Yo Erik, week's almost up. Just thought I'd let you know.

Well, to be fair, he didn't say which planet's weeks he was working to

Wow, really? Nothing? It's Friday and just a week before May and YOU STILL HAVEN'T ANNOUNCED MORE?

Matrix, your advertising sucks. Distant Worlds deserves better.

I'm not really that mad or in "need of calming" ;) I just want better for Distant Worlds and it sucks to see us back here, yet again. It's annoying and DW and Elliot deserve better.

So, yeah, I'll calm my tits. Won't let it get to me anymore. I just needed to voice my extreme displeasure with this approach.

But why?

I'm probably just as excited about DW Universe as you, and I want to know more about what's going on. I've even been playing the game with a Word document alongside in which I'm noting down all the things I want to mod in order to turn this from a bloody good game into a damn near perfect game (for me).

But my main point is this: there is so much in the computer gaming industry that sucks; there's TW Rome 2 (which I wasted my money on); there's X Rebirth (which I wasted my money on); there's Darks Souls 2 and its claim to provide a playable mouse and keyboard experience (which I didn't waste my money on). There's Legends of Pegasus, FFS! (which, thankfully, I didn't waste my money on).

And yet, you're complaining about a lack of information about DW Universe, which is not yet taking any money off you whatsoever. You can't buy Universe yet. You can't throw your money away on it. And I'm still hoping they'll provide enough information about the game before release for everyone to reach an educated view on whether it's worth throwing their money on the game.

Be patient. It will come to you. In the computer gaming industry there are far more worthy targets of your vitriol than Matrix.

Well, actually it's now saturday and if I'm not mistaken then we're something like 12 hours from being a full week off of when Erik said more info was coming, which I think is cutting it a bit close.

And I have to say that the marketing push for Universe just doesn't appear to be that heavy yet, which I think is a bit of a shame since a single package with all the DW content actually ought to be a reasonably competitive product despite the "old" 2d graphics and a relatively high price. There's a hell of a lot of depth and playtime in this game and it's amazingly stable as well. But the lack of pushing almost makes me think we're about to see another launch delay.

Perhaps as you get older (as in my case), it just matter less. It's funny really, because you'd expect it to be the other way around.

Edit: ok, that was a bit of a dumb post, because obviously we're all getting older, but my point is that I'm probably rather older than most of the rest of you.

Are you saying we ought to call you Gramps, Ossie?

Anyway, I don't disagree that age can bring about a bit more perspective. When I was young, certain things felt like the damn end of the world. The wrong people winning elections, "losing" an argument, or someone skipping ahead in a queue. Now that I'm an old fart at 29, those things just don't piss me off as much as they used to.

Just celebrated being 29 for the 29th consecutive year. So yes age does render many issues into minor inconveniences at worst, and no longer world ending issues. Yet, I am finding myself becoming less tolerant of fools and foolishness.

On Topic, though, as much as I want a finished and polished product; The palpable aura of silence surrounding Universe is becoming disconcerting.

I'm upset at the marketing. It's like they don't want people to buy this game. Advertisements should be everywhere, websites should be doing previews, it should be available on many different distribution sites, etc.

It's just frustrating to see a great product and almost NO ONE knows about it. Every time this genre is brought up in a major forum, there are many people that have never heard of Distant Worlds. It just doesn't get "put out there" like it should.

And not releasing any information even just a couple weeks out is in line with that piss-poor marketing strategy and I just think this game deserves more players, more spotlight, more avenues to purchase it from and more exposure.

It's like Matrix couldn't be bothered.

While on the one hand I entirely agree that DW:U isn't that important in the grand scheme of life and even if it never sees the light of day I will still lead a full and happy life. On the other hand I will agree that it is a shambles how it has been marketed, also it seems society has undergone a radical shift in regards to success and failure that causes me to side with those who are angry about the state of affairs over DW:U.

It wasn't all that long ago where folks would make bold claims as to what they were going to do, how, and when and they would then proceed in said task. If they succeeded they were lauded, if they failed then commiserations were offered. However for those who made bold claims and then not only failed to deliver but did so in a manner that was opaque at best and often downright shady, only ridicule and resentment awaited. I personally have no problem with this sort of thing as it means boys who cry wolf do indeed get eaten thereby making the village stronger as a whole.

I could be incorrect but I believe Matrix Games is a Publisher & Distributor and nothing else. This means they really only have three tasks to perform. Sales, Public Relations, and the growth of developers under their wing. Anyone who has ever worked in any commission only form of sales job will have likely heard "you are only as good as your last sale". In short no one cares what you will do next week and your words mean nothing if you cannot back them up with proven actions.

With this axiom in mind and taking the first idea to hand then the strategy of Matrix and DW:U becomes at best unfathomable and at worst downright kindergarten in it's quality. I have been highly critical of this before using words such as incompetent and dishonest, for this a forum mod suggested I was out of line. I do not know if forum mods are direct Matrix employees or not, but as an endorsed representative of the company on a public forum I regard all mods as part of the Matrix Games structure. As such this seems like a firm taking a personal dislike of an attack on a company and it's procedures as if I had directly insulted a named member of the company.

quote:

The simple facts of the entire DW:U are as follows.

1. Distant worlds is probably one of the best selling games for Matrix, I have not been able to find sales figures and do not believe Matrix publish their sales figures (Do not understand why the need to hide such information but another issue). This is based on observing DW to be the third ranking in forum topic numbers for an individual title series. The only two higher are WITP & WITE.

2. Distant worlds is one of if not the most expensive title in Matris Games library at this time. The total cost for ownership of the entire DW series is £65.66 for a digital edition. Other title series do go above this but many of them include stand alone games unlike DW which is made up of expansions requiring the previous to play.

3. There have been (I guess because I am loosing the will to actually verify) less than 10 official posts about DW:U and it has been put out to the larger gaming community of review sites in a zero capacity. The following sites all posted pretty much the same vague information (neoseeker, worthplaying, gamershell, spacegamejunkie, spacesector) on the 13/03/14. These all stated the release date of may '14. Note this is actually the pushed back date from the original one of March '14. This delay was also not notified until a few folks began posting regarding where DW:U was and it was finally admitted to being delayed on 03/04/14.

So if we for a moment put aside all possible issues where the developer was unable to spot a problem and notify Matrix Games of the issue until the 11th hour (a situation I refute on the basis of the developers past performances which have been exellent from the very beginning as such they have gained a large amount of credibility.) then you only have a couple of possible outcomes left logically. Either the information was held back intentionally for reasons we will never know, or someone dropped the ball and made an error in professional judgment (many of us call this incompetence as it fits pretty well into the definition of the term despite folks personal feelings of attack). Since Matrix Games has demonstrated that it (as a company not persons and feelings) does not seem to like to offer up bountiful amounts of information to it's customers then the company cannot complain when said customers decide to pick the only other option. If your actions look bad and you do not try to explain them I will assume they are bad by fact of it is more likely the case.

Take all of this into account with the first two points about how much of a cash cow the Distant Worlds series has been for Matrix Games and it seems like madness boardering on insanity to be taking this course of action. A huge majority of the players and modders of DW on this forum have praised the developers countless times for the sheer quality and potential of the title. Almost all of them I will wager would love to see a DW2 and more from this developer. But right now the sheer incompetence of Matrix Games is potentially harming those chances by not giving the developer the audience they deserve for their work. Since this is the only distribution method for DW then the title is stuck in a void at present. This could also be why many folks are clamouring at things such as a Steam or other distributor release, while I understand this could harm the potential profits of Matrix Games, it seems a little underhand at best to dissuade threads where folks become vocal in their dislike/like of such methods. Intended or not it comes across as a petty attempt to keep a monopoly over the DW series.

If Matrix Games have noticed falling sales in this title and are thinking of shelving it that's fine, but hand off the baton and let someone else try. If that is not the case then someone start doing their job properly the company only really has to do one thing well and it cannot even manage that. If this were the apprentice then Matrix Games would of been thrown out after the first fruit selling round.

Hi everyone,

The announcement didn't make this week's schedule, but I'll post something here today to keep my promise.

I think dialing things down a notch in terms of frustration would be appreciated. I realize you guys want to see more happening, but I do not have control over the marketing schedule, I only know that DWU will be promoted before release. Among the things we've been working on is a major international game press event that starts in two weeks where DWU will be one of the featured titles. There will also be a big announcement relating to DWU at that event, if not before.

We also have some AARs and a review of the new modding capabilities from one of our testers/modders in the works and we do plan on releasing the modding guide in whole or part before the release to help explain the new modding features.

Regards,

- Erik

Just for good measure, Erik, I feel like stressing that I'm pretty sure nobody is actually blaming you directly, but you're the "face" we have access to and so you probably get to take more than your fair share of the frustrations some people have. And of course they're a bit frustrated. Some more than a bit, obviously.

I think the main problem is that it's so easy to get the feeling that absolutely nothing is happening. We know nothing about what's going on aside from when you're telling us, we don't know the specifics of Universe even though it was supposed to be released in March, and we're not really seeing you gentlemen at Matrix buzz around frantically. In your end, I'm sure you're not just slacking off and spending office hours eating pizza and browsing porn, but we're not seeing it. All we're seeing is a lot of static and silence, and I'm sure you know what that's like.

Suppose your computer had an entirely black screen during the entire booting process and all you had to rely on to know that your OS hadn't crashed were a few beeps here and there? Suppose your OS was doing some updating and HDD repair work without telling you and all you had was that black screen. Wouldn't that stress you out just ever so slightly, making you fear that your OS had crashed?

Aside from this, I personally think the information you're releasing sounds nice. I'm just not the most patient of men, I'm afraid, so the sooner it comes out, the happier I'll be.

I assume you mean the Home of Wargamers Event. As this is the wrong genre for DW and you are expecting the press to come to you rather than getting on the front foot, do you really expect this will create more awareness than the status quo?

I read this yesterday and keep wondering why no one from Codeforce/Matrix has had similar opportunities with a site as big as PC Gamer? I consider DW gameplay and immersion to be far superior than Endless Space and Stardrive combined and I'm starting feel that Distant Worlds really is being held back somehow.

http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/04/25/interview-endless-space-and-stardrive-developers-talk-about-4x-design/

Maybe Elliot was invited to be part of this and declined?

Guessing won't get you anywhere.

Matrix does their own thing and in their own world they can do no wrong.

It's pointless to suggest or ask them to do more because, simply put, they will not.

If you are frustrated or upset with their lackluster performance the best thing to do is to vote with your wallet and stop buying any Matrix titles.

If you are okay with what Matrix is doing then continue to buy Matrix titles and support the development of these games.

It's really that simple.

Over time they will either increase their customer base or they will lose it. Personally, I check in periodically with what's going on because it's fascinating to see.

Hi everyone,

The announcement didn't make this week's schedule, but I'll post something here today to keep my promise.

Which I think in most journalistic situations means someone missed a deadline they were given? I would hope that a title that has garnered this amount of popularity and revenue for this firm wasn't handed out to a single person who may have been suffering some issues that could effect their work. Either way this wasn't a game breaking issue to delay launch but as stated above an issue where an announcement about the title couldn't be posted somewhere. Somehow a few lines of text and perhaps a picture or two were not available to use before the proverbial run to print took place. Most industries would call that a lack of competence on the part of whomever was responsible.

quote:

Interesting bit of public relations fluff and odd to think that folks should not get frustrated. The very reason for the frustration has never been mentioned by anyone as being "we want our game now" or "you said it would be ready on tuesday why do we have to wait until friday?" Just about all of the anger around DW:U has been over a total blackout of any kind of information, not just about the title but simple courteous things such as. "hi guys we just found out this morning there is problems with the title it won't be out until May" That never took place, instead lots of folks had keyboard fits of anger until finally it was simply dropped in the middle of a thread. While you may not control the marketing of the title I am sure you have some form of contact with that department and it really isn't rocket science to ask them why there has been a delay or why nothing is being sent out. Then reword it in a nice diplomatic company way for the customers your company is asking cash from.

I also hope the HOWG event is not the one being hinted at (why hinting again is this the MIB???). I have noticed that Matrix Games are listed as one of the publishers showing titles there yet also struggle to see how it is that beneficial to the title considering it's genre and the overall event genre. A cynical person could guess that since Matrix Games are already there showing titles is could of cost them almost nothing to squeeze in DW:U in addition, thereby trying to get some free press about it. However I would never suggest that even though there is no evidence to contradict such a theory and the past few months have done nothing to instil confidence in the company's ability to market a title effectively.

However as this event is in two weeks and DW:U is currently still slated for a May release then it leaves a total of 3 weeks before it hits the shelves. As every other DW title has been released in a boxed version I will guess DW:U will too. Thus it must absolutely be in a near finished form and at the very worst case it has to be playable with perhaps a few minor bugs. To suggest otherwise would probably mean the developer working night and day non stop to make the deadline. So if this is the case then how would throwing out an extra large handful of copies to review sites not be more effective and better value for money than putting up a DW:U stand somewhere and hoping the lucky leprechaun press happen to swing their cameras your way? Logic took a day off in the office on that one eh?

We also have some AARs and a review of the new modding capabilities from one of our testers/modders in the works and we do plan on releasing the modding guide in whole or part before the release to help explain the new modding features.

This is at least some genuine good news and some actual news at that, it is just tragic though that such news as this has had to be swamped in such a lot of other rubbish and bland statements that did nothing to inform folks. It also does confirm my above question regarding the state of the game. If a play tester was able to compile AAR's then I am pretty sure a professional reviewer could mash their way through to write a well balanced fair review also.

All in all I really see little here that does anything to sway my opinions of Matrix Games and their overall ability at the jobs they do. The gaming industry is a tough one no doubt, and PR probably tougher still. With the wonders of the net even tiny mistakes can garner such anger you would think someone drowned a bag of puppies. But that does not simply excuse any of it, this is an industry folks still wish they were in. It is also a job I would gamble each and every member of Matrix Games chose to do of free will. Thus if you are lucky enough to have a job you chose that others envy and you make a hash of it, don't come crying and ask folks to be nice to you because your feelings got hurt. Can't handle the heat get out of the kitchen and let someone in who can.

Quick edit for one point I forgot. Some folks have mentioned just vote with your wallet and in theory this works just fine. But it is not really going to do any harm to a multi title publisher. Sadly the biggest sufferer of that action is the game developer. We know DW:U is pretty much a one man show and that guy could rely on their income for DW for his/her entire family finances. That is a real shame as this shody work ethic is going to hurt them in the end, and it is the developer that we really all want to support.

Among the things we've been working on is a major international game press event that starts in two weeks where DWU will be one of the featured titles.

I assume you mean the Home of Wargamers Event. As this is the wrong genre for DW and you are expecting the press to come to you rather than getting on the front foot, do you really expect this will create more awareness than the status quo?

^ Agreed ^ Sounds like the wrong move.

Hell, I have no marketing experience, but I'll come lead the marketing avenue for you. I'm sure I could do a better job.

And this is why I think Elliot to find another publisher. Or hell, self publish on Steam when it moves to that. Matrix isn't right for him/DW anymore.

I respectfully disagree. You guys are jumping to all kinds of conclusions based on limited information. It's fair to criticize constructively and suggest a different approach, but this is getting over the top. First, there has not been a black hole of information. Universe has been announced, features posted with product page, press releases sent out with screenshots. There is information on what the release contains available to you.

In addition, for over a month now we've had preview copies out and available to the press, but we cannot force a preview to appear.

The "Home of Wargamers" event actually has a lot of mainstream press attending that love games just like DW and will give it good exposure and coverage. You should not assume that this event is focused on a niche audience. We're also promoting games like our upcoming Warhammer 40k release there.

We've supported DW from the start with more than most publishers would provide. We care about Elliot as well and want him to succeed as much as possible. I hope you will all be a bit more patient and determine how we've done in terms of raising awareness once DW Universe is actually released. I apologize for the delays with this release, but while some of that has been on the development side, some if it has also been specifically to allow more time for the marketing to happen as planned.

The best thing you all could do is to help us spread the word among your friends and fellow gamers if you want DW to succeed, rather than discussing boycotts because you disagree with the promotion to date.

Regards,

- Erik

Some screenshots that may be of interest, from our testing team. Some of these are included specifically because they show things that were not possible in previous versions of Distant Worlds.
