I have managed to graduate from seeing my allied troops being butchered in Operation Husky to leading them into catastrophe in the Battleground Italy Scenario but have developed a couple of questions.
1) Of the 6 Amphibious HQs deployed at the start of the scenario, only one has created a temporary port. The other five have no Temp Ports. The only other ports immediately available to the Allies are the size 1 port in Gela and the damaged size 3 port in Siracusa. Is this by scenario design or am I missing something?
2) What is the best way to prevent the Axis from creating enough naval interdiction to isolate one or more of the Amph HQs during the first couple of turns? Is it better to set up dedicated Air Supremacy ADs over the invasion beaches, hammer Axis airfields or other solution? I also seem to have at least 1 or 2 (sometimes more) amph HQs isolate during the Axis or Allied air phase.

I appreciate any/all suggestions the more knowledgeable here can provide.

1) Naval amphib units will not create temporary ports when the invasion hex is already a port. If you do not have a Naval Amphib unit adjacent to a temporary port during your logistics phase the temporary port vanishes. Occasionally there will not be a port symbol in the hex but if you examine the hex (or press F3) you should see whether the hex has a port or not.

2) I have found that the best naval interdiction counter is placing naval interdiction missions in the same area myself. While the passive naval patrols by the Coastal AF does pretty good if the air groups are arranged properly, occasionally using the Strategic AF to also perform Naval Patrol missions help in special areas (such as extending control up to Corsica until it or Sardinia can take up the coverage).

Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion on how to handle Axis Naval Interdiction. I will give your suggestions a try.

I'm not sure that is the issue in this particular scenario or I am really missing something obvious... From the very start of the Battleground Italy scenario, the Sicily invasion beaches are already in place with troops ashore. However, only a handful have ports (temporary or otherwise). In particular, take a look at the invasion beach for TF545 or TF85. Both have invasion beaches over open non-city/non-port hexes but no temporary ports are created. What subtle rule or scenario configuration am I missing???

For clarity, I am running the latest .08 hotfix.

My apologies to all for the shameless self-bump but am curious if anyone can help explain the lack of initial temporary ports at the start of the Battleground Italy scenario.

What does the mouseover say when you hover over the beach? I found something today where the port symbols were not displaying.

There's a known bug where port symbols aren't displayed in some cases for the temp ports. It looks like that scenario starts with 1 temp port and 2 damaged regular ports (use the N key and hex rollover to find the temp pott). Trey (el hefe) would have to answer why he set things up this way.
