the next few days. Hopefully soon enough. Got to get all of the area that's in good terrain occupied as well.

HOME ISLANDS: Some fallout still happening from the battles of the previous days. I left some planes on, hoping CAP wouldn't cover the variety of ships out there. Some are hit, but some of our groups go right in for the heavily CAPed CVs too. Worth it though as another CVE is downed, some transports hit, and a CL hit by a kami.

Really not sure how kami hits are worked out. If 2-3 250kg bombs hit most transports, I'd imagine they'd be in trouble. Especially if they were attached to an aircraft with a good portion of av gas in it and some big heavy parts (which during the war actually were known to punch a hole through an entire DD hull). It seems in game these ships hit on the 14th by Kate kamis with their 2 x 250kg bombs didn't even inhibit the transports from moving at pace and unloading their full complement of troops in one night phase. Those same ships seem to be retreating back easily with the fleet now. Nothing is left at Moppo.

All fighters change to CAP duty around Kyushu and Western Honshu. The Allies hit Fukuoka and knock out a Frank factory in the daylight. Fighters have been distributed around more now and hopefully, if radar gives any time for interception, we can make any more foray like this painful.

The pilot pools are decent. The IJAAF fighter pool is low only because all of my last round of training just started flying CAP and the truing units haven't produced a good crop yet. In a week or so I'll have 300-400 new cross-trained fighter/kami pilots.

Just check and there are 5,000+ pilots in reserve with more in training. Lost a lot in the last few days, but mostly bomber pilots. Probably getting short of DB pilots but TB should be better. Lots of low nav trained for both services.

Econ hasn't changed much since the last post, but I'll put it up anyway. No supply has gone to Manchuria/China for several months from the HI. It's just slowly fading away.

So far we're a good way over the garrison limit. No worries there.

Here you can see the supply issues pretty easily.

... and the global info, which is skewed due to Singapore still having major store of fuel. Still some around the HI though, which is good.

... lastly, though we're not playing for VPs, here is a shot of those, giving a good indication of what happened over the last week. We lost planes, the Allies lost ships.

As allways an excellent read. Mainly because these Japansese are still fighting, and I mean real fighting. They have no chance, of course, but just won't give up :-))

Thanks.

Makes me realize what it must have been like to be an Allied soldier or commander and think after all of the destruction dished out , "what do we have to do?"

The next day still had a few sporadic strikes toward naval targets, but he majority of the Allied fleets pulled back toward Okinawa.

In the last month this group of 9 Jakes on Ishigaki has sunk two AVDs and now possibly 2-3 xAKs moving by with no cover.

Here is a look at the array of Allied tanks on Korea. Wow! Hopefully the troops sent to Masan, in a good terrain hex, can hold them back while reinforcements arrive. We should get at least 2k AV there plus whatever arty survives the Allied airstrikes. I'm sending more to Taiden to try to hold the middle portion which is +3 between the bases as well, and then I'll have to add more to Gunzan, which is dicey as it's a clear hex.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: The Allied subs continue to hover around Moppo. A few a day are reported HIT by ASW air. I'll wait to send in Es as there are now PT boats up here.

KOREA: The Allies again wipe clean a weak IJA force that had been pushed out of Moppo. The 4Es also chime in at Chinhae going for the troops moving there. They get some good hits on arty, but the majority of stuff has already moved through. One full division managed to land at Fusan. Another will begin transit tomorrow from Shimoneseki. Some more AT guns are loading on Hokkaido. In answer to the query about the garrison in Manchuria, lets just say it's not likely to fall below the limits for Russian activation anytime before the set date.

Tomorrow I'll try to hit the tanks. I've got about 400 2E bombers at Hiroshima, and although few have ground bombing skill I have to give it a go. I'll send in about 300 sweepers in front and hope for the best. Moppo is shooing about 180 fighters now, and if they're Spits it could be trouble, but there is no radar in the hex so something could still work there. I've got a ton of fighters including the Ki-83 stationed in Fusan. The bleed didn't work so well this turn, so I'll LR CAP at one hex and try again tomorrow. Really want to get to the 4Es, but it's tough without radar if some of the sweeps get in first.

HOME ISLANDS: The many shattered strike groups begin to refill and recover. it'll be a while before everything is back to strength. A good number of planes are still available though, but nothing will be put on mission orders until it looks like there is an opportunity. I can't afford 1,000 planes lost for a CAP trap. Fighters continue to move and attempt to get full CAP coverage.

CHINA: Canton falls easily to the first Allied attack. Troops begin the maneuver to get to Kahnsien and move NE.

DEI: The Allied continue to mop up Maaya, but unless more is on the way, don't look like they have enough to take on Singers.

The armor is really heading right where it will be easiest to stop it. In the +2 wooded terrain at Masan (the hex to the North of this is +3 while Taiden is +2. Gunzan is the tough one, so I'm glad that's not the first stop for the Shermans and who knows what else). This base has level 4 forts as well.

SUBS: The whole lot of Allied subs are still hanging around Moppo. It'll be tough to break through those if I ever want to bombard the place. I'm sure it's mined to the gills too. I have a few ideas to try to get to a few of the subs at least.

KOREA: The Allied tanks attack!!! Amazing that without knowing our strength here and the day after getting plastered by our 2E flying from Honshu the collection of armored units give it a go, losing 27 tanks and 343 disabled. That's after losing another 25+ destroyed and 300+ tanks disabled on the 19th to the bombings. It likely would have been worse for them though if about half of our units weren't coming out of rail cars and unpacking equipment. Still I'll take it. The forts didn't budge and any losses to tanks are great. Only a few of the arty units had walked in though. About 15 more arrive tomorrow.

So it looks agin like the Allies are a bit impatient, indifferent to losses, or simply have developed such faith in late war equipment that they'll try virtually anything. This makes them dangerous, but as seen with the invasion of Moppo, it can also lead to opportunities. Whichever the reason it is an opportunity, and I have to really work to try to take advantage of this attitude. Several plans are developing to do so. First is the scurry to get units in place in Korea. Not only will I send all free troops here, but I'll also strip other areas of some shore defenses and try to prevent a landing behind the current lines that are developing. The smart move would be to draw everything forward, then land behind it again.

So several of the clear hexes North of Keijo will get base forces with CD guns, and a number of brigades and other smaller units will be flown and shipped over as reserve and garrison for coastal protection. I'll have to ship a bit of supply in as well, since some bases here have little fortification, and in the clear that's trouble. Most are already building up past level 1 now. Some do have 4-6 forts, but mostly those in good terrain. Another division landed safely at Fusan and two more are in transit.

STRAT BOMBING: Well, just about when the mines are getting cleared at Fukuoka 258 B-29s lay another crop at Fusan. I have one AMc which will begin work right away, another couple on the way to Fusan, and I'm now converting all of the rest to the ships that can convert to AMc. Should be another 15 or so before we run out altogether. Does anyone know how many a month the Allies get at this stage?

This is getting tedious, but I can't complain too much. A big B-29 drop usually results in 3-5 sinkings of AMc. I've not lost any other ships though, which probably means the AMc get a good channel going and keep the DL up on the fields as they clear. This is key as the port at Fusan needs to be used, and I can count on using it without too much fear after a few days of clearing.

HOME ISLANDS: I've made the decision that if the Allies want the war decided in Korea, I'm game. We'll send everything. Fly everything. get the navy and see if we can't knock a few holes in the quickly in creasing runway at Moppo. One thing about building em big is that they're harder to fix quickly too. If I can close it he'll need to bring the Navy. The KB will be ready. It needs another 3-4 days to fill out completely. It won't be all experts this time though. At least 1/3 of the pilots are going to be rookies, but a core of golden boys will still lead the charge. There can't be too many more of these battles left for the IJN, so I've got to make them count. The LBA will hopefully be the blunting tool that will let the KB have an effect.

All stricken groups fro the last strikes rate healing up, but a good number, maybe 1,000 planes in all, weren't even involved, and are ready to go.

Another bunch of mines removed from Fukuoka. All told in these two turns it looks to be 297 removed plus the first 80 scooped up from Fusan harbor.

CHINA: The strategy here is taking on a global relevance. I will try to give the Allies what they want. A target.

The main IJA army will move West from Kahnsien. This looks dangerous, and it is. It is still in range of the air forces, instead of moving North out of range. Also, the tanks that rushed ahead are still out there. About 1000AV of them. I'll move on the road toward Pingsiang, which was taken by the Allies. I'll try though to send in 4 divisions from Changsha to get to that base. They may have flown in a big force there, and I'll have to recon to see, but Jocke might also be wary after the last force was obliterated by the main army after doing just that. I should still be able to hold long enough to get the Allied army to either move in behind or to get a battle against only the armor. See map below.

The goal though is not about China, it's about keeping the Allied air force out of Korea. If they continue to get big gains here, hopefully he'll keep them here. So far only a small portion of the 4E have been used in Korea. I'm not keen to see 600 a day there. So far 'it's working!' Meaning the troops are getting pummeled. Fingers crossed.

Even though this is a risk in China, it'll take a while to get to this large army to wear it down. The 3k AV next to Kahnsien won't be able to break though, even with the addition of the armor, should they link up. The forces taking HK will have to get involved. That is a long way off, so maybe this can draw out to keep some of the focus here while the real battles rage in Korea.

KOREA
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The plan for Korea is pretty simple. Stop the Allied advance at one base while attempting to hit that base to shut it down. I've only sporadically counter-punched in this game, and never with everything at my disposal. I'm hoping this catches Jocke slightly off guard, but I can't plan for that either. This has to a be a solid strategic plan including realistic tactical assessments and logistical understanding.

I know I can get what I need into Korea in the short term. Jocke will soon realize what is really happening and should react. This means my shipping destination of choice, Fusan, might get closed down. Happily, the Allies have just mined it, so they have to be on guard to not rush in and land on 400 of their own ordnance in addition to the 200+ Japanese mines in base. He can't though stop an air bridge, and this is already beginning to supplement shipping to bring in smaller units up to brigade size. I can send a 160AV brigade in three days using only a portion of my transports while others continue with needed work elsewhere.

The two most critical bases are Masan and Gunzan. Luckily he's gone for Masan first. Not sure why, but it's a godsend in terms of getting troops in place. I don't have to worry about 5kAV in +2 terrain with 4 forts. That will hold for months considering two command HQs are in range and prepping for it now, and there are a ton of supporting arty and AT guns on the way.

Gunzan in the clear is another problem. I'll get it to 3kAV now and pile a bunch in behind as reserve while trying to deter any further landings behind my forces there. The clear terrain and low forts will make this tough to hold, so I need to quickly create other dangers here. If the Allies move to Masan and siege there, I'll move on Moppo with everything else. Bombers be damned!

In the meantime I'll get as much of a naval presence here as possible and try to do something to the base. I'm sure there are CD guns and all there, but a lot of stuff might still be damaged from landing if I move fast. If I can get 3 days of continuous bombardments I think the addition of the air force on day two and three could be decisive. If the base takes damage, the groups might get their morale hit, they might do worse against the 1000 fighters I send sweeping and hopefully then something could tip. That's the idea anyway. A slow, maybe unnoticed build-up, and then a massive deluge landing on Moppo.

Right. But thank you as I remember I need to send some supply to each of those on the islands.

AIR LOSSES
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Not a bad day to get less than 1:2 disadvantage against Allied sweeps in Korea. Got to a few 4Es but not enough as the CAP was worn out after the Corsairs and Mustangs. Hopefully the distances the Allies are flying will take a toll on those groups. Another reason to make sure Moppo is suppressed if possible. It's going to be tough though.

The beginning moves to clear a path to Moppo have begun. I'm using a lot of the late arriving Es here, both as surface combat and ASW TFs.
