A strike was made by 120 X B-24D (15 damaged) and 72 X P-38J and the airfield was very heavily damaged, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed, 3 Sally, 11 Franks, 3 Topsys, 7 Graces, 6 Peggys, 1 Dave, 8 Tinas and 3 Tabbys were destroyed and casualties were heavy. Another attack followed later on as 40 X B-24J (15 damaged), 12 X P-51D and 37 X P-38J added moderate damage to the airstrip, caused some more secondary explosions, trashed a Tabby and inflicted moderate personnel losses. 3 PB4Ys (1 damaged) hit a PC with a bomb that did heavy damage and started fires. Nearby 3 X PB4Y and 3 X B-25J hit an MSW with 5 bombs, sinking it. Allied planes clobbered some Japanese ships. AK Mikage Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage AK Norfolk Maru 8 bomb hits, sunk AK Celebes Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage More Allied planes hunted, found and hit some Japanese ships. AK Ryochi Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage AK Borneo Maru 1 bomb hit, sunk AK Syohei Maru 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage Another strike hit an AK with a bomb that did heavy damage and triggered a fire. The Allied planes continued to rove in the area hitting an AK with 2 bombs for heavy damage and fires. An AP was hit with 3 bombs for heavy damage and a raging blaze. An AK was heavily damaged and burning from a bomb hit. 13 miles E of Jambi the SS Dorado attacked a pair of PCs, hitting 1 with 2 torpedoes. Later the sub tried and failed to mount an attack on a DD, 2 PGs and 2 PCs. On the bright side the Japanese never knew she was there. In the afternoon the Dorado failed in an attempt on a PC. In the late afternoon the sub tried to attack a pair of PCs and failed to get into position as the PCs detected and hunted her. At Maizuru 139 X B-29 ran into 7 X George, 35 X Jack and 17 X Tony. A George (4 damaged), 4 Jacks (26 damaged) and a Tony (10 damaged) were shot down and the Americans lost 9 Superforts to all causes and had 50 more damaged. Another strike followed a bit later as 139 X B-29 braved the reduced CAP of 4 Georges, 15 Jacks and 11 Tonys. A George (1 damaged), 5 Jacks (5 damaged) and 2 Tonys (5 damaged) were splashed and the Americans lost 4 bombers and 30 others were damaged. A third wave of 212 X B-29 was escorted by 36 X P-51D. 5 X George, 18 X Jack and 14 X Tony tried and failed to reach the bombers as they lost 4 Georges, 15 Jacks and 9 Tonys to the Mustangs. 3 Mustangs were shot down in the furball. 1 B-29 was lost and 26 were damaged by the intense AA fire. The Nakajima engine plant was subjected to extremely heavy damage in the raids. Mutanchiang was hit by 18 X Tu-2S (4 damaged) and another strike was made by 9 X Tu-2S (1 downed, 2 damaged). Light airstrip damage, a couple secondary explosions were seen and casualties were very heavy from these attacks. Harbin was pounded by 85 X Pe-2 (1 downed), 83 X Tu-2S and 61 X Yak-3 for extremely heavy airfield damage, a secondary explosion and extremely light troop losses. Russian planes attacked causing moderate casualties as they lost a P-63A (1 damaged) and a P-39Q (3 damaged). The IJA 11th Division was hit twice by Soviet planes for heavy losses as 3 Tu-2Ss were damaged. The IJA 108th Division managed to destroy 2 P-63As (17 damaged), 1 Tu-2S (3 damaged) and 3 P-39Qs were damaged in 3 air strikes. The unit had heavy casualties from these attacks. Then the IJA 127th Division was hit for heavy losses and 6 B-29s were damaged. The Russians had light casualties from the Japanese artillery. The Russians surged forwards and took some ground as both sides had extremely heavy losses in the battle. Palembang was hit by Allied planes who caused moderate port damage, a secondary explosion was observed, a Frank was shot down and casualties were extremely light. A Liberator VI was damaged in the attack. Kadina was blasted by 129 X B-24J for very heavy port damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were moderate. Naha was bombed by 45 X B-24D and 151 X B-24J for moderate airfield damage, very heavy port damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were moderate. At Kweiyang the IJA 36th Division was hit by Chinese aircraft for heavy losses. A Mitchell was lost and 5 took damage in the attack. At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was jumped by Allied planes. 5 Franks and 2 Tonys ran and 2 Helldivers took damage as the unit sustained light losses. The IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion was attacked a little later and this time the CAP didn't escape as 3 Franks and 2 Tonys were splashed. A TBM was damaged and an Avenger II was destroyed as the unit absorbed heavy casualties. An Allied attack stalled with the attackers having moderate losses and the Japanese light casualties. At Changchun the Soviet 49th Rifle Corps was struck by 3 X Randy (2 damaged), 5 X Ann (2 downed, 1 damaged), 3 X Sonia (3 damaged) and 6 X Sally (3 downed). The unit had moderate losses. A Japanese artillery bombardment inflicted very heavy casualties on the Soviets. A Soviet assault on the Japanese positions failed with both sides absorbing extremely heavy losses. 18 miles N of Muntok Allied planes struck a couple of Japanese ships. PG Keiko Maru 5 bomb hits, sunk AK Daishu Maru 1 torpedo hit, sunk 21 miles E of Jambi Allied planes struck a PC with 2 bombs for heavy damage and fires. Then another PC came under attack, but evaded the falling bombs. 139 miles E of Tori Shima Allied aircraft attacked an IJN DD, hitting it with a torpedo that sank the already damaged ship. A TBM was damaged. Palembang was raided by 8 X Barracuda, 1 damaged, and no damage was done to the base. Another strike arrived and a fuel explosion was reported. Balikpapan had it's port lightly damaged by 5 PB4Ys. 143 miles N of Jesselton 43 X PB4Y swooped in on some Japanese ships. AK Kenryu Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire AK Nichizui Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire AK Myoko Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire AK Havana Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire AK Ryoka Maru 2 bomb hits, on fire DD Kasasagi 1 bomb hit, on fire 6 more PB4Ys attacked later, but failed to hit anything. 72 miles E of Pusan the SS Sculpin tried but couldn't get into position to attack an AP. At Malang artillery exchanges cost the Allies moderate losses and the Japanese had heavy casualties. At Kweiyang Chinese artillery dished out very heavy Japanese losses. Stalin rages and issues orders for his troops to fall back to positions that they may winter in. He demands to know why this winter offensive is stalled. The Lucky 11 can't believe their ears and then they start praying for rain. The mission was brutal with heavy losses and now they want to send they group out again on short rest, again. Bill scans the horizon and is comforted knowing that his small TF has now joined up with a CVTF, making them a tough nut sailing around with a chip on their shoulder and looking for trouble. Ed was placed on a medical flight to be transported back to Ulithi. From Ulithi he will be flown back to Pearl Harbor and then the doctors there will decide what to do with him. Ed is out of it most of the time and in extreme pain so the doctors have prescribed heavy doses of medication to kill the pain. The transport brings Sam and Frankie ever closer to their destination. The smell on the transport is a mixture of sweat, tobacco and vomit. One of the guys comes back and asks Sam why the Navy calls it the head and Sam says that he doesn't know. “Anyway,” the man continues, “The head is backed up and things are going to get a lot worse in here before we get to where we're going.” Sam thanks him for the great news and announces that he's going for a walk. With that Sam whistles and Frankie comes at a run and the two of them head topside. During the days the men are allowed on the deck, but at night they are supposed to stay below and now a sailor tells Sam he can't come topside to which Sam tells him about the stench and that, “Unless you're going to shoot me you're not stopping me.” The sailor says OK, but that Sam can't smoke and the two of them talk while the sailor plays a bit with Frankie.
