Status: offline 		Remember that 500 pound bombs were GP and did little damage to anything other than the upper works of a ship from heavy cruisers on up because of the armor.

Combat

Near Niigata a PB2Y Coronado spotted an AK, reporting a hit. It wasn't to long before 3 X PB4Y were greeted by 2 X Frank as the bombers went after an MSW. No damage was done to any of the participants.

Near Ominato a PB4Y spotted an AK and claimed a hit. Then all hell broke loose as 3 X PB4Y (1 damaged) attacked an AP, but failed to score any hits. A little later 12 X B-25J Mitchell rolled in and they hit an AK with 5 bombs that sank the ship and another AK was hit twice leaving it burning. In the afternoon 13 X B-25J, 6 X A-26B and 39 X P-38J attacked the ships in the area and hit an AK with 2 bombs for fires and another was left burning from a bomb hit. Another strike made up of 3 X B-25J and 5 X PB4Y hit a pair of AKs. One ate 4 bombs that killed it and the other was hit once and was burning. Another attack was made by 3 X B-25J and an AK was hit by a bomb for heavy damage and a fire.

At Madioen landing Allied troops sustained very heavy casualties. The Allied assault took the base and now the Allies have the toehold that they hope will enable them to secure all of Java.

85 miles SE of Taipei 4 USN DDs attacked an IJN sub and many hits were claimed. Later a kill was awarded.

Near Muntok the SS Pomfret attacked an AK, hitting it with a torpedo that ignited a fire, caused heavy damage and troops were seen going into the water. The 3 DDs, 4 PGs and 4 PCs hunted the sub, but they were unable to locate her.

79 miles NW of Sasebo the SS Trigger almost had a CL lined up, but the prey zigged where it was expected that she would zag.

Okayama was bombed by 144 X B-29 and 86 X P-51D. 18 X Frank and 8 X Tony valiantly attempted to get to the bombers only to have the Mustangs splash 17 Franks and 8 Tonys. The Americans had 2 Mustangs shot down and the AA fire downed a Superfort and damaged 9. The heavy industry was very heavily damaged.

Despite a snow storm Mutanchiang was struck by 30 X Pe-2 (1 downed, 11 damaged) and 35 X Tu-2S (5 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed and personnel losses were very heavy. A short time later 9 X Tu-2S (3 damaged) arrived and added negligible damage to the airfield and heaped heavy casualties on the Japanese.

Palembang was under a CAP of 15 X Frank when 24 X Liberator VI, 2 X P-47D and 6 X Thunderbolt II roared in. The fighters dueled and 2 Franks were shot down and a Thunderbolt II was damaged. 4 bombers were damaged by all causes. The port was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and the CL Jintsu was hit by 3 bombs for heavy damage and raging fires.

At Harbin the IJA 11th Division was pounced on by 57 X Pe-2 (2 damaged), 56 X Tu-2S (2 damaged), 62 X P-63A (11 damaged) and 40 X Yak-3 who inflicted heavy losses on the unit. Nearby the IJA 127th Division was jumped by 10 X Pe-2 (1 downed), 10 X Tu-2S, 3 X P-63A (1 damaged) and 3 X Yak-3 for heavy casualties. Artillery was active on both sides, but the Japanese failed to harm the Russians while they had very heavy losses inflicted on them by the Soviet big guns.

At Changchun the 6th Guards Artillery Division was hit by 18 X Ann (3 downed, 11 damaged), 11 X Sonia (4 downed, 3 damaged) and 6 X Sally (6 damaged). The unit had moderate losses. Soviet artillery accounted for moderate Japanese casualties.

211 miles SE of the Bonin Group 13 X SB2C (4 damaged) attacked a pair of IJN DDs, hitting 1 with 4 bombs that tore the ship apart and the other was hit once and was burning. Another strike of 7 X SB2C arrived and they attacked another DD, hitting it with 2 bombs that set it ablaze and did heavy damage. In the early afternoon 22 X PB4Y (2 damaged), 14 X B-25J and 72 X P-38J arrived and hit 2 DDs with 7 bombs each sinking them both.

Near Muntok 13 X Mosquito FB.VI, 10 X Barracuda, 12 X P-47D, 25 X Thunderbolt II and 4 X Spitfire VIII were hunting for Japanese shipping and they located and hit a PG with a torpedo that caused heavy damage and left the vessel going under by the bow.

94 miles SE of Shanghai 37 X B-25J (2 damaged) and 126 X P-38J attacked the Japanese DDs, hitting 2 with a bomb each for fires. Shortly thereafter 19 X PB4Y (6 damaged), 10 X P-51D and 32 X P-38J struck and hit 2 DDs. One ate a bomb that caused it to sink and the other was hit 3 times for heavy damage and fires.

67 miles SW of Saigon the SS Carp attacked a PG and hit it with 2 fish that ravaged the vessel, causing it's demise.

At Malang both sides traded artillery barrages with the Allies taking heavy casualties and the Japanese absorbing moderate losses.

At Kweiyang the Chinese assaulted the Japanese positions taking extremely heavy casualties and dishing out extremely heavy losses on the Japanese. Unfortunately the Chinese lost more than twice the number of men that the Japanese did as the attack was repulsed.

Sam watches as more ships arrived in the harbor area and troops from the 25th Division embarked on them. His unit still hasn't had orders so he knows that the answer to his prayers is not being answered, yet.

Ed's condition has been stabilized, but he's in bad shape. A fragment of metal is lodged in his neck and x-rays showed that it rests between 2 of his vertebrae. Another piece of metal was removed from his shoulder and he did something to his head because it's suspected that he was thrown into a bulkhead.

Elaine feels guilty that she had such a good time last night. She met a man that had just returned from Europe and they danced the night away. Now she and her sister are discussing it.

Combat

Near Ominato a PB2Y spotted and attacked an AK, claiming a hit, sinking it. Not to far away an A-26B spotted, attacked and claimed a hit on an AK In the afternoon an A-26B spotted an AK and claimed hitting it. Another A-26B spotted an AK and reported hitting it.

147 miles E of the Bonin Group a PBM Mariner spotted an AK and reported a hit. Later 7 X SB2C (6 damaged) and 11 X F4U-1 jumped a DD, but failed to hit it as the destroyer displayed wild maneuvers. Shortly thereafter 15 X PB4Y (2 damaged), 9 X B-25J and 87 X P-38J struck and a DD was hit by a bomb and was on fire while another ate 4 bomb strikes for heavy damage and fires. Later 3 Helldivers and 11 Corsairs went after a damaged DD, but missed it. In the late afternoon 11 X PB4Y (5 damaged), 13 X B-25J (3 damaged) and 77 X P-38J hit a DD with a couple of bombs that added to the already heavy damage and fires.

An IJN DD discovered that Iwo Jima was protected by mines, the hard way as it hit 2 mines that caused heavy damage and turned the ship into an inferno that was extinguished with a loud hissing sound as the ship went under. Alerted that danger lurked an IJN DD was engaged by 3 X PT. PT-220 was hammered and went down and the DD was struck by 2 torpedoes that heavily damaged the ship and triggered fires. The stricken tin can was then engaged by 6 X PT who hammered their target with 5 shell hits and another 2 torpedoes that sent the ship to the bottom.

79 miles W of Nagasaki the SS Swordfish eluded 4 X PC that were hunting her.

131 miles W of Sasebo the SS Halibut hit a DD with 2 fish for heavy damage and fires. The other 2 DDs then located and attacked the sub.

Near Muntok the SS Dorado hit an AK with a torpedo that started fires and did heavy damage to the ship. The 4 PGs escorting the victim tried, but couldn't find the sub.

16 miles N of Muntok the SS Pomfret attacked 4 X PG and hit one of them with a torpedo that inflicted heavy damage on the vessel. A little while later the sub attacked an already damaged AK, hitting it with a torpedo that caused the target to break up and sink.

Mutanchiang's airfield was hit first by 29 X Pe-2 (2 downed, 9 damaged) and 32 X Tu-2S (1 downed, 7 damaged) and then by 6 X Tu-2S (2 damaged). There was moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions and very heavy casualties.

Harbin had it's airfield attacked by 86 X Pe-2 (4 damaged), 92 X Tu-2S (1 downed) and 60 X Yak-3 for extremely heavy airfield damage, many secondary explosions and negligible personnel losses. The IJA 11th Division was pounced on by 73 X Tu-2S (7 damaged) for heavy losses. The Russians had light casualties from the Japanese artillery and the Japanese took very heavy casualties from the Russian shellings of their positions.

Tavoy was struck by 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed, 8 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II for moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were extremely light.

Palembang had 17 X Frank flying when 21 X Liberator VI arrived. The fighters made a single, half hearted pass at the bombers getting 4 planes damaged. 5 Liberators were damaged from all causes and they did light port damage, hit a fuel storage tank and the CL Jintsu was hit by a bomb. Not to far away an AK was hit by a torpedo that did heavy damage and triggered fires. The pair of Barracudas departed unharmed. Then all hell broke loose as 26 X Mosquito FB.VI (1 downed), 35 X Avenger II (4 damaged), 13 X Barracuda (6 damaged), 10 X Hellcat II, 20 X Corsair IV, 17 X Firefly, 29 Thunderbolt II, 9 X Spitfire VIII and 9 X P-47D arrived.

Japanese soldiers went into the water to avoid the carnage.

Soerabaja was visited by 8 X SB2C, 11 X TBF (2 downed, 1 damaged), 24 X TBM and 4 X F6F who in turn were intercepted by 6 Franks and 2 Tonys. The Japanese fighters never pressed home an attack and departed the scene. The airstrip was moderately damaged, 4 Graces were destroyed and troop losses were moderate.

At Malang the IJA shellings inflicted moderate losses on the Allies and the Allied barrages caused the Japanese moderate casualties.

At Changchun the Soviets had very heavy losses and the Japanese had moderate casualties from artillery duels.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had heavy losses from the Chinese artillery barrages.

Bill looks at the paperwork piled on his desk and proceeds to tackle it. He's thankful that most of it has been attended to by his exec, but some things require more than just his signature. He misses the feeling of motion that smaller ships give, but them again in a storm the tin can drivers have all they can do to keep their top heavy ships going. His mind drifts back to a hurricane that he went through and how they didn't have time to top off with fuel so they used sea water to lend stability to the ship. It was a ride that he could certainly do without again.

The doctors are debating if they should send Ed back to Pearl by plane or by ship and finally they agree on the speedy way. One of them mutters that they're passing the buck and that he's willing to bet that Ed ends up Stateside. His condition is not good and they feel that Ed needs better facilities and specialists that just aren't on Formosa.

18 miles N of Muntok the SS Dorado attacked an unescorted AK and hit it with a torpedo that caused fires and heavy damage. Later 2 X Mosquito FB.VI and 2 X P-47D attacked a lone AK, hitting it with 2 bombs that did heavy damage and ignited fires.

Hamamatsu was attacked by 141 X B-29 (2 damaged) and 39 X P-51D. A lone Zeke was flying and the Mustangs took care of it. The heavy industry took heavy damage.

Nagasaki was under a CAP of 23 X Frank when 47 X B-24J (1 downed, 11 damaged) and 85 X P-51D (1 downed) arrived. The Franks tried to avoid the Mustangs, but lost 6 planes and another was damaged. Moderate damage was done to the harbor facilities, there were many secondary explosions and the ships there were treated roughly.

Harbin was hammered by 92 X Pe-2, 97 X Tu-2S (1 damaged) and 60 X Yak-3 for extremely heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were moderate. The IJA 11th Division had heavy casualties from a pair of air attacks made on it. 3 P-63As were downed, 9 were damaged and 2 TU-2Ss were also damaged. The IJA 108th Division downed an attacking Tu-2S as it took heavy losses. The Russians had light casualties and the Japanese took very heavy losses in artillery exchanges.

Palembang was struck by 20 X Liberator VI (3 damaged) for light damage to the port, some secondary explosions were reported, the CL Jintsu was hit by a bomb and casualties were light.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division helplessly absorbed moderate losses from an Allied air strike.

About 248 miles SE of Tori Shima 91 X P-38J bombed and strafed an IJN DD scoring 65 shell hits and 5 bomb hits that did heavy damage and caused many fires to erupt. Suddenly, in a huge fireball the ship disintegrated. Then 5 Mitchells (2 damaged) and 5 Lightnings went after an IJN DD that they hit with 2 bombs that did heavy damage and caused fires.

Near Palembang Allied planes struck the Japanese ships.

A Barracuda was damaged in the attack. Then more planes arrived and they too tried hit the ships, but failed to harm any. Later another raid appeared and an Avenger II was damaged as an AK ate 2 fish that sent her to the bottom. More planes came on later, but failed to do any harm.

441 miles NE of Brunei 28 X PB4Y attacked the Japanese ships that had been detected.

Soerabaja was attacked by Allied planes and 7 Franks and a Tony made a feeble attempt to stop them losing 2 Franks before they ran. 2 TBMs were damaged by flak as the planes caused moderate airfield damage, destroyed 2 Graces and inflicted heavy troop losses.

Near Niigata 3 PB4Ys swept past 2 Franks who kept their distance from the bombers and the attack on an AP bore no fruit.

20 miles E of Jambi Allied planes swooped in on a pair of AKs, hitting 1 with a bomb that did heavy damage. Another strike was made on some PCs, but that failed to produce any favorable results. Then 8 X Barracuda (2 damaged) arrived and they hit a PC with 3 torpedoes that obliterated the craft. As the sun began to set the SS Pomfret hit an AK with 3 torpedoes that did catastrophic damage and ignited horrible fires that ended up sinking the ship.

Near Nagato the SS Bashaw played cat and mouse with a pair of IJN DDs. Neither side was able to harm the other.

At Malang artillery duels caused heavy Allied casualties and moderate Japanese losses.

At Changchun the Soviets took very heavy casualties from the Japanese artillery. The Japanese suffered heavy losses from the Soviet barrages.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillerymen busily pounded away at the Japanese inflicting very heavy casualties on them.

Patrol planes filed reports of many sinking ships from prior actions.

Stalin is pressing his generals about the Red Army being stalled in front of the Japanese defenses. He chides them to get things moving and when a general mentions the bad weather Stalin silences him by coughing.

Gil and the guys down their shots and trudge off for some chow. Already scuttlebutt has them resting for a big raid on a new target. Gil laughs when he hears it and says, “Does anyone here have any doubts about us going out on more missions? Resting is part of the cycle that they have us on because the planes need work. They really don't care about us so much other than they need us because we're trained and that gives us value. Hoppy lets out a low whistle and asks Gil what's eating him.

Sam can't believe the stink below decks. They're not allowed to wander about the ship so he just lies in his bunk having a smoke. One of the guys in the squad suggested to a guy with a bottom bunk that he would appreciate it if he would trade with the Sarge. They guy relented when the rest of the squad gave him dirty looks. Now Sam can manage Frankie easier. He can't believe that there are still some guys of the 25th Division still on Tori Shima. He's just glad to finally get off of that island. He hears a commotion and somebody is complaining about Franking relieving himself. One of the guys from the squad who was keeping an eye on the dog told the complainer that he stunk worse than the dog's dump and then proceeded to clean it up. Sam loves his squad and can't imagine having to go into battle without them. They always take care of one another and now they are taking care of the dog on a rotating basis. Sometimes Sam thinks about how much he'll miss them when this stinking war finally ends.

Combat

Numerous sighting reports and some claims of hits on APs and AKs in the Ominato area continue to pour in. A strike was made by 120 X B-24D (15 damaged) and 72 X P-38J and the airfield was very heavily damaged, a large number of secondary explosions were claimed, 3 Sally, 11 Franks, 3 Topsys, 7 Graces, 6 Peggys, 1 Dave, 8 Tinas and 3 Tabbys were destroyed and casualties were heavy. Another attack followed later on as 40 X B-24J (15 damaged), 12 X P-51D and 37 X P-38J added moderate damage to the airstrip, caused some more secondary explosions, trashed a Tabby and inflicted moderate personnel losses. 3 PB4Ys (1 damaged) hit a PC with a bomb that did heavy damage and started fires. Nearby 3 X PB4Y and 3 X B-25J hit an MSW with 5 bombs, sinking it. Allied planes clobbered some Japanese ships.

Another strike hit an AK with a bomb that did heavy damage and triggered a fire. The Allied planes continued to rove in the area hitting an AK with 2 bombs for heavy damage and fires. An AP was hit with 3 bombs for heavy damage and a raging blaze. An AK was heavily damaged and burning from a bomb hit.

13 miles E of Jambi the SS Dorado attacked a pair of PCs, hitting 1 with 2 torpedoes. Later the sub tried and failed to mount an attack on a DD, 2 PGs and 2 PCs. On the bright side the Japanese never knew she was there. In the afternoon the Dorado failed in an attempt on a PC. In the late afternoon the sub tried to attack a pair of PCs and failed to get into position as the PCs detected and hunted her.

At Maizuru 139 X B-29 ran into 7 X George, 35 X Jack and 17 X Tony. A George (4 damaged), 4 Jacks (26 damaged) and a Tony (10 damaged) were shot down and the Americans lost 9 Superforts to all causes and had 50 more damaged. Another strike followed a bit later as 139 X B-29 braved the reduced CAP of 4 Georges, 15 Jacks and 11 Tonys. A George (1 damaged), 5 Jacks (5 damaged) and 2 Tonys (5 damaged) were splashed and the Americans lost 4 bombers and 30 others were damaged. A third wave of 212 X B-29 was escorted by 36 X P-51D. 5 X George, 18 X Jack and 14 X Tony tried and failed to reach the bombers as they lost 4 Georges, 15 Jacks and 9 Tonys to the Mustangs. 3 Mustangs were shot down in the furball. 1 B-29 was lost and 26 were damaged by the intense AA fire. The Nakajima engine plant was subjected to extremely heavy damage in the raids.

Mutanchiang was hit by 18 X Tu-2S (4 damaged) and another strike was made by 9 X Tu-2S (1 downed, 2 damaged). Light airstrip damage, a couple secondary explosions were seen and casualties were very heavy from these attacks.

Harbin was pounded by 85 X Pe-2 (1 downed), 83 X Tu-2S and 61 X Yak-3 for extremely heavy airfield damage, a secondary explosion and extremely light troop losses. Russian planes attacked causing moderate casualties as they lost a P-63A (1 damaged) and a P-39Q (3 damaged). The IJA 11th Division was hit twice by Soviet planes for heavy losses as 3 Tu-2Ss were damaged. The IJA 108th Division managed to destroy 2 P-63As (17 damaged), 1 Tu-2S (3 damaged) and 3 P-39Qs were damaged in 3 air strikes. The unit had heavy casualties from these attacks. Then the IJA 127th Division was hit for heavy losses and 6 B-29s were damaged. The Russians had light casualties from the Japanese artillery. The Russians surged forwards and took some ground as both sides had extremely heavy losses in the battle.

Palembang was hit by Allied planes who caused moderate port damage, a secondary explosion was observed, a Frank was shot down and casualties were extremely light. A Liberator VI was damaged in the attack.

Kadina was blasted by 129 X B-24J for very heavy port damage, a huge number of secondary explosions were reported and casualties were moderate.

Naha was bombed by 45 X B-24D and 151 X B-24J for moderate airfield damage, very heavy port damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were moderate.

At Kweiyang the IJA 36th Division was hit by Chinese aircraft for heavy losses. A Mitchell was lost and 5 took damage in the attack.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was jumped by Allied planes. 5 Franks and 2 Tonys ran and 2 Helldivers took damage as the unit sustained light losses. The IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion was attacked a little later and this time the CAP didn't escape as 3 Franks and 2 Tonys were splashed. A TBM was damaged and an Avenger II was destroyed as the unit absorbed heavy casualties. An Allied attack stalled with the attackers having moderate losses and the Japanese light casualties.

At Changchun the Soviet 49th Rifle Corps was struck by 3 X Randy (2 damaged), 5 X Ann (2 downed, 1 damaged), 3 X Sonia (3 damaged) and 6 X Sally (3 downed). The unit had moderate losses. A Japanese artillery bombardment inflicted very heavy casualties on the Soviets. A Soviet assault on the Japanese positions failed with both sides absorbing extremely heavy losses.

18 miles N of Muntok Allied planes struck a couple of Japanese ships.

21 miles E of Jambi Allied planes struck a PC with 2 bombs for heavy damage and fires. Then another PC came under attack, but evaded the falling bombs.

139 miles E of Tori Shima Allied aircraft attacked an IJN DD, hitting it with a torpedo that sank the already damaged ship. A TBM was damaged.

Palembang was raided by 8 X Barracuda, 1 damaged, and no damage was done to the base. Another strike arrived and a fuel explosion was reported.

Balikpapan had it's port lightly damaged by 5 PB4Ys.

143 miles N of Jesselton 43 X PB4Y swooped in on some Japanese ships.

Stalin rages and issues orders for his troops to fall back to positions that they may winter in. He demands to know why this winter offensive is stalled.

The Lucky 11 can't believe their ears and then they start praying for rain. The mission was brutal with heavy losses and now they want to send they group out again on short rest, again.

Bill scans the horizon and is comforted knowing that his small TF has now joined up with a CVTF, making them a tough nut sailing around with a chip on their shoulder and looking for trouble.

Ed was placed on a medical flight to be transported back to Ulithi. From Ulithi he will be flown back to Pearl Harbor and then the doctors there will decide what to do with him. Ed is out of it most of the time and in extreme pain so the doctors have prescribed heavy doses of medication to kill the pain.

The transport brings Sam and Frankie ever closer to their destination. The smell on the transport is a mixture of sweat, tobacco and vomit. One of the guys comes back and asks Sam why the Navy calls it the head and Sam says that he doesn't know. “Anyway,” the man continues, “The head is backed up and things are going to get a lot worse in here before we get to where we're going.” Sam thanks him for the great news and announces that he's going for a walk. With that Sam whistles and Frankie comes at a run and the two of them head topside. During the days the men are allowed on the deck, but at night they are supposed to stay below and now a sailor tells Sam he can't come topside to which Sam tells him about the stench and that, “Unless you're going to shoot me you're not stopping me.” The sailor says OK, but that Sam can't smoke and the two of them talk while the sailor plays a bit with Frankie.

Molotov announced that Russia will soon have the A bomb.

Combat

In the Ominato area Japanese ships continue to be spotted and attacked by recon patrols.

Near Nagato a pair of IJN DDs attacked the SS Bashaw, but did no harm. Then 4 X PC showed up and the sub got clobbered. She will now try for a friendly port as she has very heavy systems damage and heavy flooding.

17 miles E of Jambi the SS Pomfret ambushed a PC and hit it with 2 torpedoes that blew the vessel apart. Later Allied planes attacked a pair of PCs, losing a Barracuda and another was damaged.

149 miles SW of Inch'on the SS Sterlet was lining up an attack on 4 DDs when they detected her and turned the tables on the sub. In the afternoon a CA and some DDs found and attacked her.

Kanazawa was struck by 48 X B-29 (3 damaged) and the bombers caused light damage to the Nakajima engine plant.

Tokyo was subjected to a fighter sweep made by 114 X P-51D who tore into 2 X Reppu, 3 X Shinden, 136 X Frank and 18 X Tony. 2 Reppus, 115 Franks and 17 Tonys were splashed at the cost of 30 Mustangs lost and 4 damaged.

Mutanchiang was hit twice by Soviet planes for light airfield damage and very heavy casualties. 12 X Tu-2S were damaged and another was destroyed.

Bangkok was attacked by Allied planes and the defenses downed 2 Mosquito FB.VI2 and damaged a dozen more. The airfield was moderately damaged, there were some secondary explosions reported and personnel losses were moderate. Then the Liberators arrived and 10 were damaged as they damaged the port very heavily, there were a very large number of secondary explosions claimed and casualties were heavy.

Palembang was raided by Allied aircraft and a Frank engaged them only to be shot down. 4 Liberators were damaged and the port was lightly damaged and a couple of secondary explosions were seen. In the afternoon another air attack produced a secondary explosion.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was pounced on by Allied planes for heavy losses. A Helldiver, a TBF and an Avenger II were damaged in the attack. Allied artillery accounted for light Japanese casualties.

At Changchun the Soviet 2nd Rifle Corps was jumped by Japanese planes resulting in the unit having negligible casualties. An Ann (1 damaged) and a Sally (2 damaged) were downed and a Randy and 2 Sonias were also damaged. Then the 7th Guards Mechanized Corps was attacked, but escaped harm. A Sally went down (1 damaged) and a Randy, 4 Anns and 2 Sonias were damaged. Then the 49th Rifle Corps was hit for light losses. An Ann was shot down (12 damaged) and 6 Randys, 5 Sonias and 2 Sallys were damaged. The Japanese artillery caused very heavy Soviet losses.

At Malang Japanese artillery barrages inflicted moderate casualties on the Allied forces. The Allied shelling of the Japanese positions caused heavy losses for the Japanese.

At Harbin the Russians had moderate losses from the Japanese artillery.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had very heavy casualties thanks to the Chinese artillery.

Ed was knocked out the entire flight from Formosa to Manila and then ultimately to Ulithi. The doctors and nurses on the plane were constantly keeping an eye on him.

Jay spent a day at the range and he chided Al about not being able to hit the broad side of a barn from the inside. Al told him that he saves himself for combat. The platoon sergeant didn't see things Al's way and told him that he'd get to march back to the range tomorrow and every day afterwards, with full combat gear, until he used his weapon in a proper manner.

Chris spent the day lazing around in the ready room with nothing to do. He wrote some letters and spent the rest of the time playing cards and shooting the breeze with the guys.

94 miles N of Niigata the SS Cobia stalked and attacked 3 PC, hitting one of them with 3 torpedoes that obliterated the vessel in a huge fireball.

Changchun was bombed by 54 X Tu-2S (4 downed, 10 damaged) and were opposed by 1 Frank and 12 Tonys (3 damaged). They did very light damage to the oil facilities. The 6th Guards Artillery Division was pounced by by Japanese planes for extremely light losses. 2 Anns and a Sonia were shot down and a Randy, 2 Anns, a Sonia and 2 Sallys were damaged. The 49th Rifle Corps was also hit by Japanese aircraft and had negligible casualties. 3 Anns (3 damaged) and a Sonia (4 damaged) were downed. Japanese artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Soviet troops.

Hakodate was attacked by 39 X B-24J (5 damaged), 62 X P-51D and 34 X P-38J (1 downed, 1 damaged). The escorts dealt with the 17 Tonys, splashing 15 of them. The Nakajima engine plant was lightly damaged.

Tokyo was raided by 180 X B-29 and the promised escorts never arrived. 2 X Reppu, 5 X Shinden, 90 X Frank and 5 X Tony tore into the bomber formations and then the AA defenses went to work. 34 Superforts were lost and 66 were damaged. A Shinden, 48 Franks and 2 Tonys were damaged and 13 Franks were shot down. Bombs were never dropped on target. Another wave of 94 X B-29 (22 downed, 50 damaged) arrived and ran the gauntlet doing very light damage to the Nakajima engine works. A Reppu and 11 Franks were destroyed and 3 Shindens, 25 Franks and 3 Tonys were damaged.

Harbin was attacked by Soviet planes and then another strike bored in. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were a couple of secondary explosions reported and casualties were moderate. While all of this was happening the IJA 11th Division was jumped twice for extremely light personnel losses and 3 P-63As were downed and 6 were damaged. Japanese artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Russians.

At Soerabaja the 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was subjected to heavy casualties from an air strike in which an Avenger II was damaged. The 2 Franks up ran for their lives rather than fight. The Allied artillery made noise, but did no harm to the Japanese.

At Malang the 4th Australian Division was attacked by Japanese planes and had heavy losses. The Allied artillery was ineffective and the Japanese rose out of their positions screaming “Banzai!” as they hurled themselves against the Allied lines. The Allied forces had heavy casualties as they mowed down the fanatic Japanese who absorbed extremely heavy losses for no useful purpose.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery pounded the Japanese lines for heavy casualties.

Much to the relief of the Lucky 11 they didn't fly today and the word was that the bombers that did hit Tokyo were chopped to pieces. Then they got more good news as their target for their mission scheduled for tomorrow was shifted from Tokyo to Toyama.

“So Gumma it is and let's hope that this thing works as they said it will,” says Harry. Tomorrow the first A bomb is scheduled to be used. “Forget Operations Thunder and Lightning and let's try and stop this damned war before Stalin grabs half of Asia.” So with these words the troops about to board transports for the invasion of Okinawa stand down.

Combat

162 miles S of Camranh Bay the SS Pipefish attacked an unescorted AK, hitting it with a torpedo that set it ablaze and caused heavy damage.

The SS Cobia, 88 miles NW of Niigata, was subjected to an extremely violent attack made by 3 X PC which sent her to a watery grave.

The SS Blackfish attacked a lone AK 71 miles SE of Saigon. She hit the target with a fish that caused a a huge explosion that sank the ship. A couple of hours later the sub struck another AK with 3 torpedoes that sent it to the bottom.

Toyama was bombed by 146 X B-29 who were greeted by 6 X Tony. A Tony was shot down and 4 others were damaged before they broke off. The AA fire was fairly light and inaccurate as it damaged 5 bombers. The heavy industry was moderately damaged.

Changchun was raided by 62 X Tu-2S and they were intercepted by 1 X Frank and 11 X Tony. A Tony was damaged and 4 X Tu-2S went down (9 damaged) from all causes. The oil facilities were lightly damaged. Japanese artillery inflicted heavy losses on the Soviets.

At Gili Gili the South Seas Det. Had heavy casualties from an air raid.

At Kweiyang the IJA 36th Division was jumped by Chinese planes for moderately heavy losses. 2 Mitchells were lost and 2 more were damaged. The IJA 62nd Division absorbed moderate casualties and the Chinese lost a Mitchell and 5 others were damaged in an air strike. The Chinese artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

Palembang was bombed by Allied planes who did light port damage, a few secondary explosions were reported, troop losses were light and the CL Jintsu was burning and was ravaged by yet another bomb hit on her twisted wreckage of a superstructure.

At Malang the Allies assaulted the Japanese defensive line and took a fair amount of ground while inflicting very heavy casualties on the defenders. The attackers also took very heavy losses.

At Soerabaja Allied artillery caused no harm to the Japanese.

“Mr. President the reason the attack was not made was due to problems loading the bomb onto the aircraft.” Truman sits there listening and the says, “Well at least nobody is making up lame excuses. Is the plane ready to go now?” he asks. The answer is yes. “Good,” says Harry who then adds, “Operation Thunder may proceed as planned. Start them loading. I want this war over and done with.”

The Palawan has orders to start loading supplies. This is not going to be a cargo mission as the loading orders are for an amphibious operation. Cookie and Red stare in disbelief as suddenly this place has come alive like they've never seen it before. Amphibious assault craft of all types load and then move off so another can take it's place. It like a well rehearsed ballet says Cookie.

The Lucky 11 have made it through another mission. 2 planes were write offs from damage and 1 was lost along with it's crew, that was from another BG though. Gil wonders if he'll ever be the same again as he was before he entered the Army. Very little bothers him now and even less makes him emotional.

Combat

23 miles SE of Saigon the SS Rock hunted an AK, which was hit by 2 torpedoes that ignited fires and did heavy damage to the ship. The Rock reloaded her tubes with the intent of finishing off her prey and 2 more torpedoes slammed into the hapless target, further battering her. The stubborn AK refused to go down so the Rock served up 2 more fish that finally did the ship in.

Near Saigon the SS Carp caught an AK all by itself and attacked, hitting it with 2 torpedoes that ignited fires and inflicted heavy damage on the target. Not to long after reloading her tubes the sub located another lone AK and hit it with 2 fish that did heavy damage and triggered fires. In the afternoon the SS Carp found another AK and 2 torpedoes struck home for heavy damage and fires. The sub's skipper was heard to remark that they were in a target rich environment. The sub's luck was stretched to the limit as she tried to attack an AK at sunset. This ship was being escorted by a DD and 2 PCs who located the sub and then they attacked her, but the Carp's luck held and she evaded harm.

The SS Jack was on patrol 19 miles S of Inch'on when she spotted and attacked an unescorted AP. 2 torpedoes struck the target which went down within minutes of the attack.

Gumma was swept by 56 X P-51D who tore into 3 X Zeke, 23 X Frank and 29 X Tony. The furball ended quickly with 2 Zekes, 22 Franks and 19 Tonys shot down at the cost of 3 Mustangs lost.

Changchun was attacked by 54 X Tu-2S (6 downed, 12 damaged) and they were intercepted by 1 X Frank (1 damaged) and 11 Tonys (2 damaged). The planes dropped their loads off target and limped home.

Hanoi was bombed by 151 X Liberator VI (1 damaged) and the AA fire was extremely light and inaccurate. The heavy industry absorbed extremely heavy damage.

Hakodate was attacked by 75 X B-25J (9 damaged) and 74 X P-38J. The escorts spotted and engaged 7 X Tony, splashing 6 of them. The Nakajima engine plant was lightly damaged.

Sendai was struck by 127 X B-24D (12 damaged) who caused moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Harbin was hit by 41 X Pe-2, 18 X Tu-2S and 54 X MiG-3 for very light airstrip damage and very light casualties.

Shanghai was raided by 93 X B-24J (6 damaged), 44 X B-29 (4 damaged) and 85 X P-51D who attacked the heavy industry. Then 79 X B-29 (1 damaged) and 116 X B-25J (4 damaged) arrived and they too hit the heavy industry. These attacks resulted in extremely heavy damage on the heavy industry.

Hong Kong was pounded by 117 X B-29 (1 downed, 6 damaged), 24 X P-51D and 21 X P-38J for moderate heavy industry damage.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division took moderate losses from an air attack.

At Soerabaja the 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was attacked by Allied planes who lost a TBM and had a Helldiver and an Avenger II damaged. The unit absorbed heavy casualties. At virtually the same time the 51st Heavy AA Battalion was also struck by Allied aircraft. A Helldiver was trailing smoke as it departed the area and the unit sustained moderately heavy losses. An Allied assault on the defenses failed to take any ground and both sides took heavy casualties.

At Kweiyang the IJA 59th Division took heavy casualties from an airstrike. The unit downed a Mitchell and damaged 6 others. The Chinese artillery inflicted heavy personnel losses on the Japanese.

At Naha the IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from an air attack. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped twice by Allied planes that resulted in the unit having heavy casualties.

At Changchun the Red Army's 3rd Guards Mechanized Corps was pounced on by Japanese planes for light losses. The Japanese lost an Ann and another Ann and a Randy were damaged in the action.

At Palembang and Allied air attack caused light port damage, a secondary explosion and very light casualties.

At Malang the Allied troops surged forward and broke through the Japanese defenses, taking the base. The Japanese had very heavy troop losses as did the Allied forces.

President Truman demands to know why the A bomb attack on Gumma didn't fly this time. “Sir the weather prevented the attack. The cloud cover over the target was to heavy for us to proceed. We need to be able to see the damage the bomb does.” Promises are made that if the weather holds in 2 days Gumma will be destroyed.

Ships continue to load and then move off as men, machines and supplies are loading in masses that Red and Cookie have never seen. They debate about starting a new pool about where the invasion will hit, but decide that there aren't enough places left that make sense. “Even the Japs must know that Okinawa is going to get hit sooner or later,” says Cookie.

Combat

Near Saigon the SS Rock attacked a lone AK, hitting it with 2 torpedoes that started fires and did heavy damage to the ship.

Aomori was raided by 36 X B-24J (3 damaged) and 22 X P-51D who did very light damage to the heavy industry.

Harbin was bombed by Soviet aircraft who caused very light damage to the heavy industry. Then another strike hit the airfield for moderate damage and a secondary explosion was seen.

Shanghai had heavy damage done to it's heavy industry from 2 air raids in which a Liberator was downed and 4 took damage and a Mitchell was lost and 7 others were damaged.

Hong Kong was attacked by Allied planes 4 times in which the Americans had 5 Superforts, 2 Mitchells damaged. The heavy industry was heavily damaged.

At Kweiyang the IJA 36th Division took moderate casualties and damaged 7 B-25Js in an air strike made on it. The IJA 69th Division downed a Mitchell and damaged 1 as it took light losses in the air attack. The Japanese had heavy casualties from the Chinese artillery barrages.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed moderate losses from and air attack.

At Naha the IJA 47th Division took moderate casualties from an air raid.

At the crossroads the 20th Chinese Corps was pounced on by 15 X Frances who inflicted extremely light losses on the unit.

Palembang had it's harbor lightly damaged and there were 2 fuel tank explosions seen. All of the Allied planes departed unscathed.

At Malang an Allied assault on the regrouping Japanese resulted in both sides having very heavy casualties and the Japanese were forced to pull back once again.

At Soerabaja Allied troops hit the Japanese fortifications managing no gains as they were repulsed with heavy troop losses. The Japanese defenders also lost heavily.

Slim is surprised that the 2nd Marine Division has no orders for movement, not even a peep about anything. Maybe they will be used in some other way, but still he's surprised.

Ed's condition continues to remain stable, but there is no improvement and this is worrying the doctors. He will be sent back to the States for treatment.

Bill stands on the bridge sipping on a mug of hot coffee. He hasn't been sleeping much lately and he knows that it's a must because he can't make the proper decisions if he's over tired. A few hours later he retired to his cabin where he wrote a letter to Sandy before turning in.

Elaine is feeling guilty as she saw the same guy again last night and they had a great time. He's supposed to come to the house soon and then they are going to take a walk together in Schenley Park. She misses Gil, but he's not here and she's lonely.

Status: offline 		I'm back home, but my notebook is murder to type with as the cursor seems to have a mind of it's own. Until I'm allowed on stairs the office is only a dream so the AAR will resume when I can sit at my desk. Hopefully this will happen in a couple of months.

I have managed to defeat the dancing cursor with a little program called Touch Freeze so I'll resume the AAR shortly.

I'm still confined to bed and my WIFI connection is extremely weak at this location in the house so the AAR is still on hold, but not forgotten.

Combat

Near Saigon the SS Pipefish hit a lone AK with a torpedo that caused heavy damage to the ship. Then the sub reloaded and continued to patrol the area. She detected, stalked and attacked a DD, striking it with 3 fish that caused catastrophic damage to the tin can thought to have been the DD Kasasagi. In the afternoon the Pipefish tried and failed to attack an unescorted AK. A short time later another AK crossed her path and the ship was punished for it as3 torpedoes slammed into the AK, killing it. All in all the skipper of the Pipefish was pleased with the day's results, but it's always the one that got away that he'll remember the most.

Gumma was swept by 86 X P-51D who took on 2 X Zeke, 27 X Frank and 19 X Tony. The furball was violent and over quickly with the Japanese suffering the loss of 2 Zekes, 13 Franks and 16 Tonys. There were 4 Mustangs downed and another damaged. The American fighters then departed the area, as ordered. They were to be far from Gumma before 10 AM, which struck the pilots as strange, but who is going to argue with orders? 3 Tonys detected a B-29, but they ignored it and continued on course to wherever they were heading to. The B-29 radioed in the weather conditions for Gumma while 2 other Superforts, called Super Dumbos, took up positions miles away to observe and to report in any downed Allied aircraft. Then came a B-29 with the Atomic Bomb. The drop went as planned as the bomber banked hard and clawed at the air for all of the speed it could muster. A short time later there was a tremendous explosion followed by a huge mushroom cloud.

Harbin underwent 2 air raids that resulted in moderately heavy airfield damage, a few secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were moderate. A Pe-2 (1 damaged) went down and a Tu-2S was also damaged in the attacks. The IJA 11th Division escaped harm and downed 2 P-63s in a wild air attack that witnessed the Russians not dropping any ordinance on target. The IJA 108th Division had light casualties from a raid made by 4 X P-63A (1 downed).

Hong Kong's defenses damaged 3 B-25Js as the airstrike caused light damage to the heavy industry.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division sustained extremely light losses from Allied planes.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment escaped harm from an Allied airstrike. The IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion wasn't as lucky as another raid inflicted moderately heavy casualties on the Japanese unit. Then the 137th IJNAF Base Force was attacked, but the Allied aircraft failed to do any harm and a TBM was damaged. Allied artillery barrages were responsible for moderate Japanese losses.

Near Inch'on the SS Jack hit an AP with 2 fish that did heavy damage and ignited fires.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese.

At Malang the Allies attacked the Japanese, pushing them back and inflicting very heavy casualties on them. The attackers had heavy losses.

An officer entered the hut and found the Lucky 11 just hanging out. They were told to report to operations immediately, prepared to fly. In the meantime Jake's Jalopy was ordered loaded with more fuel than she had ever carried before. It turned out that a special mission was to be flown and since the Lucky 11 were found they would fly it. During the briefing they were handed dark goggles and told that there would be a bright flash. They were told not to look at it. It seemed strange to the guys that a single B-29 was going to drop one bomb. While on station over Japan at the appointed hour there was a bright flash and a huge mushroom cloud. Of course all of the crew looked at the flash. Later they reported in on a downed Mustang and the pilot was picked up by a sub. On the long flight back to base their shock and horror melted away and by the time they landed they wanted one of these bombs put on every B-29 on hand. This way they could destroy Japan, ending the war and then they could go home.*

Judging from an increase of over 3000 points of strategic damage from this turn to the last it appears that the A bomb did some extremely heavy damage to Gumma.

Maizuru was being protected by a CAP of 1 X George, 19 X Jack and 8 X Tony who weren't in position to intercept a lone B-29 flying at high altitude when the city was attacked with an A bomb.*

Mutanchiang was hit by 40 X Pe-2 (3 downed, 23 damaged) and 30 X Tu-2S (4 damaged) who caused moderate airfield damage, there were some secondary explosions reported and casualties were very heavy.

Harbin was struck by 4 air attacks that inflicted heavy damage to the airfield, a few secondary explosions were seen and the heavy industry was moderately damaged. 5 X Tu-2S and a B-24D were damaged in the attacks.

Soochow was struck by Allied aircraft and a B-29 was downed and 4 were damaged as they did very light damage to the heavy industry.

Changsha was bombed by Allied planes who wrought very heavy damage to the heavy industry.

At Soerabaja the IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion had moderate losses from a couple of air strikes made on it in which a Liberator VI, a Helldiver and a TBF were damaged with the loss of a TBF. The 137th IJNAF Base Force downed a Liberator VI and damaged another as the unit took extremely light casualties in the attack. The IJA 1st Parachute Regiment had very light losses from an air strike made on it. Allied artillery caused light Japanese casualties.

The 6th Chinese Cavalry Corps, 143 miles SE of Chungking, was hit by 3 Zeros and 23 Judys for moderate losses. The Chinese planes assigned to protect the unit didn't show up. This is a constant as when there is a LRCAP flown the Japanese don't attack and when there is no fighter protection the raids come.

Near Hakodate a Tony ran when 4 X A-26B and 44 X P-38J arrived. The Invaders tried and failed to harm an AK.

Tavoy was attacked by Allied aircraft and 6 Mosquito FB.VIs were damaged, there were some secondary explosions and the Japanese had negligible casualties.

The Mighty Mo drops anchor and almost immediately barges approach to refuel her and the New Jersey. Bill issues some orders and tells his exec to make sure that the crew's mail goes ashore right away.

Red and Cookie stand at the rail looking in awe at the ships. Soon it'll be time to sail for their destination. All they know is that this will be the largest amphibious invasion force the world has ever seen, to date. Red mentions that 2 battleships have just dropped anchor nearby and that they look huge and more powerful than anything he's ever seen. Cookie stares at them and agrees, but both of them know it's the carriers that are packing the punch in this war.

Pete is daydreaming as the lunch crowd is smaller than usual and he has much less to do. He's thinking back to his days as a member of the Pirates, all that happened to him and how he ended up here with a wife and daughter. He smiles and wonders if he really deserves to be so lucky to be where he is when so many died.

Mutanchiang was hit by 24 X Pe-2 (1 downed, 7 damaged) and 31 X Tu-2S (1 downed, 3 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, a few secondary explosions were reported and casualties were placed at very heavy.

Harbin underwent repeated air strikes today that resulted in heavy airfield damage, some secondary explosions and negligible personnel losses. The Allies had 2 X Tu-2S and 1 X B-24J damaged in the attacks. The IJA 11th Division was pounced on twice by Allied aircraft for heavy casualties. 14 X P-63A and 4 X P-39Q were damaged in the attacks. The IJA 108th Division took moderate losses and damaged 1 P-63A and 4 P-39Qs.

Near Niigata 10 X Frank were on patrol when they intercepted an inbound raid of 3 X PB4Y. Both sides escaped harm as the fighters never pressed home an attack and the bombers hit an AP with a bomb that triggered a fire. Another raid of 3 PB4Ys appeared and this time the Franks managed to damage 3 of them and the PC went unscathed.

14 miles N of Muntok 2 X Barracuda attacked a PG, hitting it with a torpedo that did heavy damage and ignited a raging blaze.

Near Palembang an Allied air attack struck the Japanese shipping.

AK Miho Maru 3 torpedo hits, sunk
PG Nishho Maru 9 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage

Near Hakodate a Tony bravely threw itself at 4 X PB4Y, 8 X A-26B and 58 X P-38J. The Japanese fighter was unceremoniously destroyed and the AK was hammered by 8 bomb hits that left the ship shattered and sinking.

23 miles S of Mentawi Island 9 X Lily, 2 X Emily and 7 X Randy ran into 35 X Corsair IV in their vain attempt to hit the Allied ships. All of the Japanese planes were shot down and 5 Corsairs took damage. Another attack was made by 6 X Lily and 3 X Randy and they too were all splashed at the cost of 2 damaged Corsairs. Once more the ships were never under direct threat.

At Tavoy a Mosquito FB.VI was damaged in a raid that failed to do any harm to the Japanese.

At Palembang an Allied air raid suffered 3 Mosquito FB.VIs and 1 Barracuda damaged as it caused moderate damage to the port, scored some secondary explosions, inflicted extremely light casualties and the CL Jintsu absorbed another bomb hit to it's already twisted shell and she continued to burn.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery caused heavy Japanese losses.

At Malang an Allied assault witnessed both sides taking very heavy casualties and the Japanese were pushed back a little bit more.

At Soerabaja the Allied forces surged forward and managed to take a little ground as they had very heavy losses and the Japanese took heavy casualties.

Gil drops out of Jake's Jalopy and climbs onto the waiting truck for a ride to the debriefing. He's in a heated discussion with other members of the crew as to why they are still using the same old bombs on the Japanese when there's something so much better to be had.

Red sits at his radio hearing nothing. Cookie busily is whipping up another meal for the crew. The Palawan is loaded, but here they are, anchored.

Bill stands on the bridge wondering when sailing orders will be issued as more warships leave the anchorage.

“Caught up with the tracker report on Gumma. It seems that Manpower was at 16 before the attack and then fell to (2) x (9). So a loss of 5 Manpower. There are plenty of aircraft factories in Gumma. Most were not affected but the following factories did take damage and considerable damage at that. Franks 108 down to (50) x 8, Reppu 120 down to (50) x 20 and Myrt 23 down to (11) x 5. So it does appear that there is some effect that you have to dig for and probably explains the VPs..... still not quite the mass damage you would have expected.”

Combat

A PBM near the Hiroshima spotted and attacked an AK, claiming a hit.

A PBM near Kagoshima attacked a sub and reported hitting it.

The SS Permit was attacked by a PC 72 miles NW of Niigata, but she gave the enemy the slip before any harm was done. A little latter 2 PCs popped up and they managed to pin down the sub's location and attacked her. This time the Permit wasn't quite a lucky as before. Although the sub has light systems damage from the attack her skipper decides to press on with the mission of mining Kitakyushu.

Shimuzu was bombed by 81 X B-29 and 4 X Frank and 3 X Tony made a single run at them and then the flak opened up. 3 Franks and 2 Tonys were damaged by the bomber's defensive fire and a big silver bird was shot down, 4 others were damaged from all causes. The Nakajima engine works was moderately damaged.

Hakodate was raided by 65 X B-25J (4 damaged) and 72 X P-38J for light damage to the Nakajima engine plant.

Harbin was attacked 4 times by Allied aircraft and 2 X Tu-2S, 1 X Pe-2 and 6 X B-24J were damaged in the strikes. The airfield was subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were some secondary explosions seen and casualties were very light. The IJA 11th Division took heavy losses from 2 air attacks in which a P-39Q went down and 9 others were damaged along with 10 damaged P-63As. The IJA 123rd Division had moderate casualties from an air raid and 5 X P-63A were damaged.

81 miles SW of Singapore 20 X Mosquito FB.VI attacked the Japanese ships.

Palembang was hit by Allied planes for a couple of secondary explosions and ships in the harbor also caught it.

Near Niigata 13 X Frank were on patrol and they intercepted 6 X PB4Y. 3 Franks were damaged and 2 bombers were also damaged as they failed to harm the 2 AKs that they attacked.

An Allied assault on the Japanese positions near Malang resulted in the Japanese being pushed back a little more and both sides had very heavy casualties.

At Soerabaja the Allied assault on the defenses failed to make a dent in the Japanese positions, but they did cause the Japanese very heavy losses as the attackers had heavy casualties of their own.

As the ships plod to the East Red has a bad feeling about being where the action is, Cookie contends that at least they're no longer sitting around with little to do. “I want to see this war over and done with so we can go about our business,” he says.

Gil sighs as he rises from his cot. He just finished reading a letter from Elaine that was more of the same, complaining about the war that just drags on. He wonders to himself if the people at home have the slightest idea of what the war is really like. He then reminds himself that he's lucky to be fighting it in the air and not be some unlucky slob in the infantry. The stories he's heard about the subhuman conditions they're forced to deal with in combat are sobering, to say the least.

Bill is antsy as this sitting around waiting for orders is driving him nuts when the largest naval force in history is heading into harm's way and here he is commanding one of the most powerful battle wagons afloat, doing nothing.

Congratulations to you and your opponent on taking this game as far (and as hard) as you have.  And, for you to have kept up this infromative, well-written AAR for so long, is -- admirable, amazing, (I'm running out of adjectives, and I'm not even into the B's yet).

About those personal vignettes in the AAR...
I'm an old guy.  When I was a child, the 30 to 45 year old adults were those WWII veterans.  You have consistently, accurately, and honestly conveyed what those folks told us - this is how they talked and thought (well, what they allowed for public consumption.)  In a way, it's a great social history of what the ordinary population of the US was like at that time.
I know I'm preaching here, but if anyone reading this was born after 1965 -- if you read this AAR, then you do get an accurate sense of what those people (WWII generation from the USA) thought, felt and said.   It really does put the enormity of their accomplishments in perspective - ordinary people doing extraordinary things, time and time again.

Thanks for this AAR.

Combat

In the Kagoshima area a PBM Mariner attacked an IJN sub, claiming a hit. A few hours later another PBM attacked what was thought to have been another sub in the area. The report included a claimed hit. Other claims of attacks and hits poured in throughout the day from many other PBMs operating in this area.

Gumma was attacked by 121 X B-24D and 1 X Zeke, 38 X Frank and 15 X Tony tore into the bomber boxes. A Zeke, 31 Franks (3 downed) and 7 Tonys (4 downed) were damaged and then the flak opened up. 21 Liberators were shot down and 48 were damaged. The bombers did manage to lightly damage the Nakajima engine plant.

Hakodate was hit by 54 X B-25J and 72 X P-38J and the defenses were not alert enough to respond. The Nakajima engine factory was lightly damaged.

Nagoya was struck by 141 X B-29 and 13 X Frank and 7 X Tony attacked them. 3 Franks (7 damaged) and a Tony (3 damaged) were shot down and a Superfort was lost and 20 were damaged by all causes. Another strike was made by 31 X B-29 and 7 Franks and 6 Tonys made a halfhearted pass on the big silver birds in which a Tony was damaged. The AA fire damaged 4 bombers. The Nakajima engine works took heavy damage.

Harbin was attacked twice for moderate airfield damage and 4 X Tu-2S and 1 X B-24J were damaged.

Hong Kong was hit by Allied planes and 2 Mitchells were damaged. The heavy industry suffered moderate damage in the attack.

At Naha the IJA 47th Division was attacked by Allied aircraft 2 times for heavy casualties. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade had negligible losses from an air raid.

Palembang was pelted by Allied air power for a couple of secondary explosions, but all facilities went unharmed. A Mosquito FB.VI was damaged.

At Kweiyang the Japanese sustained heavy casualties from the Chinese artillery attacks.

Sam relaxes, playing with Frankie, with the rest of his squad. Formosa is far and away a better place to be than Tori Shima ever was. Though the place took a battering in the fighting the people has rebounded quickly and with the help of the Americans some normalcy has been returned to life. Hell, he thinks, I can even go out and pay for food and something to drink here. Things are looking up, but he knows that soon enough the 25th Division will be called upon to fight and he has a sneaking suspicion that that won't be to far in the future.

Slim's lads returned from a day at the range and then they were turned loose. Most of them are tired, but the prospect of being able to latch onto some beers drives them onwards.

Elaine has given this lots of thought and she hasn't mentioned it to anybody in her family or circle of friends. She sits down and writes to Gil, it's a Dear John letter.

Combat

SBDs made several attacks on what was suspected to have been the same sub 144 miles NW of the Amami Group. Late in the day an oil slick was seen.

A PBM Mariner spotted and attacked an AK about 29 miles NW of Matsue, claiming a hit.

A naval bombardment of Naha that inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese was made by the USN. The IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses from an air attack made on it by 126 X SBD, 78 X SB2C, 143 X TBF, 128 X TBM and 16 X F6F Hellcat. The IJA 47th Division was jumped 3 times by Allied planes and the unit took heavy casualties. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on twice by Allied aircraft for light losses. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade had extremely light casualties from an air attack made on it.

Toyama was bombed by 185 X B-29 who were intercepted by 14 X Frank and a Tony. The fighters made a determined attack and then the flak kicked in. All told 2 B-29s were lost and 12 were damaged. The Japanese had 3 Franks shot down and 8 damaged and a Tony was also damaged while the heavy industry had heavy damage.

Hanoi was hammered by 155 X Liberator VI and the AA fire damaged 4 of them while they made their runs that resulted in moderately heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Hakodate was hit by 28 X B-24J (4 damaged) and 48 X P-38J for light damage to the Nakajima engine plant.

Nagoya was raided by 168 X B-29 and the CAP of 14 X Frank and 4 X Tony did their best to make the Americans suffer. 2 Franks (7 damaged) and a Tony (2 damaged) were shot down. There were 2 big silver birds lost and 17 damaged to all causes. The Mitsubishi engine factory was moderately damaged.

Mutanchiang was struck by 24 X Tu-2S (7 damaged) for moderate airfield damage, a few secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were heavy.

Harbin was hit twice by the Russians who had a Tu-2S damaged. The airfield was very heavily damaged, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were negligible. The IJA 11th Division had light losses and 10 P-63As were damaged in an air strike. The IJA 123rd Division had light casualties and the Russians suffered 7 P-63As damaged in an air strike.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was attacked by Allied planes a couple of times and the unit absorbed light casualties. A TBM was damaged in the attacks. The IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion took light losses in 3 air strikes in which 3 Liberator VIs and a PB4Y were damaged. The 137th IJNAF Base Force was attacked by 2 TBMs and 7 FM-2s and both sides went unscathed. The Allied artillery caused light casualties for the Japanese.

Near Niigata 3 PB4Ys hit an AP with a bomb that triggered a fire and then 8 Franks appeared and damaged a bomber as they were departing. A little later 3 X PB4Y turned up and 6 X Frank jumped them, damaging a pair of bombers who failed to hit the lucky PC.

Slowly, but surely, the Palawan plods along maintaining her position in the convoy. There was no pool this time around as the popular consensus is that they're going to Okinawa or Japan. Red is apprehensive about literally sailing into the jaws of the enemy and Cookie does all he can to calm Red.

Stalin is less than pleased that his great offensive against the Japanese has failed and now it's his planes doing the fighting. His generals avoid him as much as possible.

Jim wonders when his unit will ship out and if it''l be the usual stuff of building airfields, ports and defenses. He's still a general gofer as he hasn't had much time in the unit, but they're teaching him how to operate the heavy equipment.

Combat

The area in and around Sakashima an SBD attacked a sub and reported hitting it. This was followed by many more sightings of subs in the area, attacks, claims of hits and sightings of oil slicks. On the day 3 confirmed kills were awarded.

A naval bombardment of Naha caused moderate airfield damage, devastating damage to the port, an absolutely huge number of secondary explosions and extremely heavy casualties. Another naval bombardment followed a couple of hours later and it did moderate damage to the airfield, extremely heavy damage to the port, a very large number of secondary explosions were reported and personnel losses were heavy. Both of these bombardment TFs were not subjected to any counter fire from the Japanese. The Allied forces commenced with their landings and they took extremely heavy casualties from the Japanese coastal batteries who hit some of the ships in the assault waves. The Japanese artillery hit Allied positions, but did no harm and counter battery fire caused heavy Japanese losses.

Near Nagato the SS Cachalot was hunted by 4 X PC, who failed to pin the sub's location.

Changchun was hit by Russian planes who lost 2 X Tu-2S and had 13 more take damage as they damaged 4 Tonys out of the CAP of 1 Frank and 13 Tonys. The strike caused light damage to the airfield, destroyed a Babs and inflicted moderate Japanese casualties.

Hong Kong was raided by Allied planes and 2 Mitchells were damaged. The heavy industry sustained moderate damage.

Kadina was struck by Allied bombers twice and the port had very heavy damage, there were an extremely large number of secondary explosions and troop losses were light.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties from an air attack.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment damaged an Avenger II in an air strike made on it in which the unit had negligible losses. The 137th IJNAF Base Force took negligible casualties and 2 TBMs were damaged in an air strike. Allied artillery struck for moderate Japanese losses.

The IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade had light losses from an air strike made on it. The IJA 47th Division was hit twice by Allied planes for moderate casualties. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed moderate losses from Allied aircraft which attacked it 2 times.

Palembang had light port damage, many secondary explosions and the CL Jintsu was hit by 6 bombs. She finally succumbed to the horrific damage done to her. 2 Mosquito FB.VIs were shot down and a Barracuda was damaged in the attack.

At Kweiyang the Japanese took heavy casualties from the Chinese artillery.

At Malang Allied artillery bombardments caused moderate Japanese losses.

The O'Bannon sailed from Takao as part of an ASW TF that will try and combat the surge of Japanese subs between Formosa and Okinawa.

Gil posts a letter to Elaine in which he tells her of his hopes for the future. He then joins the guys for chow after which they swing by the ball field and watch a game while they shoot the breeze.

“Naha, it's Naha that we're going to,” says Red to Cookie. “I knew that Okinawa was it.” Cookie thinks that if this doesn't end the war then an invasion of Japan itself is next. He sighs and spits over the rail.

Jay and Al sit quietly when suddenly Jay says, “When all of this is over I'm going to find a quiet place to live where I never have to lift a finger against anyone ever again.” Al looks at him and says that he understands, but for him maybe he's found a home in the Army.

Combat

The waters around the Okinawa area were swarming with IJN subs. There were so many sub sightings, hit claims and oil slicks that the USN brass was stunned into a state of alarm. 6 kills were awarded today.

Allied troops continued to land at Naha taking heavy casualties. An IJN sub slipped into the landing area, but was detected, pounded and killed. A naval bombardment produced moderate airfield damage, moderate port damage, many secondary explosions were seen and casualties were heavy. The IJA 51st Ind. Mixed Brigade was subjected to 2 air attacks in which the unit had heavy losses. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit by Allied aircraft twice for heavy casualties. 23 X Irving and 9 X Frank dared to challenge the LRCAP over Naha and 268 X F6F, 145 X FM-2 and 16 X F4F-4 downed them all at the cost of a damaged Hellcat. Then 3 X Irving tried to get at the ships in the landing area and paid the ultimate price. At around noon 89 X Grace, 9 X Betty and 3 X Frances tried running the gauntlet and all but 4 Graces were splashed and 10 Hellcats were damaged. Another 8 X Grace tried a little later and they were all destroyed. Then 15 X Nick appeared and they too were shot down. In the late afternoon an IJN sub was detected and attacked with many hits being claimed. Counter battery fire caused moderate Japanese casualties.

A naval bombardment of Soerabaja caused moderate airfield damage, awful devastation to the port, many secondary explosions were observed and personnel losses were very heavy. Then Allied planes appeared and 3 X Liberator VI were damaged by the flak. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port took very heavy damage, there were many secondary explosions claimed and casualties were light. An air raid in the afternoon did moderate damage to the port and a secondary explosion was seen. Allied artillery barrages caused moderate Japanese losses. Japanese transport flights were intercepted by Allied fighters.

At Harbin the IJA 11th Division had extremely light casualties and a P-63A and 8 X P-39Q were damaged (3 downed). The IJA 123rd Division downed a P-39Q and damaged 4 others and also damaged 3 P-63As as it took moderate losses.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed light losses from and air raid.

At Malang the 2nd Base Force was attacked by Allied planes and both sides escaped harm. The 15th Base Force wasn't as lucky, though their casualties from an air strike were extremely light. The IJA 28th Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses from 2 air attacks in which the unit managed to damage a TBM and 3 Avenger IIs. The Allied big guns dished out heavy Japanese losses.

Palembang was hit by an air attack that caused moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions, 5 destroyed Tinas and very light troop losses. A Mosquito FB.VI was damaged in the raid.

At Kweiyang the Japanese took heavy casualties from the Chinese artillery.

President Truman is keeping an eye out for any and all reports related to the landings at Naha. When a cable from London is handed to him he looks at it and says that Java has consumed all of the American forces that it's going to get and the Brits along with their CW forces will have to make do with what they've got.

Cookie watches planes passing overhead and listens to the not so distant rumble of the ship's guns and wonders how the Japanese can survive such a horrible pounding. Red later remarks that the airwaves were so cluttered that he had a hard time monitoring what was going on.

Combat

In the area surrounding Okinawa there were many sightings of IJN submarines, reports of attacks, claims of hits and oil slicks spotted. A kill was awarded today as a sub breached and then dove to the bottom.

16 miles S of Ishieak an LCI(R) was hit by 2 torpedoes launched by an IJN sub and the craft went down quickly.

Soerabaja was shelled by the RN who did moderate damage to the airstrip and port while inflicting moderately heavy casualties on the troops. The 2nd Base Force was struck twice by Allied planes for negligible casualties and a TBM was damaged. The 15th Base Force was jumped 2 times by Allied aircraft resulting in the unit having moderate losses. A pair of TBMs took damage in the attacks. The IJA 28th Ind. Mixed Brigade took negligible casualties from an air strike. An air raid in the late afternoon added light port damage and negligible Japanese personnel losses. The Allied artillery rained death down on the Japanese to the tune of moderately heavy casualties.

Nanning was swept by 12 X P-40N who tried to engage 4 X Reppu, 2 X Nick and 3 X Tony, but the Japanese refused to give battle.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division took light personnel losses from an air raid.

At Kweiyang the IJA 59th Division had heavy casualties from an air strike in which 4 Mitchells were shot down and 7 damaged. The IJA 69th Division had moderately heavy losses and 2 Mitchells were damaged in a strike on the LCU. Chinese artillery barrages caused very heavy Japanese casualties.

At Naha the IJA 47th Division absorbed moderate casualties from an air raid. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade was hammered 2 times for very heavy losses. Japanese artillery caused no harm to the Allied forces and they took heavy casualties from the counter battery fire. The Allied troops surged forwards and pushed the Japanese out of their defensive positions and then the attackers rolled up the line, taking the base. The Japanese had extremely heavy troop losses and a Grace was destroyed. The Allies took very heavy casualties in the fight. The Japanese forces retreated towards Kadina, as expected. Now phase 2 of Operation Thunder will swing into action.

Palembang's defenses damaged a Mosquito FB.VI the the Allied planes struck for moderate airfield damage, a couple of secondary explosions were reported, 5 Tinas were destroyed and casualties were placed at very light. Another strike in the afternoon added very light damage to the airstrip, a secondary explosion was observed, a Tina and a Tabby were trashed and troop losses were very light.

Pontianak was hit by 6 X PB4Y who targeted an AK, hitting it with a bomb that caused heavy damage and fires to break out.

Near Niigata 4 PB4Ys went after a PC who avoided being hit by wild maneuvers and 13 Franks (2 damaged) chased the Allied bombers away, killing 1.

At Malang an Allied assault on the Japanese positions caused both sides very heavy casualties and little if any ground was gained.

Chris is dog tired from flying a CAP mission in the morning and then again in the afternoon. In between he ate, used the head and was spotted on deck ready to launch within minutes. He had a great view of the massive fleet below him, but no Japanese planes were about. That's OK with him as his job is to protect the fleet and no attackers makes things simple.

Palawan has commenced unloading as a swarm of lighters busily handle ships that the port facilities can't accommodate. Red has his feet up and listening to music on the radio when Cookie shows up and says, “Lucky has done it again. I turned my back for a minute and the dog wolfed down a couple of pounds of meat. I honestly don´t know where he puts it all and then not 10 minutes ago he was back at the galley looking for his normal feeding. The dog is a bottomless pit and has a watch to let him know when it's time for the next meal.” Red laughs and asks if Cookie fed him his normal meal and Cookie replied, sheepishly, “I gave him some, but not all.” They both laughed and strolled over to the ship´s rail and watched what looked like confusion all around them. Both of them knew from experience that a well choreographed drill was being executed to unload the ships.

Combat

There were a large number of sub sightings in the area surrounding Okinawa and it's approaches. Some of these reports included claims of hits and some sightings of oil slicks came in too. A couple of kills were awarded.

About 32 miles N of Sakashima the escorts of some LSTs drove off a sub.

An IJN sub, 20 miles S of Naha, tried to attack some USN ships, but it became the hunted after being detected and some hits were claimed. Later in the day an IJN sub tried to line up an attack, but an ASW TF pounced on it and claimed some hits. After losing the sub it was reacquired and a kill was awarded after the escorts gave it a horrific pounding..

Tokyo had a gaggle of 3 X Reppu, 8 X Shinden, 154 X Frank and 5 X Tony aloft when 73 X P-51D slashed into it. The furball produced a death machine as 1 Reppu (1 damaged), 3 Shindens, 105 Franks and 4 Tonys were blasted from the sky. The Americans lost 30 Mustangs and 4 more were damaged.

Nanning was swept by 12 X P-40N who encountered 4 X Reppu, 2 X Nick and 3 X Tony. The Japanese refused to fight though a Tony was downed and a Warhawk was lost in the running skirmish.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division escaped harm as the Allied planes dropped their bombs off the mark.

At Soerabaja the IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion was pounded by Allied planes for moderate losses. A Helldiver, a TBF and a TBM were damaged in the attack. Allied artillery inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese.

At Kadina the IJA 47th Division was struck by Allied planes for moderate casualties. The IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade took very heavy losses from 3 air attacks.

With Naha in the bag Allied follow on troops land and some begin the overland trek to Kadina, where the Japanese will need to be rooted out. The American commanders decided to sacrifice time instead of lives with another amphibious operation.

Red is stunned that the Palawan has finished unloading already and will sail soon bound for Formosa. Cookie is whistling and when Red asks why he's so happy and Red says that the war will end soon. “We're going to survive to be rich old men,” Cookie said.

Stalin is raging at his assembled generals and screams, “The Americans Americans are moving quickly while we are stuck in place. This is not an acceptable situation. I want this stalemate broken.” When a general timidly suggests that the weather is the problem and that in the Spring they would crush the Japanese Stalin ordered his security people to remove the man. As he was leaving Stalin ordered him stripped of all rank and privileges. “Let that be a reminder that the Rodina doesn't need excuses, just results.

Combat

Djokjakarta was occupied by the Allies.

The sightings of IJN subs, claims of hits and spotting of oil slicks continues to flow into Allied HQs as the Japanese seem to still be flooding the area around Okinawa with their submarines. 4 kills were given over the course of the day.

An ASW attack 27 miles SE of Ishieak was made by 6 USN DDs on an IJN sub and claims of many hits were made. A short time later, not to far away, 5 American tin cans attacked what was thought to have been the same sub. Some hits were reported and a kill was awarded. In the afternoon the DD Hammann was hunting for subs with 5 other destroyers when suddenly 2 torpedoes impacted against her starboard side, breaking her back and sending her to the bottom. The sub was located and viciously attacked with a large number of hits claimed. A little later, after having lost contact with the sub, the hunters reacquired their prey and scored more hits.

Tokyo had 2 X Reppu, 9 X Shinden, 89 X Frank and 3 X Tony up when 19 X P-51D arrived. The Japanese put up a fight and lost 3 Shindens (1 damaged), 29 Franks (2 damaged) and 2 Tonys against the Americans suffering 9 Mustangs downed and another damaged.

Shanghai was subjected to 2 air raids, the first of which was made by 138 X B-29. The second attack was comprised of 32 X B-29, 76 X B-24J and 88 X P-38J. 8 B-29s and 6 B-24Js were damaged by the AA fire in the attacks and the repair shipyard was ravaged for extremely heavy damage.

Nanning was swept by 12 X P-40N who were confronted by 7 X Reppu, 2 X Nick and 4 X Tony. A Warhawk was lost in the fight that nobody seemed to want.

Bangkok was bashed by 145 X Liberator VI (2 downed, 11 damaged) for heavy damage to the heavy industry.

At Kweiyang the IJA 36th Division was struck by 12 X B-25J for moderate casualties. The IJA 62nd Division suffered heavy losses at the hands of 47 X B-25J and 36 X P-40N. The Chinese artillery inflicted very heavy casualties on the Japanese troops.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division took moderate losses from an air strike.

At Soerabaja the IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment was hit by Allied planes for moderate casualties. A Helldiver and a TBF were damaged in the action. The IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion had moderate losses from being jumped by Allied planes. Another strike in the afternoon caused light damage to the port and 2 X PB4Y were damaged. The Allies threw artillery shells at the Japanese defenders throughout the day that resulted in heavy casualties being sustained by the Japanese.

At Malang the IJA 5th Division escaped harm from Allied planes who dropped off target. The 2nd Base Force was hit for very light casualties in another air attack. The IJA 28th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced on by aircraft who inflicted moderate losses on the unit. The Allied artillery caused moderate casualties for the Japanese.

Tavoy was struck by 48 X Mosquito FB.VI (5 damaged) and 13 X Thunderbolt II for light port damage and many secondary explosions were reported.

Palembang was bombed by the Allies who had a Mosquito FB.VI damaged. The airfield was moderately damaged, the port was lightly damaged, a couple of secondary explosions were seen and 2 Tabbys were destroyed. Another strike arrived a few hours later that did light damage to the port, triggered a secondary explosion and hit the ships there.

President Truman reads the reports and listens to more news from Okinawa and is as surprised as everyone else at how fast the Japanese defenses collapsed at Naha. A Major makes mention of the massive use of air power and naval bombardment prior to the landings that were of overwhelming strength. We threw everything we had at them, including the kitchen sink. The assault forces are now resting and refitting as they will be tasked as part of the initial assault on Japan itself while other units that are fresh are moving on Kadina. They will follow to Japan at a later date.

Slim now has the latest word and that's the 2nd Marine Division will spearhead the invasion of Japan. He shakes his head knowing that after Okinawa any fool could guess what would come next. This is going to be an awful blood letting, he thinks.

Sam sits talking with other NCOs from the company and they all agree that the 25th Infantry Division will be bound for Japan. One of them remarks, “That is unless somebody is dumb enough to want to go to China.” Another volunteered, “Or Korea.” Sam asked where that was and they grabbed a map and now he knows.

Combat

The waters around Okinawa continued to provide many sub sightings, though it appears to be lessening as the Allied ASW efforts have been deadly.

A naval bombardment of Batavia by the RN caused moderate damage to the port, negligible damage to the airstrip and negligible casualties. Allied planes added moderate airfield damage and a secondary explosion later in the day.

Hakodate was bombed by 125 X B-24D (2 damaged) and 66 X P-38J for moderate damage done to the Nakajima engine plant.

Shanghai was attacked by 142 X B-29, B-24J (3 damaged) and 86 X P-51D who then departed and another strike of 121 X B-29 arrived (6 damaged) who went about their deadly business and left. A third attack was made by 179 X B-29 (1 downed, 4 damaged), 24 X P-51D and 79 X P-38J. The airfield took extremely heavy damage, the port was also subjected to extremely heavy damage, there were a huge number of secondary explosions claimed (many of which were fuel explosions), 1 Peggy was destroyed, personnel losses were light and the vessels in the port were clobbered.

If the weather allows the Lucky 11 will be attacking the ship repair yard at Okayama tomorrow. Of course the guys are less than thrilled with this news. They have also heard scuttlebutt that a bomb group stationed on Guam has been sent to a newly won airfield at Okinawa. “Why couldn't we go there instead of this mission,” asks Gil. “I'll bet that there's fighters that will be escorting them all over Japan. Damn it all to hell, it's business as usual and there's no end in sight to this war no matter what we do.” The guys agree.

Chris can't believe that here they are cruising around so close to Japan and other than 1 day there have been no attempts made to attack the ships by air. The pilots in the squadron debate if the Japanese are almost out of planes or that they're saving them. “Maybe there's nobody left to fly them,' adds another pilot.

Jay is shocked that Al managed to get himself thrown in the stockade. There's a prissy new officer who caught Al stealing some booze from the Officer's Club while he was assigned to help clean the place. It was just built and now it's got it's first victim. Jay supposes that Al got off lightly as he's got himself 2 weeks inside, probably because he never got out of the OC. Jay maintained at the court that he was just moving the stock to make it possible to do a good job. The board didn't buy it, but as nothing ever left the premises they went easy on him while still making an example of him.

Butter rationing ended today in the United States, leaving only sugar still being rationed.

Now that's overkill! (I don't think a WWII submarine would have still been in existence after a dozen hits or so.)
