I've been bit by the Eastern Front bug once again and feel like it's time to try something else for a change (and finally toss WiR and HoI). This one seems like a good possibility as WitE is a tad heavy for the craptastic laptop I use and also appears to be in constant change wrt the rules etc. (been following the WitE forum for ages now without actually wanting to buy, weird perhaps? ) Anyway, after skimming through the forum I was wondering if it's still a good time to invest time on DC instead. Some questions though:

1) Is the PBEM good/balanced/whatnot and are there still players out there? (obviously there's some as the forum has posts and there some AARs, although not many new ones). Haven't used the PBEM++, is it a good system?

2) Does the prestige/card system, + supply/logistic I suppose, give a good 'feel'? For example, no ridiculous German advances into the depths of USSR or massive Red Army runaways? From what I understand it appears to force some 'stupid' play as the High Command eg. gives bad/unrealistic objectives (which would be nice) but does it work ok in PBEM?

3) Although I mostly like to play against human opponents these days it's nice to give single play a go sometimes. So, can the AI can actually play a bit? (Most of the time, in these kind of games, it frankly sucks but I saw some praise for this one...)

I have not used PBEM yet, so cannot answer that one, but a half-answer to #2.. is that the prestige/card system is one of my favorite things about this engine.

And, an answer to #3.. it is good, although it can become easy to trick it sometimes.

For myself, in most of these games I spend a lot of time creating scenarios, and editing.... and to test them out, I often play both sides...playing as one side, best I can, then change turns, and pick up as the other side. If doing this honestly, without relying on your "double knowledge" lol, it makes actually for an incredible experience.

1. PBEM +++ works well.
2. Great feel to the game with the cards.
3. AI is not so challenging once you learn how to play.
4. Very subtle game and not easy to to master.

I played WITE to death and gave up as it never seemed to reach a state of equalibrium.

IMO Case Blue is a much better game. Sure the scope is not the same but overall I much prefer CB. Its just better.

My only real complaint would be the OOB and TOE is not as good as it should be. For example the SS Mot and SS PzG divsions should have 3 INF regiments. In CB they only have 2. No idea how such a basic mistake could be made.

But I would recommned this game to any East Front wargamer.

As long as the AI can pull some kind of an offensive, so I don't always have to play the attacker, it should be fine for me. I try to avoid the most obvious tricks when playing against AI anyway.

I'm not much of an OOB/TOE nazi, as long as it's not way too wacky, so not a deal braker for me.
