When we got to Subic main gate the first Jap dive bombers were already pushing over into their dives and the triple A was opening up. The sentry at the gate was scared to death and was sure our driver was a Jap spy so Bob and Skinny and I had to get out and hoof
it over to the battery. We all forgot about our hangovers. If it weren't for the threat of instant death I would greatly recommend a surprise attack by Japan as a great hangover cure. Before we reached the battery we saw USS Seal take a hit on her foredeck. The bomb seemed to go straight through and explode beneath her, sinking her almost immediately and damaging the boats alongside. We saw Canopus take two hits and before long the air was thick with smoke. We fired until the ammunition began to run low. No sooner had the carrier bombers left than level bombers arrive from the North.......

The Bettys come in at 6000 ft. A port attack on Manila was half expected so all the P-40's from Clark were moved down to provide better CAP over Manila. It didn't really work because of the surprise. Only a trivial number of fighters got airborne. Oh well.
I think the Bettys did more damage than the carrier planes.

2 Squadrons of P-40's have their morale wrecked so they are flown off to Mindanao and Cebu and the damaged airframes trucked down to Batangas because JJ will undoubtedly be back tomorrow if the weather permits.

WJD carriers are off the NE tip of Palawan, 240 WSW of Manila. Recon shows only 2 carriers but there are 270 planes so it has to be most of the KB. Even so, they are about 100 planes short. Maybe one or two carriers detached and not spotted?

Hiryu was reported off the coast of Malaysia with only 3 fighters aboard. I seriously doubt that is Hiryu. More like a CVL.

No landing on Luzon or Mindanao yet but there are 25K LYB's ashore at Kendari.

At this rate of consumption we will need help from the Navy soon. I hope they know what they are doing.

We had to contest the airspace over Manila with all the damaged vessels below. One time I read about a strategy where you bait the enemy fighters down to lower altitude with 2nd line aircraft and then jump THEM from above with your 1st line planes.

Turns out it really is Hiryu on station off of Malaysia. And maybe Soryu too. The RAF barely missed a bomb hit on Hiryu yesterday it seems.

I tried to talk Admiral Lord SPrior from sending Thanet down the West coast of Luzon. You never know. There is no completely safe route and they might have run across a carrier.

Here is why I didn't see your post until now...BECAUSE I WAS ASLEEP I'm beginning to think the flat Earth theory is at odds with experimental observations.

No the flat earth theory still holds. I'm in Australia on the bottom side- you're on North America on the top side- it's dark there when its light here and vice versa- makes perfect sense if the sun goes around the earth.
