Our subs got an xAK.

1,608 AV at Chungking.

The Empire made some pretty serious Frank sweeps against Bassein and did all right, but weight of numbers was with us and we came out on top overall. See the plane losses data below. Our movements continue with no visible evidence of being spotted.

The raid by the main body of the fleet carriers went well, but did not find the same convoy with so many destroyers that was seen yesterday. DD Akizuki was reported hit 3 times by search aircraft in addition to being hit by a strike, and is reported sunk. She joined 21 xAK aside from the one taken by a sub. The fleet carriers' fliers had great exercise, although there were some losses. Flak was light as expected with such targets, but with so many planes in the air ops losses are inevitable (again see the plane losses data below).

The fleet carriers and their fast battleship escorts will head to Guam for replenishment, then will head west to cover support forces moving to Talaud-eilanden and a garrison for Sangi.

Various APA/AKA are being dispatched (after filling with supply) for Kaimana to pick up forces for the invasion of Kendari.

Burma saw only the expected Allied air attacks and our ground movements continue seemingly unspotted. The last of the armour has changed to strat mode and tomorrow will rail to Magwe.

The fleet carriers are about two days out of Guam, and replenishment there will probably take two days. The units for Sangi and Talaud-eilanden will all be ready when the carriers are ready to sail again, and the invasion forces for Kendari should be nearly ready by the time the carriers are ready for them. Additional support is on the way to Namlea to boost air operations from that base. Having Kendari - and Kolaka beyond - should allow us to shut down Balikpapan and Samarinda. Tarakan won't be far behind.

At first blush (one day of recon) Morotai looks empty and might occupied at the end of the above sequence of ops.

We finally got some AKE to finish loading at Wotje and rearm the CL and BB at Kwajalein. Those will again take up making the short run to bombard Roi-Namur.

BB Prince of Wales, at Eastern USA, has been changed from shipyard mode to pierside mode to see if we can better faster results overall by using that 500 naval support there. If so, the 20 flotation and 1 engine damage will be repaired in the ship yard after the 51 system damage is repaired.

The 3rd/A Division regiment has been added for 147 AV, 2 vehicles, and 42 guns. The mass consisting of four Indian infantry divisions and nine assorted Allied armoured units is departing Magwe for the two-day strategic road movement to Prome. There they will shift modes and, in company with the so-tasked units already at Prome (three American divisions, four combat engineer Bns, and eight assorted artillery units), proceed to the battle hex to the SE. The units already in the battle hex are shown above. The current AV total is 4,546; replacements are still being added. We have quite an air armada conducting daily strikes on the battle hex SW of Toungoo, and those groups will all switch to SE Prome on the day of the attack, or a day before if it becomes certain that surprise has run its course. In addition, a number of attack bomber, fighter bomber, and fighter groups have been training in low attack tactics continuously since they were used to support the last attack or, in many cases, since they arrived in theater. They will all strike to support the attack. Our ground troops will be hideously over stacked, but that is the price.

Much Allied activity in the Pacific and the eastern DEI, but all of it in line with what was noted yesterday. Little enemy activity noted.

Iwo Jima scouts as 27,140 troops, 180 guns, and 87 AFV. All units are 100% prepared for Iwo Jima, but the 1st USMC Div needs more replacements and if possible I want to afford them that. In the meantime, assault shipping will support the actions noted in the DEI, plus landing the Tinian invasion forces. Only two divisions anchor that force, so I expect the capture of Tinian to take longer than Guam or Saipan.

Lots of ships moving supply and fuel, plus moving troops to the right places. Some of the carriers will take tomorrow to replenish at Guam, the others are leaving Guam and Truk today and heading west to Talaud-eilanden and Sangi. Morotai is empty so an APD convoy is heading there straight away. We've moved a Spitfire group back to Kalao, which is now completely repaired. The support troops also have recovered their senses, but are still repairing disabled squads.

There is another Imperial unit moving up toward the battle hex SE of Prome. Again this could be a coincidence or it could signal the loss of surprise. All the units from Magwe have arrived at Prome and will now change mode prior to moving. The new unit appears to be regiment sized and should arrive in a a day or two, certainly before our forces can.

The IJN also bombarded Kalao, but damage was quite modest. They did damage a Spitfire and shoot down a couple more during a fighter sweep. In return our bombardment of Iwo Jima was much more effective, destroying several Bettys. I forgot to mention yesterday that our P-38 LRCAP shot down several Bettys that had a go at our cruisers on their way to Iwo Jima.

Although most raids against Kalao were well protected, the last one of the day came in without escort and lost probably 13 Helens after FOW is accounted for.

Based on posts that I loosely recall from developers, I think that most of the time that is abstracting the escort screen or pure chance preventing the sub getting into a position for a shot against a higher value target.

I was just happy for the Intel. Actually, I was even happier for the Intel on the other TF, which shows all warships. I do wonder if that one is screening some LCU transfer to the Bonins, because I can't see all those cruisers being stacked with a CVE in the IJN.

Still wondering if the main IJN carrier force is up north to pounce when the Bonins are invested, or out west waiting for an incursion into the Philippines.

Status: offline 		In my experience the risk of allied subs going after the escort is very high. I can´t remember the exact numbers (its in my old AAR) but I think well over 50% of my sub kills where PBs. Then another 10-20% or so was other types of escorts.

1,515 AV at Chungking.

One more day for the remaining assault units at Prome to finish converting out of strat mode. Unfortunately it looks as though a more major reinforcement of the battle hex is underway, with perhaps yet another division or two regiments on the way up from Rangoon. This of course might be in response to recon of our troops movements, which in the end simply can not be avoided. So air attacks and sweeps will switch to the unit(s) moving up as they should have the benefit of 0 forts.

A whole bunch of USA P-40N5 groups have arrived recently and they will help to flood the skies both in defense of our bombers and in warding off Imperial sweeps. There are more in transit and five Chinese Air Force groups will arrive in Calcutta by rail tomorrow. While the three size 9 front line airfields (Toungoo, Prome, and Bassein) can hold plenty air airframes there are already a tremendous number there, with support in place for only about 150 more. So some additional groups can be brought in, but more can be used to fill the gap for combat losses when depleted squadrons are rotated out.

Kalao was bombed and swept but our fliers did far better than theirs, losing only two for over a dozen of theirs. Two groups of sweepers came from Koepang, so P-38s and B-24s shall re-close that aerodrome.

With the occupation of Morotai we have reached parity in the number of bases possessed, 457 each side.

The same small carrier/heavy surface group is seen NE of the Bonins, while a large xAP convoy is at Daito Shoto. The main IJN carrier forces are unseen, no doubt by design.

Some of our fleet carriers were close enough to Talaud-eilanden that Hellcats intercepted Helens intent on hitting the small shore and boat squadron guarding the flag there. Tomorrow there will be most of a USA Base Group ashore and the airfield will begin building. Naval search will also begin tomorrow form that base, giving us our first look at the South China Sea (outside the Gulf of Siam) in quite a long time.

Our subs were involved in many, many combats, and finally in the last one of the day got an E.

1,742 AV at Chungking, which includes the 182 AV arrival of the 2nd New Chinese Corps.

The host at Prome is on the move. Likely all units will be in the battle hex and ready for combat in two days. The bombing strikes against the reinforcements coming up from Rangoon went pretty well for a jungle hex, owing to the targets being moving units, I think. They will be hit again tomorrow, then strikes will switch to the battle hex.

Support troops are unloading at Talaud-eilanden in spite of a mine field (no damage). A convoy should arrive at Sangi tomorrow, and all the fleet carriers will be in the area then as well. Supply convoys are farther away from those two bases but might be covered by fighters at Talaud-eilanden if the strip is built quickly enough. 11 Helens were shot down over that base today by carrier CAP.

The assault convoys for Kendari are nearing Kaimana where they will unload supply, then load up the assault forces. A convoy from Perth is nearing Darwin and carries the initial base forces for Kendari.

The small IJN carrier force is still NE of the Bonins and is covering a convoy unloading at Chichi Jima. The convoy at Daito Shoto now well NE of that island and retiring.

There is a horde of Imperial troops at Neikiang apparently moving toward Chungking.

The Empire flew Darth Vader in the skies over Burma today, and his minions took a toll on our bombers. It helped that only one out of three P-47 squadrons tasked with sweeping the target hex did so. Thank goodness for that one that did! See the bloody tally below. All B-24 losses have been replaced and almost all other losses as well.

Yet more reinforcements have left Rangoon for the battle hex. Now >38,000 troops are seen in the hex in between, although 5k or 10k were a garrison for that hex previously. It will be quite a battle. All of the armor has arrived in the battle hex, while all of the artillery, engineers, and infantry is still on the way.

The 2nd Fiji Commando Bn is now in place on Sangi, securing that outpost. The 11th Base Group is 98% ashore at Talaud-eilanden with much supply following in this and then in another convoy. Supply is two days out in 2x AKA for Sangi. A convoy with more troops and some supply will arrive at Morotai tomorrow, supply following to there too. Namlea air field has made size 3, and tomorrow P-38 sweeps of Makassar will begin.

With the auto-occupation of Majuro we have passed the Empire in number of bases owned. The Imperial garrisons at Roi-Namur and Jaluit are fading fast now. The P-47D25 has begun production, and I will probably equip two or three of the five P-47 squadrons in Burma with that version because that is the zone of most intense air control contention.

Our subs got a CL (Oyodo), but their subs hit CL Emerald at Ramree Island.

1,691 AV at Chungking.

There are 4,581 AV, 759 Engineers, 54 Engineer Vehicles, 43,581 Troops, 117,842 Second Line Troops, 2,536 Vehicles, and 1,850 guns in the battle hex SE of Prome. Stacking is 162,156 out of 70,000, or 232%. Enemy forces recon as 8 Units, 63,380 Troops, 491 Guns, and 205 AFV, but I expect one or two more units to arrive during the next day. The attack is ordered for tomorrow. Weather is forecast as 'overcast'. The air strikes today went well but did take some casualties from flak. Enemy CAP was handily overcome, and waves of Imperial bombers made little impact but did drop some ready made defensive forts into the jungle for their troops (see air losses below). Tomorrow the strikes will be joined by squadrons of A-20G, B-25H, Hurricane IV, P-39D, P-39N1, and P-40N5 (9 squadrons total) that have been training in LowG and Strafe skills.

A bunch of IJN subs made attacks - maybe they laid mines too? - at Ramree Island and as mentioned earlier one got Emerald. She is in tough shape with 31-71(62)-17(16)-5 damage. The fires are minor and she is in port so I think she will survive, but is out of the fight for a long time. In return we certainly sank one sub and put hurt on others. The final tally will be elusive as always. There are 479 thousand supply sitting on the docks at Ramree Island waiting for transport inland, so it's not like the Empire is about to stop the upcoming offensive for lack of supply. But fear not, yet more Imperial reinforcements are on the way!

Over at Kalao sweeps took out a number of Spitfires, raids hit the base, and DD McCall was sunk when the breeze from a low flying bomber capsized her. There is an IJN convoy at Makassar and two other TF are seen to the west (2 hexes) and the WSW (5 hexes). Kalao base in undamaged but only one spit is operational. That squadron will withdraw and another, of 16 planes, will move in. We have definitely spurred the IJN into action in this area.

Up at Cebu there are three separate TF seen. One is a convoy, one has several cruisers, and the other is only seen to have a heavy complement of ASW escorts and so is judged a convoy. There were three reports of a scout DB hitting a DD there, one a Shikinami class, one a Fubuki class, and one unspecified.

The unloading at Talaud-eilanden and Sangi goes well. T is 26% toward a size 1 airfield, so it looks like five or six more days before a fighter group can be brought in. The mines have been cleared. Unloading at Morotai is underway and will probably take two or three days. The assault shipping at Kaimana is mostly unloaded and should be finished tomorrow, then start loading forces for Kendari. The support troops for Kendari will take up station off Kai-eilanden and so be ready to follow the combat troops in as soon as the port is captured. The sweep over Makassar found nothing and the P-38 jockeys must rest (29 fatigue) from the long, high altitude combat flight.

Here are today's air losses. Scant comfort, but a small measure of revenge for yesterday.

An observation: The Burma front has been static for a long time due to the large force the IJ has committed there. Frankly, were I you, I think I would leave it that way or do a seaborne end round on him to unhinge the position. Personally, given your marked success in the Pacific, I would engage in a determined sitzkreig (sp?) and pursue the Pacific route and the DEI routes with gusto. A lot of IJ troops will be left in Burma to be repatriated after the war.

Obviously, he has built some formitable defenses at Iwo and Haha and Chichi (sounds like a Mexican dance) Is there a reasonable chance to bypass them and go straight to Okinawa in the near future? I ask because he seems to have a lot of navy committed to the DEI and well away from action closer to the Home Islands?

Your strategy of holding him by the nose in Burma and kicking him in the posterior in the Pacific/DEI seems a wise course.

Oh how I miss the game, but I just cannot bring myself to start again. Playing Distant Worlds is a poor alternative, but I have enjoyed it even if against AI only.

If this axis does not work (with adequate patience), that is exactly what I will do. Part of the stalemate in Burma is due to the need of Allied troops to help hold the last redoubt in China, but that just is what it is. As the RN carrier force becomes available, opening a second axis into the DEI will be realistic (if dangerous!), whereas prior to that the only option has been 'send the troops elsewhere for use'.

The forces for Okinawa need a while yet to prepare and to recover (replacements) from Saipan, where most of them were last in combat. Iwo Jima, except for the required shock attack (which is like saying, 'except for the 500 pound gorilla'), might be like Saipan or Guam. Of course there could be a surge of troop strength before we get on the ground there.

Recently spent a bunch of PP to get a lot of Chinese infantry units into Burma. That gets them upgraded and using supply closer to the source to provide replacement squads. While they are not super offensive units, at least they can contribute to the holding part while other units either punch a hole or pull out for action elsewhere.

The only saving grace is the supply (-). As Imperial reinforcements are on the way, the casualty-AV-adjusted AV ratios do not help. All of the armour and engineer units have gone in to reserve to speed recovery. We currently have 3,913 Av there, a reduction of 701 from pre-battle.

The air strikes will continue out. There were a number of groups that struck targets outside the battle hex. I assume that their target orders were lost due to target units either combining or dividing. Two B-24 groups even flew separate strikes on a unit far into China at Neikiang - a little off! The rest of the approach is less clear. can we try and take advantage of the supply situation (which I previously had thought the Empire had solved)?

Ralph Talbot will make her way to Darwin and then to a shipyard. The full Spitfire squadron at Kalao was effectively knocked out as sweeps and raids followed the bombardments, so they have pulled out. At Kaimana the Kendari invasion force begins loading today. Unloading of troops continues at Morotai.

The various units slated to invest Tinian are on their way to other Mariana Islands bases for transfer to the assault convoys.

Daito Shoto airfield expanded to size 1. I have a feeling that it is planned to use Daito Shoto as part of a kamikaze onslaught during the approach to Okinawa, after we have activated the little beasties by capturing Iwo Jima.

This DD TF is moving to flank the former position of the IJN light carrier force. The purpose is to either intercept or be discovered out there and give DAW HQ more to consider.

I have no reason to believe it was a sync bug. FOW is pervasive, but I never bother to mention the 'falsely reported sunk' messages replaced by some other similar ship 'reported sunk'. My guess is that better than 50% of the time it's actually another ship similar to the one reported.

Two hexes NW Iba (on Luzon) a 4-ship TF heading SW is sighted with 1x CA and 2x TK. I think it more likely that the TK are CV of some variety. Five hexes E Mersing a 4-ship TF is sighted with 2x CA heading E. There are also various cruisers seen at Manila, some in convoy escort some in TF. It is possible that the IJN is gathering strength to oppose a move into the Philippines. If so, that's good because we are not moving on the Philippines at this time and it's always good to make the IJN burn fuel.

Roi-Namur appears to be empty and the garrison at Jaluit appears a day or two from destruction. Troops are preparing to land and expedite the change in administration.

The unloading of supply and troops continues at the various points previously mentioned in the eastern DEI with more on the way. One of the carrier TFs refueled.

The invasion forces for Kendari have completed loading troops and are now loading supply.

Here is that DD TF now ordered to make its run.

Our DD TF up north found nothing, and worse yet, was not found. They took on quite a bit of incidental damage from the high speed run and will disband at Truk for TLC. A fighter sweep of Iwo Jima found no Imperials willing to play.

Tomorrow troops for Tinian will begin unloading on various other Mariana Islands in preparation for loading on assault shipping.

Here is a look at the Celebes Sea. Our fleet carriers will stay put for probably two more days, then head SW to cover the invasion of Kendari. An IJN CL TF was seen in the eastern Java Sea during the turn so I expect a bombardment of either Kalao or Salajar, or they are getting into position to oppose invasions. A fighter sweep of Makassar found nothing.

There are more units approaching Chungking from the west from both Neikiang and the hex between. At least one unit is pulling out of Chungking heading in that same direction.

All of the armour from the battle hex SE Prome has reached Prome for recovery. The lessened crowding is speeding recovery of the infantry still in the battle hex as well.

The single-CL bombardment of Rangoon went well. Another (with more modern 6 inch guns) is on for tonight.

A bunch of engineers will land overnight at Talaud-eilanden and most likely the airstrip will finally make size 1 tomorrow. Fighters will move in the day after and the fleet carriers will then depart for Kendari.

Our 8x DD TF is at Cagayan (unmolested by Imperial aircraft!) but their quarry is east of Panay. They will withdraw to Babeldaob to refuel, then make for the Talaud-eilanden/Sangi area to support operations there.

The remaining convoys of troops for Tinian are still en route.

Troops will land on Roi-Namur either tomorrow or the day after. Jaluit now appears empty and troops and ships are being rounded up for a landing.

Our subs got an LSD, an xAP, and two xAK. Their subs got a YMS. We have a parade of subs going back to Pearl Harbor for repairs and I am sure that there are others damaged that I just didn't look hard enough to find this turn.

1,619 AV at Chungking. 13 of the increase in AV is due to the arrival of a base force, but the rest must be due to repair of disabled squads. Given that many squads were disabled from bombing today, that is quite surprising and might signal that there is some hope for at least putting up an even tougher resistance than I thought.

The armoured units have recovered quite quickly at Prome. The question of exactly what to do next looms, as I am loath to hit the same spot. The British carrier fleet is not quite ready for offensive operations. The Imperial troop count in the battle hex (SE Prome) is now almost 86,000, almost as high as that near Toungoo. There are also now 5 units SW of the battle hex, between there and Rangoon. Counting the previously scouted garrison of 2 units and ~5,000 troops in that spot I figure that there are 3 artillery or (more likely) anti-tank units making their way to the battle hex. I am withdrawing the 3 American infantry units (2x USA ID + 1x USMC Div) to Prome to facilitate taking replacements. And the West African Division for the same reason plus to recover morale (now only 45!). The commander is pretty decent and there are slim pickings to replace him, so I don't want to spend the PP.

One P-47D2 group at Bassein has upgraded to P-47D25. Given the great gap in P-47 replacements that occurs later, I am going to try and nurse the supply as much as possible.

A whole bunch of mines were cleared at Guam. Some mines were found and cleared at Salajar but there are no mine sweepers there to do a proper job. Roi-Namur is ours even as ships enter the lagoon. Troops will begin boarding tonight for Jaluit.

Talaud-eilanden airfield has reached size 1 as hoped, and two fighter squadrons have transferred in to protect shipping in the area. One USMC 18-plane F4U-1A group, and one 25-plane USA P-39N1 group, both with very experienced pilots. The carriers will now head directly toward Kendari and should take two days to reach station there. The invasion convoy (unspotted so far) is standing one hex SW of Namlea and will require only one day to rendezvous with the battle fleet. The carriers have been doing their anti-submarine/keep IJN carriers from guessing the exact range dance around their present position, and today's dispositions brought some within range of this bold Imperial convoy at Jolo.

Although there are no fighters in the area, there are now 3x DD at Salajar to protect the 2x AVD that just arrived and dropped anchor. A 9-ship squadron of Catalina also has moved there to extend patrols farther across the Java Sea and to the Indian Ocean side of Java. In addition to aiding our submarines, IJN carriers will have a much tougher time surprising our own carriers as they stand off Kendari. There is also an enemy convoy at Makassar, which DAW HQ must now deem to be imperiled. We have support units on the way to Salajar - and more to Kalao - but it will be a bit before they arrive. Until then the airfield at Salajar will continue snail's pace construction.

The units for Tinian should be finished unloading tomorrow or the day after in the Marianas Islands, then perhaps a day to put the right ships in the right spots to load them.

The supply(-) that the Imperial troops SE of Prome got in the recent battle really surprised me. I thought that the Empire had remedied their supply woes in that area. What is behind the recent shortage? The Marianas garrisons that we have encountered so far were bountifully supplied, so they must have had priority. The campaign to take Chungking certainly requires significant supply. Could it be that the Empire is getting tight enough on supply that big supply runs to Burma are simply not high enough on the priority list?

To answer your question, I have a stock game in late 1943 where I have an overland route from Singapore to Manchuria (albeit without Changsha) and if my SLOCs were cut it would quickly result in catastrophic economic meltdown. As I've been reading I've actually been wondering why you weren't more aggressively interdicting his supply routes, although it seems like your subs have been doing a fine job on their own.

I really concentrated the assault shipping for the Mariana Islands campaign. When it comes to landing 6 divisions plus armor, arty, etc. for one invasion there just isn't enough of it to go around in 1943. I could have pushed earlier with more risk in the eastern DEI but it would have been a double whammy - mostly merchant shipping and very little air cover. I've got lots of CVE now, in fact I have more than a dozen that have yet to sortie on an operation because their pilots are training.

The route of advance to Okinawa is aimed mostly at interdicting supply, etc. Making additional strategic bombing bases available is a secondary objective, and of course, future offensives from there.

Taking bases on the Indochina coast, the speculative operation posed in the graphic above, is solely aimed at interdicting supply, etc. but future operations could also originate there. The reason I'm considering it is I suppose those bases would be less strongly defended than other bases astride the mainland side of the supply line, and they are less exposed to attack from major Imperial bases.

Burma was intended as a breakthrough to move through Thailand, Indochina, and Malaya. As you see it's turned into a giant holding operation. At this point its strategic value is in tying up lots of Imperial troops, both directly and in China (which depends on Burma for its lifeline). There is always the possibility of cutting of and destroying large formations as the Allies get more ability to make major landings behind the defense.
