I had an interesting one happen the other day while testing Indian Ocean Brawl. Long story short, there was a lone Su-27 that took a liking to me SAG and decided to get a little close. I had already set the SAG to AI HOLD FIRE so as not to waste missiles. However the Flanker was getting a little too close for my liking so I decided enough was enough, so started lobbing Standards; every single one missed. I must have lobbed 20 to 30 missiles at this lone Flanker from 30 miles out to nearly point blank rank and every single one missed, which in itself is frustratingly comical. The Sea Sparrows were useless due to the SARH bug that was fixed in B498. The last resort was the CIWS and herein lies the point of this message...

With AI HOLD FIRE enabled I had to utilize the CIWS manually, which against the Flanker was exceeding difficult to catch with the SHIFT-F1 combo quick enough as it was danger close. After about 6 or 7 passes and strafing my Leahy cruiser and causing nice damage, I finally was able to take it out with the Phalanx.

Is there any way we can get the CIWS systems to operate independent of the AI HOLD FIRE option either automatically or by user decision (seperate check box)?

30 Standards all missed? That's interesting. Can you post the message log?

Unfortunately I don't have it saved or I would surely upload post haste. However it does stick to my memory since it was pretty comical. The engagement report kept saying something to the effect of a combination of the Flanker's tech, chaff, and agility were defeating the kill probability roll. This was with firing RIM-66's from the Tico, Kidd, and Leahy. 30 might be an overstatement, but it was surely reaching close to if not 20 by the time I was going for the Phalanx kill. It was so frustrating I even lobbed some 127mm rounds at it!!

Next time it happens post the log and tell us where you think the percentages are wrong, and your sources for your opinion.

Let's do the math.

Just to humor us, try the same situation but swap out the Flanker with a MiG-21. Observe the message log and see how the math changes.

See a pattern?

Just to be clear I wasn't criticizing the math involved. The purpose of this thread was to see about the feasibility of give a little more dynamic control over the HOLD AI FIRE option to include or not include CIWS, since unless you are ultra-quick with the keyboard the engagement time is so small especially vs a missile. The example of the Flanker was only to illustrate the point that I couldn't engage it with the guns fast enough.

But if this situation happens again I would be more than happy to post my results.

You can allocate the weapon and the AI will wait for the targeting to be within the needed parameters to fire... you don't have to wait

Really? Didn't realize that. I'll give that a try, thanks.
