Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea. Most 2E and 4E bombing units now stood down to recover damaged planes and/or rest pilots – my general criteria for standing down pilot fatigue at 10+ and/or the air unit has plane(s) damaged or destroyed. Since the last AE beta version, “air unit fatigue” has become a significant issue with all front line air squadrons (particularly bombers and units with higher service rating plane types). Under the current AE beta, I’m having to stand down air units to repair/recover significant numbers of damaged planes that were not being damaged (for whatever reason) prior to the beta. This situation also occurring across all theatres (i.e. decreased Allied air missions over Burma as well as SW Pacific). It’s likely this phenomena applies to both sides and keeping many of Pillager’s planes on the ground as well.

Fighter units assigned to cover Buna typically switched after 1-2 days, this generally coincides with pilot fatigue levels reaching 10+ and/or the squadron has damaged planes. 12 Allied fighter squadrons (10 USAAF, 2 RAAF) are currently in Port Moresby – most of these rotating through various mission assignments and rest periods. Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 4/03 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Tabiteuea, also Jap 104th Infantry Division now located on Tabiteuea. Detected status of Tabiteuea shows no visible Japanese forces or activity at either location. Jap 104th Division transferred from the China Army.

Another 4/03 Sigint entry reports heavy volume of intercepted Jap radio signals from Truk, base status shows no visible Japanese forces or activity. No reported Jap air activity from US patrol subs in sea areas surrounding Truk.


DEI: US patrol sub operating in Macassar Strait reports contact with Japanese surface ASW. I’m not expecting this sub to encounter much (if any) Jap fuel/oil transport shipping in this sea area, perhaps intercepting a “stray” TK moving fuel/oil cargo northward from Balikpapan or Soerabaja. My estimate is the more likely case is that Pillager is moving fuel overland via China to the Home Islands to the extent possible (threads in the forums indicating it is). This theory also explaining the small amounts of Japanese transport shipping encountered by US patrol subs near Formosa and off the Japanese Home Islands. Pillager does have a route of some kind for moving oil and fuel from the DEI – this route yet to be discovered though even if discovered it could easily be inaccessible to Allied interdiction (especially if the route is overland via China). I’m thinking Pillager is likely using a land route via China to transport oil/fuel northward with a minimal sea transport “footprint”, this “footprint” also the only available point for effective Allied interdiction. AAR follows.

All 15 B-29 squadrons will be loaded aboard convoy EX-70 for transport to Australia. One additional B-29 air unit is scheduled to arrive in Aden as reinforcement in 25 days – this squadron to be transported separately to Capetown and picked up there aboard the next available EX transport convoy (arriving in Capetown) enroute to Australia.

Current status of Terapo base – 42K supply on hand. No reported Japanese air activity over the Terapo bridgehead area, At this point in time, priority in the Terapo bridgehead is largely maintaining the status quo. Malaya: A 4/05 Sigint entry is indicating Pillager has broken up Jap 34th Infantry Division into its sub-units, “B” sub unit of the division now located in Georgetown. Location of 34 Division's “A” and “C” sub-units unknown, though I’m estimating these likely remain in southern Thailand and/or adjacent areas of northern Malaya as local defense garrisons. Last reported location of 34 Division before its break-up was at Singora and had been there for a considerable period of time.

South Pacific: 181K supply and 3400 fuel on hand in Luganville. Fuel point stocks left behind by the previous occupant. Repairs to base facilities in Luganville now in progress, initial activity being done by engineer elements within LCU from the invasion force. Five construction engineer LCU have been dispatched to Luganville aboard several Landing Craft TF along with additional supply points. Plans are to quickly repair base facilities in Luganville then expand to maximum sizes – largely the same recipe as Noumea and Port Moresby. In fully expanded bases, supply and fuel points have few if any stacking limits when the base is large enough. Current damage levels to base facilities in Luganville – port damage 100 (this is the key number right now), airfield service damage 52, runway damage 13.

Some unloading operations at Luganville underway – quantities of supply cargo from 3 remaining xAP of the invasion force plus additional several small Amphibious and Landing Ship TF just arriving at Luganville. “Over the beach” unloading of cargo into Luganville is mandatory while port facilities remain inoperable.

Japanese naval air strike on LCT supply transports in Terapo base hex. At this point I’m operating a group of LCT shuttling supply into Terapo from Port Moresby – LCT being relatively expendable (provided losses aren’t excessive) and more difficult to hit by Jap air strikes. Rather than transport supply into two bases (Port Moresby & Terapo) from Australia, I’m transporting supply into New Guinea using the more secure transit route to Port Moresby. Port Moresby then the “hub” for moving supply to Allied forces elsewhere in New Guinea. AAR follows.

2nd Australian Division joins US 32nd Infantry Division in the coastal hex between Buna and Salamaua (hex 99, 128). Plans to attack and evict Jap 69 JAAF Bn from this hex to bring it completely under Allied control and finish closing off Buna. Eliminating 20 Japanese LCU (parts or full units) in Buna is likely a lengthy process involving a siege but the end result is almost certain to simplify subsequent Allied actions in New Guinea, especially if done at a minimum cost to Allied ground forces. The current ground action at Luganville provides some information to model how a siege of Buna can be executed. Key to executing an effective siege of Buna is maintaining adequate supply levels for attacking Allied ground forces at Buna – this problem not entirely solved though I have some ideas, execution of a plan requiring some forces currently committed in South Pacific theatre.

Jap forces in Buna resume ground bombardment attack this game turn. I initially ordered an Allied deliberate assault at Buna then partially reversed the decision – leaving mainly an artillery bombardment plus several units that did not get the cancellation order from the deliberate assault. A small number of vehicles lost from the tank units, casualties mostly disrupted squads. At whatever scale launched, the abortive Allied deliberate attack did result in some amount of Japanese supply consumption plus an idea of the exact condition of Jap forces in Buna. I had somewhat expected Pillager to launch this Jap air activity. My current overall air strategy over this part of New Guinea includes taking on air-to-air combat preferably over Allied-controlled territory, this slightly reducing my own pilot losses though more importantly increasing elimination of Japanese pilots from planes going down within the air combat hex. 11 USAAF pilots confirmed lost in the actions below. South Pacific: 200K supply on hand in Luganville. Airfield facilities (service & runway) now fully repaired, port damage reduced to 77 – base repair activity still being done entirely with engineer elements from LCU in the invasion force. Several xAP from the invasion force continue amphibious unloading – small quantities of remaining supply point cargo.

Ground combat forces at Luganville are standing down, no evidence of any surviving Japanese LCU elements on Luganville. Total casualties from landing operations and ground combat for Allied ground units in Luganville were 1-2% TOE with 5-10% disruption of LCU elements in some units. LCU element losses and disruption expected to recover quickly.


Current base status of Noumea – 1.53 million supply and 894K fuel on hand. Retuning ships from the Luganville invasion continue repair of minor wear and tear system damage, most again fully operational. Allied LCU prepped or still prepping for next objectives are staging in Noumea and Suva – many of these units brought forward from New Zealand while the Luganville operation was underway, several others still arriving.

Central Pacific: US Main Carrier force now operating inside Japanese outer perimeter line – contact was made with a Japanese transport TF which was attacked and most of its ships sunk (1 xAK and 1 E possibly surviving, both with heavy fires and damage).

My intent had been to maintain the Main Carrier force in “silent running” as long as possible. A surprise port strike on Truk was under consideration if the carrier force moved far enough northward and still remained undetected - planned decision point on launching this raid to occur next game turn at a hex location 2 days’ sailing from an attack position on Truk . US Main Carrier force had been moving northward together with its replenishment TF – the replenishment TF embedded within the carrier TF formation and due to refuel Main Carrier force ships next game turn at the point from which the carrier force would begin its approach on Truk. Fuel remaining on ships in the carrier force had been a significant issue in the 2/43 strike by the Main Carrier force on oil production facilities at Palembang – duration of air strike operations limited due to ship fuel consumption and endurance required to return to base. The fuel issue was not to be repeated for this operation.

A second very significant dilemma in this operation had been setting various parameters within the US Main Carrier force – this exercise a less than ideal compromise between maintaining “silent running” and ability to adequately react in the event of encounter between US Carrier force and KB or other Japanese naval force. Naval air search had to be sent up (though at less than full range to minimize possible detection of the Carrier force), dive bombing and torpedo squadrons set for naval strike (despite the possibility of premature strike on an unintended target as happened below) plus CAP fighter coverage. Also bringing along the Replenishment TF to ensure the Main Carrier force hit Truk with a full tank of gas. All of this calculated with the fair probability a Truk operation would likely have to be cancelled if anything went out of line.

While the US Main Carrier force itself (with replenishment TF still in tow) remains undetected at least to my best knowledge, Pillager is definitely alerted to the carrier force’s presence and approximate location with any possibility of a surprise strike on Truk virtually eliminated. A decision was reached to cancel the Truk raid and move the Main Carrier force and Replenishment TF southward. Several factors in the decision include (1) loss of surprise, (2) presence of the replenishment TF along with the Main Carrier force, (3) sea areas this far inside the Japanese outer perimeter generally an unfavorable location to engage KB in a possible carrier action not to mention Jap LBA from nearby bases.

Although the planned Truk operation had to be aborted, there appears to be no significant danger to Allied naval or support forces. Back up, reload, and try again…AAR’s and situation map follow.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 4/09 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Gardner Is, detected status shows no visible Japanese forces or activity. It’s an open question as to exactly where and to what extent Pillager is still occupying areas in the far southeastern corner of Japanese-controlled territory – including Gilbert, Phoenix and Ellice island groups along with Baker Is. My available intelligence data is leading to a conclusion that larger and/or key bases still contain Japanese LCU garrisons but at least some smaller Japanese-controlled bases in the far southeastern area may now be vacant. Identified Japanese LCU transfers go both into and out of this area - these movements occasional but with no pattern firmly establishing that Pillager is either strengthening or evacuating Japanese forces in this region.

South Pacific: 203K supply on hand in Luganville, port damage reduced to 15, airfield fully operational. All cargo unloading from invasion force ships completed. A transport TF of small AK and xAK has arrived in Luganville with supply cargo – these ships slowly unloading cargo “over the beach” while repair to port facilities continue. Air transport of HQ US 5th Fleet elements into Luganville from Noumea underway. Support elements in 5th Fleet HQ intended to assist recovery of Allied combat LCU in Luganville, also provide other support functions as needed.

Air transport of US 42 Aviation Base Force from Noumea into Luganville completed last game turn. Three US Marine VMF squadrons (54 F4U-1 & 1A Corsairs) transferred into Luganville from Noumea.

Four US DD escorting transports now unloading at Luganville were dispatched to Ndeni as a surface combat TF to investigate a Coastwatcher report entry from 4/08 indicating a lone Japanese ship (unidentified) was located in Ndeni base. The lone Japanese ship turned out to be a gunboat. US DD returned to Luganville at daylight after the action below. AAR follows.

US CV Franklin arrives in theatre from mainland US, this carrier recently entering the game as a new reinforcement. CV Franklin will enter temporary reserve status (along with CV’s Enterprise & Shiloh) while the US Main Carrier force remains at sea. That convoy you destroyed had two AK ( which usually can carry a large number of troops) and a rare Japanese LST (good for moving tanks and guns). Since no troop losses were posted it was either moving into the area to move some troops or had finished moving them and was RTB. If you had a sighting before your attack it might say which direction it was going.

True. I suspected the convoy was large enough where it was capable of carrying troops but ships in the convoy were probably empty or not carrying LCU as cargo.

Given that and what the carrier operation was attempting to carry out, I would have rather missed the Jap convoy completely. Catching Pillager's KB carriers and/or major Japanese naval ships (BB) at anchor in Truk a much bigger item of interest.

Central Pacific: US Main Carrier force and replenishment TF moves southward without incident. Escort DD in all 10 air combat TF refueled this game turn from replenishment TF. Replenishment TF detached from the Main Carrier force TF formation, moving independently to join with Escort Carrier force also in the general sea area (this activity also planned to occur if the Truk strike operation had continued).

No definite plan set as to possible combat action by the Main Carrier force during its remaining time at sea though options for offensive operations being examined – return to base also under consideration. Returning to base would enable full replenishment, repair of minor ship damage, and rotation of ships in and out of the Carrier force for ship upgrades. Four CV at sea with the Main Carrier force (CV Lexington, Saratoga, Hornet, one Essex CV) have pending ship upgrades. The three CV now on reserve in New Zealand (CV Enterprise plus 2 Essex CV) would be rotated into the Main Carrier force to enable upgrade of the other carriers. Rotation of ships into/from the Carrier force for scheduled upgrades also likely for escort ships (cruisers & DD) in the carrier TF’s. All just as well done sooner as later.

Four US construction engineer LCU (821 Engineer Construction Bn plus 3, 4 & 11 USN Seabees) arrived and disembarked in Luganville. A fifth construction LCU (9 USN Naval Construction Rgt) arrived at Luganville and set to begin unloading. Construction activity to expand airfield and port facilities in Luganville to maximum sizes is starting. Current airfield size in Luganville is 4(5), port size 3(3). Total operational engineer strength at Luganville now at 168 squads plus 43 vehicles.

Air transport of 5th Fleet HQ support elements from Noumea into Luganville continues. Most elements of this HQ are now in Luganville, transport of all remaining elements into Luganville expected to complete this game turn. HQ 5th Fleet intended to provide general support to LCU based in Luganville, this HQ has no naval support capacity.
