van Gaal outfoxes 'em all with a secret weapon for the PKs and the Netherlands will now face Argentina in the semis. What a game and it's a shame that Costa Rica lost, but somebody had to.

3 hours to game time and the celebratory fireworks will be starting up sooner. TV coverage of the game, the fans, etc. has been going on for an hour already. People have left work for lunch and will return tomorrow morning.

Coming into this there were two matches I really wanted to see: Brazil - Germany and Brazil - Argentina. They both might happen.

I actually think Germany wins today (although my predictions have missed so often that might help Brazil). However, if Brazil wins, can't you just feel the late Messi goal in the final to beat the hosts? A Brazilian nightmare, yes, but a real possibility? Who knows, this thing has been so good because it's been so hard to predict.

Achtung! Panzer! Holy crap.

Once the second goal went in it seemed like Brazil just collapsed morale wise. No defense at all, just shocking. Germany plays like this in the finals they can punch their ticket.

For the first time, a team is proving that the emperor is naked. Brazil have no defense.

The Germans goal efficiency is abnormal however.

What I find odd is that Scolari is known for being more pragmatic and defensively minded than most Brazilian coaches. How did they show up so disorganized today? I know they are missing two key players, but it seemed like Scolari abandoned his personality and tried to push up and play like Pele. I understand that morale implodes after the third goal, but the first two were just undefended as if by design.

Silva, now absent, was the def leader and the captain. The commentators noted that David Luiz is now in charge. Thiago Silva was THIS great a loss...

I felt bad after the 3rd goal. Hundreds of millions are watching this game and the pressure on Brazilian players must be huge.

Fun fact : I didn't see any goals on live
I started watching at 00:15 and was in the toilet during the "festival".

Perhaps I should stop watching so they keep scoring.

I will stop looking for 5 min

This sounds like a GOOD game. Maybe Fred better start his dramatics to get them back in the game! ;-)

I may poke alot of fun at Soccer but in reality I like to watch it when i'm at my favorite Irish or English watering hole. In truth though its the Flopping or "Diving" that turns me off, esp. when it impacts a match.

read a really interesting article recently asking if maybe American teams should embrace the European and South American attitude and just incorporate it into their game. Perish the thought. I think if ever there was a sport that needed Instant Replay (or more refs) its Football/Soccer. Then again that would not mesh so well with the timer always on aspect.

Sounds like this game is full of soccer skill on display. Thats what i like to see.....because I can't kick a soccer ball worth CRAP. (and many years of little league only made me worse! Time for a new sport)

Yeesh. Yes, clearly the loss of Silva was vital. Not like Dante or Luiz are pikers, though. The shame is that the yellow that kept Silva out was a real mental flameout by him in the Colombia game. He easily should be playing today.

You would expect a football country like brazil to overcome the loss of one or two players... I mean, 0-7 at home during a semi final of a worldcup... For most of the goals I just saw 3 players MAX defend.. THREE..

EDIT Corrected the score...

This is painful to watch. The entire coaching staff surely fired, yes? Not sure it's really fair, but in the hothouse of pressure that is Brazil, I can't imagine any other outcome.

All I can say is WOW.

After the 2nd it just looked like the Brazilian players were in shock, and so tentative. I think this is the pressure, and without Silva and Neymar the passion we saw in the Columbia game was nonexistent.

This will be hard for those players for a long, long time. Have to feel for them.
