Combat

The SS Bluefish underwent an ASW attack about 147 miles E of Singapore made by 2 IJN DDs. With some systems damage and moderate flooding the sub is now going to make for port.

Allied troops unloaded over the beach at Merak taking heavy casualties.

Okayama was bombed by 42 X B-29 (1 downed, 2 damaged), 37 X B-24J (1 damaged), 37 X B-24D (1 downed, 3 damaged and 54 X P-38J. The Lightnings were busy taking care of the CAP of 14 X George, 25 X Frank, 3 X Tony and 6 X Randy in what turned into a real furball. 14 Georges, 14 Franks, 3 Tonys and 6 Randys were splashed was the big Allied fighters kept the Japanese planes away from the bombers at the cost of 5 Lightnings lost and another damaged. The AA fire was heavy and fairly accurate, but that didn't stop the bombs from raining their loads down on the target. Another raid followed and 22 Georges, 2 Randys and 1 Tony made a weak effort to stop the 111 X B-29, 82 X B-24J and 93 X P-51D. All of the Japanese planes were shot down and all of the Allied aircraft departed intact after doing their deadly work. A third wave of 75 X B-29 (3 damaged) came on and added to the carnage. The onslaught continued as 69 X B-29 (1 damaged) arrived and pounded the target. Finally the last of the raiders showed up and the 86 X B-29 (5 damaged) added to the woes of the Japanese. The damage done to the ship repair yard was devastatingly heavy as it was a smoldering ruin by the end of the day.

Nagoya had 15 X Frank and 9 X Tony flying when 186 X B-29 arrived. 6 Franks (3 damaged) and 1 Tony (4 damaged) were shot down as they ripped into the bomber formations. 4 Superforts were lost and 22 took damage from the fighters and the flak. The ship repair yard was lightly damaged.

Harbin's airfield was moderately damaged, a couple of secondary explosions erupted and personnel losses were light from an attack made by 66 X Tu-2S (2 damaged) and 61 X Yak-3.

Pontianak was visited by 9 X PB4Y who hit an AK with a bomb that did heavy damage and caused fires to break out.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had light casualties from an air strike.

At Kadina the IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade absorbed heavy losses from an air raid. The IJA 60th Ind. Mixed Brigade was tagged by Allied aircraft for moderate casualties. The IJA 64th Ind. Mixed Brigade was ripped for very heavy losses due to Allied planes.

At the crossroads the 20th Chinese Corps was struck by 11 X Frances for light casualties.

Near Kadina 8 X Jake and 2 X Frank ran afoul of 14 X F6F and 5 X P-38J who downed all of the Japanese planes. The Allied ships were never in any real danger.

At Nanning 15 X P-40N swept in and attacked 5 X Reppu, 2 X Nick and 3 X Tony. A Reppu, a Nick and a Tony were shot down and all of the Chinese planes returned home intact.

Tavoy underwent an air raid in which 4 Mosquito FB.VIs were damaged and there were some secondary explosions seen.

At Soerabaja 4 X PB4Y took damage as the port was lightly damaged and there were very light casualties. The Allied artillery inflicted heavy troop losses on the Japanese defenders.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had very heavy losses from the Chinese artillery barrages.

At Malang Allied artillery caused moderate Japanese casualties.

With another mission under their belts the Lucky 11 wearily leave the debriefing and head for some chow. With some food in him Gil flops onto his cot, but sleep won't come. He decides to write a letter to Elaine. Once he's done he puts his head on the pillow and dropped off to sleep.

Jay is in a state of shock as he listens to what is being said. When the officer finishes Jay proclaims that he had no idea what Al had been doing. “I knew nothing and had no part in it,” he said and continued, “Search my gear, you'll find only my stuff.” It seems that Al was gathering watches, rings and other small items of value from the men in his unit. Jay figures that it'll be a long time before Al gets his freedom.

“So until we board the ships nobody leaves the base for any reason without orders to do so.” With that the meeting breaks up and as usual the NCOs will spread the word. Slim knows that this'll make the lads an unhappy bunch. What he wants to know is where they will invade Japan.

Combat

Allied troops continued unloading over beach at Merak taking heavy casualties. After getting themselves organized the Allied force took the base against negligible opposition.

139 miles SE of Wenchow an IJN sub was attacked by an ASW TF and the DDs involved claimed some hits.

Kadina was bombarded by the USN and the Japanese took very heavy losses.

Nanning was swept by 12 X P-40N who dove into 4 X Reppu, 1 X Nick and 2 X Tony. 2 Warhawks were lost and the Japanese retired unscathed.

Ichang had a CAP of 3 X Zeke, 2 X George, 1 X Jack, 6 X Zero and 7 X Tony up when a fighter sweep arrived comprised of 12 X P-40N. A Zero was shot down and 8 Warhawks were destroyed and suddenly the fight was over with the Chinese running for home.

Palembang was raided by Allied planes and a Thunderbolt II was downed (2 damaged) as the port was lightly damaged, a secondary explosion was claimed, a Tabby was burning and casualties were light. Another strike a few hours later accomplished nothing.

Pontianak's port was lightly damaged by 9 marauding PB4Ys.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division sustained light losses in an air raid.

At Kweiyang the IJA 69th Division took moderate losses from an air strike. The IJA 65th Division was also struck by Chinese planes and the unit absorbed heavy casualties. The Japanese had very heavy losses from the Chinese artillery.

At Malang the IJA 71st Ind. Mixed Brigade was hammered by Allied planes for heavy troop losses. A Helldiver and a TBF were lost and 4 Helldivers and a TBM were damaged in the attack. The Allied big guns accounted for light Japanese casualties.

Osaka/Kobe was swept by 35 X P-51D and they mixed it up with 11 X Zeke, 4 X George, 19 X Jack, 5 X Zero, 6 X Frank, 7 X Tony and 4 X Randy. 3 Mustangs were shot down and 3 others were damaged as they shredded the Japanese for 8 Zekes, 4 Georges, 15 Jacks, 3 Zeros, 6 Franks, 6 Tonys and 2 Randys being splashed.

Batavia was visited by Allied planes who did light damage to the airfield, triggered a secondary explosion and inflicted negligible personnel losses on the Japanese.

Near Singapore the SS KXVI managed to flub an attack on a BB and 2 DDs.

At Djokjakarta the Japanese retook the base versus no Allied opposition.

Allied artillery barrages inflicted heavy losses on the Japanese defenders at Soerabaja.

The meeting at 10 Downing Street ended on a sour note because the American representative flatly stated that the United States would not now or in the foreseeable future have any more forces of any type to support any British operations. “Once Kadina falls we will be hitting Japan itself with an invasion and that will take every man, ship, tank and plane that we've got. President Truman does want you to know that forces currently fighting by your side will remain doing so,” and with the the envoy from the White House quietly sat down.

The Lucky 11 are busily discussing the bomb that they saw used on the Japanese and are wondering why more haven't been used and how the Japanese can possibly fight on after losing a city in the blink of an eye. Gil quietly mutters about their having to keep on flying missions in a war that never seems to end. The others agree and it's not just them, but the feeling is running rampant through the 20th Air Force.

Combat

A naval bombardment of Kadina produced moderate damage to the port, negligible damage to the airstrip, a couple of secondary explosions were observed and casualties were moderate. Then the Allied airplanes went to work hitting the port twice for extremely heavy damage, an extremely large number of secondary explosions were observed and troop losses were placed at heavy. The IJA 60th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bashed by USN planes for heavy casualties.

Takamatsu was swept by 33 X P-51D, but nobody was home.

Nagasaki was attacked by 163 X B-29, 12 damaged by the AA fire, 21 X P-51D and 20 X P-38J. As the bombers made their runs 32 X Frank made a feeble attempt to get at them and the Allied fighters shooed them away. 6 Franks were shot down and another was damaged in the skirmish and a Lightning was lost, 2 others were damaged. The ship repair yard was moderately damaged. In the afternoon 54 X P-51D chased 21 X Frank and managed to down 3 of them as the Japanese refused to fight.

Kitakyushu was struck by 121 X B-29 and 115 X P-38J and the repair shipyard was lightly damaged.

Osaka/Kobe sent 9 X Zeke, 2 X George, 6 X Jack, 5 X Zero and 2 X Tony to intercept 34 X B-29 (2 damaged), 89 X B-24J (1 downed, 7 damaged), 40 X B-24D (8 damaged) and 51 X P-38J. The Lightnings kept the Japanese fighters away from the bombers in a swirling furball that saw the Japanese suffer the loss of 9 Zeke, 2 Georges, 4 Jacks, 2 Zeros (1 damaged) and 2 Tonys. 3 Lightnings were destroyed and 2 took damage in the battle. The repair shipyard was moderately damaged.

Hiroshima/Kure was targeted by 127 X B-29 who were audaciously attacked by 4 Rufes. A Rufe went down and another was damaged before they gave up their futile mission. The ground fire claimed a Superfort and damaged 8 more as the repair shipyard was subjected to extremely light damage.

Sendai was hit by 117 X B-24D (2 damaged) and 55 X P-38J for moderate damage to the repair shipyard.

Aomori was raided by 66 X B-25J (1 damaged), 14 X A-26B and 46 X P-38J for light damage to the heavy industry.

Ominato had a CAP of 3 Rufes up when 67 Mustangs swooped in and splashed them at no cost to themselves.

Sapporo was roughed up by 179 X B-29 (1 downed, 4 damaged), 58 X B-24J (1 damaged), 18 X P-51D and 50 X P-38J for light damage to the repair shipyard.

Harbin was hit by 40 X Pe-2, 15 X Tu-2S (2 damaged) and 61 X MiG-3 for very light airfield damage.

Nanning was swept by 22 X P-51D and they chased the CAP of 4 X Reppu, 1 X Nick and 2 X Tony into the clouds. A Nick and a Tony were shot down and 2 Mustangs were lost and another damaged as the Reppus darted in and out of the clouds nipping at the American planes.

Hong Kong was attacked by 44 X PB4Y and the AA fire destroyed 1 and damaged 3 as the repair shipyard was lightly damaged.

Bangkok was visited by 159 X Liberator VI and the flak damaged 14 of them as they pounded the airfield for extremely heavy damage, there were a huge number of secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were very heavy. In the afternoon 46 X Mosquito FB.VI (7 damaged) and 10 X Thunderbolt II arrived and they caused light port damage, some secondary explosions were claimed and troop losses were very light.

At Kweiyang the IJA 35th Division took light casualties from an air raid. The IJA 65th Division had moderate losses from being bombed. The Chinese artillery inflicted heavy casualties on the Japanese.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division absorbed very light losses from an air strike.

At Djokjakarta the IJA 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed by 21 X F4U-1, 14 X Thunderbolt II and 13 X P-40N for moderate casualties.

The Soviet 39th Rifle Corps, 22 miles SE of Mutanchiang, was jumped by 13 X Ann, 12 X Sally, 15 X Randy and 8 X Zero. 7 X Yak-3 tore into the Japanese as they were leaving. Between the flak and Russian fighters the Japanese had 5 Ann (3 damaged), 1 Sally (7 damaged), 3 Randys (9 damaged) and 8 Zeros destroyed. 2 Yaks suffered damage.

Near Ominato 6 X PB4Y went after a CVL and a DD. A Liberator was knocked down and 3 were damaged. Their bombs failed to do any damage. In the afternoon a Rufe was on patrol 49 X B-24D (1 downed, 26 damaged), 5 X PB4Y (5 damaged), 37 X B-25J (2 downed, 9 damaged), 7 X A-26B (1 downed, 3 damaged) and 54 X P-38J arrived. The Rufe valiantly died and the ships were attacked.
BB Musashi 8 bomb hits, on fire
CVL Ibuki 3 bomb hits, on fire, heavy damage
The B-24Ds were on City attack orders and did so in the morning. This flaw in the game repeatedly occurs.

Soerabaja was raided by planes for light port damage, a secondary explosion and negligible casualties and a PB4Y was damaged. Moderate losses were absorbed by the Japanese thanks to the Allied artillery barrages.

At Malang the Japanese had negligible casualties from the Allied artillery.

After talking with Sarge Jay knows that he can forget about seeing Al again. It seems the stupid fool decided to get into a fight with 2 of the guards and then when everything seemed to be cooled down he attacked an officer. Jay wonders if it was worth it knowing that Al won't have to go into combat again.

Sam is concerned about Frankie and what he'll do with the pooch when the unit heads back into combat. He's already been told that he can't take the dog where he'll be going. Now Sam is trying to figure out who can keep the dog for him while he's unable to. As he's wandering around pondering his dilemma he runs into Jim, the Sea Bee he got to know on Tori Shima. As the 2 men get reacquainted Sam tells Jim about Frankie and the problem. Jim immediately says that he'll take the dog and take good care of him. “The only problem is that how will we ever find each other when this mess finally ends?” asks Jim. Sam says that they know one another's units and that should make it easy and then he added that he trusts Jim and that the dog could do worse than get stuck with him.

At Malang the Allied artillery inflicted extremely light casualties on the Japanese.

Sam and Jim are now making an effort to get together every day in order for Frankie to have an easy transition. It's killing Sam and he feels guilty that he cares about the dog more that almost all of the guys in his outfit. The thought of losing Frankie, even temporarily is gnawing at him and he's used to death from the combat. Go figure, he shrugs and continues playing with the dog and Jim.

Slim is relaxing with a warm beer when one of his lads offers to hop the brew up a bit. Slim laughs and says that he doesn't want to go blind and that he'll make the sorry SOB who gets drunk and hung over tomorrow wish for the Japanese.

Gene's team still hasn't managed to latch onto anything that shows real promise, but they're keeping at it. One guy was showing a bad attitude and Gene read him the riot act when they were alone to no avail. The guy was fired and he got a letter from his draft board. That being common knowledge helps to keep his team focused as the loss of a job like this insures employment in the military.

Palembang was hit by Allied planes for negligible airstrip damage and a Tabby was destroyed. A Mosquito FB.VI was damaged in the raid.

At Malang the Allied artillery inflicted negligible losses on the Japanese.

At Soerabaja the Allied artillery bombardment yielded heavy Japanese casualties.

An Allied assault on the Japanese defenses at Batavia took some ground. The Japanese had moderate losses and the Allied attackers absorbed very light casualties.

Sam learned that the 25th Division is finally all together in one place again. Now the question is what's to do here on Formosa that'll keep him occupied until they ship out. He's heard that a new operation is what his outfit is tagged for, but scuttlebutt being what it is, who knows. Everybody has the gut feeling that the target is Japan.

The guys are talking about what they heard today. Another bomb group has left Tinian for some base closer to Japan. “Do you think we'll ever get moved back Stateside?” asks Landy. They discuss it and finally Gil tells him that they're going to grow old here together. Then Landy asks, “So you think that this war will never end?” Brownie joins them and passes out everybody's mail that arrived in today's mail call. Gil is disappointed as he's been shut out again. He wonders why there's been no mail lately for him. Is it just a glitch in the delivery system or has Elaine stopped writing?

President Truman and his advisers conclude the meeting with the decision that the invasion of Japan will take place in the first week of January 1946. The target will be Kagoshima despite many pushing for Nagasaki.

Not even heavy fires?? Those Mosquitoes especially need to re-think their loadouts. Were the shell hits from the B-25J's?

A naval bombardment of Kadina caused moderate Japanese casualties. Then the port was hit by 133 X B-24J and 41 X PB4Y for heavy damage, an extremely large number of secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy. The IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped twice by Allied planes for very heavy casualties. The IJA 60th Ind. Mixed Brigade took moderate losses from an air strike.

Niigata was raided by 109 X B-24D and 45 X P-38J who were intercepted by 31 X Frank. The fighters engaged and the AA fire opened up on the bombers downing 2 and damaging 24. 11 Franks were splashed and 9 damaged at the cost of the loss of 5 Lightnings and 2 more damaged. The heavy industry was moderately damaged. Another strike made up of 104 X B-29 and 18 X P-51D arrive later and they were met by 15 X Frank. The flak damaged 3 bombers as they hit the naval shipyard for moderate damage. 11 Franks were shot down and the Mustangs rejoined the bombers for the trip home unscathed.

Nagasaki was attacked by 95 X B-24J, 86 X P-51D and 28 X P-38J and 20 X Frank that were on CAP turned tail and ran, loosing 2 planes. The ground fire shot down 2 Liberators and damaged 17 as the bombers worked over the port area for moderate damage, a few secondary explosions were claimed and ships in the harbor caught what for.

Harbin had it's airfield very heavily damaged by 79 X Pe-2 and 58 X Yak-3. Ground personnel took very light losses.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate casualties from being bombed.

Near the crossroads the 20th Chinese Corps was struck by 15 X Frances for moderate losses.

Near Singapore 3 PB4Ys were going after some ships when they were intercepted by 2 X Zeke, 6 X Oscar and 12 X Frank. Although the bombers escaped unharmed and they managed to damage a Frank they never made a run on the ships.

At Kweiyang the Japanese had heavy casualties from the Chinese artillery.

At Malang Allied artillery barrages resulted in light losses for the Japanese.

At Soerabaja the Japanese had moderate casualties from the Allied artillery.

At Batavia the Allied artillery made noise, but did no harm.

The Lucky 11 climbed aboard Jake's Jalopy and after going through all of their checks they started up the huge engines and slowly rolled into their position on the taxiway. When it's finally their turn to take off the plane effortlessly climbs into the air. It seems strange not to carry any bombs, but today they are being transferred to Naha on Okinawa. The flights over Japan promise to be much shorter in duration so they'll be carrying more bombs and less gas from now on. The bad part is that they'll be living in tents again as the engineers continue to expand the airfield and then the port will be next. Creature comforts are not high on the Army's list. Gil is upset because their mail will be slow to follow them to their new home.

Sam stands at the dock as the lighter takes Jay and Frankie out to the waiting ship. Jay's outfit is heading for Okinawa so with tears running down his cheeks Sam just stands there staring with an empty feeling. After he lost sight of them he regained his composure and decided to focus on whipping his boys into shape for their upcoming encounter with the Japanese.

About 270 miles SW of Los Angeles an IJN sub attempted an attack on a convoy, but was detected and attacked by the escorts who claimed some hits.

Near Balikpapan the SS Brill had it's dull patrol brightened when a BB thought to have been the Haruna and a DD appeared on the sub's radar. The Brill moved into a position to intercept and when the range had closed she fed the BB a pair of fish that did heavy damage and ignited fires. After reloading her tubes she spotted a CA thought to have been the Chokai, but failed to get in an attack. Later the Brill hunted a DD, but once again couldn't obtain a favorable position from which to launch her torpedoes. In the afternoon the Brill was hunted by the IJN, but they never got a fix on her. Later in the morning 32 X Frank and 3 X Tony greeted 20 X PB4Y who hit the Haruna with 5 bombs that added to her already heavy damage and fires. 4 Liberators were shot down, 6 damaged and the Japanese lost 2 Franks and 9 were damaged.

Hanoi was bombed by 88 X Liberator VI (3 damaged) who did moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Nagasaki had 18 X Frank up when 63 X B-24J and 84 X P-51D arrived. The Franks ran, but not before having 4 planes shot down and destroying a Mustang. The AA fire damaged 6 of the bombers who unloaded on the port area for moderate damage to the port facilities, some secondary explosions were observed and ships at anchor caught hell.

Hakodate was attacked by 30 X B-24J (1 downed, 5 damaged) and 12 X P-51D, but the target was missed.

Harbin's airfield was hit by 44 X Pe-2, 15 X Tu-2S (1 damaged) and 61 X MiG-3 for very light damage.

Kadina was attacked by Allied planes a couple of times today for extremely heavy airfield damage, heavy port damage, an extremely huge amount of secondary explosions were claimed and casualties were heavy. At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate losses by an air strike.

At Kweiyang the IJA 69th Division was pounced on by Chinese planes for heavy casualties. Chinese artillery caused very heavy Japanese losses.

At the crossroads the 20th Chinese Corps was attacked by 15 X Frances for moderate losses and then 14 X P-40N arrived, to late to accomplish anything.

Tokyo was swept by 34 X P-51D and they attacked the huge gaggle of Japanese planes consisting of 5 X Reppu, 8 X Shinden, 169 X Frank and 8 Tony who mixed it up with the Mustangs and had 1 Shinden, 52 Franks (3 damaged) and 6 Tonys splashed while they shot down 14 Mustangs and damaged 4.

Balikpapan was bombed by 29 X B-24J (1 downed), 40 X PB4Y (5 damaged) and 43 X P-38J. 20 X Frank and 3 X Tony tried to pierce the fighter escorts and lost 9 Franks (1 damaged) and 3 Tonys in exchange for 3 downed Lightnings. The port had light damage, there were some secondary explosions seen and personnel losses were heavy.

Near Merak 3 X Betty went after the Allied ships. 20 X P-47D shot 2 down and the third ran after missing with it's torpedo.

At Malang the Allied big guns accounted for negligible Japanese casualties.

At Soerabaja Allied artillery barrages inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese.

At Batavia Allied artillery made noise and accomplished nothing.

Gil lies on his cot staring at nothing, just into space. He's tired of the war and would like to sleep in a warm and comfortable bed. He misses Brooklyn and even more he misses Elaine. He looks at his watch and sees that it's 2:45 AM. He sighs and rolls onto his side.

Slim awakens to find himself in a bed with bandages on him and he's feeling nothing. A nurse comes by and he asks her where he is and she tells him that he's in the hospital and that in time he'll be good as new. When he asks how he got here she says that there was some kind of training accident. “I don't know the particulars, but I'll find out for you and tell you later. That OK?” He thanks her and lying there he begins to remember through the cloud of morphine. A training exercise with a couple of the new lads and there had been an explosion. He doesn't remember anything after that. He wonders what these new lads are being taught in training to be so raw that they don't even know the most basic of things that a rifleman needs to know if he's to survive.

Admiral Landy is getting the best of care Stateside, but his condition puzzles the doctors. One day he seems to be doing better and then suddenly he takes a turn for the worse. There's no overall improvement and the specialists are stumped.

Hess announced that he was faking insanity and amnesia.

* I noticed that this number was unchanged from the last turn despite Hanoi's heavy industry being bombed this turn. The deeper we get in time the more bugs I've been seeing.

Combat

A naval bombardment of Kadina caused negligible damage to the airstrip, light port damage and very heavy casualties. Two airstrikes caused moderate airfield damage, light port damage, a couple of secondary explosions and light losses.

Near Saigon the SS Sturgeon laid her mines and then hit an AK with 3 torpedoes. Though the ship was heavily damaged, listing, down by the bow and on fire she stayed afloat. In the afternoon the sub tried for a small convoy, but had the tables turned on her. Now with light systems damage and some flooding she will make for port and repairs.

Nagoya was attacked by 142 X B-29 who were intercepted by 3 X Frank and 7 X Tony who made a pass at the cost of a Frank (1 damaged) and a Tony (5 damaged) shot down. Then the AA opened up and 6 bombers were downed and 18 were damaged. The Nakajima engine plant was heavily damaged. A reformed CAP of 2 Franks and 6 Tonys attacked another wave of inbound bombers. 206 X B-29 had 2 planes destroyed and 5 damaged by the fighters and the flak. A Frank and a Tony were damaged in their half hearted run on the Superforts who caused heavy damage to the Mitsubishi engine factory.

Osaka/Kobe was bombed by 142 X B-29 and 2 X Jack and 3 X Zero bounced them. A Jack was damaged and 2 Zeros were downed. The ground fire was heavy and all told a B-29 was lost and 17 more were damaged as they devastated the Nakajima engine works.

Sendai was visited by 114 X B-24 and the AA brought 1 down and damaged 7 as they caused moderate damage to the heavy industry.

Harbin had it's airfield hit by 53 X Tu-2S (1 damaged) and 61 X Yak-3 for moderate damage and very light personnel losses.

Wuhan was swept by 21 X P-38J, but no Japanese planes were around.

Ichang was visited by 21 X P-51D who pounced on 5 X Zeke, 3 X George, 1 X Jack, 5 X Zero and 8 X Tony. The furball witnessed a Zeke, a George, 2 Zeros and a Tony (1 damaged) get shot down and 2 Mustangs went down and another was damaged.

Balikpapan was attacked by 28 X B-24J and 38 X P-38J who took care of the 10 Franks that tried to intercept the bombers without a loss of their own. The port was moderately damaged, there were a few secondary explosions seen and casualties were moderate.

Soerabaja damaged a Liberator VI in a raid that caused moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions and moderate troop losses. The IJA 8th Hvy Field Artillery Regiment took heavy casualties from an air strike in which 1 A-26B was destroyed and an Invader and a Mitchell were damaged. An Allied artillery bombardment attack resulted in heavy Japanese losses.

At Malang the 2nd Base Force damaged a TBM and took heavy losses from an air strike. The Allied artillery inflicted very light casualties on the Japanese.

At Gili Gili the IJA 59th Division had heavy casualties from it's daily air raid.

At Kweiyang the IJA 69th Division had moderate losses from 22 Chinese Mitchells. Chinese artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

At Djokakarta the 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade downed a Corsair and damaged 3 Jugs as the unit was bombed and strafed for moderate casualties.

At the crossroads the 90th Chinese Corps was attacked by 15 X Frances and 3 X Zero. Both sides escaped harm and questions were asked about the promised air cover that wasn't there.

At Batavia an Allied assault took some ground and the Japanese had heavy casualties while the attackers had extremely light losses.

The hunt for the BB Haruna has taken a new turn that has the RN and USN are alarmed as they have lost the IJN ships. The noose has tightened and they expect that no matter which way the battered ship goes they will catch her, but for now she has eluded the search.

Slim is feeling a bit better, but he's not happy to hear that his lads won't have him to lean on for the foreseeable future. The doctors have told him that he should have a full recovery, but it'll take time.

Much to Gil's surprise they got mail today. There was a letter from Elaine and after reading it he just walked away from the guys in silence. Gel an Donny noticed and caught up with him and asked what was wrong. Gil just handed the letter to Gel without saying a word. “Damn, it' a Dear John,” he tells Donny. The two of them ask if there's anything that they can do and Gil says that he just needs a little time alone and that he'll be OK.

Jim has learned fast that a dog on a ship presents problems, especially when it's crowded. He feels like he's spending all of his time following the dog around just to clean up after Frankie relieves himself. A couple of the guys are keeping him company at least and one of them remarked that the dog seemed to be a bladder on legs that never seemed to empty despite the dog peeing almost everywhere he went.

A naval bombardment of Kadina caused moderate casualties and then the ships retired. The IJA 53rd Ind. Mixed Brigade had heavy losses from Allied planes. The IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade was struck twice by Allied aircraft for heavy casualties. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade took very light losses from an air strike. The IJA 44th Ind. Mixed Brigade was jumped by planes for moderate casualties.

At the crossroads the 10th War Area was visited by an Ida who ran afoul of 14 X P-40N resulting in it going down in flames. A Dinah managed to escape a similar fate by hiding in the clouds.

Toyama was bombed by 138 X B-29 and 31 X Frank and 2 X Tony bounced them. 7 Franks were shot down and 17 damaged and then the AA fire took over. 11 B-29s were lost and 28 damaged as they inflicted moderate damage on the heavy industry.

Niigata was swept by 67 X P-51D and the 12 Franks on CAP were splashed at no cost to the Mustangs.

Nagoya had 7 X Frank and 6 X Tony aloft when 173 X B-29 arrived. A Frank (3 damaged) and a Tony (1 damaged) made a single pass on the Superforts who then faced the flak and all told 10 bombers were damaged. The heavy industry was blasted for extremely heavy damage.

Balikpapan was raided by Allied planes who did very heavy damage to the airfield, triggered many secondary explosions, 2 Franks and 2 Tabbys were trashed and personnel losses were negligible. A PB4Y and 4 B-24Js were damaged.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division took light casualties from an air strike.

At Soerabaja the IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion downed 1 Liberator VI, 2 TBMs (1 damaged) and 2 Invaders were damaged as the unit absorbed heavy losses. The IJA 71st Ind. Mixed Brigade damaged 2 TBMs and had moderate casualties. The Allied attack took some ground with the Japanese suffering very heavy losses and the attackers had heavy casualties.

At Batavia the 15th Aviation Rgt underwent an air raid that caused it moderately heavy casualties. The Allies attacked and brushed aside the Japanese forces, taking the base. The Japanese suffered heavy losses and retreated towards Bandoeng.

At Djokakarta the IJA 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade was bombed and strafed for moderate casualties.

About 19 miles W of the crossroads the 20th Chinese Corps was attacked by Japanese planes and the unit had moderate losses. Once again the promised fighter protection wasn't on hand.

88 miles SE of Banjarmasin 25 X TBF and 9 X F6F found and attacked the IJN ships that have been sought after. 3 Avengers were lost and 15 more were damaged.
BB Haruna 5 torpedo hits, sunk
CA Chokai 4 torpedo hits, on fire, heavy damage
Another strike made up of 26 X SB2C, 15 X TBM and 16 X F6F arrived, but hit nothing. In the late morning 24 X SB2C (1 downed, 6 damaged) and 14 X F6F attacked the CA Chokai and hit it with a bomb. The cruiser is a twisted wreck that is burning. In the afternoon 40 X SB2C, 6 X TBF, 11 X TBM and 37 X F6F arrived on the scene, but there was nothing found to attack.

Near Niigata 2 Franks faced 9 X PB4Y and 47 X P-38J and both of them were splashed. Then ships were attacked.
AP Tachi Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire
AP Keiyo Maru 1 bomb hit, on fire

At Kweiyang Chinese artillery dished out heavy losses to the Japanese.

At Malang the Allied artillery barrages caused light Japanese casualties.

Gil has been quiet since getting the letter from Elaine and the guys are worried about how he's taking it. “You know I really liked her dad,” he told Gel over breakfast. Gel told him that he'd get over it and that it's better to happen this way rather than later on. Gil answered with, “I guess.” He then continued on about the damned war.

Chris had the day off today and he listened quietly to other pilots talking about the horrible pounding Kadina has been taking. Chris pictures in his mind what he imagines it must be like to be on the receiving end of a bombardment by 14 and 16 inch shells. He then decides that it must be worse than he can imagine. These days there's not much for a fighter pilot to do except for staying alert, just in case.

Jim watches as Frankie chases after a rat and the suddenly, to his horror they both go flying overboard. Frankie chased the rat right off of the ship! He races to the rail and looks down only to see nothing. He feels awful and wonders what he'll tell Sam, if they ever see one another again.

Gil is still suffering about the loss of Elaine. He feels helpless being thousands of miles from her and that if he wasn't stuck here that he could right things. Gel tells him that if it weren't for the war he never would've been in Pittsburgh and never would've met her. Gil knows that Gel is right, but for now he just feels miserable.

Bill finishes another letter to Sandy and then heads to the bridge where he is almost immediately greeted with a good strong mug of coffee. Everything is running smoothly as usual and he contents himself to quietly observe when a message is handed to him. Orders for the Mighty Mo to return to Formosa to refuel, resupply and make needed repairs. Maybe the rumors about an invasion of Japan are true, he thinks.

Stick turns in for the night knowing that he's up early in the morning for a LRCAP the Flying Deuces are providing for an ASW TF. Stick still lacks a single kill, but he's really fine with that.

Stalin is happy to hear that his forces have gained a river crossing and it now appears the back door to the Japanese defenses has been kicked in. Stalin is demanding that the force push on rapidly towards it's objectives. Some generals are cautioning that the flanks need to be secure as does the supply line. Stalin screams that he wants all units to push forward. There is a sense of urgency in Moscow to gain ground quickly as there are rumors of the Japanese seeking Swiss help in contacting the United States and the United Kingdom to end the war.

The US Senate voted to join the UN and to let the UN use American forces to preserve peace and security.

Gil doesn't care as he's still in an emotional rut from Elaine's letter. The guys were happy to see that Gil was his old self on the mission, sound asleep.

President Truman and his advisers discuss the movement by Tokyo sending out feelers for peace. “I want them to know that we will not negotiate terms with them. Our forces will occupy Japan, but they can keep their damned Hirohito on his throne, but only as a figurehead. He is to have absolutely no real power. If they can't abide by these terms then Operations Thunder and Lightning continue on track. We will have an end to this war on our terms.” With that the President closes the meeting.

Stalin is raging at his generals, blaming them for the Japanese counter thrust aimed at lightly defended Chihfeng. One of the staff officer whispers to his friend that the general who warned Stalin about the possibility of attacking the Japanese back door would open the Red Army's back door. Of course the general in question hasn't been seen or heard of for days now. Already formations have been redirected to try an stem the developing Japanese attack. Luckily it looks like a limited force moving on Chihfeng, but there is no confirmation about the road further to the west and what it might hold due to snow storms limiting flights.

Sandy reads a few letters from Bill that she got today. She seems lost in thought and Dave asks her what's wrong. Sandy replied, “Bill has decided that he's going to stay in the Navy after the war ends. He still wants to be with me, but living in California's mountains will have to wait for retirement.” Dave asks if she's OK with that and she says “Yes dad, he's the guy I want and I won't try and change who he is.”

Elaine's father can't believe his ears when he finally learns of Elaine breaking off her relationship with Gil. “That young man would've made you a fine husband young lady,” he said before retiring to the living room where a nice, warm fire is going in the fireplace. He sits staring into the fire sadly thinking of poor Gil and he realizes how disappointed he is for himself. There's nothing to do as Elaine is 21 years old, headstrong and going to follow her own path.

Stalin is screaming at his generals, “Why aren't our forces moving faster? Our entire front could collapse if the Japanese hit Chihfeng with a large enough force. What has Mao done? Has he answered our cable?” When Stalin is told that no message to Mao was ever drafted he sits down and dictates a message demanding that the Chinese attack the Japanese to relieve some of this pressure.

Harry Truman sits alone in room silently thinking back to this day in 1941. He is now the head of the strongest and richest nation on the face of the earth with the power of the A bomb and yet he can't force Japan into a peace. “All of this power and their national will seems to be stronger than ours,” he mutters to himself.

There were many ship sightings in the area around Niigata along with claims of hits

Tokyo's day began with a fighter sweep made by 115 X P-51D who ripped into the 2 X Reppu, 8 X Shinden, 65 X Frank and 1 X Tony. The Mustangs lost 16 planes and 3 others were damaged in the furball that witnessed the Japanese shredded for 2 Reppus, 6 Shindens, 56 Franks and 1 Tony being shot down. A short time later an incoming raid of 108 X B-24D and 116 X P-38J was intercepted by a reconstituted CAP of 2 Shindens and 2 Franks. The Japanese fighters were splashed and a Lightning was lost in the lopsided fight while the AA damaged 29 of the bombers who caused moderate damage to a Nakajima engine factory.

Nagoya had 8 X Frank and 6 X Tony up when 273 X B-29 arrived. A Frank (5 damaged) and a Tony (4 damaged) were shot down as the Superforts lost 5 planes and had 17 damaged by the fighters and flak. The Mitsubishi engine factory was destroyed.

Sendai was struck by 161 X B-29 (4 damaged) and 88 X P-51D who caused heavy damage to the heavy industry.

Harbin had it's airfield take negligible damage from an air raid made by the Soviets.

Pontianak was hit by 7 X PB4Y who accomplished nothing.

At Kweiyang the IJA 35th Division was bombed by Chinese Mitchells who inflicted moderate casualties on the unit. The IJA 59th Division took moderate losses from an air strike. The IJA 65th Division was also pounded by Chinese planes and it too absorbed moderate casualties as a result. Chinese artillery accounted for heavy Japanese losses today.

Near Soerabaja the IJA 51st Heavy AA Battalion was struck by Allied planes who did no harm. The IJA 71st Ind. Mixed Brigade took moderate losses from and air strike. An Allied assault pushed the Japanese further from the base and inflicted very heavy casualties on them while the attackers had heavy losses of their own.

At Kadina the IJA 47th Division was hammered by Allied aircraft for moderate losses. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade was subjected to heavy casualties by Allied planes. The IJA 44th Ind. Mixed Brigade took heavy losses from an air attack.

15 miles W of Chihfeng the IJA 63rd Division was pounced on by 87 X P-63A (1 downed, 4 damaged) resulting in the unit having moderate casualties.

At Djokjakarta the IJA 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade tried to fend off the Allied air strike that hit hit and managed to damage a Corsair and a Thunderbolt while it had moderate losses.

91 miles N of Luda the 7th Guards Mechanized Corps was jumped by 10 X Ann, 8 X Sally and 14 X Randy. The ground fire claimed 2 Anns and damaged 6 others, 3 Sallys and 6 Randys were also damaged as the unit had moderate casualties.

29 miles N of Hungnam the 106th Region Fortress was attacked by 30 X Grace (3 damaged) and 3 X Tojo, but escaped harm.

Near Hakodate 6 X A-26B attacked an AP and hit it with 2 bombs that sent the ship down.

Near Ominato 3 X A-26B hit an AP with 2 bombs that caused heavy damage and ignited fires.

Tavoy was attacked by Allied planes and the flak damaged a Mosquito FB.VI. The airstrip was lightly damaged, some secondary explosions were seen and personnel losses were very light.

At Malang the Allied forces attacked and a little ground changed hands as both sides had heavy casualties.

At Tjilitjap the Allied troops struck and routed the Japanese, taking the base. The Japanese had heavy losses and retreated towards Djokjakarta. The Allies somehow avoided harm.

Chris has heard the rumors about the Navy sending the Big Blue Fleet into the Inland Sea to maraud. The ships are refueling and resupplying at Naha instead of at sea so Chris wonders if it could be true. He won't be flying today as he's scheduled for some rest and his plane is being inspected and it's getting a new engine installed. Well maybe not new, he thinks, but reconditioned.

Bill is exited as the Mighty Mo will sail tonight as part of a TF that is looking for trouble. They are supposed to rendezvous with the Big Blue Fleet and from there sail into the Inland Sea where they hope to raise hell.

Slim has managed to get out of bed and conned an orderly to push him in a wheelchair outside for a while. He sits there having a smoke when a couple of the lads show up for a visit. Nobody wants to talk about the accident and finally Slim says, “I don't want any of you giving the new lads a hard time of it. Especially the one who screwed up at training. I want you guys to help them otherwise they'll be dead within a couple of days on the next op. Ya got it?” The lads say that they'll pass the word and he should get better and get back to the unit.

85 miles N of Luda 8 X Randy (1 damaged), 5 X Ann (1 damaged) and 22 X Sally (1 damaged) attacked the 36th Army inflicting moderate casualties.

Linhsi was raided by 6 X Frances, 8 X Nick, 22 X Frank and 13 X Tony, but the bombs fell harmlessly.

Camranh Bay was struck by 186 X B-29 (15 damaged) who caused extremely heavy airfield damage, a very large number of secondary explosions were reported, 1 Irving, 1 Dinah and 1 Thora were destroyed and personnel losses were moderate.

Balikpapan was bombed by 27 X B-24J (3 damaged) and 36 X P-38J who downed a lone Frank that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. The airstrip was lightly damaged and there were light casualties.

At Djokjakarta the IJA 44th Heavy AA Battalion took moderate losses from an air strike.

At Kadina the IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit for moderate casualties. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade was also hit by aircraft and it too had moderate losses.

29 miles N of Hungnam the 106th Region Fortress was struck by 21 X Grace, 5 X Alf, 3 X Tojo and 24 X Frank. They were intercepted by 28 X Yak-9D and the furball was on. 7 Graces (7 damaged), 2 Alfs (1 damaged), 3 Tojos and 12 Franks were shot down by the Russians who lost 5 Yaks and another was damaged. The bombs fell off target.

At Soerabaja the IJA 71st Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounced twice on by Allied planes for heavy casualties. An Allied assault on the Japanese inflicted very heavy losses on them while the Allies had moderate casualties.

About 79 miles SE of Hungnan 20 X Tu-2S went after a pair of IJN ships and hit a CL with a bomb that triggered a fire. 2 planes were lost and 10 took damage.

Tavoy damaged 4 Mosquito FB.VIs as a raid caused extremely light airfield damage, a secondary explosion was seen and casualties were light.

Near Ominato 6 X A-26B and 50 X P-38J went after an IJN DD, hitting it with 4 bombs, sinking it.

At Chihfeng Japanese artillery caused negligible losses for the Soviets and counter battery fire did likewise to the Japanese. The Japanese had light casualties from the Russian artillery.

At Kweiyang the Chinese artillery hit the Japanese for heavy losses.

At Malang the Japanese absorbed heavy casualties from the Allied artillery barrages.

The 25th Division is drawing new gear for some of the older, worn equipment. Sam has his old trust M1 and won't part with it as he claims that the weapon has never let him down so why mess around with a good thing. He does have a new leggings though and he wonders why. Later on at an NCO meeting they are told that at this time of year the weather in Japan can be very cold and that the intention is to march to the north until they are in Tokyo. So much for the scuttlebutt, Sam thinks. Later his thoughts turn to Frankie and he wonders how the dog and Jim are getting on.

Bill stands on the bridge watching all of the men going about their duties with a quiet efficiency. He's concerned about the transit through the confined waters leading to their operational area. Damn, he thinks, I'm getting just like Ed. Bill is worried about the possibility of the Japanese having mined the transit area. He wonders if the operational planners have considered this possibility because when the Mighty Mo departed there were DMSs swinging idly at anchor.

Ed's condition has mysteriously taken a turn for the worse and all the medical staff can do is try and keep him comfortable while they hope for the best and fear the worst.

General Patton was seriously injured in a auto accident.

At Malang the Allied artillery barrages inflicted light casualties on the Japanese.

At Soerabaja an Allied attack inflicted very heavy losses on the Japanese and the attackers had light casualties.

Stalin smiles as he looks at the reports of the Japanese attack at Chihfeng. “Now we should throw our forces at them while they are caught out in open terrain. We should drive them back into China and hope that they try to attack us in the Harbin area too,” he says. The generals nod in agreement and a general attack will be carried out within a couple of days as more troops arrive.

Orders to steam in circles for the Big Blue Fleet have been issued and Bill now knows why. The DMs were dispatched a couple of days later than they should have been. Bill would rather wait than take the risk knowing that there's no cheaper or more deadly way of closing off confined waters.

Slim is doing OK, but he's not allowed out of bed unless an attendant is with him and he's in a wheelchair. The chair is fine with Slim as it gets him out of the ward. He's bored staring at the same 4 walls and it's depressing to see some of the guys who've been badly wounded. It puts everything into proper perspective and makes him feel that he's not so bad off.

Balikpapan was attacked by 29 X B-24J (1 downed, 1 damaged) and 42 X P-38J for light airfield damage, a secondary explosion was seen and personnel losses were moderate.

Palembang was hit by planes for extremely light airstrip damage and very light troop losses.

At Chihfeng a Soviet artillery bombardment caused heavy Japanese casualties.

To the NE the Big Blue Fleet has formed up for it's ride into the Inland Sea. Bill is happy to be a part of this mission as he feels that it will shorten the war. It is also planned that this fleet will pulverize Japanese opposition thrown at it and enable a huge convoy laden with supplies bound for Vladivostok to reach it's objective with the protection that is deemed to be as close to impenetrable as the USN can provide.

Stalin is pleased to hear that the promised supplies from the United States are on their way and that the USN will insure it's safe arrival. “Now we will be able to crush the Japanese without worrying about the weather delaying supplies from our factories that must travel so far by rail,” he says.

The Dutch are doing all that they can to place themselves in a position to once more occupy their colonial holdings as the British and French are also busily attempting.

The Swiss stress to the American ambassador that the Japanese are sincere in their attempt to make peace and end the war. This is then relayed to Washington and President Truman says, “They can keep their Emperor, but nothing else is negotiable. If they can't accept those terms then we'll dictate the terms when we arrive in Tokyo, if there is such a place left.”

The guys all agreed that it was nice to see the other bomb groups departing on a mission that the 500th BG didn't take part in. Gil seems to finally be getting over the loss of Elaine thanks to the guys of the Lucky 11 and especially Gel.

The people in the pub are celebrating the victory and Pete is busily pouring pints. “Maybe they will finally see the writing on the wall and just give up,” says Milt as he tosses down another beer.

Stalin knows that time is running out as the Japanese have put out feelers to obtain peace. He'll probably have to be content with the gains in Eastern Europe and settle for little in the Far East. This doesn't please him, but the future of the CCP looks bright and the West is war weary so he expects little opposition to his plans for setting up client states.

The room is silent as the Japanese proposal for peace is read aloud by the White House staffer. The President listens and then says, “They can keep their treasured Emperor as a figurehead and the rest is nonnegotiable. They can take it or leave it.”

The IJA 11th Division had heavy losses from an air attack. The IJA 23rd Division was also hit 2 times and it managed to damage 4 P-63A and 3 Pe-2s while absorbing heavy casualties.

At Malang the IJA 5th Division was pounded by Allied planes for moderate losses. The 18th Naval Guard Unit took heavy casualties from an air strike. The IJA 28th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from being pounced on by Allied planes. The Allied big guns inflicted moderate casualties on the Japanese with their constant barrages.

At Kweiyang the IJA 69th Division was attacked by Chinese Mitchells who inflicted heavy casualties on the unit. The IJA 65th Division was also hit by B-25Js and they inflicted moderate losses on the Japanese unit. The Chinese artillery caused heavy Japanese casualties.

At Djokjakarta the IJA 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade was attacked 2 times by airplanes for very heavy casualties. A Corsair and 2 Thunderbolt IIs were damaged in the attacks.

About 138 miles NW of Sasebo 123 X SBD (3 damaged), 77 X SB2C (1 damaged), 114 X TBF (1 downed, 2 damaged), 31 X TBM, 313 X F6F, 77 X F4U-1D, 45 X FM-2 and 8 X F4F-4 went after some IJN ships.

Near Johore Bahru 12 X Mosquito FB.VI peppered a pair of AGs with their bombs.

Palembang was hit by Allied planes for extremely light airstrip damage and a Betty was destroyed.

Bill maintains a cool and calm exterior, but inside he's churning knowing that 2 IJN BBs escaped. The TF will continue on it's current course and hopefully bring the rest of the IJN force to battle. He hopes for what the USN always planned for, a meeting of the big boys who would then slug it out. He admits that with the IJN having just 2 or 3 BBs left the scales are more than slightly tipped in the USN's favor and that OK with him.

Having undergone extensive care at a Naval hospital at Pearl Harbor and having been transferred to a Stateside facility Ed holds out hope that this won't be the end of his career, but thinks that sea duty is over for him. Later he slips back into a state where the doctors can't reach him.

The Swiss have passed on the response from the United States, which has the full backing of London, but the Japanese have not responded as of yet. President Truman has decided that he will keep the line of communication open, but that it's a take it or leave it proposition.

The guys were amazed at how easy their bomb run on Nagoya was. It's a far cry from the first raids on the Japanese cities. Knowing that they are now attacking a nearly helpless foe only frustrates the men of the Lucky 11. “If they're beaten why can't they stop fighting and admit defeat before everybody gets killed for nothing?” asks Donny.

Chris had a front row seat as the planes attacked the Japanese ships. He couldn't believe how big the one BB looked and how it managed to get away despite being hit so often. He wonders how the Japanese can throw away their ships without even giving them any air cover. Then he thinks that even if Japanese fighters were on hand they would've been brushed aside with ease as the pilot quality is awful and just flying in formation seems beyond the Japanese capabilities now.

There is still no response from the Japanese and the President is taking this as a positive sign. General Marshall cautions him about the cadre within the IJA that will resist any form of surrender.

Combat

16 miles S of Chihfeng the 39th Army took heavy casualties from Japanese planes.

Changchun was bombed by 57 X Tu-2S (4 damaged) who caused moderate airstrip damage, a secondary explosion, 1 Nick, 6 Frances, 1 Tabby, 1 Tony, 4 Franks and 1 Babs were burnt and personnel losses were heavy.

Ominato was raided by 67 X B-25J (1 downed, 16 damaged) and 38 X P-38J for moderate airfield damage, some secondary explosions were claimed, 2 Topsys, 3 Sallys, 5 Tinas, 3 Tabbys and 3 Daves were destroyed and casualties were heavy. In the afternoon another air raid was made by 10 X A-26B (6 damaged) and 49 X P-38J who caused negligible damage to the airfield and trashed a Topsy.

Harbin was struck by 85 X Tu-2S (2 damaged) and 8 X Yak-3 for heavy airfield damage, a few secondary explosions were seen and troop losses were heavy.

Hong Kong was attacked by 50 X B-25J (3 damaged), 15 X A-26B (1 damaged) and 24 X P-38J for moderately heavy airfield damage, there were many secondary explosions reported and casualties were moderate.

Camranh Bay was bombed by 163 X B-29 (11 damaged) who did extremely heavy damage to the airstrip, there were some secondary explosions observed and losses were very light. This should be enough to pave the way for the surprise invasion of Hainan Island.

Bangkok was visited by 48 X Mosquito FB.VI (12 damaged) who did light damage to the airfield, triggered some secondary explosions and there were heavy casualties.

The 147 X Liberator VI (1 downed, 21 damaged) arrived and they clobbered the port for extremely heavy damage, there was a very large number of secondary explosions claimed and losses were very heavy.

At Harbin the IJA 29th Division absorbed heavy casualties from 2 air strikes in which 3 Pe-2s were damaged. The IJA 11th Division was hit by Soviet aircraft for heavy losses and a P-39Q was downed, 3 others damaged and a Tu-2S was also damaged. The IJA 23rd Division damaged a P-63A and 3 P-39Qs in a strike that inflicted light casualties on the unit.

At Gili Gili the IJA 21st Division had moderate losses from an air strike.

At Malang the IJA 5th Division was pounded three times for heavy casualties by Allied planes. An Allied attack on the Japanese positions outside of Malang caused very little land to change hands though the Japanese absorbed extremely heavy losses and the Allied troops took very heavy casualties.

At Kweiyang the IJA 62nd Division was bombed for very heavy losses. The Chinese troops surged forward and assaulted the Japanese positions with both sides sustaining extremely heavy casualties. The Chinese lost about 3 times the number of troops as the Japanese did in their attempt to push them back that met with success as the Japanese retreated towards Kweilin.

At Kadina the IJA 47th Division absorbed moderate casualties from an attack made by Allied planes. The IJA 49th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate losses from an air strike. The IJA 68th Ind. Mixed Brigade had moderate casualties from an air attack. The IJA 44th Ind. Mixed Brigade was pounded by planes for light losses. The IJA 64th Ind. Mixed Brigade took moderate casualties from an air attack.

At Djokjakarta the IJA 27th Ind. Mixed Brigade was hit three times by Allied planes for very heavy losses and a Thunderbolt II was damaged.

148 miles NW of Sasebo 24 X Grace and 9 X Zeke vainly threw themselves into the cauldron of the Allied CAP of 761 X F6F, 189 X F4U-1D, 138 X FM-2 and 18 X F4F-4. All of the Japanese planes were splashed and a Corsair was damaged. Then 24 X Judy, 22 X Grace and 63 X Nick tried and died except for 2 Graces who made it into the clouds. 3 Hellcats and 3 Corsairs were damaged. A bit later 62 X Judy, 2 X Jill, 67 X Grace and 19 X Betty threw their lives away in their insane attempt to reach the Allied fleet. 5 Hellcats and 3 Corsairs were damaged. Yet another attempt on the Big Blue Fleet was made by 28 X Grace, 23 X Betty and 8 X Frances only for them all to meet their doom. 15 Hellcats and 4 Corsairs were damaged. In the afternoon 3 X Judy, 3 X Grace and 6 X Nick appeared and 2 of the Graces lived to tell the tale and a Corsair was damaged. This was followed by a pair of Bettys who died and 2 Corsairs were damaged. The Japanese continued to throw their planes at the USN all willy nilly as 3 X Grace and 8 X Betty failed to penetrate the CAP. 2 Graces survived and a Corsair was damaged as the other Japanese planes found watery graves.

Palembang was struck by Allied planes for negligible airstrip damage and a secondary explosion. Another strike later in the day caused very light damage to the airfield and destroyed a Betty.

Bill sees droves of fighters coming and going and he takes great comfort knowing that he's under an umbrella the likes of which has never been seen before. After yesterday's surface engagements he feels that there is little chance of the IJN throwing anything his way, but true to form he keeps his crew on their toes to expect the unexpected. He is frustrated as the DMSs still haven't arrived on station to clear the way for the Big Blue Fleet to traverse the confined waters.

Chris has flown 3 CAP missions today and as he wearily drops off of the wing of his Hellcat he smiles to himself. He did his job well today as he splashed 6 Japanese planes. Later that night he's informed that all 6 are now confirmed kills, giving him a total of 21. He's surprised that suddenly the Japanese are throwing themselves into a meat grinder in such small strikes.

Truman looks at the men gathered and says, “Well that's it then. Effective midnight, tonight, there will be an end to hostilities. Arrangements will be made for the formal signing of a peace document in Tokyo Bay. I want as many of our warships as possible there and our aircraft will fly overhead just to remind the Japanese why they are surrendering.”

Permanent HQs for the UN were established in the United States.

The ceasefire has held and the word has spread like wildfire through all of the branches of the military. PEACE! The war is over and the Japanese have finally admitted to defeat. From the highest offices in Washington DC, London, Canberra, Moscow and many other places to the lowest privates spread all over the world unbounded joy is the order of the day. Troops in close proximity to the Japanese remain wary, but there have been no incidents.

I would like to heap thanks and praise upon Steve as through the years we stuck with the game and never had any problems concerning what anybody did or didn't do. Steve was always a gentleman and an opponent to be treasured.

I will do an epilogue to address the post war lives of the many characters touched in the AAR, though a daily installment will probably not be the norm any longer. I have many pictures that I never used in the AAR and I'll include them for your viewing pleasure as I wrap things up.

William Smith (Bill) returned to California in April of 1946 from commanding the BB Missouri, on which the surrender ceremony was held. Upon his return he and Sandy got married. Bill remained in the Navy until his retirement in 1968 at the rank of Admiral. Though he stayed in the Navy he was never as happy as when he commanded the DD O'Bannon. Sandy managed the life of a Navy wife and raised their 2 children, both girls. She continued to make their home in the little town in the California mountains where she and Bill lived out their years happily together.

Dave, Sandy's father, never one known for emotion, broke down crying at the wedding when he gave the bride away. Dave spent his days tinkering on various vehicles at the garage, always enjoying his coffee until he passed away in 1957.

Phil retired from the Navy after attaining the rank of Captain. He never had another command of a ship after the DD O'Bannon. Upon leaving command of DesRon 12 he had a series of desk jobs that finally made him fed up and in 1952 he left the Navy. He got a job with the Newport News Shipyard, where he worked until 1971. Upon retirement he literally died of boredom. He never married.

Captain Demesa retired in 1953 and enjoyed a very comfortable retirement due to his investments with Red and Cookie. He bought a cottage on the island of Maui and enjoyed his wife, sons, daughter and of course the grandchildren. He kept in close contact with Red until the day he died> Red and Cookie were pallbearers at the funeral.

Pete lived a fruitful and happy life with Sylvia. They never had another child after Pearl. Sylvia never returned to the nursing profession as the hotel kept her and Pete pretty busy. Pearl eventually took over the running of the Story Bridge Hotel and in 2004 she finally stepped down and a son took over. Milt died in 1959 from liver failure due to his drinking. Jac followed him in 1960, a few months later, and Sylvia said that she knew that her mother wouldn't do well without Milt about. Pete died in 2001 and Sylvia followed in 2008. She spent a great deal of time with Pearl and admitted to feeling empty without her Pete.

Robert “Stick” Irvine ended his military service having never been credited with downing even a partial enemy plane. He was very comfortable with this and proud of the fact that as a wing man he never lost a lead. After trying his hand at selling insurance and a few other jobs he ended up becoming a minister. He had a mission that helped the poor and helped to feed and house the homeless in Detroit.
