Any Allied dogs here planning on Matrix Fantasy Football this year? There's one spot left in the Matrix Pro Leagues. I see Kido Butai and Greenwich Meridian are present already. Others?

I'm in the Matrix Basic league again this year, trying to defend my last place finish from last season.

I'm also in a league at work, which will be plenty for me to keep up with.

Ain't that the truth. If I can get my kid off mine, my payments will drop over $100 a month.

Parachute use to prevent death and major trauma related to gravitational challenge: systematic review of randomised controlled trials

Excerpt:
quote:

A call to (broken) arms
Only two options exist. The first is that we accept that,
under exceptional circumstances, common sense
might be applied when considering the potential risks
and benefits of interventions. The second is that we
continue our quest for the holy grail of exclusively
evidence based interventions and preclude parachute
use outside the context of a properly conducted trial.
The dependency we have created in our population
may make recruitment of the unenlightened masses to
such a trial difficult. If so, we feel assured that those
who advocate evidence based medicine and criticise
use of interventions that lack an evidence base will not
hesitate to demonstrate their commitment by volun-
teering for a double blind, randomised, placebo
controlled, crossover trial.

The Canadian Lancaster finally managed to leave Canada today, which means Operation Panicky Albatross (or whatever the hell the whole thing is really called) is fully underway. Chaos on the roads of Lincolnshire is expected on Friday. Seeing as most of Lincolnshire is rural and sparsely populated the roads are mostly narrow, twisty and not all that great. A nice bonus is that RAF Coningsby is plonked nicely on the edge of Coningsby village with the main gate (and BBMF) only accessible through the village centre, which has almost nowhere to park. And despite being told it's not a good idea to come people have seen this as some sort of reverse psychology and that the station commander wants 10000+ people to cause chaos in England's sleepiest county!

At least it should be good for a giggle watching the scrum when both Lancs taxy in to park. Getting home might be a pain in the proverbial mind.

I think the first logical fallacy here is in the first sentence. In medicine, when trying something experimental, a novel treatment or therapy can always be applied to or compared to the commonly accepted standard of care or 'standard treatment'. It doesn't have to be compared to naught or a placebo for experimental validation.

So in this case, a ramjet-style parachute could be compared to the round 'static line' chutes of old to determine efficacy or 'treatment validity'. To suggest that one needed experimental validation of a hypothesis only attainable by killing half one's patients is folly.

Oh...wait a minute...that was a joke, wasn't it?

Actually... it wasn't completely a joke. Look at the link and you see it was actually a published article, written by medical researchers as a satirical criticism of the most fervent advocates of evidence based medicine. Read the whole article, it's a hoot.
