December 1941 in the snow! SPWaW 7.1, 7000 points.

We have each played a turn. Dodger scores the early victories with his air, as I blindly pound away at likely positions with some Nebelwerfers. He leads a recon of positions with a pack of BA armored cars.

3 turns down for me, 2 for Shoe.

My meager airforce has called it a day, but now I have spread my troops enough to do without their recon.

Looks like Shoe is going for the Barbarossa style mechanized assault, I'm trying to slow down the juggernaut in order to bring more troops to the line. My main problem is lack of transportation. Running around in open country with nebelwerfers firing all around is not anyone's idea of fun.
I don't think I have spotted the shwerpunkt yet, I hope to do this before it's too late.

Since I'm with the Finns for the first WC round as well, I've got to cheer for dodger in this one. Go dodger! :)

Ski troops I can deal with (So far) it's those impervious T-34's with the magical rubber coating and the Zis-5 AAA that mows down troops like the combines in the wheat fields, that are the real thorns in my side. So far, the Airforce has been his real killer, so I hope that they are about done, so that I might get back to grabbing up V-hexes!

It does seem that there is no "schwerpunkt", rather a frontal attack, but with mechanized forces that can switch very quickly.

I'm managing to hold my dear opponent off, but his tanks and HTs are mowing my ski troops like lawn in the north and center.

In the south, a forested hill is being contested. I almost managed to take it, but there are some combat engineers which are holding on.

Looks like the lines have formed, now we'll see where (if anywhere) they move.

Dodger holds the V-hexes in the North and the South, while I have the center.

In the south, a forested hill commands the terrain just south-west of the V-hexes, and last turn the Fins overran the hill with ski troops. Spent this turn trying to throw them back off, so that I might overwatch my move to the V-hexes. Managed to knock out a T-34 with 4 shots from a pair of Pz-III's (Hoorah!)

The center has a North-south ridge with the V-hexes on my side. I hold these, but fear the Finn lurks on the back-side.

In the North there is another North-south ridge, with the V-hexes in a small hamlet on his side of the ridge. He has his side well fortified with AT and AAA guns that blast anything/anyone that tries to go over or around. This will be the tough nut to crack, so I will probably save this one for last.

Time to work on capturing that hill, and driving on those southern V-hexes

Hordes of tanks and HTs, but I have noticed one thing missing...infantry.

Without spotters and screeners, those tanks are effectively mobile gun emplacements, vulnerable to ambushes. I nailed 3 tanks and 2 HTs this turn.

All I need to do is eliminate his infantry and throw some smoke. That should give me the edge. Little worried about the north though, it's starting to rain 150mms on the defenders. Can't help thinking that maybe I need more than a few AA guns and ski squads to hold him off.

No change on the front.

I still continue to stack up dead Ski troops, but I am starting to loose too many vehicles.

The hill in the south is where the hottest fighting is at. If I can manage to take that hill, the southern V-hexes are a short hop from there!

Hill in the south is now firmly in my control. Last of enemy infantry is pushed off the western edge or killed where they stand. My opponent seems to expect a rush out of the woods at any moment, as his tanks and guns are stacked up some hexes from the forest edge in a defensive setup. As in the Winter War with Russia, the Finnish ski troops are in control of the woods, leaving only the open terrain for their armored foes.

I have deployed a T34 in those forest to make snipe away at enemy tanks from cover. One tank per turn seems to be the going rate with little or no risk.

The center VHs are being attacked from 3 directions, with artillery support thrown in. Moderate casualties on both sides.

Relatively quiet in the north, enemy 150mms softening up my position, but the prebombardment (if that's what it is) is giving me time to move some more flak guns into position.

It's starting to look good, I am soon firmly established on 2 sets of VHs with the third set ripe to fall.

Contrary to popular beliefs, the southern hill is still contested!

If that T-34 survives the next turn I will be impressed indeed.

The Fin may be pressing me a little hard right now, but it is still very early in the game to be counting chickens from unhatched eggs. Just completed turn 6 of 25.

The north and the south are firmly in enemy control, but the center is still very much in contention, with me holding 4 of the 5 hexes in my control, and bruised and battered ski troops running back into the woods.

There are still plenty of tanks that need Ski troop guts for tread grease!:D :D

The meatgrinder has crashed into splattering motion!

Only the north front remains relatively quiet, but in the center, attack and counterattack are crashing together, unfortunately for the attacking Finns, the counterattack seems more productive at the moment.

The main concentration of forces is in the south, though. The pesky T34 in the woods sparked a massive counterattack, which romped through ski troops on their way to the front. Undaunted, they rallied quickly and realized the enemy is moving in without infantry support.

This lack of support resulted in several burning hulks on the forested hill. The T34 managed to escape behind a screen of friendly infantry, but with damage to it's suspension, it's not going to be effective in hit and run attacks.

Two troops of infiltrators have met with very limited success and will be wiped out by the end of this turn.

Counter Attacks have regained all but one of the center V-hexes, and thrown back the Finn Ski troops on the hill in the south. Managed to finally kill that T-34 on that hill and a couple of AAA trucks that were a real pain in my side.

The luckiest stroke in the battle can be claimed by the Germans. An infiltrating squad appeared right on top of the Finn HQ. Lucky for me, too bad for my opponent!:D

Now you've done it. Finnish units are usually made up of people living in the same area, their COs are people who are well respected by the neighborhood. Hence, you just pissed off a lot of people with guns, Adolf.

Tanks continue to push my line backwards on the hill in the south, but advancing through woods can't happen forever without losses. This is the time when the famous rubber will meet the equally famous road.

Now that the Finn is fully occupied in the South with that forested hill, I make my move in the North.

Manage to seize one V-hex, and there does not seem to be a lot of troops arrayed to defend them. I have seen a T-34 lurking over here, just hope that my arty has him buttoned and hiding until I can get established around these Northern V-Hexes. Smoke and Arty is what freed me for this move, as troops that were protecting the V-hexes were weakened by the bombard, and the smoke should shield me from the AAA that was being used for protection.

Only time will tell if my timimg was good, as it is still pretty early in the game.

Those "few suppressed" defenders in the north may prove a little bit more tenacious than you think. 3 tanks and a HT are smoking and infantry squads are running for their lives.

In the south, I finns occupy the long contested hill, but will go no further as it's open ground overlooked by 88s and tanks.

Central victory hexes have fallen also after a bitter battle, remnants of enemy tanks make a delaying action.

OUCH!

Should have waited a little longer before making my move. Let Arty work in there a little longer.

Now I am in trouble!

My attack in the North has been repulsed! V-hexes still in the dreaded Finns hand.

In the center, the Finn has taken most of the v-hexes, and I am not sure I have enough force to get them back.

In the South, we abondon all hope of chasing the Ski troops off of the forested hill. The v-hexes still lie secured in Finn hands on the back side of that hill.

I continue on the off chance that I might accumulate enough points for victory, but it definitely is not looking very good!:( :(

"Firmly in control" is something I wouldn't use about center or north. Especially in the center tanks are counterattacking, and in the south I may soon find myself surrounded in the forests.

Luckily for me, I have a decent array of AA guns, that in addition to hindering excessive flanking maneuvers occasionally shoot down a stuka as well.

Northern battle is still raging with, attacking troops are sitting in the middle of an artillery bombardment, while defenders snipe at them.

Now that I am in the thick of it, I am not sure that I can salvage a victory.

Terrain certainly favors the Finn side of the map in all but the center.

Looks like the determining factor for German victory will be the quality of the reserves.

I have made some very costly moves in this match.:mad:

In the north, artillery is sweeping the narrow strip where enemy attack stalled. Infantry is being swept away and I suspect that all tanks will not survive this either. If I can crush the enemy here swiftly, I can make this into a breakthrough in his rear.

In the center, the battle is still grinding, when a tank is destroyed, another takes it's place. Unless the enemy runs of out reserves I will be in trouble.

In the south, things are quieting down. Tanks that venture too close to the woods are destroyed, but so are ski troops that brave the edge.

A stuka managed to bomb my ATG, but barely escaped. That one's not coming back.

Just as I think the battle in the north is turning in my favor, with most tanks out of commission and infantry moving backwards, I see a new wave of reinforcements coming in (looks like a company of mechanized engineers split between north and south). In the south one of the halftracks develops a sudden mechanical fault on the way in and falls by the wayside.

Looks like there's no letup in the fighting. I'm losing troops and light tanks left and right, but I am also causing some damage. 4 tanks and a halftrack this turn. But more seem to spring up constantly.

If this keeps up, I may need to resort to reinforcements myself.

My reinforcements are here, unfortunately a favorable outcome for me in this battle relies on their performance.

The V-hexes lie in the finn's control, and the German counter-attack will either snatch victory from his hands, or die a bloody red death on the shores of defeat.

That counterattack is dying on and around the northern hilltop. Last of enemy resistance there is being surrounded to prevent escape.

The center seems to have folded completely as well. Some interfering fire from far off or hastily moved 88s will slow me until I can throw smoke.

Enemy is still strong in the south though. It seems like a stalemate, but with things going my way on the two other fronts, he must either attack me now or move troops to protect his rear.

I expect him to attack, as protecting the rear is area is the safe move, which will not bring about a change in the fortunes of battle, while a successful attack in might. However unlikely at this point.

"All the settings sound OK, but one thing I'd like to ask. Instead of august, let's play it in the winter. As that's probably the only way I can counter atleast a little bit the german equipment superiority (halftracks, rockets, etc.). I took the liberty of setting up a game in December (or was it november). But if you don't like a winter game, then go ahead and create a game in august."

I'm sorry feel I've cheated you in the selection process. And like I stated in my email, I'm ready to fight my next battle on your terms, should we meet again in WC2003. Or even, if it's allowed, a reverse of this game. With me playing Germany and you playing Finland in Dec '41.

Hey, not feeling cheated. After all I did agree to the terms. Just feeling like I got the "Ol'snow pulled over the halftrack" routine by blindly going along with the flow. Live and learn. Should be getting my turn off to you shortly. No hard feelings, just got to proove my mettle in the next two games is all.

I definately will be watching my backside, looking for those ellusive Ski troops in the future.
