Given the 8 groups, this is what we can say about the Round of 16. Groups are basically paired: A-B, C-D, E-F, G-H. The first of a group plays vs the second of the other group. Something like this:

Only one country has won the tournament outside of their own continent. On that basis a South American victory seems most likely. If so then Brazil or Argentina would be the most sensible guesses. A European country? I doubt it personally.

Instead, I am going to have a little wager on an African winner. You never know, a lot of stranger things have happened in football..... like Spurs keeping the same manager for more than 5 minutes. I'm sure that happened once.

It's not likely this year, but I think it's likely we (or at least the young uns amongst us) will see an African winner. Ghana weren't bad at the last one were they? This time round I think the likely outcome is a Brazil vs Argentina (or Spain) with a Brazil win.

I can see England limping through the group stage on four points (win vs Costa Rica, draw against Uruguay and cock all from the Italy game). A narrow win over the Ivory Coast will then be followed by a trouncing at the hands of Brazil. Wayne Rooney will be predictably pants despite someone describing him as a top, top player. He will run around a lot though, as well as going a rather startling shade of red. Joe Hart will do what English goalkeepers do these days and gift an equaliser to Uruguay.

Here's a question for those who will be following the tournament... Aside from your own nation, who would you like to see do well?

For my part, I'd like to see Ghana do well. No idea why.

To me it's easy: the team which plays the most beautiful football aka offensive football. Perhaps football owes a WC to Holland. The poor guys have failed the few chances they had: 70s and last WC.

Beckenbauer had said on the 90s IIRC that the football future is Africa. Not sure they are producing enough talent yet. Isolate jewels appear (like Liberian Weah 2 decades ago) but they need more of this + backed by other strong reliable players.

Interesting question.

Because of 1974 and 1978 I always have a soft spot for Holland. Provided they don't resort to the tactics they employed in the final four years ago, then my "second team" is always Holland.

Otherwise, I generally go for the underdog in every match.

I just hope for a good tournament.

I'm afraid it's going to be really really tough Germany and Portugal should be grabbing the two seats available. But of course nothing is written in stone

If this World Cup had been Europes turn I would have stuck my neck right out and said Belguim will win. Still rate them as the real dark horses of the competition.

Belgium has seemingly come from nowhere to produce a load of extremely talented footballers - much better than their 80's squad. Good enough to win a World Cup? Possibly, but not this time round.

It's the toughest group of the tournament. I think that any of the four from the group could be expected to qualify from a different group. As is though, I wouldn't be surprised to see the US finish 4th. I'd like them to qualify (with Ghana) not least because it would dump Portugal out which would make Ronaldo cry.

I know indeed Ronaldo is err... *special* Still he is one of the best players out there and is a joy to watch. And despite his prima donna, ego-maniac character he is an incredibly honest player... on the pitch that is. He gives everything, he tries everything (then he might cry or rant if things go wrong). But he is an utter professional who never gives up and this I respect

And given that I want to see the best players playing (Ronaldo, Messi, Iniesta, Ribery etc etc etc), I hope they make it to the next level.

France lose Ribery - that' a bit of a blow. More to the point, England may lose the Ox. Fully understand Hodgson waiting as long as possible for him given the alternatives are Carrick or Cleverley.....

Reus is probably out for Germany. He is widely regarded a the most important midfielder of the Nationalmannschaft.
Another blow to our slim hopes.

Always look on the bright side mate. Germany's hopes maybe slim, but they are a billion times better than England's

I found out an interesting fact yesterday, the World Cup has only ever been won by teams that border* (or actually are) France or Uruguay. It's probably not surprising given that France and Uruguay are in the middle of the two biggest concentrations of footballing nations, but (for now at least) it means that there's going to be no World Cup for Russia, USA, Ghana or Mexico. It does mean the Swiss or Belgians could mount a challenge this year though!

*England counts, because of the Channel Tunnel. And the fact you can see France from England

Who needs hope when you have unrealistic expectations? At least this year no-one has come out and said we can go all the way etc etc. Until something changes we will be staying where we are as a quarter finals team.

warspite1

Quarter Finals? I obviously hope you are right, but if we play anything like we did in South Africa in 2010 (or even the Euros in 2012) we will be lucky to finish ahead of Costa Rica....

Our defence is probably the worst its been in living memory - but if we recognise that and just go out and attack, play to our strength - then we could reach the last eight. We have nothing to lose by doing that, and we have some decent players that can cause defences concern.

Ribery and Reus out? And Ronaldo with a knee problem...

No matter how much I may despise a player, if he is really good, I want him to play

Right then, who is interested in a World Cup predictions competition? - along the lines of the one we did for the European Championship two years ago (exact format to be decided).

We had seven last time (see below) although we seem to have lost redcoat from the forum. Would be good to get at least ten. Anyone interested then please put your name down?

No, sadly the take-up was er.... limited I'll readily join in if someone wants to organise something, but I'm a bit tired of flogging dead horses.....

I'd say the quarter finals are ambitious, but not unrealistic. And not necessarily this year.

England has an un-official world Cup song:

So which of these two, all-time classics was actually the best?

Euro 96 (European Championships)

Three Lions (Football's Coming Home)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJqimlFcJsM

Italia 90 (World Cup)

World In Motion

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re4aDJL3heA

Can't choose between them to be honest - great music, great football memories!

Oh dear...that's embarrassing. Apologies Dixie. I could not for the life of me remember where I heard/read that interesting fact. I flicked back through the thread (and the Euro Championships thread) to ensure it wasn't from here.... but obviously missed it.

Yeah they'll never get past Germany for sure unless there are two teams from each group. Then Portugal may be a problem for the number 2 slot so US should be out early.

My money's on ITALY all the way.
