Crikey! Is it that bad? OK, I'll definitely think about it.

They are pretty tough bombers. Are you mostly talking about the later Imperial fighters? If I can torch the Palembang oilfields in April '44 it might be worth a few B-29 losses.

I don't know if it matters, but these are my best land bombing crews. I've been pulling out the best crews in the other 4EB squadrons in preparation for the B-29 squadrons' arrival.

They get shot down exactly as easily as B24s. I had hoped their higher speed would save them. But not so. Can´t remember the exact numbers but I lost about 20-30 B29s per MISSION against the HI flying at night. So more then a month of replacements per mission when Erik got his NFs massed.

I don´t usually promote myself but it might be a good idea to read my AAR against Erik. I think I was pretty detailed at documenting the STRAT campaign. Especially the early campaign when flying from the Marianas. I did burn down a lot of LI/HI but lost pretty much all my EXP90+ pilots in the process and gutted my B29 force. Took 3 months before I could use them again...and I was way later then you so I had both "25"s and "B"s I think. Can´t remember for sure though!

If you decide to go for PB. Hit the oil directly rather then the MAN. It only works to hit MAN when MAN numbers are big. With only 3 MAN you will most likely never cause any damage to the oil. I STRONGLY urge you (again ) to go in at night.

I did read it, as it happened. Not that I memorized the strat bombing strategy, though!

I figured Eric had managed to amass large numbers of advanced fighters with great pilots. Falling the same as B-24s is pretty alarming.

Not sure how things was on his end. I never had the time to read his AAR after we finished. One day though...

Re: your amphib forces for Koepang: The port can only be approached from the Roti hex or the one NW of Koepang. That may add an extra hex travel to your approach.

Yep, and Roti will be seized by a commando unit embarked on APD types. If it is not garrisoned. No recon!

The Allies captured:

There were Allied amphibious or airborne operations at:

Our subs came up empty.

1,457 AV at Chungking.

Our sweeps over Chiang Mai went well overall, but very bad weather seemed to limit bombing damage of the airfield. Tomorrow Pegu will get the same treatment with the aim of destroying supply.

The Bonins and Daito Shoto are still receiving convoys. Our forces for Iwo Jima continue to transit, and our carriers continue to repair minor damage.

The Empire Strikes Back! Here is the Java Sea (see pic below), now heavily populated by Imperial battleships, aircraft carriers, and other warships. Some of the search sightings were complemented by combat sightings, hence the ships names, which are inconsistent with the ship counts.

Our non-combat traffic will pull back past carrier aircraft range. The Dutch-Australian cruiser force just north of Salajar is unseen by Imperial spy drones, and might just ambush Kirishima and Haruna. Several heroic air attacks on those evil beasts were smited by Zero CAP from their carriers. A USMC Vindicator DB squadron was wiped out, every last plane.

Imperial death drones attacked our warships at Salajar and finally put a torpedo into a destroyer, but she survives at anchor with massive flotation damage. The fires are almost out.

We have reshuffled a lot of combat groups in the area. Kendari is the closest field that can fly offensive ops, followed by Namlea. Ambon can but we have no air support there. There are now two P-47 squadrons at Watampone, protected by a PT flotilla. Two Spitfire VIII groups are still at Kalao and Salajar will be a size 1 field either tomorrow or the day after. It will be several days before Watampone makes size 2. There are 3x Fletchers at Salajar and two other DD (different max speed) in another TF. Kalao sports a small PT contingent, a 4x DD TF, and Burke's Bow Wows of 7 mixed breeds. How can we lose?

Kendari gave sent away some FB that got chewed up so they can R&R, and now sports more fighters and a fresh USN DB squadron out for blood. The USMC group has upgraded to SBD-3 and called in 13 new pilots (ouch!). Other fighters have staged to Namlea where they can provide support if the IJN tries to pass the Kalao-Salajar line and hunt for convoys. Still more fighters and dive bombers staged farther back to wait for room to move up.

The Koepang invasion is safe where it is unless the Imperial carriers pass south into the Indian Ocean. That being possible even if the invaders are not sighted, they will pull back toward the Australian coast. Besides, a long distance search from the carriers might allow a surface groups to catch them on succeeding days, slow as they are.

If the carriers should head north, there are three submarines patrolling the Makassar Strait. There are loads of fighters and bombers at Soerabaja too, as expected.

Admiral Wa on vacation? Has life actually intervened to slow the flow of information from the front?

Wouldn't you just know that real life would pick what is sure to be an exciting turn resolution to throw down a course of tar and fly-paper? The Admiral has found himself up to his tail in cria poop (look it up!). Nothing serious, but time consuming and energy draining. Come to think of it, maybe he's just found one of those online un-dead type games? Nah.

Of course, my pet theory - publicly, I mean - is that the IJN got its booty bruised in the unrevealed fracas and the Emperor has ordered the Admiral to hold off on the next turn until he finishes personally digging a trench line around the Imperial Palace (the Admiral, that is; the Emperor doesn't dig). After all, the Tokyo invasion armada sails any game-year now, and the Emperor must know that.

Supreme Side 1 Commander Wa has been completing a temporary move, and things never happen the way they are supposed to happen. There is some sort of formula that, in essence, says that the more that you do correctly, the less that all of the other involved parties get right. So when he gets back in the swing of things if you are tempted to give him a hard time, go ahead. Why not!?

The troop shuffles continue and will for more than a week before the final loading for Iwo Jima is underway. 12 days is the estimate for the longest repair on a carrier at Truk, so the loading can take place while the carriers form up.

All of the real action was in the Java Sea. The IJN Kongos (three of them) went for Kalao, fought their way into bombard the base (keeping it from making size 2 today), then fought their way out. They were intercepted multiple times and both dished out punishment and received some. Several Allied task forces pursued but the cruiser force failed to catch its quarry. The Imperial fliers did catch theirs, however - the Allied cruiser force. We lost two (CA and CL) and might lose two more (2x CL). Our own fliers found the enemy behemoths and smote them with multiple 500 pound bombs. While not battleship-killers, they never brighten one's day.

The bombardment at Kalao has left the support units there practically useless, but they have recovered before and will again, given peace and quiet. On that score the Yamato and friends are in sight of the Imperial carriers near the eastern end of Java. They are 10 hexes from Kalao and 9 hexes from Salajar, so I doubt that a bombardment is in the works for tonight. Salajar has built to size 0 + 100%, so barring a surprise bombardment will make size 1 tomorrow.

A batch of 8x Fletcher DD are leaving Truk for Kendari, where Burke will transfer his flag to the new group. About 3 of his current command can continue operating but the remaining survivors need yard time. All that need repairs will pull back to do so while the fresh ships take up station. One DD is pumping out at Kalao. Another is pumping out and quenching the last fires at Salajar. Two DD at Kalao will head to Kendari to rearm. Two DD at Salajar will stand watch while another two move to Kalao to do the same. All four of those will rearm when others take their places. Burke in now solo flag Gillespie is making for Kendari to meet his new group but Gillespie herself will make for a shipyard. Four others of his group are making for Kendari with all needing some work as the two otherwise serviceable had radars knocked out. To the NW the two Allied cruisers are each escorted in their own TF trying to make safety, as is a DD. CL DeRuyter and 4x DD are still quite serviceable but in need of rearming and refueling, so are heading for Kendari as well.

Within 3 days we will have ground forces at Makassar. The invasion forces for Koepang will stay where they are, 6 hexes from Roti. If IJN carrier forces move north to harry the invasion of Sidate then the Koepang force will make quite a splash.

Every carrier with the older model has upgraded to the TBM-1C Avenger, well over 200 aircraft in all. Land based squadrons will continue with the older model for now to use them up and keep the pool of spares for the carriers quite high. The extra defensive firepower on the C model might be enough to yield a hit or few at a critical point. With IJN battleships in combat in the Java Sea, I am sending North Carolina and Washington back to Pearl Harbor for their upgrades. Essex CV Bay of Bengal, still training her air groups, is departing San Diego for Pearl Harbor and points beyond.

The Java Sea.

How many Japanese DDs are still afloat? Must be running REALLY short if sends in 3 BBs with only 1 DD for escort!

I don't know, but there are 58 DD sunk so far, plus a few related types like TB.

Here is a sunk ships report. Click on the attachment, then click on the file name, then maximize the window.

Our subs came up empty today.

1,525 AV at Chungking. Our valiant forces will attack a cut-off Imperial unit 2 hexes SW of Paoshan. It's unclear if they will have a valid retreat path.

Raids on Pegu went well enough yielding 10 supply hits plus others.

CL Tromp and CL Adelaide went down today, one with help from Imperial attacks. It looks like the damaged destroyer will be saved. Salajar made size 1 airfield today and a group of F4U-1A moved in and is taking up CAP duties. SWPac HQ has switched to Kendari (> 1/2 transfered via air and the rest has boarded an APD convoy), so torpedoes are now available there. A Beaufort VIII group has moved in.

The IJN carriers are at Soerabaja, and large surface combatants are at Pamekasan (2 hexes SE Soerabaja) and moving west.

Here is the sight of that pending attack in China.

Kendari airfield expanded to size 6. Kalao is still repairing, but the support units have 1/3 the disruption they did just after the bombardment and are now getting some work done. Salajar won't expand to size 2 in less than 6 weeks without more help. Watampone should make size 2 in two days and then be a threat to shipping. In about those same two days our land forces should arrive at Makassar. I presume the Empire will use warships to slow their progress in evicting the current residents. Kolaka will probably build a size 1 airfield in about 2 weeks. BTW, while Kalao has a working radar, a small convoy is trying to unload one right now at Salajar and three are waiting at Kendari for pick to join their units at Watampone.

We now have an air HQ and so two TBM squadrons with torpedoes operating out of Talaud-eilanden.

We have five B-29 squadrons that have arrived so far. Each has 9 of the top bomber pilots in the USA plus a good squadron leader. We have 88 pilots in the pool awaiting further B-29 squadrons. This has meant that some front line 4EB squadrons now have some green pilots. The pockets and poorly defended bases of the Empire are a benefit in this situation, but some of those squadrons are literally right up on the front line instead, doing 50% training and 50% mission.

The highlighted hex is apparently where the Imperial carrier force is located. Many heavy surface units are at Soerabaja. Our landing craft should depart Sidate tomorrow toward safety. Our Koepang invasion force is just visible, still waiting, still unseen.

Our subs came up empty.

734 AV at Chungking. The only arrival was a base force with 13 AV, so the rest of the increase is from squad repairs/enablements.

The raids on Pegu continue to nibble at Imperial supply and our assigned troops continue moving for Ramree Island.

More significantly, the KB has up and vanished. And - the Empire laughed at the fanciful notion that a PBY pilot in the dark and fog had hit Akagi. Drat! That leaves me mulling whether to send the Koepang invasion force forward, presuming that the KB moved NW up the Java Sea and out of search range, or pull the invasion back toward Darwin, presuming that the KB moved into the Indian Ocean and is shielded by weather. The invasion force will move forward. But only 1 hex, as the shorter legged landing craft must refuel.

Our troops at Sidate made progress and will rest tomorrow.

Kalao has fully repaired and stands at 97% construction toward a size 2 airfield.

Three more B-29 groups arrived today.

DD Erben, damaged in the recent battles in the Java Sea, is still fighting fires and flooding at Salajar. She has pulled up anchor and will head for Watampone, 2 hexes distant, where much more assistance is available. Three Dutch DD from Kendari will join up with her to provide DC help.

The losses on that ground strike were mostly to the escorts. The Emily losses shown here must be due to an airlift somewhere. I wonder if it might be those air support units stranded near Kendari?? Yesterday we transferred in two Corsair units and that might have boosted intercept activity.

Our subs got a PB.

765 AV at Chungking.

Same strikes on Pegu and moving of units in Burma. We are readying Akyab as a short term B-29 base. Five or six squadrons will make at least one strike on light industry at Saigon before transferring elsewhere. Akyab to Saigon is 26 hexes, within normal range.

quote:

Ahem. Ahem.

The Empire swept our ground forces closing in on Makassar before bombing them. Their sweep took down about 8 P-47D2, but now there is a third squadron in place (stacked at 20k, 30k, 37k). Our ground units arrived anyway, and our fighters took down a combined total (Georges and Helens) of a few more than what they lost.

Kalao and Watampone have both built size 2 airfields and we now have DB at both fields. The KB is nowhere to be seen, so the Koepang invasion force is moving back to its former forward location, intending to be in D-1 position tomorrow. There are multiple intercepts of heavy radio traffic at Singapore so it is quite plausible that the carriers are there.

All of the troops prepared for Iwo Jima have unloaded in the Marianas and are now only awaiting the last few carriers refurbishment at Truk.

Here is the overview map.

The attack at Sidate went OK but this time took down more of our squads than the defenders'. The troops will be back at it tomorrow to keep up the pressure. At Makassar we now have recon but our troops will rest. Only our infantry unit is prepared for Makassar and they are heavily disrupted by air attacks. Another regiment that is prepared for Makassar is a week or two away if they are needed. The good is that while again we lost some P-47D2 to a George sweep, we also caught a raid with heavy spillover CAP and knocked down more escorts and several bombers. The real battle is that the air space over Watampone is not being contested and we are bringing in men and equipment to build up that base.

Erben, with the help of friends, has made it to port at Watampone; her fires are out and the many large holes in her hull make easy work of running hoses to pump out. There's a pony in here somewhere!

Eight Fletcher DD have arrived at Makassar and Burke has moved his flag. Gillespie will head to Melbourne for repairs while Mustin, finally pumped out, heads to Sydney.

We finally got some bombing runs in on Iwo Jima's airfield, doing minor damage. The daily P-38 sweeps continue to meet no takers. The last of the assault troops are finally on board ship and headed to New Guinea for R&R. Tinian has a few more days of airfield building before attention switches to the port facilities. Agrihan just maxed out base building at port 3 airfield 5.

The Koepang invasion finally goes in tomorrow!

There was no air strike on our troops at Makassar today so they largely recovered but do still require more time. Watampone should build to size 3 in two more days, so the pressure is building.

The invasions of Roti and Koepang have gone well so far, with the loss of one LST but all troops ashore in good order. They have some additional disruption due to the delays at sea and will rest for a day. There are still some more supplies to unload but all should finish tomorrow, perhaps in the first phase. Roti is undefended and the commando Coy will secure it tomorrow.

So where will the Imperial carriers be tomorrow and the day after?

Here are today's air losses.

I also looked over the SigInt for Jesselton and Kudat, which will be the eastern side anchors for the Cam Ranh Bay operation. No units noted for either location. Tawi Tawi and Basilan both recon as empty, so when the fleet is in support it might be a quick grab all the way to start building bases on the South China Sea. Units are fully prepared for all four bases, which in the case of Jesselton means a division.

Of course, after Iwo Jima the Empire will have kamikazes...

796 AV at Chungking. The latest Imperial bombardment. I'm not sure if at this point the bombardments are offensive or continuing recon while the villains gather strength for their final assault on this peaceful valley.

Our strikes against supply at Pegu continued, and a large Imperial convoy has been sighted in the Andaman sea. It might already be at Tavoy, but end of turn sightings this day are more difficult than usual to reconcile with mid-turn sightings. A USA fighter group newly upgraded to P-51B airframes swept Tavoy and slaughtered the Nicks on patrol there. See the air losses below.

The second to last of the B-29 groups to arrive at Aden came in today, the last being 28 days out. I'm shipping the B-29 groups into India a bit slower, using all AKV type ships so as to minimize unnecessary maintenance delays on those service level 5 aircraft. Akyab has 35 ready B-29-1. What we are lacking is recon on the target, which will be a telltale so it has been delayed until now.

The troops are all ashore at Koepang and will conduct the first attack tomorrow. Roti was auto-captured with fortifications at level 4!

At Makassar, our troops are recovered well enough now to try an assault. Air strikes today hit their troops, and so might help our cause.

Two more days until the last Iwo Jima units are in combat mode, and six days until the last fleet carrier for the op is repaired.

No sign of the Imperial carriers.

Today's air losses. The Nicks were primarily lost over Tavoy and the Georges over Iwo Jima.

The bombardment at Chungking is both to wear you down and use your supply. He does not want to lose horrendous numbers of squads in an early assault.

Your fighters appear to be pwowning his all over the place. I suspect he has withdrawn all his good pilots to Japan and is sending you cannon fodder (the noun, not the WITP-AE player).
Regardless, you appear to be managing your pilot pools and CAP arrangements very well!

Our subs got a PB, and we lost a sub to prior damage.

806 AV at Chungking. Another bombardment but our AV continues to increase anyway.

The Empire was testy after the combat debut of the P-51B, so they swept our base at Bassein. No P-51B or any model of P-47 were on CAP, so the Empire came out vaguely even. See today's air losses below.

There is (possibly) a benefit to a big Imperial effort today, seeing as it resulted in so many Imperial fighters lost. The recon of Saigon came in at DL 7/8 and shows 0 fighters. The B-29-1 groups will strike tomorrow, aiming for the 41 Light Industry. 44 planes are expected to participate. Also, 4EB from Diamond Harbour will hit Light Industry at Rangoon, and 4EB in India closer to China will hit Light Industry at Chengtu. Chengtu only has 2 Light Industry and will be hit by 2 B-17 groups (one E and one F), while Rangoon has 38 LI and will be hit by various marks of B-24/Liberators.

CV Illustrious has finished upgrading at Bombay. When she and some carriers with her now make it to Colombo and fill out their aircraft capacity, the RN carrier force will be ready for action, even if not ready for a direct full-on confrontation with all Imperial carriers at once.

Koepang was an unexpectedly quick blowout - I did not figure on capturing it with the first attack. It looks like a large part of the 57th Infantry Rgt was air lifted out prior to today's battle. There is no indication of Imperial carrier or surface forces threatening the Koepang convoys, but fast carriers could certainly, from outside of search range, sprint into striking range of Koepang overnight. For that reason support troops will be brought in carefully, perhaps only a small packet before the airfield is repaired and can host some protective forces.

Some idiot forgot to order the assault at Makassar - what to do? They will attack tomorrow. Nearby at Watampone, which expanded to size 3 airfield today, DD Erben has pumped out and will head out for repairs with 63 major flotation damage as her worst ailment.

The USA '44 Infantry Squad pool has reached 10, with all units at full strength, but will probably hit zero again with upcoming combat on Iwo Jima.

Here are today's air losses. we had 12 pilots KIA and 27 WIA. Those pilot figures probably compare very favorably with the Empire's.

Chungking AV from just before the last assault:

1,525
656
734
765
744
780
796
806

So it's gained 150 AV in 6 days, including much less with the bombardments after the first two days. Here is today's bombardment, which I guess I should include as a 'countdown' of sorts as it shows the starting AV ratio.

5,731 to 1,575 was the starting AV at the last assault, a ratio of 3.6 to 1. The ratio in this bombardment was 3,068 to 867, or 3.5 to 1. I don't know if DAW HQ is waiting for some specific unit to show up, but we can expect what is likely the final attack any day now. On the other hand, in 2 days we have a unit with 57 AV arriving, and in 6 days a unit with 257 AV will arrive. If the guys hold on...

Thanks! I'm just being as conservative as I can and massing as much numbers, good pilots, and good planes as possible. Otherwise I think he will tear me apart with the production choices that the IJ player is able to make.

I do fear he's stockpiling cyborgs. Nothing can be done about it except fight them when the time comes!
