I initially ordered an Allied deliberate assault at Buna then partially reversed the decision – leaving mainly an artillery bombardment plus several units that did not get the cancellation order from the deliberate assault. A small number of vehicles lost from the tank units, casualties mostly disrupted squads. At whatever scale launched, the abortive Allied deliberate attack did result in some amount of Japanese supply consumption plus an idea of the exact condition of Jap forces in Buna. Japanese planes reported destroyed • 15 Ki-84 Frank (10 air-to-air, 5 ops) • 12 Ki-44 Tojo (7 air-to-air, 5 ops) • 7 N1K1-J George (4 air-to-air, 3 ops) Allied planes reported destroyed • 14 P-47D25 Thunderbolt (11 air-to-air, 3 ops) • 11 P-47D2 Thunderbolt (8 air-to-air, 3 ops) Considerable air-to-air action between USAAF CAP fighters vs Japanese fighter sweeps and ground attack strikes over adjacent coastal hex NW of Buna. I had somewhat expected Pillager to launch this Jap air activity. My current overall air strategy over this part of New Guinea includes taking on air-to-air combat preferably over Allied-controlled territory, this slightly reducing my own pilot losses though more importantly increasing elimination of Japanese pilots from planes going down within the air combat hex. 11 USAAF pilots confirmed lost in the actions below. The level of Japanese air activity over this area of New Guinea next game turn a possible indicator of Pillager’s capability of sustaining a continuous Japanese LBA air campaign in this theatre – the level of available Jap supply and support in New Guinea to recover lost/damaged planes and conduct air missions while at the same time waging a land campaign. Unchanged from last report Unidentified Japanese LCU detected in several interior land hexes of New Guinea adjacent (SE of) Wau and Salamaua – possible attempt by Pillager to infiltrate Allied overland supply paths running south to north across interior areas of New Guinea. I anticipated this possibility with appropriate countermeasures already in place. Current situation map of eastern New Guinea follows.
