3 JUN 42

CONUS:

Nothing to do here.

NOPAC:

Moved fighters from Anchorage to Cold Bay, it has sufficient facilities and capacity to handle them, they can CAP Cold Bay and LRCAP Dutch, boosting their training!

CANAL ZONE:

Nothing to do here.

CENTPAC:

SS Herring is ready for assignment at Midway, Jeff.

SOPAC:

Air HQ delivered to Luganville. Torpedo Bombers can operate out of there, now. Also, more V, another 57 support available for land aircraft.

ANZAC:

Canceled TF352 (ASW off of Townsville), it was running low on fuel and both ships need a 12 day upgrade. No yard is needed, so Townsville is where they are sent.

TF371 was set to route incorrectly back to LA upon leaving Sydney. Found the mistake before it stumbled into the carriers lurking off of Ndeni! Whew…

CHINA:

AVG 1st Sqn moved to Ledo, will move to Calcutta next turn.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

4 JUNE 1942

Submarine Actions:

Sturgeon is spotted before she can attack, she takes two hits from the E escort.

KXIII duds on an xAK, no damage from the escorts. Later in the day, she is spotted and attacked again, for no damage. She also gets a shot off to a DD, but misses. Not a good day for the KXIII.

KXI is spotted at Soerabaja, but no damage done.

Surface Actions:

Japanese SCTF led by the Nagato, wipe the CL/DD SCTF at Cocos Island off of the map. Some of the Japanese DDs are on fire, that is bad for them. BB vs. CL is a losing proposition, every time. The PTs there are sunk, also.

DD Griffin drives off a minesweeper at Cocos Island.

Air Actions:

15 Kittyhawks sweep Buna in two raids, nothing rises.

15 P-38s sweep Horn Island in two raids, 4 Zeros rise, 1 Zero falls.

6 Dauntless’ escorted by 14 Wildcats attack Buna in two raids. One xAKL takes two 1000 lb bombs. I don’t think it will survive. Another one takes one 1000 lb bomb and is left on fire.

Zeros sweep Kukong. Nothing there.

176 Sallys and 35 Nicks bomb the units SW of Changsha, again. 1420 casualties.

6 Sallys bomb Cebu for minimal damage.

19 P-39Ds attack Finshhafen escorted by 14 P-40Es. 12 Zeros are there to defend. 1 P-39 is lost to 1 Zero destroyed on the ground. There were 2 airbase and 3 runway hits, also.

Ground Actions:

Bombardment at PM does 58 Japanese to 20 Allied casualties.

SigInt of Note:

Nothing.

5 JUN 42

CONUS:

Reviewed air groups. Found a Lancer squadron that had 17 aircraft in it, was able to “upgrade” it to 11 P-39Ds. This will free up 17 airframes to hopefully upgrade the P-38s to next turn when they cycle through.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CANAL ZONE:

AK arrives, sent to Balboa for convoy formation.

CENTPAC:

Reviewed air groups. Made adjustments to more advanced groups to get more diverse training as needed.

SOPAC:

Unloading fuel at Noumea and sending the AOs back to Pago Pago to get more. Keep moving stuff forward.

The AR at Luganville is slowly repairing SYS damage on both Chicago and Atlanta. Waiting until they are down to 40 each, then sending to Auckland for repairs.

ANZAC:

Nothing to do here.

CHINA:

Waiting on five more airframes to fill out 74th FS at Calcutta before moving it into China.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

6 JUN 42

CONUS:

xAK Cape Flattery arrives at Seattle, she makes a good less than 6k tonnage xAP, sent to the yard at Seattle for immediate conversion.

Still waiting on Lancer frames to arrive back in the pool to get the P38s back.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CANAL ZONE:

AGP Hilo arrives at Balboa, loading with supplies and prepping for Pago Pago. An escort will meet her and bring her into Pago Pago.

CENTPAC:

Nothing to do here.

SOPAC:

118th USAAF BF loading at Pago Pago on ships less than 6k each to unload at Vanua Lava to move fighters to it to help cover Ndeni.

Short range ACMs sent to Savaii and Tahiti to support those minefields. Some fuel sent to Tahiti to facilitate this. Also to Auckland and Wellington. The rest are sent as a group (12) are sent to Sydney to distribute north to ports there and the rest towards Perth to cover the Southern Australia coast and then on to Cape Town with a speed 12 convoy and then on to India. Should cover all but one location that needs one.

S-35 is taken out of service at Noumea for repairs. Will be ready in five days.

Gridley will probably sink at Ndeni this next turn unless they can get the fires under control.

Added four more search aircraft to VP-42 at Rossel Island to support the upcoming operation at Milne Bay. This will give this location a full squadron.

ANZAC:

At Brisbane, put S-47 into the yard for repair. Will be out in 5 days.

At Brisbane, put S-34 into the yard for repair. Will be out in 4 days.

At Townsville, put S-18 into the yard for repair. Will be out in 8 days, but will still have 1 engine hit and 8 float hits. Will have to go to Brisbane to fix that.

Finished loading tenders at Townsville. BB TF has finished loading after using 60% of its time for the day. Will be ready to sail into harms way again later today or tomorrow.

Graduated a class of naval search pilots for the Kiwis at Wellington. Exp/NavS/Defn were all 60+, some in the 70s. Moved to General Reserve and filled back up with green pilots.

CHINA:

Const Eng from Changsha to Tuyun to build a layered AF system.

Moved 10 pilots from a transport unit at Luganville with not enough aircraft to a unit at Ledo that didn’t have enough pilots, but had plenty of aircraft. Filled out the Luganville unit with green pilots to train them up.

Only reason I noticed this, Harvey, was the 1st AVG was at Ledo and I was harvesting her pilots for the general reserve and moving the airframes to Calcutta to fill out units there.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

7 JUN 42

Only big thing is getting Louisville out of Ndeni. There was a good DD there, put them in an Escort TF at Speed 6/3 and sent them to Luganville. Tasked one of the P39D Squadrons that were training for strafing to over watch them just to be sure. They can go back to training tomorrow after they tie up in port. Another week and Chicago and Atlanta can leave for Sydney.

Losing the California to a sub sucks.

These are invaluable for amphibious operations down the road.. especially for landing on the Home Islands.

For those who still follow, Hartwig has a CV lurking in the Ndeni area that smashed my SAG there a handful of turns ago, and that
is what Mike is working on saving.

I send them into the teeth of hell, and task Mike with getting them home safely

Milne Bay operation has been on hold for a few turns (at least I think it has.. I was basically gone 3/4 of last week it seemed like)

Harvey has given Hartwig a bloody nose on the Cocos Island, and shutdown all of the major airfields around Port Moresby less Rabaul and Shortlands.

Hartwig continues to blast Chinese troops in China, although Mike as a few tricks up his sleeve in an area that is tough to begin with.
He has taken on that role just fine.

I say Hartwig when I talk about their tactical operations, as he is the one managing their tactical and strategical side of things, while
Bill mentioned that he is running their entire production. I am guessing his input on tactical operations is in there as well. Hartwig
openly admits he was careless with his CVs, but was surprised our CV fleet did as well early on. They have received more since the start, but the
KB has only one fleet CV left if my math hasn't escaped me.

We have the USN's BEST CV left - Wasp.. Every ship is an asset, but we can't be as aggressive with the was in operations. RIGHT now we wouldn't
be aggressive with any CV, just covering new landings, troop movements between bases, and ASW work in areas.

CONUS:

82k, 50k, and 49k Supply convoy leaving LA for Sydney.

Pennsylvania made it to Seattle. Put her in the yard on Critical. Set her to upgrade while repairing.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CANAL ZONE:

Transport TF sent to San Francisco escorted by an APD. The APD will return to Balboa.

CENTPAC:

CAs Chester, Lousville, Canberra, CLs Detroit, Trenton, and DD Case form up at Pearl and head to Pago Pago to meet up with Wasp. DD Hughes is detached from TF72 as it passes the Hawaiian Islands to join up with this TF as it is a first class DD. DD Schley is sent from Pearl to join TF72 to continue escorting it onto Pearl. She is better equipped to do this while the better DD will join the SCTF. The SCTF should be at Pago Pago in 6 days. Wasp arrives in 4.

SOPAC:

Pensacola got away from Ndeni. Sending her to Auckland as they have a 15k repair yard.

Scuttled Gridley. She is at 99 Sys and her fires have been steadily growing. It will save us some VPs. Captain Stickney returned to pool, his is a really good Captain.

Wasp needs to stop at Suva to finish her squadron number upgrades. (Size 8 airfield)

ANZAC:

Harvey, reminder, Searaven is available at Perth.

Sending Colorado back to Townsville to fix the 19 minor float she has, then off to either the West Coast or even the East Coast to fix the rest.

Note at the end of this report, Harvey is slaughtering the invasion at Cocos Island!

8 JUNE 1942

Submarine Actions:

I-174 attacks DD Clark, misses. ASW does nothing in return.

I-173 puts two into San Francisco, she is on fire and reporting heavy damage. No damage to I-173.

Surface Actions:

Bombardment of Siberoet Island in support of the invasion there.

Air Actions:

6 Sallys attack Cebu, minimal damage.

7 Hudsons attack troops on Cocos Island. 17 casualties reported.

30 B-17s bomb Lae in two raids, just a few Zeros are defending and do no damage. They catch five barges and a PB in port. The barges are sunk and the PB took a 500 pounder. There was also, one port hit.

Ground Actions:

Japanese deliberate attack near Kanhsien. It is just an army HQ. It runs with some casualties.

Bombardment at PM does about equal casualties 50 for them, 68 for us.

Deliberate attack at Cocos Islands, it is at 3:1, we are getting negatives for disruption, fatigue, and supply. They do 841 mostly destroyed casualties to 108 half and half destroyed/disrupted casualties. Three units are wiped out by attrition; Sasebo 8th SNLF, 9th Base Force, and 5ths Amphibious Brigade. There are two small SNLFs left.

SigInt of Note:

9 JUN 42

CONUS:

DD Gwin arrives at LA with a tanker convoy. She is replaced by an AM and a DD is dispatched from San Francisco that is current to repace the AM in taken from another TF.

VMSB-244 arrives in San Diego, set to standard training regimen.

Vancouver is at max port/AF size. Moving the only available Eng unit to Prince Rupert to give that base’s upgrades a boost.

Transport TF loading up four units at San Francisco, bound for Pago Pago. The last unit to be transported is an Infantry Rgt. Its transports are undergoing AAA upgrades and will be ready in a week or so to take it to Pago Pago.

NOPAC:

Amphib at Cold Bay reassembled and sent back to Prince Rupert.

Supplies loading at Prince Rupert bound for Kodiak.

CANAL ZONE:

Another DD arrives at Balboa. Waiting on the Capital ships to arrive in five days.

CENTPAC:

Carrier escorts four days out from Pago Pago.

SOPAC:

Wasp and some DD escorts three days out of Pago Pago.

Amhpib TF with Two SeaBee units and an EAB unit diverted from Milne Bay to Townsville and set to not unload. They are just passing south of Suva, and will be routed south of Noumea. ETA 9 days.

Looks like about 10 days to move Chicago and Atlanta to Sydney for repairs.

ANZAC:

CA San Francisco is damaged severely and may not make it the four hexes back to Townsville. Sent her to Cairns to disband there. We can send a AR to Carins to fix enough over time to get her down to Brisbane. I don’t think she will make it much further, maybe not even Cairns.

CHINA:

They are pushing for Kukong, We have considerable forces in favorable terrain, but I have pushed the Chinese around here myself and know what is coming. We will make it as expensive as possible.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

10 JUN 42

CONUS:

VMSB-243 arrives at Santa Barbara. Set to train for naval attack with standard regimen.

NOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

CANAL ZONE:

AV Chandeleur arrives at Cristobal, sent to Balboa. Will be sent to San Francisco eventually for aircraft transport operations.

CENTPAC:

Set a TF to pick up the 102 USN BF at Lahina and move it to Hilo where we need some air support.

SOPAC:

Nothing to do here.

ANZAC:

3 S-Boats and 3 Long Range Boats come out of upgrades at Townsville. The S-Boats are sent to short patrol areas while the long range boats are sent to areas further out. Some of the long range boats are re-tasked to Midway when it is closer to the patrol area assigned.

San Francisco made it to Cairns. We need to send an AR there. Sending her escort to escort California into Townsville as her previous escort gave itself to save her and she still needs one in these sub invested waters.

CHINA:

One more day and the AVG unit in Kukong will need to leave for refit.

Trying to cut off as many supply routes with my understrength units leading to Kukong. Hopefully this will upset their timetable and delay things a little longer for very little cost other than getting these substandard units back in the cue for reinforcements.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

RUSSIA:

Nothing to do here.

How come this is all the more you do there? Is there not much going on there at this point...?

We get the occasional LCU or air unit. But, without the Soviets activated the only thing they can do is take replacements as they trickle in (In June of 1942, every available man, gun, & AFV was going the other direction!). Hence, a lot of nothing to do here.

I use a template for my reports both as I am lazy and it reminds me to look at an area before moving to the next.

We'll do everything we can to save her.

She's currently at Cairns.

Yeah, she will be there a while. We need to move the AR at Brisbane, once one of the now 6 ASW DDs comes out of refit. This will help get her in condition to move to Brisbane for full repairs.

OK, mud on my face...

How deep did it get there? My sister in Wichita got quite a bit.

The gentleman we have been discussing the last two days is being hailed as a hero, putting the aircraft down where he did and missing any populated areas. It was the only place he could have put the plane without injuring any on the ground. That is a brave thing to do.

She is sunk. What you are seeing there is before the three torpedoes from the 11th.
