I tried to start up a random campaign and every time i hit the random button the program exits. No error, no lock up, it just shuts down.I tried various compatibility modes for XP. Reading the log it looks like a 64 bit issue but maybe someone can tell me for sure or has a work around. Log pasted below.

Budd,

Have you recently installed it? or is an older installation. If you just installed it, make sure you allow game to install DirectX and the .NET components. And make sure you wait until they are installed and you get the Success message from PCO.

Thanks
Rick

Also, make sure after you install to check the mods section as there were some mods that specifically improved random campaigns.

Also, if regular fixed scenarios work, but random battles or campaigns do not, make sure you have file associations set for .hta's to be associated with Microsofts HTML Application Host

Thanks
Ric

fresh install, the net and direct x install seem to go fine, but it did pause and i don't remember having this problem last time it was installed. Can i run the .net and direct x again without uninstalling the game. i'll check the mod section for the improvements.

I'm not sure that would work. Your log file seemed to indicate that there was an executable that it could not run. Maybe it was corrupted? I would try a fresh install myself, and also grab the latest patch.

Might you AV sw be giving it trouble?

Thanks
Rick

Open a command prompt and type "mshta.exe" and see what response you get.

Sounds like an adware/spyware/malware removal tool may have done something bad to it.

What OS are you running?

You haven't removed/deactivated internet explorer?

Basically my fault. All the PCO utilities were rapid prototyped in javascript/hta so I could get them out fast. Problem is that some malware hijacked mshta so some cleaners kill it, even though it is a valid, MS supported windows exe.

Hmmm,

It could be the link between mshta.exe and .hta files is broken.

Ok next try starting one of the .hta programs directly from the PCO install directory by double clicking on it from windows explorer. Doesn't mater which one. If you get a windows doesn't know how to open this file dialog box, there is your problem which is easy fixed by re-associating .hta to mshta.exe

well.... progress at last, thank you. I get the generator screen, but an error when generating the battle. I'm trying to start the 1st infantry division short june 1941-dec 1941, i leave everything at default but make sure the date is in the range. I try to start in july 1941 and get the following screen.

tried several different ones they always say successfully generated battle, then errors out.

generating random battles seems to work, just not the campaigns.

If you tried to change the start date from june to july, you should have gotten an error as soon as you clicked build as Random Campaigns have key battles and the dates you choose must cover those the dates for those key battles. Those dates are shown at the top of the screen next to the 'key battles' line. That campaign has to start in June.

Also make sure you have the mod referenced here installed: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/fb.asp?m=3487646

When you generate Random campaigns, you will sometimes get a "Failed" message like you show. When that happens, just try generating it again. The mod above reduces the chances of that happening, though it doesn't eliminate it.

Thanks
Rick

Do you mean you get the screen above AFTER you get a message saying Campaign was successful? If so, go in and check to see if your campaign is in the campaign list (you'll need to scroll down as it will show at bottom of list).

Thanks

After the campaign is generated, a "Saving Campaign" message is displayed briefly, then you are returned to the Campaign selection screen and your Random Campaign should show up at the bottom of the list, so you'll have to scroll the window. I'll be back later today and I'll try to post a screen shot.

Are you using any mods, other than the one I linked to? if so, disable them.

Thanks
Rick

no sir, no mods other than the file. Would this be some kind of file association thing?
this is what shows before the error.

here's another shot.

I dont know if this means anything but the screens all refer to random battle generation, not campaign. Except the first screen that pops up.

all the tops of the window read battle generation.

The screens you're showing are from the Random Battle generator. They don't (shouldn't) show up when you generate a Random Campaign. The Campaign Generator should be doing all of that behind the scenes.

Thanks

Can you check your game folder and make sure you have the files show in this screenshot with correct dates?

You might also check properties on both the
PzCRCg.hta
and
PzCRBg.hta

and make sure they both open with the Mshta app.

Thanks
Rick

ok i did a fresh install after uninstalling & cleaning the registry.Release version, patch, mod file. I have 6 versions of mshta.exe on my computer, some dated 2013 others 2009. I tried each one of them to open the file. some said PCOF wasn't installed when i tried to use them others would open the program but again when i hit build campaign it would open the battle generator. On the properties page interestingly enough it doesn't show what the program opens with and when i right click on the file and click open with and associate the file with one of the MSHTA files the always associate this program with this file type is greyed out on the bottom.

I appreciate the continued help by the way. would it make any difference if i got copies of your campaign HTA file?

this might be a clue to the problem. hold on while i try something. in meantime I'm attaching zipped copies of my RBG, and RCG files.

Sorry you're having so much trouble getting it to run.

Thanks

replacing the files didn't help, same thing.....build campaign opens the random battle generator.

no worries i just appreciate you taking the time to help.

its weird that i don't have the same icon for those files as you do, i'm sure it has something to do with the association thing. Maybe i don't have the right MSHTA file?

I can try sending you mine, but I don't really know what that might do. I checked mine and it looks like it's a 12/2013 vintage and it looks like it might have been installed with IE 11. I know I had previous versions of IE, so I suspect the version of mshta is a problem.

in the meantime, if you can go to staqrt menu, in the search window type file associations, then choose the topic to associate programs, in the window that come up select .hta and click the change button.

let me know (by the way, my 'all programs' button is greyed out as well).

Thanks
Rick
