August--September 43 update/ johnjohn

I am an experienced beginner who has been learning and sharing my learning here with the host's permission. This campaign is against the AAR. Japan is historic. This is my second campaign after a computer crash derailed my first effort (a real Noob job) in July 44.

At this point I am attacking the enemy in all fronts but two.

CBI--China is quiet, Loyang is constantly being attacked as is Wenchow, but both have 1200 av in place and are holding. Wenchow is holding better. Weekly enemy casualties are about 5,000 troops, tubes, and vehicles. With the supply situation at Loyang just above desperate, I have detailed 25 C46As of the China Air Force to lift supplies to the garrison. I have also tasked considerable over the hump stuff to supply the airbase supporting Loyang. Enemy air attacks have stepped up, but thus far are only a nuisance.

India is in total support mode with operations ongoing in Burma. 8 Divisions have invaded Burma. Katha, Myitkyina, Warazup, Shwebo, and Mandalay have fallen. Two divisions are refitting at Mandalay while four are moving on toward Magwe. A seventh division is at Prome, but blocked there by superior enemy force. Two more divisions, the 81st East Africa and the 6th Aussie Inf are enroute from Akyab to support the 18th British at Prome. That will provide a three to one advantage that should be able to secure Prome while the central force secures central Burma and Lashio in order to open the Burma road from Mandalay.

Eventually all 8 divisions will converge on Rangoon/Pegu to secure that terminus of the Burma Road as well. After that is Bangkok, but I am not sure that I want to continue this campaign in the far east after Rangoon is taken. I would rather divert the fleet elements to support USN efforts in central pacific or Mac in PNG, leaving enough hulls to supply the road and the Burma Army.

SWPAC--finally Mac got in gear. PM fell in mid August to a well executed invasion involving 4 divisions (1,5th, Aussie and 41st and 32nd USA)and considerable ENGR HQ support with four tank elements. the 41st and 32nd, 1st Corps HQ (to which the two divisions belong) are half way to Buna with a long tail back to PM. Engrs and two Armor units are trying to keep up, but are falling behind. Eventually they will all gather at the river (yuk yuk) and attack Buna which intel and recon have as lightly defended. In fact, the PNG and Solomon campaigns are not experiencing much in the way of enemy action. I suspect, and intel shows, that most of the defense is in the PI and Marianas. There is also a noticeable lost of pilot talent on the part of the enemy with over 5,000 planes downed since the beginning of the war. Large numbers of enemy air is only noted in Burma. That will diminish as they lose their air bases.

The 1st Cav and support elements are on the way to assault Milne Bay, which is lightly defended but highly developed.

Solomons--only training for Shortlands and Bougainville going on. 37th Inf on the canal was reassigned to the 14th Corps HQ which just arrived. 14th Corps will lead the assault on Shortlands. 1st Amph HQ will lead the assault on Bougainville with the 1st USMC Div in tow. Both of these assaults are planned for early 44.

Cenpac is assigning ships and planes and support for the invasion of Kwajalene, Roi-Namor, Eniwetok, and Alingalaplap. This assault will take place in Oct/Nov 43. Planning is also in place for Truk and the Marianas. I am planning to skip Truk and just whack it a bit.

Disposition of Divisions
44th USA--Seattle
33rd USA--PH
24th USA--PH
25th USA--PH
7th USA--PH
2nd USMC--Makin
3rd USMC--Tarawa
4th USMC--PH
27th USA--Tulagi
40th USA--Tulagi
23rd USA--Munda
37th USA--Canal
43rd USA--Canal
1st USMC--Canal
41st USA--North one hex from Pass to Buna (which is occupied by PM defenders when they were displaced.
32nd USA--with 41st
2,3,4,8 Aussie in Aussie
1,5, Aussie--PM
18 Brit--Prome
7th Aussie, 9th Aussie, 5th British, 11 EAfrica, marching to Magwe from Mandalay.
17th Indian, 23rd Indian--Mandalay
309th Indian (a small Bde sized division)--Myitkyina
26th Indian--Diampur
81 EAfrica, enroute Akyab from Mombosa, 2 days out from Akyab.
6th Aussie--Colombo, will embark for Akyab on TF hauling 11EAfrica when unloaded.
The rest of the restricted USA, Aussie, and Indian forces are spread out in their restricted areas.

Adak is improved and being further supplied fuel and supply to be major base of operations. A/B 6, port 5.

I have not mentioned the airgroups this time around. The fact is most of the combat squadrons, that is most of the fighter and bomber squadrons, especially the fighter groups, are at 80+ EXP. For many of the front line groups the pilots (all of them in the group) average 25 kills. Maj Tapner of the 51st FG USAAF has 38 kills to lead the US. PO Domian of the 17th RAF has 66 kills, with two others, also of the 17th, with 60, and at least a dozen are at 50 or more. The 17th RAF was based at Kaylemo, thus was under constant attack since the beginning of the war. The unit is now based at Katha. This squadron by itself has 800+ kills.

Plans:

CBI--take central Burma and open the road to China.
SWPAC--advance overland to Lae
SOPAC--take Shortlands and Torokina. Start bombing Rabaul and Kavieng.
CENPAC--next up, take Kwaj, Alingading, Roi-N, and Eniwetok.
Aussie--hold
India--support
NORPAC--hold
WSTCST--support

All shipping between CT and East Coast has shifted to Aden with the opening of the route.

Still learning how to use divisions and HQs and structuring invasion forces properly so that the x types are not used. Looking forward to getting better aircraft in 44, as well as 7 US CVs (4 UK), 2 CVLs (1 UK), 36 CVEs (6 UK), 10 Battleships including all 4 Iowa's, 18 cruisers, 123 destoyers, 140 DE/PFs and a plethora of support ships.

KB--two definitely sunk, one possible, three remaining. Since sortie in June/July, the KB has gone dormant. The enemy still has considerable CV capability, but now so do I. Advantage Allies. And it only gets better.

I’m beginning to look at the process of what to do with India/Burma. To date, this has been a secondary theatre – overall Allied priority heavily tilted toward the Pacific theatres, particularly South and SW. The first task is getting the British fleet into action. Britain has essentially no effective carrier force – even in 1/44 this includes only CV Illustrious (in upgrade with 66 days remaining), two CVL (Hermes and the recently arrived Unicorn) and a CVE. BB Prince of Wales and CA Exeter, along with all ANZAC surface naval forces, are currently “on loan” to the US Carrier force as escorts. Large amounts of British transport ship capacity were diverted into the “EX” transport convoy route between the Eastern US and Australia. Most British amphibious ships also diverted to Australia for operations in SW Pacific. Much of this will need to be returned to Southeast Asia from its current assignments before effective naval/amphibious operations on any scale can commence in the Indian Ocean area.

British naval strength to date has also been plagued with numerous ship withdrawals (only a few scheduled withdrawals still remaining). Current British surface naval forces on hand include two BB (Queen Elizabeth & Valiant), BC Repulse and Renown, 4 CA, 3 CL, plus DD’s. Some Dutch naval forces (CLAA Van Heemskirk and some DD) also in Southeast Asia. Submarine forces in Southeast Asia are a 50-50 mix of British submarines and a number of US fleet subs – the US sub presence here a result of losses taken in a KB raid on Colombo in 6/42. To date in this campaign, all major British naval forces have been kept off-map in Capetown – partially to accommodate ship withdrawals, also that the numbers of permanently available naval forces in the British fleet are too few and not effective enough to play an effective role.

On land… two options are being examined, a land invasion into Burma and possible amphibious operations into the DEI. A third and more far-fetched option under consideration a landing in Malaya. For any of these to occur, a significant part of the Indian army will require transfer from restricted to non-restricted command to create an Allied ground force in sufficient strength to emerge from India, this transfer necessary per HR. PP priorities for this would have to be diverted from the Pacific theatres, though this shift is projected to be quite possible by the mid-1944 time frame. A number of Allied LCU destroyed in Malaya have been rebuilt in India (including 9th & 11th Indian Divisions as divisional units). A significant Chinese army and air force is also rebuilding in India. While I was unable to effectively conduct airlift supply into China, a reverse flow of transferrable Chinese LCU cadres airlifted out via Ledo was well within the capability of available air transport resources at the time. Chinese ground forces also include seven non-transferrable command corps LCU that had been cut-off from withdrawing into Chungking and made their way overland to India for lack of anywhere else to go. Presence of the non-transferrable Chinese corps in India is contrary to our HR but plans to handle this include not employing these LCU in front-line ground operations unless and until they are able to re-enter China (essentially giving me a modest but decent Chinese army if that were to happen). A small but now well-trained and equipped Chinese air force (all transferrable air units) is also operating in India.

An Allied ground campaign in Burma (in any form) will likely be impeded by the fall of China. My available intelligence data suggests Pillager transferred a large part of the Japanese army in China to the Pacific theatres, smaller amounts to Burma and elsewhere in Southeast Asia (though none to the DEI). I’m still evaluating of a limited (at least initially limited) Allied ground campaign in Burma, at least to provide Pillager with a diversion. Using Allied forces in Southeast Asia to bypass Burma and launch offensive operations deeper in the Japanese rear area (DEI, Malaya) is a somewhat attractive alternative.

Summary of Operations 1/30/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 358K, fuel 35K.

Sigint report entry for 1/30 reports heavy volume of radio signals from possible unknown Japanese TF(s) at sea in hex location 105, 130 (Solomon Sea north of Woodlark Is). Four US patrol subs are operating near this hex location – no reports from the US subs of any contact with Jap carrier aircraft or floatplanes. Nothing detected or visible on the map in this hex location. My estimate covers the range of possibilities from FOW on up to a sortie of Jap surface naval forces or possibly KB. Who knows?

No detected Jap submarines off Port Moresby, no reported contacts this game turn between Jap subs and Allied surface or air ASW.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

John--piping in on Burma campaign.

I am in a different situation than WNeumann. China is still active and holding against the AI. For me, opening up Burma and reestablishing the Burma road makes great sense. China is under supplied. Any source will prove helpful.

In the campaign with Pillager, China is lost. So the big question is why invade? As long as pillager wants to remain in Burma and not reach out to India, then let the sleeping dog lie. The UK Navy, when it does arrive, is not needed to defend India. Transfer the carriers elsewhere as needed. As for targets of opportunity in DEI/Malaya, think raids and not coming to stay. Unless you plan to retake the POL facilities to deny them to the enemy, why do it? Its like fighting an Octopus. Better to cut off the head and let the arms go limp.

If that is the goal, then forcing a way to reach the enemy homeland comes first, and in this case I think you can safely concentrate on that and not worry about retaking Burma. The fact is, Burma is big and a big force is needed. Unless I missed something earlier, I believe that you diverted the Aussie reinforcements from India to Aussie a while back. Without the Aussie and British Divisions, there is not enough force there. The Indian divisions are good, but poorly equipped. They need constant refitting when used. That is why, in my case, the brunt of the fighting is occurring with the British and Aussie divisions. These are well equipped and fight better, losing less men. As for experience, they are about the same as the Indian Divisions. However, in my campaign, the Indian Divisions take more losses. This is especially true in the units equipped with militia squads rather than regulars.

I did save most of the Burmese LCUs and stashed them at Kaylemo. They are now garrisoning the retaken cities, which is just about all they are capable of doing. They have Burmese squads which are in very short supply.

My assault started on the coast, taking CB and Akyab. The 18th chased the defenders all the way to Prome while the other three divisions cut over to Shwebo. The India front came from Komina, Imphal, and Ledo. Forces in Ledo took Myitkyina and Warazup. The Komina force took Katha and then built it up. The Imphal force went straight for Shwebo. The Chindits took Katha then moved to MK when the enemy moved two divisions from Shwebo to Bhamo. Those two divisions are still up there holding both ends of the road from MK to China through Bhamo. Once Shwebo fell all India reinforcements strat move to Imphal via Diampur, then march down the road to Kaylemo and then move to Shwebo. I have the RR from Mandalay to MK, so moving troops around to head off those two Jap Divisions is not a problem.

Some good points John. In our campaign, I do have the nucleus of an offensive-capable Allied ground force in India. The question is where to effectively use it. Any form of Allied offensive originating from India would be intended as a message to Pillager his back is not covered. Some Allied offensives in/from that area being more effective than others. The core of my Allied offensive ground force includes two British divisions (2nd & 18th) and 6th Australian Division plus three or four Indian Divisions along with supporting armor, artillery and HQ units. Burma not necessarily the best place to use these forces if more damage can be done elsewhere.

With KB’s attention firmly locked in the Pacific, even a modest (but well organized and employed) British fleet could hold its own if not own the Indian Ocean. Mid to late-1944 appears to be when things could be put together in the Southeast Asia/Indian Ocean area. In the meantime, much to do and some of that’s already been started.

Summary of Operations 1/31/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 377K, fuel 30K.

Two Japanese TF are now detected and visible on the map at the hex location (105, 130) where a Sigint report entry for 1/30 reported a heavy volume of radio signals. Jap TF detected in this location include one submarine plus a TF of 9 ships (6 PB, 2 DD) all moving NE towards Rabaul.

US patrol sub operating N of Rabaul (hex location 104, 116) reporting contacts with B6N1 Nell and D4Y1 Judy air patrols, a likely indicator KB has sortied and near the US sub’s position. KB itself has not been detected and not visible on the map. Timing of KB’s appearance from my perspective is both inconvenient and fortunate. US Main Carrier force has also sorted (its departure as previously scheduled) and moving northward. My estimate of KB’s possible destination is another strike on Port Moresby. Allied fighter CAP at Port Moresby (240 planes) have been activated. Allied transport shipping and light surface ASW forces at Port Moresby have completed unloading ops and now departing for Australia. The decks are cleared and the reception committee is ready for operation.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

• 2 N1K1 George (both on the ground)
• 2 N1K1 Rex (both air-to-air)

Summary of Operations 1/31/44 (continued)

South Pacific: Current base status of Noumea – 616K supply and 252K fuel on hand. Additional LCU continue to arrive in Noumea, these include flak units and HQ XIII Fighter command (air HQ) moved forward from Auckland plus various small LCU being picked up and collected from outlying rear-area bases. Koumac airfield construction continues, now approaching its completion to full 9(7) size. Plans at Koumac are to bring air HQ and aviation support elements into Koumac (most of these already at Noumea) along with additional supply point stocks, followed by air unit transfers from New Zealand. A likely possibility for Koumac airfield is a launching point for additional 4E bombers to be employed in strikes against Jap bases at Lunga/Tulagi and the eastern Solomons area. I have a second group of 4E bombers formed in the South Pacific independent of the 4E bomber force now operating over New Guinea.

Summary of Operations 2/03/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 374K, fuel 30K.

KB task forces remain stationary in Manus base hex, still detected by coastwatchers and PBY Catalina naval search planes. US patrol sub enters Manus base hex, torpedoes a CV. Some discrepancy between various game turn reports as to identity of the torpedoed Japanese CV – game turn replay (wpae001 save file) shows the carrier as CV Akagi, one version of the 2/03 game turn combat report file (combatreport_440203) shows the carrier as CV Amagi, a second combat report (combatreport) and the Sunk Ships display both indicate the carrier is CV Soryu. What they (mostly) agree on is that a Jap CV took one torpedo hit and some significant damage to the CV likely occurred. AAR’s (both versions) follow.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

US Main Carrier force continues moving northward. While there’s no positive indication the US Carrier force has been detected, a G4M1 Betty search plane was reported shot down by CAP at the carriers’ current position E of Townsville. At this point, I’m attempting to obtain a possible attack position for US carriers to strike the KB if a suitable opportunity arises.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 2/03 reports intercepted Jap radio signals from Wotje. Detected status of Wotje shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Burma: Detected status of Jap base in Magwe – no airfield damage, 103 aircraft (all fighters), oil production 123(178), refinery 97(4), 24 Jap LCU.

USSR: Periodic checking of Soviet air units and LCU for possible upgrades. For air units, plane upgrades are limited due to availability of newer planes in the replacement pool and most Soviet air squadrons not upgradable at this point in the game. The main upgrade opportunity for Soviet air units is gradual replacement of I-15 and I-16 aircraft in fighter squadrons with MiG-3 along with LaGG-3 and Yak-7B plane types now entering production. Most Soviet infantry LCU now have their TOE upgraded from 1941 to 1943 establishment. Equipment upgrades for Soviet tanks currently unavailable, current artillery equipment in Soviet ground forces is adequate. Base (mainly airfield) expansion completed or in progress at many bases in the USSR.

Despite a very slim to no possibility of Soviet entry into the campaign before 1945, an opportunity still exists to get Soviet air and ground forces “into shape” while the USSR remains inactive. My intent here being to have Russian forces combat-ready as much as possible when a Soviet entry into this campaign occurs.

Summary of Operations 2/05/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 373K, fuel 30K.

KB task forces depart Manus base hex, just ahead of daylight air strikes by US Main Carrier force. US carriers went on an overnight forced march northward into the Solomon Sea area – naval air strikes on Manus launched from an attack position due E of Lae (hex location 98, 130). A PBY Catalina naval search plane was lost in air-to-air action (possibly to KB fighter CAP) over hex location 101, 113 north of Manus – one Japanese TF (reported as 7 CA) spotted in this hex moving on a NW heading My estimate is the detected Jap task force north of Manus is likely part of KB. AAR’s of US carrier air strikes on Manus follow.

During its northward movement, TF’s in the US Main Carrier force “overran” Japanese barge traffic moving between Rabaul and New Guinea – each of the 10 air combat TF doing a separate “overrun”. No reports of Jap barges hit or sunk, it appears the US carrier TF’s pushed through the Jap barges rather than engaging them. A sample AAR from the 10 separate surface combat actions follows.

Summary of Operations 2/06/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 373K, fuel 30K. A transport convoy arrived in Port Moresby with elements of US 43rd Infantry Division, the remainder of 43 Division now enroute to Port Moresby aboard a second transport convoy.

KB returns, two Japanese air combat TF detected off Hansa Bay (hex location 99, 120). A naval air strike (15 B6N2 Jill) was launched from KB against Allied transport shipping in Port Moresby – AAR for this action below. US Main Carrier force moved southward since last game turn, again overrunning Japanese barge traffic moving between New Guinea and Rabaul. US carrier force is now returning northward to engage KB or its elements. Situation map follows.

Parts of US Main Carrier force launch port air strikes against Buna targeting 15 Japanese ships detected in port. My estimate prior to the air strike was that Japanese ships in Buna port were probably barges and/or small transports, this estimate proving correct. While barges aren’t the most attractive target, a possible opportunity to take them out in quantity does not detract from the overall mission. 35 Japanese barges reported sunk in Buna. Reported US plane losses include 2 TBF Avenger (both ops), 1 SBD-5 Dauntless (flak), 1 SB2C-1C Helldiver (ops). AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 2/07/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 376K, fuel 30K. First group of US 43rd Infantry Division elements now fully disembarked in Port Moresby without incident.

KB withdraws again to the northwest before it could be engaged by US Main Carrier force. KB’s current position is off Hollandia (hex location 96, 114), reported moving on a NW heading. Activity over the last several game turns could reflect changes in Pillager’s handling and tactics of KB at this stage of the campaign. This last action of KB did not appear to include all available Japanese carriers for unknown reason(s). Possible factors include fuel point shortages in Japanese forward bases near the South/SW Pacific theatre areas, replacement of plane and pilot losses in KB air groups from earlier combat actions over Port Moresby. Regardless of what is going on, KB’s appearance in reduced strength is temporary.

No significant offensive or defensive air actions by US Main Carrier force. Fighter CAP over the carriers destroyed a number of Jap 2E bombers on naval search.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea plus actions involving the US Main Carrier force.

Japanese planes reported destroyed
• 8 N1K1-J George (8 air-to-air, 1 ops)
• 5 N1K1 Rex (all on the ground)
• 6 Ki-61 Tony (3 air-to-air, 2 on the ground, 1 ops)
• 1 P1Y1 Frances (air-to-air)
• 1 G4M1 Betty (on the ground)
• 2 Ki-21 Sally (both air-to-air)
• 1 Ki-49 Helen (air-to-air)

Allied planes reported destroyed
• 7 P-38H Lightning (all air-to-air)
• 6 B-24D1 Liberator (4 air-to-air, 2 ops)
• 7 B-24J Liberator (5 air-to-air, 2 ops)
• 3 B-25C Mitchell (1 air-to-air, 1 flak, 1 ops)
• 64 SBD-3 Dauntless (all air-to-air though not all pilots were lost)
• 1 PBY-5A Catalina (air-to-air)

Allied bombing switched to day attack over Buna followed by a fighter sweep (not intended to be in that order but it worked out that way). AAR’s follow.

Detected status of Jap base at Buna – 8 aircraft (all fighters), airfield damage 50, no port damage, 11 ships in port (including 1 AM, 2 MGB, 4 LB), 23 Jap LCU, 3 Jap TF (28 ships total, all barges and small ships).

Detected status of Jap base at Lae – no airfield damage, 74 aircraft (all fighters), 12 Jap LCU, 6 ships in port (including 2 DD, 1 AK), no Jap TF. AK in port at Lae identified in a 2/07 coastwatcher entry – see South Pacific theatre report.

Detected status of Manus base hex shows 45 aircraft (41 fighters, 2 bombers), 5 Jap LCU, airfield size 3(5), port size 2(4)

An ill-fated port bombing strike by US Marine dive bombers from Port Moresby, these unfortunately arriving before both the fighter sweep (also launched from Port Moresby) and the airfield bombing raid above. While all SBD-3 plane losses from this raid were logged as air-to-air, it’s possible about half the destroyed planes were ops losses (instead) as not all pilots from the downed planes were lost. Luckily I have 300+ replacement SBD-3’s to burn. AAR’s follow.

Summary of Operations 2/08/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 384K, fuel 30K. A landing craft TF with LCU reinforcements (1 tank, 1 artillery unit) plus supply cargo unloading in Port Moresby. .

Pillager has reversed KB’s course again, moving it to a new position off Wewak (hex location 97, 119). US Main Carrier force has withdrawn to the SE, now located near Woodlark Is. Current operational plans for the US carrier force is moving it back into open areas of the Coral Sea – keeping it within the relatively confined Solomon Sea area is inviting possible Jap submarine and/or LBA attacks for little or no potential gain. Southward movement of the US Main Carrier force resulted in many surface contacts with what appears to be a considerable volume of Japanese barge traffic Pillager has running to/from Buna and Lae. Most contacts ended with no combat between US carrier TF and barges, several incidents did have US escort ships firing on Jap barges. A total of 15 Jap barges reported sunk this game turn from all causes. Condensed AAR’s with combat actions follow.

No significant offensive or defensive air actions this game turn by US Main Carrier force. Fighter CAP over the carrier force continues destroying Jap bombers on naval search.

As shown above and over the last several game turns, movement of the US carrier force has revealed a considerable volume of Japanese barge transport traffic running between (probably) Rabaul and destinations in New Guinea. While a considerable number of Jap barges were sunk over the last several game turns by Allied air, surface and submarine action, an ongoing effort to interdict and destroy this barge traffic has to continue. Destruction of Jap barges on any significant scale would have two results – loss of cargo aboard the barges along with the barges themselves. Both these results deteriorate not only the Japanese supply on New Guinea but also general Japanese supply in the theatre area. Pillager may have considerable numbers of Jap barges available (in pool), but how many supply points can he afford to expend to “buy” new barges to replace those sunk by Allied action. Those supply points would come out of front-line area stocks on hand at the expense of maintaining other Japanese activity and/or forces facing South/SW Pacific. Once a continuous effective Allied attack on Jap barges is maintained, it’s only a question of how long Pillager can maintain the Jap barges. The question now becomes… exactly how to launch this offensive and with what.

Summary of this game turn’s aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea plus actions involving the US Main Carrier force. Most Japanese bomber losses below are naval search planes intercepted by CAP fighters over the US carrier force.
