After all of these turns running through heaps of Allied subs, a lone sub nails the Yamashiro with two TT on her way back to base. As shown below, the damage will likely put her out for the rest of the war. of the float damage 48 is major, which should take half a year to fix. Still, if we can keep the base closed, it's worth it.

In China air strikes completely destroyed a small cavalry unit moving toward the army stack. Of course, this is what I asked for, so I have to deal with it.

Jocke made a great move here getting about 2/3 of his forces out toward Psingyiang. He plastered a brigade in the clear and will probably move to Psingyiang now. Our four divisions there are supported by some prep from the many HQs next door including the Southern and China Expeditionary Command HQs. It'll be a tough hold. I'll try to get something across the border to open the hex. Fingers crossed.

Here is your USS Sea Cat... I thought that was funny, too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_catfish

I am really enjoying your game here in the last stages of the war. I have never played this late, but it looks fun.

Good to see the Japanese always have surprises from beginning to end.

Thanks for the note. I see that you post in Jocke's AAR a lot so thanks for stopping in. I never mind those who read both, and it's nice to have a small post from time to time.

Getting this far is a little bit of everything. At the moment it is fun though. We're both interested in every turn more than the time over the past 6 months or so before this.

Here is at least one kind of dogfish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogfish_shark

I do read both, and will never breach either side. I read both as it is really interesting to watch things unfold
from both side's perspective... rather funny to watch things happen when you know what both sides have planned.

I tend to follow AARs more on the Allied side as I enjoy that side of the war and know more about it. The production side is very intriguing as well.

I've always wondered how many subs the USN would had to a built to use all of the marine species there are.. I am sure millions.

What do you suppose the deal is with your planes not flying like you have mentioned..

In my AI game just last night, I had full detection on an invasion fleet and Hornet failed to launch a single plane three hexes away and had 55% sorties... it was maddening.

As I don't play Japan, I wouldn't notice the TF screen art.

Is that Mogami dead in the water? That photo always sticks out in my mind when I think of Japanese WW2 ships.. and the flight decks of the Pearl Harbor strike.

It has to be weather, because it's so many bases planes all pointing at Moppo and NONE flying to hit the base. Still it is maddening when everything not set to hit the base flies just fine right through the hex.

Ah - that is not modeled.

Per 7.4.2.3 of the manual, you get to convert 1 per day, which matches my experience. What the manual doesn't explicitly state is that if you don't convert on a given day, the conversion accumulate for future use. However, there is a cap on the accumulation, IIRC it's 7.

It's interesting that the LR CAP flies there isn't it. I get it, the strike probability is different, but it's just a tad frustrating after four days of waiting.

For these things I wish there was an over-ride with an understanding that ops losses would be greater and accuracy lessened, when you just have to get there now! I wish a lot of things though. Have to play the game as it is, so I'll keep tweaking and adjusting.

[EDIT: Just reading through the CR and some sweeps did fly in and found 'Heavy rain' over Moppo. So it is weather again.]

Thank you. I've not read that part at all. That seems about right, except lately I'm able to do two a day and that's every day. The first time it may have been up to seven groups. Felt like more.

I'll keep plugging away with this until all of the training groups can also fly standard CAP. Since I'm losing around 300 to withdrawals soon (!!!!) I'll need everything I can use.

SUBS: Again a handfull of subs sunk, but they get their revenge this turn at last. The Carp puts two torps into the Yamashiro and she's out of the fight for a good while, most likely for good. I have two more BBs repairing which should be ready within a week. There are still at least 30 subs within the 3-4 hexes around Moppo. How many are there???

KOREA: The garrison is nearing 20k AV now. More is on the way. If I can get 4x Allied strength it might just be possible to push them back. Not sure about that, and the supply needed might be too much, but I'll make preparations just in case there is an opportunity. Right now the Allied troops have stopped on either side of the Moppo hex as if waiting. If the fields at Moppo can ever be hit by air I'll then switch some planes to bombing the troops. We'll see how much good AA he brought. I'm sure it's a lot. I might be able to get some good bombardments thought too on the ones to the East of Moppo.

The battles on the sea went mostly for the IJN during this turn, but the loss of Yamashiro colors that a bit. It was inevitable to get something hit after a while. Too many subs. The pressure will stay on with small craft and Es tomorrow trying to take out as many PTs as possible while the moon is bright. I see more being led up from Oikinawa by a CVE TF as well. How many do the Allies get? I'll post the last months sunk ship lists soon. Pretty amazing.

STRAT BOMBING: The B-29s drop another full load of mines at Shimoneski. It's be a while before we can clear those out. Still working on Fusan, but Fukuoka is cleared.

HOME ISLANDS: The P-47s come en masse to Kyushu but about 1/4 of them don't make it back. This is an outstanding result against these planes, and I'm sure the pilots were very good. Our Sams and Franks did yoemans work, some way down at 10k, but when the P-47s got down there late in the engagements there were a lot of good planes waiting for them. We can take this for a while, but once the bombing starts to follow it could get dicey.

We're taking the day off from bombarding, getting TFs realigned to get some escorts in them. We're definitely running low on DDs now, but another 27 knot Matsu class arrives, really only about as good as a US DE, but they'll do.

RECON: I haven't seen any recon of Northern Korean bases, so maybe this is really a reinforcement of Moppo trying to get in there.

CHINA: The Allied move into the flat was smart, and now they can move to challenge our four divisions in Psingyiang or move NE to further conquests. About 17 units are left in the hex with our army. I'm not going to bombard just yet. I'm toying with the idea of a DA right off the bat, but I'll see where supply is tomorrow before pulling the trigger. The goals are still being met though, as the main Allied air force is still here and not farther North.

Near Samah Norms found a small TF of LSTs and sank a few. It will now move on North to add tot eh search capability in the East China Sea.

DEI: Search found a nice troop TF of LSTs hanging around between Sumatra and Borneo, and our ship killer Jakes went for them, sinking 5-6 LST with troops on board. Nice.

The Allied sweeps again hit island off the coast of Kyushu. It's nice to get so many of the P-47s. Better than 1:2 which is rare against hose guys. Plus, I lose 35 pilots and the Allies lose probably more than that, and likely better ones.

This stuff is just for fun. It's always good to get to troops on ships though.

The DEI is not a very important area at all right now, obviously. Interestingly though, the HI is still producing at Singers. I'm moving most planes out that can fly long distance to get the fighters to the HI and the search planes pumping up the DL on the Allied fleets. I lose 4-5 a day at least making sure we know where they are and what they are.

I haven't used anything in this area for a very long time, so it was probably a bit surprising to see Norms hitting a small troop convoy moving along the Chinese coast. No CAP up at all around here. Some Jacks are moving through as well, so if strikes come in to hit this base next turn there will be a surprise here for them.

The Allied fleet moved slightly South and West. Not sure if they are retiring to think again, if this is a feint preceding a big move somewhere, or if it was just to see if the KB or LBA would react to their presence.

Also a small CVE TF is leading PTs up from Okinawa.

The next turn is back. I'll be running it sometime this afternoon. Have to work now!

@ koniu

Not sure even now what will work consistently. Earlier I was also suffering at a 1:5 deficiency or worse some turns, with only a few bright spot turns that got 1:2 or so. Mostly I tried layering. I think though with the P-47 what I figured out was that the layering has to be specific, so the most maneuverable planes low, and something very good up high to meet them. Other times I actually just put it all at max height hoping the numbers would help. Sometimes they did.

With a max altitude at 32k it is a bit more evened out, but in this example the CAP was low at 10-20k. Maybe having so many planes that low, drawing the beasts down, but still having some up high to dive in the middle of the fur ball can work. It just keeps changing though. The P-47N presents a difficult problem. It usually gets so many kills early it then just scoots out and there is no time to get them in the mass of defenders late.

For this one I also had a lot of LR CAP set to stay over the shipping and they got involved all over, so maybe it was also drawing new planes with each strike. Small numbers of the KB CAP also got over to get involved, and those pilots are pretty good. Here is the complete CR for the first sweep.

Earlier I experimented with a low CAP and it was not too successful, but this did work (as well as can be expected) even without radar in the target hex. Interesting.

The most successful moment of the day was when the Franks made it over at 32k though. Even more interesting.

The Jacks that engaged first at 10k must had drawn them down, then the Franks and others pounced getting a good dive. The Franks reacting so quickly to get there in 9 minutes also helps. So while the right conditions existed for this throughout the turn used on settings, it only came together perfectly to give the defenders an advantage once during the set of sweeps (which may of course represent different aspects of one simultaneous battle).

The turn replay opened with some MLs picking off mines almost one by one! it took a while, but they got a bunch. Finally learning what these things are good for. I have one AM left and they can go into a minesweeping TF with it. I have there posted there to see if they'll sweep even in a SCTF.

Next some Allied cruisers showed up and plowed through a bunch of Es. Some shots hit Helena, and I thought maybe they'd be sowed by the combat and some damage, but they moved on easily and were only in range of some kamis set from Nagasaki that didn't fly7 hexes to et them. Probably as they ended up two hexes from the Allied fleet.

Corsairs showed up today, but somehow the stars aligned and they were consistently mauled. It was a fun thing to watch.

Unfortunately Jocke is careful and sends some sweeps before the bombers to take on the sudden fighters at Samah. I managed to still extract five or so planes so the group will not have to be withdrawn, which was the goal. I also waned Jocke to have to think of protecting things in the Chinese area again. I hadn't challenged anything in a while there in the air.

Also on the air strike agenda or today was hitting some tasty convoys in the South China Sea. I figured not much would be covering them, so Graces moved ito Formosa and hit hard, likely sinking about 10-12 xAK. nothing huge, but every little bit helps. If we were playing for VPs it's these kinds of strikes that would keep the Japanese in it late.

The Corsairs kept coming, probably 300+ on the day, although I haven't counted. Ours Franks, Sams and Jacks kept shooting them down though, and on the day it's a positive result for the first time in memory against the Allied sweeps!!!

I'm sure the P-47N will make an appearance tomorrow in an attempt to exact some retribution. Will we also see a Hail Mary somewhere? That is the pattern.

29 May 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: Only two subs sunk and a few others hit today as the Allies put a damper on our E patrols with a deft cruiser strike. About 15 Es lost, although I lost count. We lost an I-boat also to some DEs. Not many left!

KOREA: Finally the strikes hit Moppo. The Allied divisions that moved out of Masan have joined with their Armor. No movements up yet toward Gunzan. That base now has around 4k AV.

STRAT BOMBING: Nothing today.

HOME ISLANDS: The sweeps off Kyushu get to and down a reported 110 out of 207 sweepers today!!! Holy CAP! We lose a total of 91 fighters globally. Of course only about 35 pilots are KIA, with a bunch more wounded. The rest got some great exp and kills. I'll have to check to see if we now have a new leading ace.

That is not usual. Whatever is going on I'm going to keep it going. I won't get ahead of myself or do too many cartwheels about this one turn. It's a long game and we don't have any P-47s to fly on our side. So tomorrow could be as bad as this was good. Five major fighter groups, including the 97 plane Ki-83 group formerly based in Fusan, had to withdraw. Big hurt.

Odd. I haven't seen this before!

Mine Sweeping TF 10 aborts mission and returns to Fukuoka

RECON: Recon hits Kaishu and Keijo, plus there is some on Port Arthur (lightly held) and a few interior Korean bases. Interesting.

Also, this. Very interesting.

Coastwatcher Report: 210 ships reported in port at Naha

CHINA: Not sure we'll hold Psingiang with the amount of bombing going on.

Lots of planes lost to Allied CAP, but have to keep flying to make sure their DL is high.

Hi obvert - Great to see the late war fighters holding their own. I'm sure you are getting a pilot advantage fighting over home territory.

When you have a chance, could you post what how your CV/CVL/CVE's are arranged by TF? Thanks!

Sure. Will do.

The pilot advantage will take a long time to swing in my direction. notice the losses totals: 41,987 to 21,429. He's gotten a lot of kills, and a lot of aces I'm sure.

I've mostly fought over my bases though, so pilot losses only just went over 20k recently. Still many very good ones around, especially after having to disband some groups. I will now make a golden Ki-83 group with about 60 of the best.

This is from a few turns ago. I'm counting the MIA as lost, so it's seemingly pretty low for the amount of airframes lost. (this is from a few days ago as well).

Here is one of the groups I had to withdraw. Not happy about it.

Good pilots for the pool at least. But yea, that sucks to have to pull units like that. Have you thought about keep one or two around and just paying the PP cost? Or are PP's being used to send Home Islands infantry to Korea?

There are still too many things I'd like to use PPs for, and it's pretty expensive. I have enough free troops now without paying extra. It also helps that for the past two days the results have been really good, most likely cooling the enthusiasm for sweeps in the next few.

Most of the PPs right now go to turning training units to kami/CAP. All of the F/FB training units will go this route. I might need a lot more later to turn other training units to kami as well. I still change a lot of group leaders, ship captains and TF commanders, even for small TFs. Right now PPs are hovering around 350.
