I'll skip most of the front this turn. Two attacks in the north. The Finnish armor divisions loses most of its tanks. I never noticed the huge penalty for German units fighting under Finish command (50%).

Two attacks in the North again. Getting closer to cutting Leningrad off.

Plenty of attacks in the south this turn. And an encirclement threat at Dnepropetrovsk will make sure that things keep moving.

Three attacks in the North. I'm getting ahead of myself.

The garrison of Dnepropetrovsk has been relieved. I continue to slowly push the Germans west.

He counterattacks frequently. Quite often actually. Sometimes the attacks fail. 2:1 in men and artillery is just not enough.

Much to my surprise Leningrad is only protected by a security regiment. I almost missed it. A Cavalry Corps is enough to kick the garrison out of the city. I have a Mechanized Corps in the vicinity but decide not to move it into the city. It was recently formed and has only 5 CV and I don't like mechanized troops in urban terrain. A mistake? Probably.

His counterattack pushes back two Rifle Corps and one Rifle Division. My own attack in this sector fails. The only good news is that his success comes with a hefty price.

The bridgehead gets bigger and bigger. For a couple of turns now I have turned air interdiction on. I always turn it off in 41 and 42 especially for the Axis because the AI makes absolutely insane decisions. But now it seems to be relatively safe. I have acceptable losses and continually use up his fighters.

I think the Red Air Force cost him that attack. His final adjusted CV actually went down, unusually. If it hadn't, he would've won that fight. You shot down a bunch of his bombers and got the bulk of yours through. The amount of planes you are getting into these combats is pretty high, 200-300 fighter bombers and 80-100 bombers (mostly shturmoviks I'm guessing) is no joke. Like everything else in this game, the Red Air Force is well ahead of the curve here and has reached effective parity with the Luftwaffe and moving steadily towards outright superiority.

In a word - yes :) but one you can afford.

I see what you are saying. His adjusted CV should go up because he is attacking and the attacker is favored in this game. Bombers could be the explanation for that. Another explanation would be that it is XXX Corps attacking. Those are the units I destroyed during mud I believe. Could it be a morale/experience issue?

The bombers are all IL-2 or IL-2M.

Mechanized Corps has a lot of tanks and their CV values will go down in dense terrain, in turn the infantry component will be stronger. In a word it's better to have Mech Corps, than a Tank Corps in a city :)

Steady progress in the south. North of the Dnepr he is setting up a new defense line behind rivers. I will wait for blizzard. Look at the fighter losses!

Very tight battle at Pushkin. Didn't expect these odds. City and urban fighting is unpredictable.

It seems to me that he has his strongest forces in this sector. One attack per turn is all I can achieve.

The south is a different story. I am planning a massive push in this sector. The 9 artillery divisions will be used here as soon as they reach 45 morale. I got to greedy attacking a 5 CV stack and two reserve activations screwed up my plans.
