Perhaps expecting only my Paratroops, the 75th Indian Brigade crosses the river from Dacca and shock attacks our troops at Comilla. I had flown in the 21st Ind Mixed Brigade to support the 1st Raiders and that worked so far. The attack gets 1:3 against our level 1 forts (which don't drop). However I don't have the supply to risk a counter attack. The goal here is to hold the base to prevent any reinforcement of Chittagong via rail.

We hold at Comilla.

DEI/N Australia
The 28th Division unloads at Broome with light casualties. No air attacks or enemy ships interfere so far, so that is good.

Philippines
Our stack attacks at Digos today and the 2nd/101st PA Battalion that was present surrenders rather than retreating. The result was 177:1. Onward to Davao.

China
The airplanes at Hami continue to attack our troops, but it is for not as we capture the base with a 3:1 (92:29) result. Lots of airplanes are apparently captured. 2,300 Chinese casualties plus the intel screen says 23x SB-III, 19x I-16-III and 9 I-15-III are captured. Good day for air VPs - 54 planes lost for Allies, and 5 for Japan.

The other big attack of the day is at Hengyang where we get a 3:1 (302:76) result against fort level 3. Forts drop to 2 so I am hopeful we can take this base on the next attack. Casualties are about 7 to 1 in our favor.

The Chinese attack between Kweilin and Liuchow again, but with our newly arrived tanks in the proper combat mode today, they Chinese only get 1:5. We do have some tanks disabled though, so we probably won't last here forever.

Submarines
I-169 take a shot at AVD Mackinac near Pearl Harbor, but misses.

Lots of night strikes by Wellingtons, Hudsons and Bleheims come in against Akyab. We lose some planes on the ground - 2 Oscars and 3 Anns to be specific, but the airfield damage is negligible. I'll put some Oscars on night CAP tomorrow since I have enough here to still provide daytime CAP as well.

We have a couple ships unloading supplies at Cox's Bazar and 14x Albacore's attack in two waves. Two of our ships are sunk and a third damaged. I think about 1000-2000 supplies were lost in the sunk ships. Never a good thing for Japan.

DEI/N Australia
In the night, we continue to unload troops at Broome. Additionally, an enemy patrol boat, PG Isabel, comes by to investigate, but our old friends CL Natori and company find Isabel and sink the surprised ship. Isabel only gets a couple shots off before she is sunk at about 10,000 yards. Our ships take no hits.

Once the sun comes up, destroyer Thanet comes by as well. Although not surprised, we do manage to cross the T agaisnt the enemy ship. We again take no hits and Thanet disengages in rough shape, likely sinking later.

Defending the troop ships at Broome

Pacific
We unload parts of the 21st Division at Savaii today against light opposition, one squad is lost, although 60 are disabled.

South of Suva and Pago Pago the 4th SNLF Coy captures Late Island.

China
In support of the ground assault at Hengyang, we send everything we can at the enemy from the air taking out several hundred enemy troops. The attack succeeds easily with a 13:1 result. We lose 43 men, the Chinese lose 5,800. The shattered Chinese units retreat southwest across the river. We have some troops on the way to that hex so we should be able to bounce them back across the river in such a way that they will be west of Hengyang. Industry was only lightly damaged so we will get some valuable supply production to add to what is already being produced at Shaoyang and Siantang. More importantly, there is now only one open route into Changsha and that is the trail down from the northwest.

The third base in the triangle west of Changsha is captured

Our Nells and Anns hit the enemy troops at Comilla just to make sure they aren't resting too easily. 71 enemy troops are disabled.

All of our Sallys in the area attack Chittagong in support of today's deliberate attack. The forest protect the enemy, but the attack was made anyway in the hope of adding some disruption to their troops.

The attack near Chittagong is finally decisive. We get a 2:1 result and several enemy units (5) retreat. Additionally one unit is destroyed. This leave three units present that we should be able to push out now that there are less enemy troops present.

DEI/N Australia
As we finish up our unloading at Broome, yet another enemy surface ship tests the defenses. Today it is DD Pillsbury. 0% moonlight sees Natori and company get as close at 5,000 yards, but neither side scores any hits before the ships part ways.

In the daylight hours, Natori tracks down Pillsbury again though and this time plenty of shells land on the enemy destroyer while we again take no hits. The enemy ship is sunk.

Natori claims another victim

After that battle, Natori heads to Timor to rearm, and while en route stumbles on a couple undefended xAK's, but apparently the TF commander decides it isn't worth chasing them and the TF's go there separate ways.

On the continent, we launch our assault at Broome and easily capture the base with a 37:1 result. The Broome RAN Base Force is destroyed and the road is open to Derby. One SOC-1 Seagull is captured.

Gaining a foothold on Australia

Pacific
As we fight at Savaii, apparently a few troops go next door to secure Upolu as it is occupied today.

The assault on Savaii goes well and the base is captured from the Samoa Detachment. A nice prize is the 10x PBY-5 Catalinas we capture on the ground.

China
We are now showing more assault value at Liuchow than the enemy. We might be able to capture this base (again) soon.

Apparently yesterday's battle wasn't as decisive as I though. We attack near Chittagong and only get a 1:1 result. Mainly due to a shortage of supply. We'll try again as soon as supply level are back up where they should be. Can't wait to get past this hex!

Pacific
Dinah's at Horn Island spot some AM's and PT boats at Cooktown and manage to score a hit on an AM.

Bettys from Tabiteau attack a pair of destroyers at Canton Island. 13 P-39D are on CAP but we manage to slide right by them. No hits on the planes, but I'll reel in the Bettys until we have neutralized the airfields at Canton with either carrier sweeps or battleship shells.

With Savaii and Pago Pago secure, the next few days will involved getting the 8th and 21st divisions loaded up to attack Canton Island. I'll try to get a naval guard unit on my two LSD's as well so at least part of the invasion is not heavily disrupted by the landing. I don't have much faith in our AKs and these two divisions are tired, but the clock is ticking. To try and help, I've got most of my battleships headed to Canton and all the carriers are converging there as well. The fireworks should start near the end of June. Hopefully was can do enough damage from the sea and air that our land units will be able to take the place. If we can take Canton, it will be the last notable place we attack in the Pacific, and I'll start setting up for defense and counterattack opportunities.

China
Plenty of air attacks both at our armor river crossing in the Chungking valley, as well as west of Changsha where we take advantage of clear terrain to inflict damage on the Chinese.

Recon has been showing a single unit across the river (see the map below, south east of Chengtu battle) so our tanks were a bit surprised to find two units and one of them actually had some assault value (the other was showing zero). In any case, our tanks only get 1:7 on the shock attack but thankfully take no casualties while inflicting 172. Now we will retreat back across the river and try to get back to the safety of the jungle while our air slows down our pursuers. If we get forced to retreat, we will lose tanks. Should be an interesting few turns coming up.

Up north, we manage to catch up to the enemy for a change and get to force them to retreat again with a 3:1 result. One unit actually doesn't retreat which means I can take advantage of my armor's speed and put them on reserve/pursuit.

Finally the Chinese attack at Chengtu but we hold pretty well. They have 32,000 troops, we have 18,000 but light urban, forts and better troops are on our side. The Chinese get 1:3 odds, no fort drop and lose 4,150 men to our own 1,335. Thankfully only 4 squads and 1 gun are destroyed, so if they give us a break some of those disabled will recover before the next attack. These Chinese have supplies, probably because of the proximity of Chungking.

Our surrounded defenders fight off the Chinese

Fusan's port goes to size 8. Even more ships can be 'ported' here now as they move resources over the channel. From what I understand, that increases the draw of everything to Fusan. Already I've seen some improvement as there have been a couple times in the last few weeks that Port Arthur has dropped about 200-300k of resources that move to Fusan.

Our H6K4 factory auto-upgrades to H6k5. We won't build any though. I'll manual change this factory over to H8K1 next month when they become available.

Almost not worth mentioning... HDML P 8 is reported to have been sunk near Soerabaja on Dec 16, 1941

India/Burma
Some Wellys and Hudsons attack Cox's Bazar port at night, but we don't have anything there, and the port isn't damaged.

On the plus side, in Burma we attack at Warazup and send the 2nd Assam Rigles into the jungle as we capture the base. This Regiment will now head back to Lashio and then towards Paoshan.

DEI/N Australia
In the northern part of Celebes, we occupy the dot base of Togian-eilanden with a SNLF Coy.

A couple waves of B-17E's attack Broome. I don't have any AV support yet, but had sent in our 8 Tojo's anyway. 11 then 4 B-17's face 5 then 2 Tojos. Damage to the airfield is pretty light, and we damage a B-17E, but lose a Tojo to ops. Aviation support, AA guns and Nicks are all on the way, so hopefully we'll be able to put up some defense soon.

Philippines
Our stack attacks at Davao today and captures the base with a 41:1 result. The Two small units present there retreat northeast into the mountain base. Our troops will follow the road around to the west and attack the mountain base first before moving on to Cagayan. PT-31, PT-32 and PT-33 were all scuttled to prevent capture.

China
Various air attacks continue. Including the attacks on the units that look to be chasing my armor. The tanks make it back across the river thanks to the 60 mile move rate, but now on the trails it might be a little trickier to outrun the Chinese. Hopefully our air attacks keep them out of move mode so we can get away.

You may recall we have a ton of artillery in Siangtan to fend off the 120,000 Chinese that are beseiging us. I don't bombard everyday due to supply, but today's bombardment did well, taking out almost 600 Chinese and 8 of their guns.

South of Hengyang we cross the river and shock attack the Chinese that had retreated a couple days ago. The Ankei SNLF was also there from yesterday having arrived from the east. The attack goes well with a 13:1 result and the Chinese lose another 3,200 troops to our 38. One unit is destroyed, the rest retreat back to the northwest as expected. I have a unit moving west from Shoayang to cut off any attempts by the Chinese to run northwest to Chihkiang.

Some of the movement and combat in China

The out of supply Chinese at Tienshui try and attack. 128,000 Chinese versus 39,000 Japanese results in a 1:11 result. About 7,000 Chinese casualties versus 2,200 Japanese, although far more Chinese are destroyed than ours.

They also try again at Chengtu, today getting another 1:3 result. They lose 1,900 troops to our 700, and no fort drop.

And lastly, up north our attack on the solo unit near Hami is successful with a 14:1 result, and our two tank unit pursue into the next hex. They will try an attack tomorrow.

Submarines
I-26 fires a couple torpedoes at DD Balch near Pearl Harbor but misses. I-26 also evades the ASW counterattack.

Other
I noticed an AKE sitting at Babeldaob had an upgrade so that started in place. It is a short one, just to add some AA guns.

Blenheims, Wellingtons and Hudsons all attack Cox's Bazar in the daylight today and we have a few Oscars on CAP. We manage to take down 3 Blenheims, and the rest manage to score a single Port Fuel hit.

Northeast of Lashio, we chase the British into China as we attack and capture the base of Bhamo. One of the enemy units are destroyed and the other 5 retreat towards Paoshan.

DEI/N Australia
16 B-17's hit Broome today and one Tojo rises to meet them. One B-17 damaged, and the Tojo makes it home. Damag to the airfield is pretty light again. We take no casualties and the enemy loses 1,065 men.

Pacific
A Dinah hits another PT boat on the eastern coast of Australia.

China
Along with some air support we launch a deliberate attack at Liuchow today and manage to retake the base! The result was 3:1 against level 1 forts and this sends 9 Chinese units retreating southwest which puts them out of the fight in the Kweilin-Liuchow-Kweiyang theater. We'll move some smaller units down there to ensure those Chinese don't get in a place to block our supply flows. Summary -

quote:

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 29545 troops, 322 guns, 55 vehicles, Assault Value = 758

Defending force 35981 troops, 193 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 677

Japanese adjusted assault: 901

Allied adjusted defense: 239

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1 (fort level 1)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Liuchow !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: leaders(+), preparation(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
1380 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 125 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 12 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 14 disabled
Guns lost 10 (1 destroyed, 9 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
11146 casualties reported
Squads: 462 destroyed, 7 disabled
Non Combat: 282 destroyed, 127 disabled
Engineers: 81 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 36 (35 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Units retreated 9

Victory at Liuchow... for now

Our tanks attack the retreating Chinese north of Hami, but it isn't quite enough as we only get a 1:2 result. 300 Chinese men are taken out though, most destroyed, and no tanks lost or disabled so that is nice.

The Chinese do not attack at Chengtu today, allowing us to recover some squads.

Submarines
I-25 finds an xAKL and attacks it on the surface near Pearl Harbor. 16 shell hits are enough to put the little transport under.

I-1 fires at a destroyer near Palmyra but misses. There is also a CM with the DD's so I suspect mines for either Palmyra or Canton Island.

Other
We lose a VP point at Pakhoi since we only have 15 out of 20 garrison points covered. One of these days I'll fix that, but assault points are at a premium in China.

Quiet day.

DEI/N Australia
18x B-17Es attack our troops that are on the move from Broome. We lose about 240 squads, mostly disabled, although we lose 2 destroyed tanks.

China
One of the units north of Hami is still remaining when our tanks attack and they easily send it running with a 12:1 result. No tanks lost, 144 enemy casualties.

We do a bombardment at Siangtan today, this one is even better than the previous one with 800 enemy casualties, including 42 enemy squads destroyed.

Other

Manadalay airfields hit size 3. Should be a couple more weeks until size 4 which will help bring the IJA bombers into the fray in India much more than they currently are.

Oscars bring down some Albacores

Albacores attack at Cox's Bazar, but our Oscar's do a better job with them today. Some get through and hit and sink another xAK. However, none of the Albacore's make it home. 14x were shown attacking, and the intel screen says 18 were shot down.

More importantly, we attack again near Chittagong and today get 5:1 results, forcing the last 3 enemy units to retreat to Chittagong. Our stack will roll into the bases ASAP, and then wait for one of the 56th/ elements to move into the jungle to fully surround the base. To the northeast of Chittagong, a SNLF para unit has been sitting for a while waiting to move southwest to open the hex side. Once all hexsides are red, then we will attack and hopefully take a big chunk of commonwealth LCU's out of the fight for a while.

DEI/N Australia
16x B-17s hit our advancing troops each of Broome. One Tojo on CAP damages one of the B-17s.

Pacific
I-2 fires at DD Monaghan but misses.

China
Our freed up troops from the capture of Liuchow arrive in the hex to the northeast of Liuchow just in time, as the Chinese shock attack here today. The results are 1:6 and the Chinese lose 3,400 men to our 350. I expect they will retreat back to Kweilin now and if so, we will send most of these troops up the road towards Kweiyang.

Other

We try some night bombing of Chittagong with Nells and Sallys and get two points of runway damage and a damaged P-40E in exchange for losing a Sally and two Nells.

Blenheims attack Comilla and disable out a squad of infantry.

DEI/N Australia
Near Broome, we have a decent CAP in the area of our troops, but they only lightly engage the B-17s. We damage 1 B-17E, but at least casualties are light on the 28th Division.

China
Our two tank units attack the retreating Chinese in the far north on the road to Urumchi. We only get 1:1 but do 310 casualties versus none for our tanks. Our infantry is in the hex now, but I suspect the Chinese units will exit the hex tomorrow.

The Chinese do a deliberate attack at Chengtu and get 1:4 results and are actually showing a negative supply modifier. We lose 3 destroyed squads and 47 disabled to their 147 destroyed and 180 disabled squads. They of course have lots more to throw at me, so hopefully our units will recover fast.

Allied bombers hit our stack moving on Chittagong today and come in escorted. We had some Oscars on LRCAP and they take some bombers down. What gets through does only light damage to our troops. No Oscars lost, and we get 5x Blenheim IV and 2x Hudson IIIa.

Oscars defend our troops

At Dimapur, then enemy Bombards and shows us what is there. The 70th British Division and 26th Indian Division are the main forces. We will airlift the last few squads of the 2nd Raiders and Yokosuka 1st SNLF out immediately. We've been evacuating them so the combat troops are all out, just looking to grab some of the support squads.

It is good to know these divisions are here, and underscores the need to eliminate the commonwealth troops at Chittagong soon so they can't combine with these two divisions. As long as I can keep fighting his divisions in groups of 1 or 2 I think we can keep up the momentum. Especially as we bring in IJAAF bombers and when we are fighting the lower experience Indian troops. Our divisions are getting up there in XP - the 48th Division is 110% TOE with 93 experience!

Enemy divisions spotted

DEI/N Australia
At Broome, SS KXI gets past my E escort and hits an xAK with two torpedoes sinking the ship and taking a support squad with it.

We manage to put up a better CAP over the 28th Division today and when 12x B-17E come to attack, we have 18 Nicks and 2 Tojos present. We manage to damage all the B-17s and despite the open terrain we don't lose any troops to the attack. We did lose 1 Nick to the bomber guns.

The nice news today was a victory in spite of my orders. I had told the 8th Tank to follow the 28th Division to Derby so they would cross the river together. However, the 8th tank, for whatever reason, crossed ahead of the 28th all by itself today. Thankfully, the 8th Tank manage to capture Derby with a 8:1 result. John wasn't expecting the base to be attacked so soon (he said in his email) and when the base went down several Allied planes were captured. The planes captured were 34x Kittyhawk 1A, 17x SBD-1 Dauntless and 4x PBY-4 Catalinas. Hopefully these were entire units so he'll be without them until they come back out of the queue. Don't know that for sure, but here's hoping. For the day air losses were 55 Allied and 6 Japanese.

The 8th Tank will immediately pursue the Derby RAN Base Force southeast on the road to the next base.

Pacific
A small xAKL heading to Tanna is hit and sunk by SS KXIII in the dead zone between Luganville, Guadalcanal and New Caledonia. The TF still has one xAKL which should be enough to move the small SNLF Coy at Tanna. I plan to use that SNLF to grab a couple little islands to the south so I have a little warning before Allied forces start to base there. I might even put some AV down there to give me better nav search coverage.

At Johnston Island a midget sub goes after a YO, but APD Calhoun intervenes and sinks Ha-8.

China
North of Hami, the 9th Separate Brigade is just a little slower then the other Chinese units and we manage to attack it getting at 172:1 result which causes the unit to surrender. That's is good since it is one less unit we will have to wear down at Urumchi.

No attack at Chengu giving our units a change to recover some squads.

Other
xAP Teika Maru arrives at Yokohama/Yokosuka
18th Tank Regiment arrives at Kagoshima, this unit will head to Northern Australia since it is an independent tank unit.

23x Blenheim IV's attack Akyab, but we are up north CAPing our troops moving to Chittagong, so no resistance is offered. The Blens get 8 runway hits and destroy an Oscar on the ground.

The Allies bombard at Dimapur, but they face 0 troops, 0 guns and 0 vehicles as our paratroops are successfully evacuated.

DEI/N Australia
SS KXI takes another shot at us at Broome, but thankfully misses its first target. It comes back later though and attacks another xAK on the surface, hitting with 5 shells and 2 torps sinking the ship, taking 4 squads with it.

B-17's hit the airfield at Derby, but that's okay since I didn't bring anything in yet. Not sure I will do anything with this airfield since it will all be recaptured by the Allies eventually.

China
Some Chinese units up north mange to occupy Kiuchuan. I'll send a small armored force up that way to wear them down. I can jump in and out and slowly kill them off since they are out of supply.

We finally get around to recapturing Kwangchowan on the south coast of China. There is still some LI left after the switch back so we'll get a trickle of supply out of there. WE also surrender two Chinese units, the A & B parts of the 64th Chinese Corps.

Took awhile, but we finally take Kwangchowan back

The Chinese do a deliberate attack at Chengtu again, getting a 1:4 result. Casualties are better than before, with 800 for us (4 destroyed squads) and 2100 for them (63 destroyed squads). They are showing supply negative modifiers so that is good - means that Chungking isn't enough to keep these troops in supply all the time.

They also shock attack at Chihkiang getting a 1:3 result. Casualties are light though, 128 for us and 370 for them.

Other
A couple PB's go into refit at Tokyo to get better depth charges and AA.

India/Burma
6x Blenheims attack Akyab at night but score no hits. Another dozen attack in the day and manage to hit an Oscar on the ground.

DEI/N Australia
We try a daytime attack on Darwin with 44x Bettys and 25x Zeros from Koepang. There is no opposition and we get 44 Runway hits and damage some Hudsons, B-17Es and DH-84 Dragons, but no destroyed airplanes.

Pacific
Mili goes to size 3 airfield.

China
We attack some of the Chinese chasing our tanks east out of the Chungking valley and meet one K81-A3 on CAP. That one planes manages to shoot down an Oscar even though outnumbers 22 to 1. Good pilot I guess! Our Sallys still get through and knock out 150 or so enemy troops.

When we bombard between Kwielin and Liuchow today there is only one Chinese unit, so most of them have retreated to Kweilin. We will try attacking this single unit and then pull back our units to try and make a run at Kweiyang.

6 Blens attack Akyab at night again, but we have some night CAP up with 75% moonlight. We manage to take one Blenheim down.

Night CAP scores a kill

6 Anns from Akyab attack the xAK Testbank at Chittagong. 2 Mohawks provide CAP but our Oscars get the Anns through. Unfortunately the Anns miss their target.

DEI/N Australia
Having rested up one of our SNLF Coys, we get back to some dot base cleanup. Today we occupy Sepandjang east of Soerabaja.

On the road from Derby, our tanks catch up to the Derby Base Force and attack again, sending it retreating again.

China
As mentioned yesterday, between Kweilin and Liuchow we attack the last Chinese unit present. We get a 357:1 result and the unit surrenders.

We send just about all our bombers at the Chinese chasing our tank unit and it pays off as the 33rd Chinese Corp and 1st Chinese Cavalry corp (6,000 troops) score only a 1:2 result against our 12th Tank regiment. We lose no tank and tomorrow I think we will have exited the hex and moved back into the jungle. The attackers did have a disruption negative modifier so I think the air attacks helped for sure.

SS Shark is reported to have been sunk near Bataan on Mar 21, 1942 - this may be true since it was a mine hit. Subs have been coming and going from the sunk list since I tend to get about 2-3 aircraft hits on them each turn.

Quiet day.

Pacific
Noumea goes to size 4 and we fly in some Lily's. We'll bring some Nells when I have a unit to spare.

China
We do an artillery bombardment at Siangtan and score 552 casualties.

The Chinese attack at Chihkiang and get a 1:2 result. Again casualties are light - 100 Japan vs 300 Chinese.

My first two tank units reach the woods on the road to Kweiyang. There are two reasonable sized Chinese corps there.

Out troops arrive in Chittagong. Now or SNLF paratroops will walk down from Comilla to close the Northeast hex side. Then we just have to wait for a division element to close up the jungle to the east and we will be ready to attack.

Pacific
The fleet is largely assembled for the attack on Canton. I'm sure it will be a costly landing,b ut I think it is early enough that I can rebuild the 21st and 8th Divisions if they suffer. Battleships will bombard tomorrow to reduce any air threat as we wait for our minesweepers to come in and clear the way for the transports. Two LSD's are loading a Nav Guard unit at Tabiteuae and it should reach Canton around the same time we are ready to land. The plan is to bombard, then air attack for a few days, then move into the Canton hex so we can unload three phases on the first day. Hopefully that will get enough on the island to avoid a counterattack the next day. Bettys from Tabit will attack, as well as everything we have on the carriers (afternoon only just in case John sends his limited carrier forces at me).

Hiryu, Soryu and a CVE are on the way over to join the rest of our carriers here. Zuikaku is still in the home islands nearly done with repairs from the battle at Ceylon, but it will go ahead and get it's July upgrades done while it is already back home.

Situation near Canton Island

China
Another bombardment gets 440 casualties at Siangtan.

The Chinese attack at Chengtu and get 1:2. They lose 21 guns on this attack, not sure why. In men casaulties are not as good -800 for us, 1400 for them. Although more and more units keep showing up, and several units on the combat screen show zero AV. Hopefully he is wearing down his units as fast as he is bringing them in. I'm thinking about airlifting another unit in to Chengtu at some point.

Question -

Does unloading supplies on an atoll where you already have troops present trigger a shock attack?

Yes, supply only. I have 3 squads still in two transports, but I'll send those two ships away so they don't inadvertently unload and trigger an attack.

John at a gaming conference so I can get some updates done on this holiday weekend. If there are any MMO fans out there, Archeage is going to launch in less than two weeks!

June 26th, 1942

India/Burma
P-40E's sweep Colombo today. The first raid of 3 lone planes is easily dealt with but the next wave of 22 planes has the altitude advantage on our Oscars. We lose 14 Oscars in exchange for 1 Warhawk. On the plus side we only lose 5 pilots.

DEI/N Australia
Horn Island forts hit level 3. Stopping there.

En route to Nookanbah, the 8th Tank Regiment attacks the Derby RAN Base Force for the third time and the unit surrenders rather than retreat. As far as I know there is nothing between our forces and Wyndham/Katherine/Daly Waters now.

Pacific
Five battleships in two TF's perform a daylight bombardment of Canton Island today. Haruna and Kongo go first and DD Yugao from their group hits a mine, later sinking. Next is Yamato, Kirishima and Hiei. The damage is pretty good. 25x P-39 Airacobra, 7x PBY-5 Catalina, and 3x P-40E Warhawks are all destroyed on the ground with scores more listed as damaged. The airfield is likely out of commission as John's email said, "Plus I think you had Space Battleship Yamato, at Canton. The wave-motion gun ****ed us up something fierce. Pardon my french."

Big shells hit Canton Island atoll

We'll dump the rest of our ammo on the island before heading back to Truk to reload and return. Mines are a concern still and we'll sweep the place before our amphib TF's enter the hex.

Nearby at Palmyra, PC Taney hits midget sub Ha-21 with some depth charges and sinks the little sub.

Today Warhawks sweep at Chittagong but we do better, losing 11 Oscars versus killing 6 P-40E Warhawks. After the sweep some Wellington's attack our troops. Our Oscars are still in the air and we shot down two of the Welly's and prevent any damage to our troops. Total pilots lost including the airbattle at Darwin (below) is only 5 our of the 15 planes lost for the day.

Mandalay goes to airfield 4 and we'll move in some Sallys to support the upcoming action around Dacca.

DEI/N Australia
We send Bettys in on night attack at Darwin ahead of a daytime sweep. They get a total of 7 runway hits and damage 3 B-17E, a Dragon and a Hudson. The sweep with 26 Zeros against 16 Kittyhawks and 7 F4F-3's does well. We lose 1 Zero, and kill 8 Kittyhawks and 1 F4F-3.

Sweep over Darwin

Pacific
The battleships unload the last bits of main armament and some secondary shells on Canton Island. Since this is a night bombardment and on limited ammo, results are pretty mild. Unfortunately DD Mutsuki hits a mine and sinks. At least it was just a little DD, but it is still a bummer. In the daylight, 14 Betty's from Tabi attack as well, damaging a couple more P-39Ds. Our carriers also send in 30 Vals and they damage another 6 P-39D.

Other
Etorofu goes to AF 2 and an AMc arrives at Osaka.

India/Burma
We send Nells from Rangoon to bomb enemy troops at Silchar to get an idea of what is there. They pick the 1st Indian Light AA unit to target and lose 1 plane to flak, with several more damaged. Sallys from Mandalay pick better and they spot and attack the 70th British Division. We saw this unit farther to the east a few days ago, so it is clearly rushing to try and stem our breakthrough at Comilla/Dacca. Additional Sally attacks spot the 104th RAF Base Force as well.

Near Chittagong, we have some good fortune and Wellingtons come in unescorted and meet a CAP of 12 Oscars and 15 Nicks. The Oscars don't do much, but the Nicks perform excellently and bring down all 14 Wellingtons.

Nicks bring down the full raid

DEI/N Australia
We follow up yesterdays action on Darwin with a daylight bombing escorted by Zeros. 9 Kittyhawks and 4 Wildcats are up on CAP and we manage to get the bombers through, but lose 11 Zeros in the process. Total pilot losses for the day were 8, but at least a couple of those were from Sallys in Burma and here. Damage to the airfield is pretty good (44 runway hits) and one Hudson is destroyed on the ground. We also send in some Sallys, but they don't do any damage.

Pacific
We get a big scare today when SS Grayling puts a torpedo into CV Kaga. Kaga was hit was back in the battles around Rabaul and has been cruising around with 4 points of major float damage ever since. Amazingly, Kaga only take 3 points of MINOR float damage from this torpedo hit. By next turn the flooding should be dropped back to 4 and it will be like the ship never took a hit! Kaga has been one tough ship this game for sure.

Zeros sweep canton to check for fighters and nothing comes up. Airfield is definitely out of commission. Bettys from Tabi attack in the afternoon (set for Nav attack in the AM), and 30 Vals also attack from the carriers.

For something different, we put some Nick's at Port Moresby on Naval Attack and they went after the PT boats at Portland Roads. They shot on up pretty good, but otherwise, nothing much came of it.

Submarines
I-1 takes a shot at an xAK near Palmyra but misses. It dodges the ASW counter attack.

20x P-40E Warhawks sweep Trincomalee today and we have 22x A6M2 and 36x Oscars on CAP. After that raid, two sweeps of Hurricane I's come in (5x and then 15x). Then finally, 3 more P-40E fly in. We manage to keep a pretty solid CAP all day and come out on top in numbers. 13x P-40 and 4x Hurricanes are lost for only 4x Zeros and 3x Oscars. 3 Pilots are lost.

The Warhawks were from Trivandrum and the Hurricanes were from Madras.

Successful CAP over Trincomalee

DEI/N Australia
Dot base Kangean (near Soerabaja) is occupied by a small SNLF unit.

In Australia, our tank regiment captures Nookanbah today and will head east, then north to attack Wyndham.

Our Recon planes spot a pair of enemy ships within range of our Bettys at Koepang but no attack is made. If they are there tomorrow I'm sure we will attack them.

Pacific
Minelayers put down a good sized field at Suva and an ACM disbands in port to maintain the field.

Trivandrum goes up to size 3 AF, so we may see more sweeps from that airbase soon.

With the 48th Division in place, we attack the 75th Indian Brigade that had been trying to get away from Comilla before we could attack. The attack is good with 34:1 odds and we wipe out about 2/3's of the unit. It retreats to Dacca where we will be heading next. The 48th Div, 21st Brigade and 2 tank regiments will head northeast then west into Dacca to avoid a river crossing. Dacca has some light industry so we will hopefully get another small supply source. It also has a size 4 airfield that we will bring Tojos into asap to provide some much needed local CAP.

Preparing to advance in India

DEI/N Australia
East of Singapore our SNLF Coy captures Groot Natoena.

Philippines
We launch a deliberate attack at the mountain base of Malaybay and get 3:1 results against fort level 2. Forts drop to 1 so hopefully it won't take much more to clear this base and then we can move on to the last one at Cagayan.

Pacific
At Christmas Island, midget sub Ha-3 takes a hit from AVP Avocet. It is at around 30 sys damage so it will get picked up and taken back to Kwaj or Truk for repairs.

Our minesweeper finally arrive and begin clearing mines at Canton. Hopefully it will only take another day or two to clear them all. Today we sweep 27, but a pair of DMS will arrive tomorrow to assist the two AMc that got started today.

We unload a partial SNLF units at Norfolk Island today which is between New Caledonia and New Zealand. We will secure the island tomorrow and then (hopefully) take off and head east to another island.

China
In far northern China, Wasu is occupied by our tank regiments and they will now head down to Urumchi.

At Kiuchuan we attack with our armored car unit, inflict 95 casualties and we will retreat away to avoid a counterattack.

June ends just as we are about to land on Canton Island. A relatively quiet month, we still saw progress on all fronts. CL Colombo comes off the sunk ship list, as does CV Formidable which was expected.

In Burma we clear the eastern area and are poised at the river crossing to Paoshan waiting for one of our brigades to come out of the mountains. In India we successfully trap the enemy in Chittagong and will soon wipe them out. While doing this, the 48th Division has pressed on ahead to relive Comilla and put pressure on Dacca. Soon we will have 7 veteran divisions and some tank regiments able to run rampant in the clear of eastern India. The 1st Armored Division will be formed up in mid-July and the 2nd Armored division a couple weeks after that. With luck we will be able capture Calcutta in the next two months.

China saw some nice gains. We capture Liuchow and put a decent amount of Chinese troops out of the fight by causing them to retreat south. Near Chungking, we manage to continue a tenacious hold on Chentu, although supplies are in a precarious position. Relief efforts are under way, but movement is slow through the forests. In the center, all three bases west of Changsha are now under our control and we will soon make another attempt to besiege Changsha to stop the local factories from producing supply. Slight to the west, we are also advancing on Tuyun and then Kweiyang where the enemy does not appear to have many troops. Capturing this important crossroads should severely damage the Chinese supply system.

In the Pacific, Pago Pago is captured with a few valuable US units being destroyed. We spend most of the month setting up for a landing at Canton Island, and that will happen very soon.

At Australia a new front is opened as we land in Broome in the middle of June and march east, capturing Derby and Nookanbah with ease. Our goal is to capture Darwin eventually and multiple small armor units are en route. The plan is to capture Wyndham via ground assault allowing us to unload our reinforcements closer to Darwin than Broome. The 4th and 33rd Divisions will also be sent here once they have finished their recovery in Osaka and Tokyo.

Some numbers for June -
Bases captured: 32
VP Ratio June 1: 3.350:1 (Japan)
VP Ratio July 1: 3.405:1 (Japan)
Air losses: 239 Japan, 337 Allies
Ships lost - Allies: 18 Ships, (90) Points (decrease in VP lost because of Intel corrections)
Ships lost - Japan: 15 Ships, 87 Points

Here is the current submarine scoreboard. One subs were lost in June, the I-174. Not much activity and I-159 retains the lead.

June 1942 Sub Scoreboard

Also, I will start posting the resource status in the Home Islands (not including Hokkaido). You can see I've run supply down pretty low and that is part of the plan. Most of the major industrial changes have been completed, so for the past couple months I have had extra supply available to ship out to various fronts. Once some of the fronts are secure, less supply will be shipped out so we can build up a reserve for the late war. You'll also notice that the decline in oil has slowed as we have organized our CS convoys. There is a decent amount of oil building up on the mainland at Singapore, Port Arthur and Fusan that I haven't yet shipped home. My hope is that once China is clear, the mainland roads/rail will bring the oil to Korea and I can haul it home from there.

July 1st, 1942

India/Burma
Yesterday our unit from the east of Chittagong enter the hex thus sealing off the last hexside. Today all air in Burma is focused on Chittagong to support the first ground assault there. Some Mohawks catch a couple Nells, but for the most part the bombers are unopposed.

The ground assault goes very well, with a 9:1 result against fort level 2. 24,000 Commonwealth troops and lots of guns and tanks (three Armor units) are captured. Full details below. More importantly, six more divisions are free to follow the 48th deeper into India. The 56th/A will remain here as a garrison.

quote:

Allied ground losses:
23408 casualties reported
Squads: 347 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1772 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 108 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 271 (271 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 226 (226 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 11

Defending units:
43rd Cavalry Regiment (Armor)
50th Tank Brigade (Armor)
Chittagong Fortress
7th Indian Division
254th Armoured Brigade (Armor)
36th Indian Brigade
63rd Indian Brigade
IV Indian Corps (HQ)
24th Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
106th RAF Base Force
48th Light AA Regiment

DEI/N Australia
At Broome, SS KVIII hits one of our cargo ships, sinking it. We score some glancing blows on the sub but not enough to sink it.

Pacific
The DMS and AMc clear 101 mines at Canton today. It appears the mines are gone so we will move the fleet into the Canton Island hex tomorrow and then unload the next day so we can get three full phases of unloading.

Norfolk Island is occupied by our troops. For the first time we see the LB-30 Liberator in action as 8 of them fly a bombing run against our SNLF Coy on Norfolk. Two squads of troops are damaged. We will be loading up tomorrow to leave the island anyway, so we should avoid the Liberators.

Liberators sighted. A reminder of why we need to move forward while we still can.

China
Chinese attack at Chengtu today and get 1:2 odds. Forts (level 2) don't budge, so that is good. They take more losses than we do, but not by much. Supplies are definitely getting low, but we will continue to airlift as much as we can.

They also attack at Chihkiang. Here we fair better in the casualty department, although the results are also 1:2 with forts at level 2. We have an engineer unit on the way here to push the forts up to level three, and then I'll feel pretty good about this place given the defensive bonus plus forts.

On the road to Tuyun, our infantry arrives so we will attack tomorrow. Based on the bombardment from the enemy I think we can force a retreat here.

India/Burma
Blenheims do night air attacks on the port at Chittagong. No hits are scored.

Hurricanes sweep Comilla, but we have nothing up there. We attack Silchar and spot both the 70th British Division and the 26th Indian Division. So these are the closest threats to us at the moment, and we'll watch their movement carefully. Depending on enemy fighter coverage, we'll try to bomb these units occasionally to keep them out of movement mode.

Philippines
Having rested a couple days, we attack again at Malaybay and win this time with a 7:1 result (forts 1). All four enemy units retreat to Cagayan after losing about a third of their troops to casualties. Our units will follow along.

Pacific
In preparation for tomorrow's landing at Canton, Bettys hit the 6th Marine Regiment disabling 2 squads, while 45 Kates and 31 Vals hit the 762nd Tank Battalion, knocking out 22 squads and destroying 1 squad. Also attacked is the 2nd USMC Parachute Battalion.

China
Our attack on the road to Tuyun isn't as great as expected, with a 1:2 result. Good news is that the enemy is out of supply, so we should be able to push them away soon enough.

No breakthrough yet

It has been a while, but the Chinese attack at Tienshui. 121,000 Chinese versus 38,000 Japanese and we get a 1:14 result. We lose 600 causalities (mostly disabled) to their 7,000. Oddly they didn't show a supply negative so maybe some supplies are trickling in?

The Chinese bombard at Chengtu. This is problematic since it causes us to burn supplies we can't afford to use there.

Submarines
Near Hawaii, I-8 fires at AM Bobolink but misses.

Ki-49-Ia Helen upgrading to Ki-49-IIa Helen at Tokyo - one factory is being kept on Ki-49-Ia since that model has the MAD device. The -IIa factory will expand to 60.

India/Burma
Blenheim's on night attack at Chittagong again, no hits.

We lose some Nells (6), Sallys (21) and Zeros (1) over Silchar today when the enemy puts 11x Buffalos and 11x P-40E's on CAP. We do knock down 2 Warhawks and 4 Buffalos, and also do damage to the ground troops (26th Indian Div), but we'll need to restock these air units a bit before the next attack. 15 Pilots lost, but those are all bomber pilots.

Pacific
Big news today is the landing at Canton Island. We get all the landing phases we could ask for. We manage to disable a couple dozen squads during the landings, but we have far more disabled - around 200 squads. In the daylight, Bettys knock out six tanks from the 762nd Tank Bn, and 117 Kates and 41 Vals hit the 6th Marine Regiment doing 214 casualties and knocking out 4 guns. Finally, BB Yamashiro and Mutsu pile on and bombard the island for lost of Port and runway hits, supply hits, 100 casualties and they even hit SS S-31 twice with big caliber guns, sinking the sub I think.

In the end, we get about 11,200 troops on the island to attack the 5,500 Americans. The attack is pretty miserable though, both sides are disrupted and low on supply, but the Americans are dug in behind level 4 forts and do very good. We get a 1:99 result and lose about half our troops while only knocking out a few squads of the enemy.

We have a decent amount of troops on the island, and more unloading tomorrow, so I think we have enough to hold against a counterattack. Especially given how fast we usually drop distruption, and the fact the enemy is out of supply, but we have more unloading. Surprisingly, the unit I though would do well, the 62nd Nav Guard, which fully unloaded from LSD's (which provide less disruption and faster unloading) got completely wiped out in the assault.

Day 1 landing is very bloody

China
Our armored cars attack against at Kiuchan, this time we try a shock attack. We get 1:2 odds, and inflict 100+ casualties for no losses. We will retreat and repeat.

The Chinese attack again at Chengtu and again we hold. Better casualty ration this time, 700 to 2,800.

They also attack at Chihkiang, and apparently they are low on supply. They only get a 1:11 result there.

Submarines
Near Hawaii, I-5 scores a hit on a decent sized cargo ship - xAK K.I. Luckenbach, sinking the enemy ship.

Other
Previous report of sinking of CA Exeter incorrect. Intelligence reports ship is still in service

SS I-27 arrives at Hiroshima/Kure

Pacific
We occupy Tongatapu with a SNLF Coy today and three PT boats are scuttled in port.

We unload the rest of our troops at Canton Island through the night and day. Yamashiro bombards with secondary armament and knocks out another tank plus a squad. One of our transports is hit by a 75mm M1A1 Pck Howitzer, but the ship should escape just fine. Another smaller transport is lost from a collision though.

Bettys take out 5 more tanks, and given the supply status of the enemy, hopefully the disabled vehicles won't be coming back anytime soon.

Our shock attack is again at 1:99, but at least this time we don't show a supply negative. We lose less troops than yesterday, only 4,000 this time. We seem to have better preparation and supplies. There are just a couple squads on board ships from the 8th division, so those will sail west so they don't unload and trigger another shock attack. We have more supplies to unload and those should help us recover and then we can attack in a few days.

China
We shift several air attacks to Changsha. Yesterday our troops entered the base in an attempt to obtain a foothold here. Every time we have tried before, we get counterattacked and bounced out, but enemy troop levels looked low so we are trying again. No counterattack comes and our bombardment reveals a decent amount of troops, but probably not enough to evict us this time. The report showed about 45,000 troops on both sides. This should mean the troops in Siangtan won't be able to get any supplies from Changsha now.

We attack at Urumchi and get 1:1 odds and drop forts to 0. However, our troops are now low on supply and I suspect it might take a while to get some this far north.
