Tales by Japanese Soldiers
by Kazuo Tamayama and John Nunneley
ISBN 978-0-3043-5978-3

Personal accounts of Japanese Soldiers from the Burma Campaign. It is amazing to read how little supply they provided for their troops.

From the back jacket:
"Over 305,000 Japanese soldiers fought in Burma between 1942 and 1945. 180,000 of them died. This book tells how the common soldier of the Imperial Japanese Army lived, fought and died in that terrible conflict."

Ordered this today:

A Warrior Dynasty: The Rise and Decline of Sweden as a Military Superpower.

About time I learned something about Sweden

This arrived today - hussah! I will start it as soon as I'v finished reading My Secret Falklands War (Sidney Edwards).

Well well. It seems that the Scandanavians were a United Kingdom at one time (Denmark, Norway and Sweden). Never knew that...

No! No! No! Never happened! No! No! No!

It was a personal union. Three Kingdoms but one King or Queen. Huge difference!

Not according to page 21.

Queen Margaret I in 1397 united the countries under King Erik of Pomerania. Three Kingdoms - one King, just like the United Kingdom in 1801.

We can debate this further later on.

The Old Contemptibles: The British Expeditionary Force, 1914 by Robin Neillands

I think this was one of the free books posted here in that one thread, it's only $3 now. It's a pretty good read covering the BEF before the war and through the early months. Some might not like how the author interjects his opinion on a regular basis regarding the various commanding officers. I've been playing Strategic Command WW1 so it's gives some excellent flavor for some of those scenarios.

On a semi-related to the thread note: Does anyone have book suggestions for the Korean War? It's one conflict I know almost nothing about, as there are few movies and practically no games (outside wargaming) that cover the topic.

Episode 12 of the Frontier Saga by Ryk Brown is now available!

Great "Space Opera" series. Very grandiose plan... 5 series of 15 books each set in his universe. Different time periods and new characters in each.

This is the first series and still three more books to go after this one, but Brown is a very speedy writer and produces about three books a year. Each book is pretty satisfying even with some cliff hanger endings so the wait for the next volume is not really a problem like in some series where the individual books feel incomplete. plenty of action... highly recommended.

Also if you are a Kindle Unlimited subscriber ($9.95 a month for unlimited reading with up to 10 books checked out at time) these are free to read. The new Unlimited service has worked out well for me as I've found a lot of books that I like on the eligible list. They offer a one month free trial so you might want to check it out and meanwhile pay attention to which books you are looking at for the "Kindle Unlimited" banner on them.

Any support for starting a separate thread for "What SciFi Book Are You Reading"?

Restricting this one to Military related subjects?

Just pondering...

A book is a book. This has to be the right place

I read "military" books only occasionally. I focus on history (NOT military though), political economy (now), philosophy (in the past). And sometimes a novel.

Whilst we are at it...

Now reading The Enigma of Capital and the Crises of Capitalism by David Harvey

Rhonda if you want to start a new thread that's up to you, although personally I'm with TD - this is about all books.

I don't believe there is need for more than one thread about what book we are reading.

If this is about all books then I'm currently reading: Kierkegaard: A Guide for the Perplexed  by Clare Carlisle. I'm a bit over half way through the 157 pages of the book. It's not a particularly difficult book although like most philosophy books it isn't a page a minute read. But so far it seems very readable and understandable. I've been on a "mission" recently (from God of course) to learn more about this Danish/Christian Philosopher. I was a little familiar with him from college but always wanted to delve a little deeper and in more detail.

I started out with The Cambridge Companion to Kierkegaard, read a couple essays then realized I was getting into some unknown territory so I picked up Clare Carlisle's book in hopes of clearing things up a little before going back to the Cambridge Companion again. So far I highly recommend Carlisle's book if you're not too familiar with SK. It's very straightforward and not overly worshipful of SK...just critical enough to stir the brain cells. I also happen to love a radio talk show on BBC called "In Our Time" with Melvin Bragg. Clare Carlisle was a guest on an episode about Kierkegaard. You can find it here if you are interested in a really interesting talk about him. The Kierkegaard discussion is about 1/3 the way down the page.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/iotp/all

Braggs show "In Our Time" is "ace" as a British former philosophy student/Internet acquaintance of mine would say.

Let's stick with one book thread.

Forget I suggested a separate SciFi/Fantasy thread :) It was just a thought.

A Warrior Dynasty has been put on hold. To Crown The Waves arrived and I have to get this read first. It's like a WWI version of On Seas Contested which gave a good overview of the key navies of WWII, organisation, history, infrastructure etc.

It's well organized, although the material is familiar.

The book I really loved is his 'Battleship Design and Development 1905-1945'. I loaned it to someone I never saw again.

I know the feeling - I have one of my books out on loan now - its been on loan for many, many months (despite polite reminders like "how are you finding the book?". I really hate it when that happens, but short of "give me my $%^&%^& book back" there is not much I can do

Have you read (or heard of) John Grainger's 'Dictionary of British Naval Battles'?
It was published 2.5 years ago, but has no reviews on Amazon.
